he award-winning Wednesday-night series Nature leads off its 37th season with a three-part BBC program spotlighting cats, who are among the world’s most diverse and successful predators. Filmed over 600 days in 14 countries and featuring 31 species of cat, these programs narrated by F. Murray Abraham uncover the secret lives of big cats and introduce behaviors captured on film for the first time, using the latest camera technology. From the solitary snow leopard in the Himalayas, to the elusive swamp tiger of South Asia, to a remarkably efficient California bobcat, Super Cats reveals how cats thrive in all corners of the globe. Nature uncovers their social sides, complex communication, devoted parental care, courtship rituals, hunting patterns and more. “Extreme Lives” (October 24) features cheetahs, snow leopards, Canada lynx, prides of African lions, and more. “Cats in Every Corner” (October 31) follows fishing cats, jaguars, margays, bobcats, swamp tigers and Africa’s deadly black-footed cat. “Science and Secrets” (November 7) relates how scientists are using new approaches to study cats. eginning Sunday, September 30, WETA premieres new eight-part seasons of ongoing popular Masterpiece family drama The Durrells in Corfu and swashbuckler-romance Poldark. The Durrells in Corfu, based on the memoirs of Gerald Durrell, the youngest member of the bohemian clan, returns for a third series of eccentric adventures on the Greek isle in the 1930s. The series stars Keeley Hawes as the plucky widowed mother to eldest son, novelist Lawrence; Poldark hapless sportsman Leslie; lovelorn teen Margo; and animal-loving Gerald. A death, a pregnancy scare, and a series of moral dilemmas make for a lively season. Poldark also returns on September 30 with a new season of Napoleonic-era adventures starring Aidan Turner as the flawed populist hero Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as his fiery bride Demelza. In the new episodes, opening in 1796, to defend Cornwall and those he loves from his empowered archenemy George Warleggan, Poldark must play the political game on a journey that takes him to the nation’s capital and into new perils. At home, he must work hard to repair his marriage. These Masterpiece productions also air on WETA UK.

ETA presents Seasons 4-6 — ten 90-minute episodes — of the classic detective series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries on Thursdays at 8 p.m. throughout October (with a 9 p.m. start on October 18). In the BBC series based on bestselling books by Elizabeth George, Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small star as Scotland Yard sleuths Thomas Lynley, an aristocrat, and Barbara Havers, his working-class investigative partner. The episodes pick up from the shooting of Havers in Series 3 and follow the professional and personal challenges facing the detectives, who bring very different perspectives to bear in their cases. Also in October, WETA presents The Woman in White, a new five-part BBC adaptation of the classic 1859 Wilkie Collins novel, considered one of the first mystery novels. Jessie Buckley, Ben Hardy, Olivia Vinall, Dougray Scott and Charles Dance star in Inspector Lynley the drama, which follows a young art teacher as he employs sleuthing techniques to come to the aid of a woman he loves who is caught up in a complex intrigue that changes the course of their lives.

new four-part series weaves history and science with living indigenous traditions to bring to life the world created by First Peoples in the Americas. Narrated by musician (and Mohawk) Robbie Robertson, Native America spotlights a land of cities connected by social networks spanning two continents, with unique and sophisticated systems of science, art and writing — and a shared foundational belief system. Made with the active participation of Native American communities and filmed throughout the hemisphere, the series illuminates the splendor of a past whose story has been largely untold. From America’s Southwest to the Amazon, from Mexico City to the Pacific Northwest and in many other locations, episodes highlight Native American traditions and follow field archaeologists using 21st-century tools to uncover narratives of the past. October programs are “From Caves to Cosmos” (October 23) and “Nature to Nations” (October 30); November programs are “Cities of the Sky” (November 6) and “New World Rising” (November 13). Funding for Native America is provided by Anne Ray Foundation and PBS.

new two-part American Experience film, The Circus, explores the colorful history of a popular, influential and distinctly American form of entertainment. The four-hour documentary spotlights the American circus concept from the first one-ring show in the 18th century to 1956, when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey big top was pulled down for the last time. Featuring an array of performers, historians and aficionados, the programs bring to life an era when Circus Day would shut down a town; its stars were among the most famous people in the country; and multitudes gathered to see the improbable and the impossible, the exotic and the spectacular. As the film examines the sociology of the circus phenomenon, it presents the stories of famed impresarios, including P.T. Barnum, James Bailey and the five Ringling Brothers. Major funding for American Experience provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance, Consumer Cellular and by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Major funding for The Circus provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor. Additional funding for American Experience provided by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, The Documentary Investment Group: Gretchen Stone Cook Charitable Foundation, Burton D. and Gloria Rose, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers.

he Virunga mountains in central Africa’s Democratic Republic of Congo are home to two of the most dangerous, spectacular and least-understood volcanoes in the world: Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. In a one-night, two-part NOVA special, an intrepid international team of volcano experts climbs up to the summits and perilously close to their gigantic craters to deploy innovative imaging and remote sensing technology. The scientists are seeking clues to the forces at work deep beneath the volcanoes that are splitting apart East Africa. Learning what feeds frequent eruptions may help the team to predict when the next devastating eruptions could occur and save the lives of the large number of people who live in the shadow of these perils. National corporate funding for NOVA is provided by Draper. Major funding for NOVA is provided by the David H. Koch Fund for Science, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and PBS viewers.

final season of the series Shakespeare Uncovered continues explorations of William Shakespeare’s greatest plays, with six new background history stories airing in Friday-night double features. Hosts Helen Hunt, F. Murray Abraham, Romola Garai, Brian Cox, Simon Russell Beale and Sir Antony Sher — who have each starred in acclaimed performances of the works they examine — weave their personal passions with history, biography, iconic performances, and analysis to tell the stories behind the stories of Shakespeare works “Much Ado About Nothing,” “The Merchant of Venice,” “Measure for Measure,” “Julius Caesar,” “The Winter’s Tale” and “Richard III.” What sparked the creation of each of these works? Where did Shakespeare find his plots? What influenced his writing? Why have these works endured? Major funding for Shakespeare Uncovered, Series 3 is provided by The Joseph & Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Polonsky Foundation, Dana and Virginia Randt, Elaine & W. As she serves the public in a small West Yorkshire town, Cawood has her world turned upside down when criminal Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton of Grantchester), whom she believes is responsible for her daughter’s suicide, is released from prison. As Royce becomes embroiled in a new crime involving an accountant’s plan to kidnap a local girl and hold her for ransom, Cawood becomes obsessed with him. Classical WETA 90.9 FM Byrd, Brahms, Bach and More on Choral Showcase Sundays at 9 p.m.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM

COURTESY THE ARTISTS

he month of October promises a wealth of music on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s program Choral Showcase, beginning October 7 with a program devoted to music from 16th-century Tudor England. From a recording by the Washington-based ensemble The Thirteen — who will be performing a series of concerts this month commemorating the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day — we’ll hear a hymn from the Eton Choirbook alongside a series of partsongs by Robert The Thirteen Fayrfax, William Cornysh and Henry VII. William Byrd’s modest, refined Mass for Three Voices provides a contrast to Thomas Tallis’ more intricate 40-part motet, Spem in Alium. We’ll also explore an early-20th century take on 16th-century English church music: the Mass in g minor for double choir by Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose love of Tudor-era liturgical music resulted in a number of beautiful sacred works of his own. The following week, October 14, Choral Showcase offers the Magnificat, Mary’s ecstatic and very human canticle of praise from the Gospel of St Luke. There have been a number of musical treatments of this heartfelt prayer down through the centuries, with perhaps its most famous setting by Johann Sebastian Bach, which we will hear alongside renditions by Herbert Howells, John Tavener, Arvo Pärt and Bach’s own son, Johann Christian Bach. On Sunday, October 21, we have a new recording of an old favorite: Ein Deutsches Requiem, a German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, in a chamber ensemble orchestration by Iain Farrington performed by the Yale Schola Cantorum. We’ll close the month with a rarely heard work from the mid-20th century inspired by the Book of Revelation of St John the Divine: The Book of the Seven Seals, by Austrian composer Franz Schmidt. This dramatic oratorio for soloists, chorus, organ and orchestra was Schmidt’s last great work and testament, and it had its world premiere in 1938 just one year before his death. Our performance on October 28 features the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus led by Franz Welser-Most, an ardent proponent of Schmidt’s music, and of this work in particular. Join us for Choral Showcase, Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA.

Starting on October 1, we have solo music by J.S. Bach for cello and violin separated by a 21st-century work of English composer Monty Adkins. The concert begins with cellist Seth Parker Woods, giving an inspirational performance of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major. Parker Woods is on a mission to change how we experience music; he does this in part in his concert programming. In this performance he shifts from 18th-century Bach to 21st-century Adkins, performing the latter’s Winter Tendrils for Cello and Tape. Although composed centuries later and sounding completely different, the work still embodies principles set out by Bach. Parker Woods says that Winter Tendrils “Encapsulates the process of one idea that evolves over 10 minutes…the kind of expansion you find in the Bach Suites between the Prelude and the last movements.” It paints a dreamy landscape of a winter stroll through West Yorkshire, where Parker Woods went to University of Huddersfield and received his PhD. Also on this program, we present a selection from another Phillips Collection concert. The award-winning violinist Isabelle Faust takes us back to the time of Bach for one of his most remarkable works, the Partita for Solo Violin No. 2 in D minor. Brahms said of this work: “On one stave, for a small instrument, Bach writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings.” Faust conveys this brilliantly to close the October 1 program. The rest of the month features a contrasting range of works and musicians. Anne Akiko Meyers performs a variety of music on October 8, from Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium Presenting Classical Music All Day, Every Day to a rendition of With Linda Carducci, mornings • Bill Bukowski, middays • Arvo Pärt’s Fratres. Isabelle Faust Nicole Lacroix, afternoons • John Banther and James On October 15 the Jacobs, evenings • And hosting on the weekend: Trey Grammy award-winning Parker Quartet performs an all-Russian Graham, Jay Roberts, Rich Kleinfeldt, Chip Brienza program of Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Stravinsky called Special Programming: “Composing the Revolution!”. Shai Wosner returns on October 22 Monday–Friday at 7 p.m.: PBS NewsHour for part two of his survey of the final six piano sonatas by Schubert. Mondays at 9 p.m.: Front Row Washington Finishing where he left off with part one, his performance is just Saturdays at 1 p.m.: Classical WETA Opera House as passionate, exciting and inspiring. We end the month with viola Sundays at 6 p.m.: From the Top Sundays at 9 p.m.: Choral Showcase soloist Lawrence Power on October 29. You have never heard the First Wednesday of the month at 9 p.m.: viola in such a commanding and powerful solo voice as Power’s; NSO Showcase (November–July) with works by Georges Hue and Shostakovich, York Bowen and Mark-Anthony Turnage, it’s a concert that places the viola in the spotlight it deserves!
