WETA Focus T

Frontline: The Choice 2016 On Tuesday, September 27 at 9 p.m., Frontline presents The Choice 2016, its quadrennial biographies of the two major party presidential candidates. The program repeats Wednesday, September 28 at 3 p.m. (after an encore presentation of the first presidential debate) and Friday, September 30 at 8:30 p.m. (after Washington Week with Gwen Ifill). The two-hour program goes behind the headlines generated by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to investigate what has shaped them, where they came from, how they lead and why they want to be president. The interwoven investigative biography of Clinton and Trump draws on dozens of interviews from those who know the candidates best — friends and family, advisors and adversaries — as well as authors, journalists and political insiders. What emerges is a deeply reported narrative arc of both candidates’ lives, with in-depth journalism that presents new insights.

And More Also find Election 2016-themed programs in acclaimed late-night series Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley, and tune in Tuesday, September 6 at 10 p.m. for America By the Numbers: The New Deciders, in which journalist Maria Hinojosa reports on demographic groups whose power and influence are growing, tracking the link between population change and voting.

his month, WETA premieres a new documentary, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War, from our longtime production partner Ken Burns and filmmaker Artemis Joukowsky. The film, produced in association with WETA, chronicles the inspiring efforts of a remarkable American couple to aid refugees in war-torn Europe. Early in September, we also present the broadcast 9/11 Inside the Pentagon, marking the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. September heralds the first of the Election 2016 presidential debates, which will further illuminate the candidates vying to lead our democracy — and their positions on issues facing the nation. At WETA, home to public television’s marquee news and public affairs productions PBS NewsHour and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill, we fully embrace our responsibility as a public broadcaster to help foster an informed, engaged citizenry. Tune in to our trusted broadcasts to stay up to date. In addition to our regular newscasts, NewsHour specials will bring the debates, live, to public television audiences around the country, covering each of these events and offering analysis. Washington Week will also report on the debates, among the news of each week, and early this month the show will take to the road again — taping before a live audience in the battleground state of Colorado. As part of our election season program offerings, we also feature Frontline: The Choice 2016, the series’ quadrennial journalistic biography of the major presidential candidates; the WETA presentation American Umpire, spotlighting American foreign policy; and the series The Contenders-16 for ’16, which looks back on past political campaigns. New film by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky is produced in association with WETA and airs September 20 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

A

new 90-minute documentary, co-directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky and presented by WETA for broadcast to public television audiences nationwide, tells the story of a little-known but important mission by an American Unitarian minister and his wife to rescue refugees and dissidents in Europe before and after the start of World War II. Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War spotlights Waitstill and Martha Sharp’s bold commitment to numerous life-threatening missions in Europe, where for two years they helped to save hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and refugees. The co-production of No Limits Media, Inc., and Florentine Films, in association with WETA, explores how as Americans remained mostly detached from news reports of the growing refugee crisis in Europe, the couple from Wellesley, Massachusetts, mobilized in early 1939 to help. The Sharps would face harrowing encounters with Nazi police, narrowly escape arrest and watch as the Third Reich invaded Eastern Europe. Their marriage would be tested and the two children they left in the care of their parish would be saddened by their parents’ absence. But dozens of Jewish scientists, journalists, doctors, powerful anti-Nazi activists and children would find their way to freedom as a result of the Sharps’ efforts. To recognize their heroic sacrifice, Martha and Waitstill were honored at Yad Vashem in Israel and declared “Righteous Among the Nations.” Among the thousands so honored, there are only five Americans, including the Sharps. The Sharps’ story is cinematically told through the letters and journals of the couple, with Tom Hanks as

the voice of Waitstill and Marina Goldman as the voice of Martha. It features firsthand interviews with the now adult children whom the Sharps saved, as well as leading historians, authors and Holocaust scholars. “The story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp is one of the most incredible tales of compassion, sacrifice and heroism that I have ever heard, and I was completely unaware of it until five years ago when Artemis Joukowsky first shared it with me,” said Ken Burns. “Nearly three years before America as a nation became involved in the Second World War, these two unassuming, so-called ‘ordinary’ Americans gave up everything they knew and loved and risked their lives to become involved in a war 4,000 miles away because they knew there were people in grave danger who needed help.” The film’s co-director, Artemis Joukowsky, is the grandson of Waitstill and Martha Sharp and has spent decades researching their story. “Beyond the cloak-anddagger suspense of my grandparents’ experience, it is a story of what America meant to refugees fleeing war-torn countries to build new lives,” said Joukowsky. In conjunction with the broadcast, WETA has partnered with educational organization Facing History and Ourselves — dedicated to raising students’ awareness of injustice and intolerance — to create curriculum materials to aid middle and high school teachers in using the film and additional primary sources to engage students in the Sharps’ story of sacrifice, rescue and moral courage. To learn more about the Sharps and the film, visit the website defyingthenazis.org.

Funding for Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War is provided by members of The Better Angels Society, including Jan and Rick Cohen and Jonathan and Jeannie Lavine; The Starr Foundation; The Threshold Foundation; and donations from individuals. Local broadcast of the program is supported by Morningstar Foundation, Isadore and Bertha Gudelsky Family Foundation and Jacob and Charlotte Lehrman Foundation.

9/11 Inside the Pentagon

Tuesday, September 6 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

S

urrounding the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, a new one-hour documentary presents first-hand accounts of the attack on the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia — and spotlights the courage and perseverance that kept the nation’s defense headquarters operating. When hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, 184 people perished inside the building and on board the flight. While much of the media coverage of the events of September 11 has focused on the tragedies that unfolded in New York City and aboard United Flight 93, the story of what happened inside the Pentagon — the extent of the damage, the risk posed to the national defense apparatus, and the heroism that day — has remained underexplored. This film revisits the events of 9/11 from the perspective of those working at or near the building and features rarely seen Department of Defense footage taken from inside the Pentagon after the attack — in addition to interviews with those who experienced the attack, including Pentagon personnel, first responders, aviation experts and journalists. Following the film on September 6, an encore presentation of the Frontline program The Man Who Knew relates the saga of FBI Agent John O’Neill and his warnings about Osama bin Laden before the 9/11 attacks. On Wednesday, September 7 at 9 p.m., NOVA: 15 Years of Terror investigates the psychology of a terrorist and examines how radical organizations make use of modern propaganda and social media tools to cultivate adherents.

Masterpiece Drama on WETA TV 26/HD Poldark, Season 2

Indian Summers, Season 2

A

begins September 11 at 10 p.m.

idan Turner stars as courageous 18th-century class warrior Ross Poldark, fighting for justice in his native Cornwall, England, in a new nine-part season of Poldark on Masterpiece, premiering Sunday, September 25 at 8 p.m. with a two-hour episode. As Season 2 opens, Poldark stands accused of murder and “wrecking” — luring a cargo ship to the rocks for plunder. It’s a capital offense, and the judge is unsympathetic. Eleanor Tomlinson returns as Demelza, Poldark’s wife and equal in passion, wit, and daring; and joining the cast is Gabriella Wilde as Caroline, a young heiress living with her rich uncle, played by John Nettles (Midsomer Murders). The characters inhabit the world created by Winston Graham in his bestselling “Poldark” novels, published between 1945 and 2002.

Returning this month is Masterpiece potboiler Indian Summers, which in a 10-part final season beginning Sunday, September 11 at 10 pm. spotlights more romance and revolution in the twilight of the British Raj. Set in 1935 in the Himalayan hill station of Simla, a retreat for the ruling class, the drama follows colonials and Indians during a period of wrenching political and social change. Returning stars include Henry LloydHughes as bureaucrat Ralph Whelan, Julie Walters as club hostess Cynthia Coffin, Jemima West (above) as Ralph’s sister Alice, and Nikesh Patel (above) as Aafrin Dalal, an Indian navigating between the colonials and the Independence movement. In Season 2, an attempt on the Viceroy’s life and the arrival of Lord Hawthorne put Ralph’s future in doubt.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM Choral Showcase Celebrates a Washington Choral Icon Sunday, September 18 at 9 p.m.

A

Classical WETA 90.9 FM

dear friend of music and of all of us, J. Reilly Lewis, passed away unexpectedly on June 9. Reilly headed up Washington Bach Consort and Cathedral Choral Society. I’m honored to celebrate his life and work on Choral Showcase on September 18 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. I many times delighted in chatting with Reilly, and what stood out for me, J. Reilly Lewis even above his knowledge and wit, was his passion. We talked after the 2011 earthquake about the damage to his beloved space — Washington National Cathedral. He adored the Cathedral, beginning when he was an 8-year-old member of its junior choir. He loved its organ, and savored the “vast acoustic,” as he liked to say. He was proud to be able to rehearse his Cathedral Choral Society there each week, and told me once, in preparing Handel’s Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day, how happy he was that Handel had included strategic rests so they could fully capitalize on the thrill of cathedral acoustics. Washington is one of the best choral towns anywhere, and Reilly luxuriated in the richness. He spoke about how ensembles of every shape and dimension give us a stimulating variety of different approaches to singing. He loved the unsurpassed caliber of soloists here too, often choosing his Consort soloists from the chorus, saying, “It’s home-grown, yes, but I couldn’t do any better no matter where I looked!” Reilly was famous for his visceral descriptions of music. Talking about one of Handel’s coronation anthems, Reilly’s words were as alive as the piece itself. He savored the gradual build-up, as only Handel could write, leading to the fabulous D Major chord. “Zadok, the Priest!,” he exclaimed (in tempo, of course). In speaking about Bach’s B minor Mass, a signature piece for the Consort, I asked him how he approached a work he’d conducted so many times before — 35, in fact. It’s not, “what can I do different this time,” Reilly said. “We’re not conquering the piece. We approach it with reverence for the privilege of experiencing it, and, when we do, the music guides us, and takes us wherever we’re going to go.”

Speaking of the school year, consider the arc of Levine Music, which began with 70 students in the basement of a small church. Forty years later, Levine Music serves thousands of students across five campuses. Last season’s 40th-anniversary celebration included a recital by frequent Levine performer and cellist Igor Zubkovsky; his Levine faculty wife, pianist Anna Ouspenskaya; and their son, violinist Fedor Ouspensky, who began music lessons at Levine when he was just five years old. Their recital on the September 12 broadcast includes two monumental trios: Beethoven’s familiar “Archduke” Trio and Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 3. Musical America’s 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year is violinist Jennifer Koh. This past March, Ms. Koh and

Israeli-born pianist Shai Wosner offered a Beethoventhemed recital at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington’s Polinger Concert Series in Rockville. On the program was a new work by Anthony Cheung called “Elective Memory,” commissioned by Koh as “a piece in conversation with Beethoven’s Sonata op. 96” — the work which ends the recital. Hear those performances on the Monday, September 19 broadcast. Having begun with a nod to the new school year, we end the month at a school, namely Episcopal High School in Alexandria, with a recital by the National Chamber Players. The September 26 broadcast features Haydn’s fascinating and jazzy E Major Piano Trio and Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Souvenirs de Florence string sextet in a not-to-be-missed performance.
