his month, we are very proud to premiere two new locally focused television productions that underscore WETA TV 26’s role as your hometown public broadcasting station. Our engaging new series Check, Please! DC presents reviews of restaurants around Greater Washington by local diners. The production will inform and entertain you, offering advice on great places to have a good meal out on the town. Airing as well is our new film Bygone DC, which spotlights some of the most interesting places and people of yesteryear in Washington and explores transformations of the landscape that have shaped the city. In October, we are also delighted to roll out a new season of fascinating ancestry explorations on the popular series Finding Your Roots, a WETA co-production with our friend and partner, distinguished scholar Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr. Learning about one’s forebears is a truly enthralling pursuit — for the discoveries, legacies, surprises and more that so intrigue us as they speak to who we are. Finding Your Roots explores the extraordinary, diverse mosaic of American identity and heritage, combining insights from historical research and scientific investigation in journeys of personal discovery. In the ten new episodes of Season 4, airing nationwide, Skip spotlights the ancestry of a diverse array of celebrity guests — see page 3 to learn who — illuminating their family backgrounds, and by extension, our collective experience as a people. Another new October WETA presentation, the film Vermeer, Beyond Time, spotlights the Dutch artist in anticipation of a major new exhibition opening at the National Gallery of Art. Enjoy these exciting new WETA offerings, and thank you for your support.

Thursdays on WETA TV 26/HD

n Thursday nights this month, WETA TV 26/HD features mysteries from Down Under: New Zealand-set series The Brokenwood Mysteries continues, leading off at 8 p.m. with new Season 3 episodes, followed by Australian drama Jack Irish at 9:30 p.m. In The Brokenwood Mysteries, Neill Rea stars as police detective Mike Shepherd and Fern Sutherland portrays his methodical assistant, detective Kristin Sims. The two investigate serious crimes in a seemingly serene rural community. In the new season’s four mysteries, the detectives face poisonous spiders, a real-life “Clue” board game gone wrong, the death of a classic-car enthusiast and more. Jack Irish stars Emmy-winner Guy Pearce as the brooding antihero of Australian writer Peter Temple’s acclaimed novels. In three feature-length mysteries, the lawyer-turnedprivate sleuth, reeling from the loss of his wife, is thrust into a seedy underworld. Fellow Australian Marta Dusseldorp (of A Place to Call Home and Janet King) plays Linda Hillier, a journalist who aids Irish and becomes close to him. After the three stand-alone mysteries air on successive Thursdays, a follow-on six-part Jack Irish series begins on October 26, featuring a storyline that plunges the investigator into a case with international reach — and serious trouble.

New WETA TV 26 local restaurant review series premieres Wednesdays, Oct. 18 & 25 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

amed 2016 Restaurant City of the Year by Bon Appétit Magazine, Washington, D.C. is currently one of the hottest foodie destinations in the United States. With new restaurants opening every day, identifying true dining gems in the nation’s capital can be a matter of taste. A new locally focused WETA TV 26 television series — Check, Please! DC — offers intriguing restaurant tips by showcasing the diner’s perspective on the food scene in Greater Washington. Giving knowledgeable local diners a chance to share their favorite eateries and experiences, the programs will cover a wide range of treasured neighborhood establishments recommended by actual customers. The first two programs in the series air Wednesdays, October 18 and 25; and additional episodes are currently slated for November. “Check, Please! DC, the latest in our roster of WETA TV 26 series celebrating local culture, will offer a fun way to hear about the hidden treasures of Washington’s food scene,” said Kevin Harris, WETA Vice President and Television Station Manager. “The series offers a refreshingly candid way to explore favorite restaurants in the District, Maryland and Virginia.” WETA TV 26 has explored food and culture in the region for television, most recently with the productions WETA Neighborhoods and Neighborhood Eats. The series is hosted by local restaurateur Rose Previte (center left, above), owner of Compass Rose, which was named to every Washington, D.C. best restaurant list upon its opening in 2014 and remains a darling of local

and national media — from The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times to Food & Wine and Bon Appetit. Recently, Previte was featured in the April 2017 issue of Washingtonian as one of Washington, D.C.’s “40 Under 40” top professionals to watch. She resides in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles with her husband, National Public Radio Morning Edition co-host David Greene. In the series Check, Please! DC, viewers get an unfiltered look at local dining establishments via a panel of diverse citizen reviewers who share their honest opinions. In each episode, three guests each recommend one dining spot for review by the other two guests. After anonymously trying each restaurant recommendation, the guests join the show’s host in-studio to discuss their experiences together. From Takoma Park to the Atlas District, from Falls Church to the heart of Shaw, the series covers a wide array of establishments and cuisines from the region’s diverse offerings. This month, Check, Please! DC takes viewers on a journey of discovery featuring hearty Southern classics, Uyghur dishes of northwest China, Belgian delights, and fresh Chesapeake Bay seafood. WETA’s series for Greater Washington builds on the successful public television series Check, Please! airing in Chicago, San Francisco, Miami and Arizona. WETA continues to accept applications for guest reviewers on Check, Please! DC, which films at the station’s television studio in Arlington, Virginia. To learn more, visit weta.org/checkplease.

theaters. Music entertainment venues of all stripes are in the spotlight as well, from Crystal Caverns and Carr and Sparrow’s Beaches, to the Watergate Music Barge (notably featured in the Cary Grant feature film Houseboat). The WETA film revisits favorite Mom-and-Pop shops and department stores; revolutionary bookshops, record shops and clubs that reflected the local arts, music and culture scene; and the once-ubiquitous casual chains, oyster houses and power lunch restaurants of old. These buildings and business may have come and gone, but their memory lives on to inspire future generations. Bygone DC also examines nearly forgotten chapters of the city’s history, which had an undeniable influence on the Washington, D.C. we know today, exploring how the landscape has undergone radical change: from remnants of slavery and stately mansions located steps from the National Mall, to the government administration temporary — or “tempo” — buildings (below) that inhabited the city’s green spaces in the early-to-mid-20th century. “For long-time Washingtonians and transplants alike, Bygone DC takes viewers back in time to discover Washington, D.C.’s rich history,” said Kevin Harris, WETA Vice President and Television Station Manager. “The region’s constant evolution offers the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the things that aren’t there anymore, part of WETA’s continuing mission to produce television about our community, for our community.” Bygone DC is the latest in a portfolio of locally focused WETA productions that includes WETA Neighborhoods, Neighborhood Eats, and the new restaurant review program Check, Please! DC, which premieres October 18.

n ever-changing landscape, the neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. undergo continuous physical transformation. As the city and its communities usher in the future, iconic local establishments often disappear right before our eyes. Through archival footage and original interviews, a new WETA TV 26 production, Bygone DC, takes a walk down the region’s memory lane, spotlighting the places that once defined Greater Washington and exploring the impact of their legacy. Many notable locales beloved by generations of Washingtonians are sadly no more, with only remnants of their glorious past still lingering today. The 60-minute special takes a nostalgic look at some of the most memorable bygone places in Washington’s history. Among them are sporting venues, including Griffith Stadium, the baseball sporting ground where past U.S. presidents traditionally threw out the seasonal first pitch; and the Capital Centre, the former home of the Washington Bullets and Washington Capitals, as well as a performance venue for National Mall famed pop music acts. Bygone DC also remembers popular movie palaces and revival theaters featuring notable architectural artistry, which at the height of their numbers constituted more than 100 unique locations, including the famed Fox, Knickerbocker and Lincoln

oday’s leading cultural trailblazers discover surprising ancestral stories while learning their family history in an engaging new season of the critically acclaimed series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., co-produced with WETA. In Season 4, Professor Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, continues exploring mysteries, surprises and revelations hidden in family trees, spotlighting a new group of 28 intriguing participants. “We are all connected to larger stories that have played a role in shaping who we are as people and as a nation,” said Gates. “The DNA technology of today opens the doors to discovering the past in new ways, allowing us to learn more about our history than ever before.” In the fourth season of Finding Your Roots, comedian Larry David and politician Bernie Sanders discover they have more in common than they thought, tracing their roots back to Jewish communities in Eastern Europe. Comedic performers Garrison Keillor, Amy Schumer and Aziz Ansari learn contrasting stories of assimilation and independence all over the globe. Actors Fred Armisen and Christopher Walken and musician Carly Simon each learn about a grandparent whose real identity and background had been a mystery to them. Author Ta-Nehisi Coates, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, and author and activist Janet Mock see their basic assumptions about their families challenged, placing their ancestors — of all colors — into the greater context of black history. Actors Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen and William H. Macy trace their nonconformist ancestors through the Civil War and the American Revolution, all the way back to the Puritan establishment. Journalists Bryant Gumbel and Suzanne Malveaux and producer and writer Tonya Lewis-Lee discover a tapestry of the unexpected as they delve into their ancestry, revealing slaves and free people of color, Civil War legacies, and forgotten European origins. Actor Lupita Nyong’o, NBA star Carmelo Anthony and political commentator Ana Navarro trace their African heritage, investigating the political choices of their fathers and discovering sometimes unexpected heritage. Also, actors Tea Leoni and Gaby Hoffmann both have lives shaped by family mysteries and are introduced to the identities and life stories of their biological ancestors, thanks to DNA detective work. DJ and producer Questlove, talk show host Dr. Phil, and journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault’s family stories are rooted in the American South. Actors Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd and John Turturro, all with immigrant parents, gain greater understanding of the challenges their ancestors faced from prejudice and poverty. In conjunction with the broadcast, WETA is working with public television stations nationwide to encourage viewers to explore and share their family histories via social media using the hashtag #FindingYourRoots, and on the series companion website, pbs.org/FindingYourRoots. Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Season Four is a production of McGee Media, Inkwell Films, Kunhardt Films and WETA, in association with Ark Media. Gates — whose most recent other film credits in partnership with WETA include Africa’s Great Civilizations (2017) and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise (2016) — is writer and host of Finding Your Roots. Major corporate support for Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Season Four is provided by Ancestry, Johnson & Johnson and AT&T. Major support is also provided by the Ford Foundation, Candace King Weir, Dr. Georgette Bennett and Dr. Leonard Polonsky CBE, Hutchins Family Foundation, Rattner Family Foundation, Daryl and Steven Roth, Anne Peretz, and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS.

WETA TV 26/HD October Highlights Vermeer, Beyond Time

WETA presentation airs Friday, October 6 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

A

COURTESY NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART

new, 90-minute documentary film, Vermeer, Beyond Time, explores the art, life and influences of 17th-century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer, one of the most loved, treasured and well-known artists in the world. The program, a WETA presentation created by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Cottet and narrated by actor Steve Martin, coincides with the opening this month of a major new exhibit (“Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry”) of works by the artist and his contemporaries at the National Gallery of Art. The film examines how this painter — living and working in the Dutch Golden Age — who died in penury and obscurity before being rediscovered some 200 years later, came to claim hearts and admiration throughout the world. Vermeer, Beyond Time is a production of Martange Production and Soho Moon Pictures for ARTE, RTÉ and WETA. Producer James Woman Holding a Balance by Mitchell oversaw the public television version of the film for WETA. Johannes Vermeer, c. 1664 Images from Vermeer’s paintings — there are only 37 in existence today — have become part of our collective imagination and are instantly recognizable. The sense of intrigue and mystery about Vermeer’s work exists not just because there are so few paintings, but also because there are no writings, no drawings, no records of a master who might have taught him, and no detail about the artist as pupil. Vermeer, Beyond Time spotlights the individual paintings, teasing out what has come to be known as the Vermeer style: the representation of light, the interplay of color and the effects of perspective across the same themes, places and objects. The film adds much to our understanding and knowledge of the painter, while still allowing for the mystery and allure of his art.

he popular natural history series Nature, which explores stories of the natural world from all over the globe, enters its 36th season this month, premiering three new films. Naledi: One Little Elephant (October 4, 8 p.m.) follows the moving story of an orphaned baby elephant whose life is saved by dedicated Botswana caretakers who reintroduced her to the herd that had forgotten her. The film also reports the startling revelations of the 2016 Great Elephant Census, which aimed to count every elephant in Africa. Fox Tales (October 11, 9 p.m.) tracks the movement of the supremely adaptable red fox into new habitats, from urban locales to the Arctic tundra, and follows new research into the secret life of these remarkable creatures. Encore program Animal Reunions (October 18, 8:30 p.m.) explores reunions of keepers and carers with the wild animals that were once in their care to learn whether the bonds that developed over many years in refuges and orphanages have stood the test of time. Rounding out the month’s Nature offerings is Charlie and the Curious Otters (October 25, 8:30 p.m.), which follows filmmaker Charlie Hamilton James as he documents the story of three curious river otter orphans in Wisconsin and visits otters all over the globe. 4 OCTOBER 2017

n a new season of Poldark (9 p.m. starting October 1), Masterpiece presents the latest exploits of 18th-century Cornwall populist Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), and his fiery partner, Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson). The eight new episodes follow the couple’s entanglement with archenemy George Warleggan and his bewitching wife, Elizabeth. The series introduces some new characters, including Elizabeth’s pretty cousin Morwenna, who, hired as a governess, becomes a pawn in George’s ruthless, grand game to win political influence and cement control over his foe. Also featured are a mysterious plague of frogs, famine, and an eagerly anticipated birthday party that has a catch. But the main action involves the French Revolution, which ensnares one of the program’s main characters in its Reign of Terror, Poldark, Series 3 prompting Poldark to undertake his most dangerous mission yet. Before the season premiere, watch Poldark Revealed (8 p.m. on October 1), about the making of the Masterpiece series. Also airing on Masterpiece this month is stylish high-fashion drama The Collection (10 p.m., starting October 8). Set in 1947 Paris as France recovers from Nazi occupation, the seven-part series, in which couture becomes cutthroat, follows the fortunes of the Sabine family, composed of business-savvy Paul (Richard Coyle), his wealthy American wife, Helen (Mamie Gummer of The Good Wife), and his brilliant but dissipated designer brother, Claude (Tom Riley). Paul’s dresses are a sensation, and only his shady past and an inconvenient corpse block his way to success. Michael Kitchen (Foyle’s War) portrays Paul’s mentor. Premiering as well this month is a second season of The Durrells in Corfu (8 p.m., starting October 15), which follows more of the eccentric family’s adventures on a Greek isle in the 1930s. Based on the memoirs of Gerald Durrell, the animal-loving youngest member of the bohemian clan, the six-part series again stars Keeley Hawes as the plucky widowed mother, Louisa Durrell; Josh O’Connor as her eldest son, Lawrence, who is destined to become a famous novelist; Callum Woodhouse as the hapless sportsman, Leslie; Daisy Waterstone as the lovelorn teen, Margo; and Milo Parker as Gerald. Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking Cruises and Farmers Insurance® with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

On the program, NOVA challenges a blacksmith and a master armorer to recreate parts of an elite armor originally manufactured in the Royal Workshop founded by King Henry VIII, tracing the pair’s progress and putting their creation to the test. Then, Ghosts of Stonehenge (October 11, 10 p.m.) examines how recent archaeological digs at Britain’s enigmatic 5,000-year-old site have uncovered new clues about Stonehenge and its builders. Secrets of the Forbidden City (October 18, 9:30 p.m.) spotlights another heritage site, Beijing’s Forbidden City, imperial China’s power center for nearly 500 years, exploring how the ingenious engineering of the palace-temple complex enabled it to survive centuries of earthquakes. Lastly, Killer Volcanoes (October 25, 9:30 p.m.) follows scientists as they investigate — from Greenland all the way to Antarctica — evidence of a mega-eruption that changed the climate of medieval earth.

Raised By Wolves

Sundays at 8:30 p.m. starting October 15 on WETA UK

omedy series Raised By Wolves follows the misadventures of six socially isolated, home-schooled siblings and their acerbic, highly capable mother Della (Rebekah Station of Wallender). Eldest sibling Germaine, 16, is idiosyncratic, distressingly overshary and deludedly in love. Aretha, 15, an introverted, sarcastic George Orwell admirer, just wants to be left alone to endure her adolescence. Yoko, 13, is a dreamy aspiring paleontologist with a heavy dose of “the Force.” Along with Wyatt (6), Mariah (5) and toddler Cher, the family also share their small home with Della’s feckless, hallucinogen-casualty dad, Grampy (Philip Jackson of Poirot).

Inspector George Gently, Series V EXECUTIVE PROGRAM SERVICES

M

Thursdays at 10 p.m. starting October 12 on WETA UK

artin Shaw stars as Commander George Gently — an incorruptible, uncompromising cop transplanted from London’s Scotland Yard to England’s North Country in the mid-1960s. Gently’s reputation for honesty and relentlessness makes him almost as feared among his colleagues as he is among criminals, but he finds an odd ally in John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby, Nicholas Nickleby, Our Zoo) an overeager, opinionated young sergeant who plays fast and loose with police procedures. Together, the two tackle four cases in Series V involving murderers, drug dealers, gun-runners and more.

bitingly funny, three-part comic drama celebrates and lampoons the snobberies, pretensions and rivalries of a small, quaint English town, bringing to life a host of characters adapted by Steve Pemberton from author E.F. Benson’s popular 1930s novels. The production stars Miranda Richardson (on the right, with Pemberton, center) and Anna Chancellor (at left) in the iconic title roles. In the storyline, the sly, scheming Miss Elizabeth Mapp and the gloriously haughty Mrs. Emmeline “Lucia” Lucas jockey for social supremacy in their town, which seems tranquil on the surface but is actually seething with gossip, faddishness and petty one-upmanship.

Prime Suspect: Tennison on Masterpiece

M

Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting October 3 on WETA UK

asterpiece series Prime Suspect: Tennison comes to WETA UK this month, portraying the early career of one of television’s most iconic detectives, Jane Tennison — the Masterpiece role that established Dame Helen Mirren as a household name. The three-part production starring Stefanie Martini rewinds the clock to 1970s London when Tennison is a young probationary officer in an environment in which sexism is the norm. Spotlighting another young crimefighter, Endeavour, Series 4 on Masterpiece airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. starting October 25.

Also in October on WETA UK: Silent Witness, Series XVII continues Mondays at 9 p.m.; Midsomer Murders, Series IX airs Mondays at 10 p.m., starting October 9; The Brokenwood Mysteries, Series II airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m., starting October 24; Jericho of Scotland Yard continues Wednesdays at 9 p.m.; and A Place to Call Home, Series IV continues Fridays at 10 p.m.

Five Local Concerts on Front Row Washington

his month, Front Row Washington presents recitals from the DMV. Not the division of motor vehicles, but live concert performances Quatour Ebène recorded at five different venues in the District, Maryland, and Virginia. We begin 9 p.m., Monday, October 2 at Candlelight Concerts in Columbia, Maryland, with Quatour Ebène, a celebrated string quartet formed in 1999 by four French conservatory students seeking a distraction from solo practice. Their all-Beethoven program features two seminal works from the composer’s final two years of life: the Opus 130 and 131 quartets. Beethoven considered the Opus 131 his finest quartet, but the Opus 130 Quartet stands alone, from its “beklemmt” anguished Cavatina to the ground-breaking “Grosse Fuge,” described by the New Yorker’s Alex Ross as “a musicological Holy Grail…the most radical work by the most formidable composer in history.” Nearly 50 miles southwest of Columbia, Maryland, is the Barns at Wolf Trap, where the Poulenc Trio offered a varied program as part of the Barns’ chamber music series. Comprised of oboe, bassoon and piano, the trio takes its name from Francis Poulenc’s well-known piece for this odd combination of instruments. Their recital on our October 9 broadcast includes the Poulenc Trio, along with Beethoven’s “Gassenhauer” Trio, Andre Previn’s Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon, and Triptico, a work the ensemble commissioned from Spanish-American composer Octavio Vasquez. To celebrate Classical WETA’s tenth anniversary as “Classical for Washington,” we travel from the Barns in Vienna, Virginia, to Alexandria’s Episcopal High School for an all-Baroque concert featuring D.C.-area musicians of The National Chamber Players. Their program, broadcast Monday, October 16, includes the Andante from Bach’s B Minor Sonata for Flute and Harpsichord, BWV 1030. Also on the program is Telemann’s “Paris” Quartet in D Major. In this performance, cellist and NCP artistic director James Lee joins NSO flutists Aaron Goldman and Leah Arsenault and Smithsonian Chamber Music director Kenneth Slowik on harpsichord. The Monday, October 23 program brings us to the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and a recital by the Festival Pablo Casals Prades Collective. They perform Debussy’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Tchaikovsky’s “October: Autumn Song” from The Seasons, and Gabriel Fauré’s expansive and episodic Piano Quartet No. 1. We close out the month on Monday, October 30 at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., featuring Taiwanese-American violinist Paul Huang. In his review, The Washington Post’s Joe Banno wrote that Huang “possesses a big, luscious tone, spot-on intonation and a technique that makes the most punishing string phrases feel as natural as breathing.” Don’t miss Huang’s performance — with pianist Jessica Xylina Osborne — of Tommaso Vitali’s fascinating Chaconne in G Minor, Stravinsky’s Divertimento after his 1928 ballet “The Fairy’s Kiss,” and César Franck’s gorgeous A Major Sonata for Violin and Piano.
