Great Performances: Hamilton’s America
new documentary follows the making of composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning hit Broadway musical “Hamilton,” exploring the role that storytelling plays in history while spotlighting the production about one of America’s Founding Fathers and early political geniuses, Alexander Hamilton. Great Hamilton Performances: Hamilton’s America examines how timeless the hot-button issues of today’s America are: immigration, race relations, debt, income inequality and states’ rights. These were the same fights that defined Hamilton’s time, and they are the driving force of Miranda’s historic work. The film, the season kickoff of the PBS Arts Fall Festival, delves deep into the creation of the Broadway show, revealing Miranda’s process of absorbing and then adapting Hamilton’s story into groundbreaking musical theater. Further fleshing out the story is footage of the New York production with its original cast, trips to Mount Vernon and Valley Forge with Miranda and other cast members, and interviews with presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush; Speaker of the House Paul Ryan; Senator Elizabeth Warren; Secretary Hank Paulson and Secretary Timothy Geithner; and Questlove, Jimmy Fallon, Nas, Stephen Sondheim and others. The film repeats October 26.

The Durrells in Corfu
JOHN ROGERS/SID GENTLE FILMS & MASTERPIECE
ETA television features a wide array of superb drama in October on Sunday and Thursday nights. Tune in to a lineup of offerings from Masterpiece each Sunday as the second seasons of Poldark (9 p.m.) and Indian Summers (10 p.m.) continue to unfold (preempted October 9 for a presidential debate). On October 16, joining the Sundaynight Masterpiece slate at 8 p.m. is the six-part series The Durrells in Corfu, starring Keeley Hawes as a widow who transplants her four unruly children from Britain to sun-drenched Corfu in 1935. Based on author Gerald Durrell’s autobiographical books, the series follows the unconventional family’s life on the Greek island — and the children’s search for a suitable mate for their lovelorn mother. On Thursday evenings, the Australian legal drama Janet King wraps up on October 6 and in following weeks WETA reprises episodes of the Masterpiece series Endeavour, Season 3 at 8 p.m., starring Shaun Evans as young Oxford detective Endeavour Morse — and at 9:30 p.m. presents Vera, Season 4, with Brenda Blethyn portraying seasoned but troubled Northumberland sleuth Vera Stanhope. For more episodes of Endeavor and Vera tune in to the WETA UK channel this month as well. Funding for Masterpiece: The Durrells in Corfu is provided by Viking River Cruises and POM Wonderful with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

he John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will present the annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to iconic actor and comedian Bill Murray this month, and as it has for 16 years, WETA will capture the awards event proceedings for nationwide broadcast. A 90-minute television special, Bill Murray: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, will be taped in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall and co-produced by WETA, featuring a starstudded array of top entertainers paying tribute to Murray for his achievements in American comedy. Murray is the 19th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize. The television program — airing October 28 on WETA TV 26/HD and Caddyshack nationwide on PBS stations — is a production of WETA; CoMedia; Mark Krantz Productions; Cappy Productions and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Onstage performers and guests include Dan Aykroyd; Aziz Ansari; Roy Blount, Jr.; Bill Hader; Jimmy Kimmel; David Letterman; Brian Doyle Murray; Paul Shaffer; Sigourney Weaver and others. “Since his first performances on Saturday Night Live more than three decades ago, Bill Murray has charmed us with unforgettable performances from an eclectic cast of characters that have become ingrained in our cultural vernacular,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter. Murray started his career on the cast of Chicago’s Second City Saturday Night Live improvisational comedy troupe and then signed on to radio’s National Lampoon Hour (1973-74) in New York City. After moving into television, Murray was tapped by producer Lorne Michaels to replace Chevy Chase on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL). Appearing on SNL from 1977 to 1980, Murray created memorable comedic characters before landing his first major film role, the 1979 box office hit Meatballs. He then starred in two of the top-grossing comedies of the 1980s, Ghostbusters Caddyshack (1980) and Ghostbusters (1984). Murray’s comedy hits in the 1990s included Groundhog Day (1993) and Kingpin (1996). He also took more serious roles, playing a mobster in Mad Dog and Glory (1993, with Robert DeNiro) and an eccentric businessman in Wes Anderson’s Rushmore (1998), for which he was named Best Supporting Actor by both the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his seriocomic role as a jet-lagged movie star in Tokyo in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003) opposite Scarlett Johansson. More recently, Murray has earned accolades for his portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park on Hudson (2012), and he reunited with Anderson on the films Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). Murray was nominated for a lead actor Golden Globe for his role in the comedy St. Vincent (2014), and he starred in the 2014 HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge, for which he earned his second Emmy Award. Murray also voiced “Baloo” in the Disney animated film, The Jungle Book (2016).

he drama Call the Midwife was the highest-rated debut in BBC television history when it premiered in 2011, presenting in Series I the true-to-life story of a young woman — raised in a well-off family in the English countryside — who becomes a nurse midwife and goes to work in the poorest area of London’s East End in the 1950s. Based on the memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, the stories capture a snapshot of British social history and star Jessica Raine as Jenny Lee, who with her fellow midwives and nursing nuns helps expectant mothers enduring hardships borne of poverty.

ritten by and starring Jack Dee, one of the UK’s most successful stand-up comedians, this series enters the world of Rick Spleen, a disillusioned comic and writer whose career has not gone the way he had planned. Hosting corporate events and appearing on second-rate daytime TV shows was not his dream. Rick combines a mass of neuroses and petty grievances with a terrible propensity for lying. Along for the humorous ride are his American co-writer, his unflappable partner, his daughter, and her hapless boyfriend.

lassical WETA 90.9 FM is proud to present the radio series Concerts from the Library of Congress to listeners throughout Greater Washington and around the nation. Co-produced in a partnership between WETA, the Library of Congress, and Classic Digital Syndications, the superb broadcasts feature world-class soloists and ensembles recorded live in concerts at the Library’s historic Coolidge Auditorium in the 90th anniversary season of the series. Beginning October 1, the one-hour programs air each Saturday night for 13 weeks on Classical WETA 90.9 FM — and are being made available to public radio stations around the country. Hosting the series is conductor, composer and Peabody Award-winning radio personality Bill McGlaughlin. Funding for the series is provided in part by WETA members. “We at Classical WETA have been delighted to collaborate with the Library of Congress and Classic Digital Syndications in producing this engaging series — the concert presentations at the Library are one of America’s truly outstanding musical traditions,” said Dan DeVany, Vice President and General Manager of Classical WETA and executive producer of the series. “This 13-part radio series will bring these wonderful concerts to a wide listening audience. With performances by renowned artists such as mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter; the American Baroque ensemble Apollo’s Fire; and pianist Richard Goode, the scope and vibrance of these programs are reflective of the high standard of musical quality established by the Library since its first concert in 1925.” Borromeo Quartet

“What makes these programs a unique listening experience is not just the dazzling music, but also the resources that the Library of Congress brings to each episode,” said DeVany. “Several historical instruments from the Library’s extraordinary collection are featured in the concerts. Also, through the commentary of guest archivists and Library staff, listeners are taken on a tour of the Library’s vast repository of precious musical manuscripts and historical recordings. These help to tell the stories behind the music.” Encounters with rarities such as the manuscript of a Bach cantata or an original Beethoven portrait illuminate the listening experience, and moments of music history come alive in landmark archival performances by legendary figures such as Béla Bartók and Leopold Stokowski. The Library’s rich music holdings include manuscripts, scores, sound recordings, books, libretti, music-related periodicals and microforms, copyright deposits and musical instruments. Tune in to Concerts from the Library of Congress each Saturday night on Classical WETA 90.9 FM, and enjoy these powerful, evocative performances.
The gifted Finnish composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara, died on July 27 at age 88. Jens F. Laurson, who writes on classical music for various publications including Listen magazine, called Rautavaara a “Giant of Beauty” in his July 29 obituary. Einojuhani Rautavaara Saying that Rautavaara’s beautiful song will continue for generations, Jens wrote that this “...is one of the great privileges of great artists such as Rautavaara: They may die, but they cannot pass away.” Rautavaara’s musical language wasn’t always as we fondly know it today, though. Early on, his music sounded like Bruckner. (Jens writes that Rautavaara’s 3rd Symphony could pass as Bruckner’s 10th!) Then — mostly because it was what every young composer was doing at the time — Rautavaara immersed himself in the 12-tone serial technique (developed and championed by Arnold Schoenberg), which pushed the expressive chromaticism of the late-19th and early-20th centuries to its pinnacle: perfect atonality. Although Rautavaara later rejected serialism, his music of this sort was more than a passing experiment in the concept; indeed, his 4th Symphony is the only fully 12-tone Finnish symphony. Harmony, however, turned out to be too deeply entrenched in Rautavaara’s soul for it to be brushed aside. That innate expressive need coupled with a ubiquitous spirituality in Rautavaara’s works give us the irresistible music we know from him today. Our October 30 Choral Showcase program is a memorial to the composer and his music, including his Missa a cappella. Earlier, on the October 9 broadcast, I stretch the Choral Showcase limits to include a marvelous piece — the concerto for birds (recorded at the Arctic Circle), Cantus arcticus. It’s a heart-felt, outsidethe-box expression that makes it understandably Rautavaara’s most-loved work. Not coincidentally, Cantus arcticus concludes the second of two programs (October 2 and 9) focused on war and peace. Somehow, including a work that uses both non-human singers (and composers too, for that matter) and humans on a program about war and peace seems only natural.

hen does a large symphony become a chamber work? When someone like Smithsonian Chamber Music Society artistic director Ken Slowik arranges it for 14 instruments and soprano. Hear Gustav Mahler’s fourth symphony in Slowik’s chamber orchestra version on the Monday night broadcast of Front Row Washington, October 3 at 9 p.m. Also on the program, Arnold Schönberg’s “radical” Chamber Symphony, a piece that Slowik says “threw down the gauntlet for subsequent developments in the twentieth century, much as Beethoven’s Eroica symphony (1804) was path-breaking a hundred years before.” No doubt you’ve heard the story of Bach’s Goldberg Variations having been composed for a count who suffered from insomnia. While that story can’t be proven, the truth is that this apex of theme and variations now bears the name of the count’s 14-year-old harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg! On our October 10, 9 p.m. broadcast, American pianist Steven Beck gives an all-Bach recital at Dumbarton Concerts that includes the Goldberg Variations. In 1999 while at Juilliard, twin sisters Emily (violin) and Julia Bruskin (cello) formed a trio with Australianborn pianist Andrea Lam. Now based in New York City near their namesake Claremont Avenue, the Claremont Trio is the first piano trio ever to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the K-L-R
International Trio Award. Hear them Monday, October 17 at 9 p.m., performing a Haydn trio and Antonín Dvořák’s ever-popular “Dumky” piano trio. When clarinetist/composer Derek Bermel received a commission from the Wolf Trap Foundation, he took inspiration from renowned theoretical physicist Nima Arkani-Hamed. The world premiere of his intriguing, fun musical impression of gravity is titled “A Short History of the Universe.” Hear it on our October 24, 9 p.m. broadcast, with clarinetist Bermel and the JACK Quartet also performing Brahms’ exquisite B minor clarinet quintet. On Halloween night, we go “Psycho” with PostClassical Ensemble performing music at the National Gallery of Art from the iconic 1960 Hitchcock film in a special concert version created by Bernard Herrmann, using themes from his suspense-filled score. Our PCE broadcast also includes two rarely-heard Herrmann works: the 1935 Sinfonietta for Strings and his lyrical “Souvenirs de Voyage, Quintet for Clarinet and Strings,” composed in 1967.
