WETA Focus T

his month, we are delighted to premiere a very timely new film in WETA’s decades-long partnership with our good friend, distinguished filmmaker Ken Burns. The two-hour documentary The Mayo Clinic: Faith - Hope - Science — a collaboration between WETA, Florentine Films and Ewers Brothers Productions — explores the 150-year history of the famed American medical institution, spotlights its patient-centered approach to healthcare services, and presents examples of its values in practice today via patient stories. Directed by Ken and filmmakers Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers, this engaging production raises fundamental questions about healthcare. What should patient care look like in America? And how can that care be more effective, more efficient and more compassionate? As with each of Ken’s extraordinary films with WETA, the study of the past offers intriguing lessons for the future. Learning how the Mayo Clinic has met the changing demands of healthcare can inform how we as a nation might face the ongoing challenges of patient care. I hope you have an opportunity to view The Mayo Clinic: Faith - Hope - Science, which will make an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the delivery of healthcare in America. In other WETA September television offerings, we present entertaining dramas, a wide array of programming in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and more from The Great American Read. Thank you for your support of WETA.

eill Rea stars as Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd in a new season of contemporary New Zealand police drama The Brokenwood Mysteries. Despite relishing the leisurely ways and quaint charms of country life, the sleuth knows all is not well in the picturesque but crime-ridden (fictional) town of Brokenwood. Along with his methodical partner, Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland), eager young DC Sam Breen (Nic Sampson) and medical examiner Dr. Gina Kadinsky (Cristina Ionda), Shepherd confronts the violent impulses and roiling passions beneath the surface of the community. Filmed on the country’s beautiful North Island, the series presents four new feature-length, stand-alone mysteries. In the first case, the team witnesses a skydiving accident and must sort out what happened; in the second, they must solve the killing of a woman with an arrow; then the detectives must figure out what’s behind a farm catastrophe; and the final case unfolds surrounding a new resident in a local rest home.

n the Australian drama series The Heart Guy, known in that country as Doctor Doctor, Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser) is a rising star in the Sydney heart surgery ranks who experiences a spectacular fall from grace. Gifted, charming and infallible, Knight is a hedonist who believes he can live outside the rules, but his “work hard, play harder” philosophy bites him. Knocked off his pedestal by a medical tribunal for personal misconduct, he is forced to serve as a general practitioner in a rural community under-resourced with medical personnel and equipment: his own childhood hometown of Whyhope. There Knight must reconnect with family and an old flame and work in the local medical clinic under the eagle eye of his supervisor, where he must attempt to mature — and make further human connections, the very thing that is his weakness.

three-part series airing over two evenings, Ancient Invisible Cities presents beneath-the-street and off-the-beaten-path explorations of three of the world’s most intriguing ancient cities — Athens, Cairo and Istanbul — and their surroundings to offer new perspectives on ancient human civilization. Armed with a cutting-edge arsenal of high-definition 3D scanners, sub-sea LiDAR and multi-spectral images, series host Professor Darius Arya uncovers age-old architectural and technological achievements, illuminating long-forgotten enigmatic structures and buried treasures that are hidden beneath the cityscapes where successive civilizations and generations have added layers to the city. Episodes culminate in an augmented reality adventure, in which Arya enters a hologram and interacts with visualizations of the past.

KEN BURNS PRESENTS

THE MAYO CLINIC FAITH • HOPE • SCIENCE New WETA co-production with Florentine Films & Ewers Brothers Productions airs Tuesday, September 25, 9-11 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD, repeating September 26 at 10 p.m.

T

he new film The Mayo Clinic: Faith - Hope - Science explores the Mayo Clinic’s 150-year history and the story of the institution’s patient-centered approach to care. The two-hour documentary, produced in partnership with WETA, presents a timely look at how one institution has met the changing demands of healthcare while maintaining a commitment to its founding values — and what that can teach us about facing the challenges of patient care today. Directed by Ken Burns, Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers, the program blends historical narrative with contemporary interviews — featuring Mayo staff and patients including John McCain and the Dalai Lama as well as leading healthcare experts in the United States. Peter Coyote narrates, and Tom Hanks, Sam Waterston, Blythe Danner and Josh Lucas voice historical figures in the production. “The history of healthcare is a larger reflection of who we are as a nation,” said Ken Burns. “It includes advances in science and technology, but also touches on more universal themes of love and compassion. This is an extraordinary story that places our fundamental need to care for each other within the larger framework of America’s healthcare system and modern medicine.”

History of the Clinic

The documentary tells the story of Dr. William Worrall Mayo, an English immigrant who began practicing medicine with his sons in Rochester, Minnesota, and partnered with a nearby group of Catholic nuns, the

Sisters of Saint Francis, to care for patients. From these origins, the Mayo Clinic now treats more than one million patients a year from 50 states and 150 countries at campuses in Minnesota, Florida, and Arizona and their affiliates. “When the Mayo Clinic began in the late 19th century, the medical community was so amazed at its success, they dubbed it ‘The Miracle in the Cornfield,’” said co-director Erik Ewers. “But as unique as Mayo may be, it’s not a miracle. It’s about incredibly determined and compassionate men and women who came together to figure out how to create a model of care that puts patients before profits.”

W.W. Mayo imparted a simple adage to his sons, “The needs of the patient come first.” They wouldn’t treat diseases, they would treat people. The film examines how — in a world in which healthcare delivery is predominantly fragmented among individual specialties — the Mayo Clinic philosophy is to practice a multispecialty, team-based approach that has, from its beginnings, created a culture that thrives on collaboration.

Patient Stories As the documentary explores Mayo Clinic’s patient care, pioneering research, and achievements in education, it spotlights people who have come to the medical facility looking for answers. Among those followed are a oneyear-old girl whose brain cancer is treated with innovative proton-beam therapy; a concert violinist whose career is saved by experimental deep-brain stimulation; an elite athlete whose surgery for a rare heart disease gives her renewed hope that she can return to active competition; and a man who doctors treat for advanced pancreatic cancer with a unique combination of surgery and chemotherapy that challenges conventional assumptions. Throughout, the film demonstrates the power of collaboration in medicine, the role of humanity in science, and the importance of hope in healing, providing insight into ways to make America’s healthcare delivery system more effective, efficient and compassionate. The Mayo Clinic: Faith - Hope - Science is a production of Florentine Films, Ewers Brothers Productions and WETA. The documentary was executive-produced by Ken Burns and directed by Burns, Erik Ewers and Christopher Loren Ewers, produced by Julie Coffman, and written by David Blistein. Sundays, Sept. 9-23 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

n September, Masterpiece features an adaptation of Jessie Burton’s bestselling 2014 novel The Miniaturist, starring (l-r:) Anya Taylor-Joy, Alex Hassell and Romola Garai in a three-part series filmed in the Netherlands and the U.K. Set in 1686, when the Dutch Republic was one of the world’s richest and most religiously zealous nations, the story follows Nella, a naïve 18-year-old from the provinces who is wooed by Johannes Brandt (Hassell), a handsome, prosperous Amsterdam merchant. The two wed, but she is immediately left in the care of his overbearing sister, Marin (Garai), and the household’s two controlling servants. After Johannes returns, he remains emotionally cool to Nella, but he presents her with a special wedding gift: an exquisite model of the very house where she is now living. Johannes instructs Nella to furnish it by calling on the services of one of the local makers of miniature objects — a miniaturist. This seemingly clairvoyant figure begins sending new creations that appear to predict the future, hinting at closely held secrets, and the heroine is led to discover the truths of her mysterious new home. Also this month, WETA premieres new eight-part seasons of ongoing dramas The Durrells in Corfu and Poldark on Masterpiece. The Durrells in Corfu, Series 3 begins September 30 at 8 p.m. and Poldark, Series 4 begins at 9 p.m. Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking and Farmers Insurance® with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

omedian Jack Whitehall, David Suchet (Poirot) and Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) star in the first-ever television adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s first published novel, considered one of the greatest comic novels of all time. Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) and Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire) co-star. In the three-part miniseries — well-received in the United Kingdom last year — inoffensive divinity student Paul Pennyfeather (Whitehall) is unfairly expelled from Oxford University after a prank, kicking off a chain of events that no one, least of all Paul himself, could have anticipated. Without a fortune to fall back on, Paul is forced to take a teaching position at a substandard rural school in Wales, where he meets a wealthy, beautiful widow. Has his luck turned? And…which way?

ETA UK reprises a series featuring mystery novelist Agatha Christie’s characters Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, an ordinary married couple who stumble into spycraft and end up being good at it. The six episodes, which include two three-part storylines (The Secret Adversary and N or M?), star David Walliams and Jessica Raines (Call the Midwife). The two espionage-mysteries, set in 1950s Britain at the start of the Cold War, find Tommy and Tuppence bickering, sweet on each other, and soon knee-deep in danger. Tuppence throws herself head first into every mystery with passion and fervor, often to the dismay of her husband, the more cautious of the pair. James Fleet co-stars as Tommy’s uncle, Major Anthony Carter, an official in British Military Intelligence.

I Want My Wife Back

ix-part series I Want My Wife Back stars Ben Miller (Death in Paradise) as devoted husband Murray, who is trying to win back his estranged wife Bex — portrayed by Caroline Catz (Doc Martin) — and bungling it at every step. The modern romantic comedy is from the writers of comedy series The Worst Week of My Life. Murray is the nicest fellow one could hope to meet and a devoted husband; he works hard and is a loyal friend and colleague. But when he throws a surprise 40th birthday party for his wife, it’s he who gets the biggest surprise of the night: she’s leaving him. For Bex, the decision has been a long time coming; Murray is so focused on his job that he can’t find time for her. For Murray, however, the news comes completely out of the blue. Will his mission to resurrect his marriage end in triumph, or disaster?

BBC nature documentary employs spy cameras to get closer than ever before to the world’s greatest land predator. Icebergcam, Blizzardcam and Snowballcam are a new generation of covert devices on a mission to explore the Arctic islands of Svalbard in Norway. Backed up by Snowcam and Driftcam, these state-of-the-art camouflaged cameras reveal the extraordinary curiosity and intelligence of the polar bear. The devices are just a breath away when two sets of cubs emerge from winter maternity dens. They also capture the moment when the sea ice breaks away from the island in the spring — and follow the fate of bears who journey across the drifting ice in search of seals versus that of the bears marooned on the island. The cameras track polar bears as they hunt seals, raid bird colonies, dive for kelp, and more. Also this month: The Coroner continues into Series 2, Mondays at 9 p.m.; Downton Abbey on Masterpiece continues into Series 4, Wednesdays at 9 p.m.; Vera continues into Series 3, Thursdays at 10 p.m.; Grantchester on Masterpiece enters Series 2, Fridays at 9 p.m.; and Shetland continues Saturdays at 9 p.m.

usicians and composers down through history have been both beguiled and inspired by the stories and songs from the Bible, and this month on Sunday-night program Choral Showcase on Classical WETA 90.9 FM we’ll hear a wide range of choral works drawn from books in the Old Testament. George Frideric Handel dipped quite often into the Bible when searching for subjects for his dramatic Belshazzar’s Feast operas and oratorios, and on September 2, we will hear one of his earliest, Israel in Egypt. This is the one oratorio closest in structure to the better-known Messiah, with texts drawn directly from Bible verses. It depicts the enslavement of the Israelites, their release from bondage, and their song of victory after crossing the Red Sea. On September 9, we will feature a work from the mid-20th century: William Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, from a story (depicted above by Rembrandt) in the Book of Daniel about the arrogant and gluttonous King of Babylon, whose deadly fate is determined when he calls the prophet Daniel in to “read the writing on the wall.” We will follow that with a mass setting by 16th-century composer Orlande de Lassus, based upon a motet that recalls a story from Genesis about Joseph and his brothers in the land of Egypt, and his reunification with them and his father, Jacob. The triumphs and trials of another prophet are dramatized in Felix Mendelssohn’s popular oratorio, Elijah. Mendelssohn prepared two versions: the first one in his native German and the second translated into English for the city of Birmingham, which commissioned the work and presented its world premiere in 1846. It is this version, sung in English, that we’ll hear on Choral Showcase on September 16. On the following program, September 23, we will turn to the Book of Psalms for several different settings of these beloved songs, including the Psalms of David by Heinrich Schütz, alongside settings by composers such as Charles Hubert H. Parry, William Walton, Howard Goodall and Steve Reich. We conclude our biblical month on September 29 with a later and more dramatic oratorio by George Frideric Handel called Solomon, after the wise and prosperous king of Israel. This work is the source of one of Handel’s best-known instrumental pieces, “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.” Enjoy magnificent choral music each Sunday night at 9 p.m.

une in each Monday at 9 p.m. this month for the program Front Row Washington on Classical WETA 90.9 FM as we listen to performances from four different concert series in the Washington area, starting on September 3 at Dumbarton Oaks with pianist Dénes Várjon. He includes in this concert A Far Cry less frequently performed works by Bartók, like For Children and Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, inspired by folk songs. Juxtaposed with these works is the virtuosic, romantic Elegy No. 2, followed by the even more difficult Gaspard de la nuit by Ravel. With other works by Chopin and Beethoven, this is an ambitious piano recital not to be missed. We visit Dumbarton Concerts on September 10 for a 2015 performance of the conductor-free ensemble, A Far Cry. This Grammy-nominated, artist-run string orchestra from Boston actively seeks out thoughtful, innovative and unpredictable repertoire. The concert opens with one of minimalist composer Philip Glass’s most traditional works, Symphony No. 3 for String Orchestra — the third movement of which untraditionally features each violinist taking a turn performing the solo melody line. The concert continues with a work by American composer Gabriela Lena Frank, who often explores her multicultural heritage through her music. Her composition Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout mixes western classical and Andean folk music traditions, while mimicking flute instruments and bringing to life Andean personalities. The first three movements, respectively, depict the toyo, one of the largest and deepest sounding pan flutes; the tarka, a wooden flute that can create split tones, mimicked here by the strings; and the zampoña, a pan flute that can also make two sounds at once, performed here with strings using double stops. The final three movements portray Andean figures such as Chasqui, the legendary Inca period runner who delivered messages to towns separated by Andean peaks — and include Coqueteos, a flirtatious love song sung by characteristic romanceros. Finishing this expressive concert are Bachianas Brasileiras No. 9 by Villa-Lobos and Alberto Ginastera’s Concerto per Corde. On September 17 the final week of summer begins and, as we say “A reveure!” to the season, we enjoy 10 Catalan Folk Songs by Miguel Llobet, with guitarist Łukasz Kuropaczewski from his Marlow Guitar Series performance, alongside 24 Preludes for Guitar by Manuel Ponce and Rossiniana No. 3 by Mauro Giuliani. The last program this month, on September 24, features pianist Alexander Kobrin in his Beethoven Sonata Project, in which he is performing all of the composer’s sonatas in order. In this concert from Downtown Piano Works in Frederick, Maryland, Kobrin gets into the middle piano sonatas, including Moonlight and Pastorale.
