America Remembers 9/11

en years ago, on a beautiful, sunny September Tuesday in Washington and New York, our nation was shocked to find itself under attack, literally from out of that morning’s clear blue sky. So many aspects of American life changed as a result of that day’s appalling events — not the least of which is that a decade later, we remain a nation at war. On the home front, among the manifold changes wrought by September 11, that day brought an abrupt end to our sense of remoteness from turmoil elsewhere in the world. Our spiritual shock was equally profound, with the horrors of the attacks made indelible by powerful imagery. Of course, 9/11 has a special resonance here in Greater Washington — we saw the smoke rising from the Pentagon, we looked anxiously to the skies, we felt the terrible loss of members of our community as we grieved with the nation. We are indebted to the passengers and crew members of Flight 93, who in perishing surely spared our capital, and our community, from additional tragedy. And we honor the service and sacrifice of our fellow citizens in the armed forces who are currently — or have been — in harm’s way across the globe. With a decade of distance from that watershed day in our lives and in America’s history, this month the nation looks back on 9/11 and its aftermath. I invite you to tune in as WETA broadcasts a slate of special television programming marking the anniversary — programs are listed below. On Classical WETA 90.9 FM, we present a special 9/11 Requiem recording, details of which are on page 13.

three-part series illuminates nature’s wonders through adventure travel, journeying to remote places to offer a close-up view of a host of exotic creatures in stunning environments via dramatic photography. The series, featuring denizens of forests, savannahs, and extreme environments, in episode one visits the jungles of India and the misty forests of Borneo and the Amazon. Episode two explores the wideopen grass and woodlands of the world that provide vast habitats for a myriad of creatures and plant life, making stops in the Australian Outback, Africa’s Masai Mara and Brazil’s diverse ecosystem, the Cerrado. The final episode visits Bolivia, the Himalayas, Namibia and Norway to spotlight remarkable creatures in challenging environments.

ystery dramas abound in September, as Masterpiece presents new episodes of Inspector Lewis, starring Kevin Whatley as the Oxford, England, crimefighter and Laurence Fox as his young colleague. Airing Sunday nights at 9 p.m., the series is followed by The WETA Mystery, at 10:30 p.m., with more Inspector Lewis cases. Also on Sunday nights, beginning September 18 at 8 p.m. before Masterpiece, WETA presents original episodes of the acclaimed mystery series Foyle’s War, Inspector Lewis starring Michael Kitchen as the stoic English detective fighting crime on the homefront during World War II. Tune in as well for classic Prime Suspect cases starring Helen Mirren, which return Thursday nights after Sherlock and the weekly double-features of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The acclaimed Prime Suspect programs pick up at Series IV, which features several two-part cases.

wo NOVA programs illustrate the magnitude of this year’s disaster in northeast Japan and the science behind the earthquake and tsunami that followed. The March 11 earthquake was the world’s fourth largest — and Japan’s worst on record. The seismic shock wave released more than 4,000 times the energy of the largest nuclear test ever conducted, shifting the earth’s axis by six inches. NOVA: Japan’s Killer Quake combines on-the-spot reporting, stories of tragedy and survival, and eyewitness videos for a look at the science behind the catastrophe. Then, Surviving the Tsunami: A NOVA Special Presentation examines the post-earthquake tsunami, which sent 30-foot high waves traveling six miles inland, obliterating coastal villages and towns in minutes. With interviews and video footage, this NOVA program presents remarkable tales of human survival.

Hispanic Heritage Month on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

hroughout September, WETA TV 26 and WETA HD celebrate Hispanic Heritage and Latino culture with programming that features performance, biography, cultural history, travel adventure, and documentary film. Among the offerings are a reprised broadcast of the 2009 concert program In Performance at the White House: Fiesta Latina, a WETA production in association with Latino Public Broadcasting that presents a host of luminaries of the Latin music world — Marc Anthony, Jimmy Smits, Pete Escovedo, Gloria Estefan (at left), José Feliciano, George Lopez, Thalía, Tito “El Bambino,” Chicano rock band Los Lobos, and Sheila E. — performing on stage for President and Mrs. Obama. In other performance programming, the series Great Performances features superstar international tenor Plácido Domingo sharing In Performance at the memories of favorite opera roles from his ongoing distinguished career. White House: Fiesta Latina In independent film programming, documentaries feature stories of the killing of a young Latino American (The Ballad of Esequiel Hernández) by U.S. Marines patrolling the border with Mexico in 1997; the stories of a young woman fighting deportation (Immigrant Nation) and of the fate of culturally adrift deportees (Lost Souls); an exploration of anti-immigrant violence and one community’s response (Not in Our Town); and the story of a group of Latino siblings who embark on a quest to understand the fracturing of their family (Calavera Highway). Also airing this month are a history of the Mexican Revolution (The Storm That Swept Mexico); a tour of Mexico led by that nation’s president (Mexico: The Royal Tour); several Globe Trekker visits to Latin America; biographies of prominent Mexican artists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco; and a look at the life and career of Judge Cruz Reynoso, the first Latino state supreme court justice. one-hour movie from the Jim Henson Company features big dinosaurs and big musical numbers to launch the second season of the popular series Dinosaur Train for preschool children. In the film, Buddy and the Pteranodon family begin a prehistoric adventure in the Late Cretaceous period — a journey on the Dinosaur Train, gathering together all their Theropod friends to travel to a big Theropod Club Convention which is being held in Laramidia, the “Dinosaur Big City.” Using funny and engaging characters, the series Dinosaur Train brings history to life, and encourages scientific thinking and other skills as it teaches children about natural science, natural history and paleontology. The program’s second season focuses on exploring the outdoors and natural phenomena and will also feature “Big Dinosaur Week” and a special based on the fan favorite “Dinosaurs A to Z” song. elevision’s longest-running gardening program, The Victory Garden has been on the air since 1975, offering easy lessons that help seasoned and amateur gardeners alike make the most of their outdoor spaces in a way that respects and preserves the environment for future generations. The Emmy award-winning show, hosted by Australian Jamie Durie (left) since 2007, was conceived in response to the difficult economy of the early 1970s and that era’s increased interest in self-sufficiency. With so many Americans aspiring to care for the environ ment and create their own outdoor living spaces, The Victory Garden fuses garden design, earthto-table cooking, and eco-conscious how-to tips. This month, programs from the series’ Season 32 are featured. ark your calendar for Tuesday morning, September 27 at 11 a.m. to hear Classical WETA’s exclusive broadcast of the sold-out National Symphony Orchestra Season Opening Ball Concert. Maestro Christoph Eschenbach, music director of both the National Symphony Orchestra and the Kennedy Center, leads this salute to two birthdays: the Kennedy Center’s 40th and the NSO’s 80th. This special gala concert — recorded on Sunday, September 25 — features two worldrenowned artists: violinist Joshua Bell, who joins the NSO to perform Joshua Bell Bruch’s famous Violin Concerto No. 1, and the celebrated American baritone Thomas Hampson, who will sing selections from Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs, including “The Boatmen’s Dance” and “Simple Gifts.” Dvoˇrák’s Carnival Overture and Ravel’s ever-popular Bolero round out the program. The special broadcast is hosted by Classical WETA’s Nicole Lacroix.

A 9/11 Requiem on Choral Showcase

he tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, brings Saturdays at 1 p.m. to Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday night broadcast Choral Showcase a Please visit classicalweta.org for work that was written for the anniversary. Philadelphia-based composer Robert details on this month’s broadcasts. Moran was commissioned by Trinity Wall Street (the “Ground Zero” church) to write a Requiem for its Youth Chorus. Trinity Requiem receives its world premiere public performance at Trinity on September 7. It has already been recorded, and Classical WETA airs that CD (from the Innova label) on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 9 p.m. on Choral Showcase. The piece is a heartfelt work for young singers, featuring organ, harps and cellos. In the recording, note the sound of a distant siren during the Offertory. An emergency vehicle passed by at that moment during the best performance of the recording session, so the siren — which could not be filtered out — perhaps fittingly, remains. here’s something for everyone this month on Front Row Washington, Classical WETA’s Monday night series of concerts by world-class artists recorded by WETA staff throughout Greater Washington. On Monday, September 5 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA presents a Levine School of Music main campus recital featuring pianist Alex Peh in a program inspired by the clowns of Italy’s Commedia dell’arte. On the bill on Monday, September 12 is an all-Mozart program by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, recorded at the Embassy of Austria. On September 19, Classical WETA visits Columbia, Maryland, for an allBeethoven performance by the Borealis String Quartet at Howard Community College’s Smith Theatre as part of the Candlelight Concert Society’s 39th season. Borealis Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., this ensemble performs Beethoven’s F-Major String Quartet Quartet, Op. 18 No. 1; the C-Major Quartet, Op. 59 No. 3 “The Hero”; and the B-flat Major Quartet, Op. 130, “Liebquartett.” On Monday night, September 26 at 9 p.m., Front Row Washington wraps up the month with the Brazilian Guitar Quartet’s Dumbarton Concerts recital recorded in Georgetown’s historic Dumbarton Church, featuring works by Villa-Lobos, Albéniz and Miranda.
