LEFT BANK PICTURES/YELLOW BIRD/ BBC
tarting in November, WETA presents Thriller Thursday double features of the Emmy- and BAFTA-winning crime drama Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh. The first television adaptation of author Henning Mankell’s internationally bestselling mysteries (and Branagh’s first recurring television role), the drama follows scruffy, sensitive Swedish detective Inspector Kurt Wallander as he probes gritty murders. Filmed on location in southern Sweden (and later, Latvia as well), and set in the bucolic seaside town of Ystad, Wallander follows the middle-aged sleuth as he battles personal demons while solving heinous crimes. As the drama opens, the policeman is burdened by a recent break-up with his wife, blood sugar gone haywire, a daughter trying to run his life, and an artist father succumbing to Alzheimer’s who paints the same scene over and over. The manifold challenges in the protagonist’s personal life focus his concentration on the complex cases unfolding around him. WETA presents all four seasons of Wallander — 12 episodes — in November and December. Episodes are also available for binge-viewing with WETA Passport. For more crime drama, tune in Sundays on WETA PBS and WETA Metro for Masterpiece mysteries Grantchester (9 p.m.) and Baptiste (10 p.m.), and find many additional viewing options on WETA UK.

The Milky Way
BBC STUDIOS
dazzling new five-part PBS and BBC NOVA science miniseries explores the history and future of the universe on Wednesdays in November. The series began October 27 with the program Age of Stars (for those who missed the broadcast, episodes can be streamed on the PBS Video App or via WETA’s website, weta.org), and November episodes are Milky Way, Alien Worlds, Black Holes and Big Bang. The series, a sequel to and expansion on NOVA’s acclaimed 2019 series The Planets, uses CGI imagery, the latest scientific research, and archival footage captured during scientific missions to tell the story of the universe, from its moment of inception 13.8 billion years ago, to what could be its ultimate fate, trillions upon trillions of years in the distant future. Delving into the vastness of space, Universe Revealed spotlights powerful moments when the universe changed forever — and examines the universe’s characters and how their fates are intertwined with our own. The cast list in this ongoing drama features rogue planets, black holes more massive than a billion suns, and more — and each character has its own extraordinary story to tell. State-of-the-art animation delivers photorealistic glimpses of the birth of the very first star, the chaos created as two galaxies collide, and the power of a supermassive black hole as it flings a star across space so violently that it’s still traveling millions of years later.

Nov. 8: Independent Lens: Ferguson Rises • The Missouri protests surrounding the 2014 killing of Black teenager Michael Brown Jr. by a white police officer propelled Black Lives Matter to prominence and inspired a new global civil rights movement. This film explores the aftermath of Brown’s killing from many perspectives — interwoven with an intimate portrayal of a Black father’s grief and resilience. n WETA Arts in November, learn the fascinating story of the “little sister” of the Statue of Liberty. The 9-foot-tall, 1,000-pound version of Lady Liberty was installed on the front lawn of the French ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C. this past summer. The statue’s journey to America and complicated ocean crossing from Paris is a reminder of the long relationship between the two countries, even amid recent diplomatic tensions. The segment also highlights the history of Lady Liberty’s sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and his “Fountain of Light and Water” at the U.S. Botanic Garden in the District. In addition, this episode of WETA Arts introduces viewers to the members of the American Military Spouses Choir as they gather to sing together for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began. The choir will be featured in WETA Arts Holiday Concert, a special program airing in December. Also, host Felicia Curry speaks with Lisa Warwick, interim director of the D.C. Public Library’s People’s Archive, about how its local music collection tells the cultural story of the District of Columbia. WETA Arts repeats Nov. 15 on WETA PBS & WETA Metro — and streams on the PBS Video App and weta.org.

new program reveals the fascinating story of the 1826 performance at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Little Italy that marked the arrival of Italian opera in the New World. The Oratorio — hosted by Martin Scorsese — explores the richness of the immigrant experience, the beginning of a cultural awakening in America, and the enduring power of art. Following the 9 p.m. documentary, at 10 p.m. Da Ponte’s Oratorio: A Concert for New York — a restaging of the iconic performance lost to history — premieres as well. The Oratorio features interviews with opera theater director Claudio Orazi and musicologist Francesco Zimei, who led the efforts to restage the performance that brought Italian opera to New York City. Jared Lamenzo, music director and organ master, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the inventive engineering needed to keep St. Patrick’s 150-year-old organ working. The film also highlights the enduring importance of the cathedral in present-day New York with current parishioners who discuss the church and their community.

istory series Secrets of the Dead features four new episodes this month, examining iconic events and other topics to shine new light on the past: Nov. 3: The First Circle of Stonehenge • A decade-long archaeological quest reveals that the oldest stones of Stonehenge, Europe’s most iconic Neolithic monument, had a previous life before being moved 150 miles to Salisbury Plain — they originally belonged to a much earlier sacred site in West Wales.
Nov. 10: Hindenburg’s Fatal Flaws • In 1937, the Hindenburg airship exploded into flames upon landing, killing 36 people in the horrifying crash. For decades, the exact cause of the Hindenburg’s crash has remained a mystery. Now, recently discovered letters, maintenance reports and company memos lead experts to point to critical construction flaws. Nov. 17: A Samurai in the Vatican • In the early 17th century, a feudal lord sent a Japanese diplomatic mission to Europe to negotiate with the Pope and the King of Spain in hopes opening up a new trade route. Led by samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and Franciscan monk Luis Sotelo, the expedition spent seven years traveling the globe.

Nov. 24: The Caravaggio Heist • In 1984, a Maltese national treasure went missing from the cathedral of St. John in Valletta — a masterpiece by the legendary Italian painter Caravaggio. After years, Father Marius Zerafa, director of museums in Malta, managed to communicate with the thieves and set off on a quest to recover the priceless painting.
n new Nature film The Elephant and the Termite (Nov. 3), witness the dramas of Africa’s waterholes, which are central to animal life. This episode visits southern Kenya to spotlight these important places that are home to a wide array of creatures, including many who live at an elephant’s toenail height, such as Nature: Born in the Rockies frogs, dung beetles, and chameleons. This is the story of the relationship between Africa’s largest and smallest — and the wildlife community they support. Two Peabody Award-winning filmmakers and their team spent two years camped out at a waterhole to record life at Africa’s great wildlife meeting place. Also tune in to the two-part Nature series Born in the Rockies (Nov. 10 & 17) and follow the drama as animal families struggle to survive in one of the world’s most challenging and spectacular habitats. Through the seasons, filmmakers follow the lives of a herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and their newborn lambs; a mother grizzly bear and her cubs; and a flock of sandhill cranes and their offspring.

n an encore presentation, WETA reprises a 2015 production from director Ric Burns that spotlights the small group of religious radicals whose determination to establish a separatist religious community planted the seeds for America’s founding. The Pilgrims brought with them ideas and practices that would help to form the political and cultural DNA of America, but the history of their colony has been shrouded in myth and misconception. The two-hour documentary, co-produced by WETA and Steeplechase Films, in association with the BBC and CTVC, brings to life the unvarnished story of America’s early settlers. Oliver Platt narrates; and Roger Rees portrays William Bradford, the Plymouth Plantation governor who wrote the definitive history of the early Massachusetts colony.

scar-winner Judi Dench leads a superb ensemble cast in this classic Elizabeth Gaskell adaptation — a rich and comic drama based on the author’s novels about life in a small, mid-19th-century English market town during an era of rapid social transformation. The poignant story follows the minor absurdities and major tragedies in the lives of Cranford residents during one year as railway construction from the city of Manchester draws nearer, bringing fears of change. In parallel, the arrival of a handsome London doctor with new medical methods causes a stir. The series and its sequel stream with WETA Passport.
Africa & Britain: A Forgotten History
Sundays at 9 p.m. starting Nov. 14 at 9 p.m. on WETA UK
he history of Black people in Britain is often reduced to the story of recent settlement, but African people have been part of British history for 2,000 years. This landmark four-part series, hosted by historian David Olusoga, challenges preconceptions, telling the story of this cross-continental relationship, reaching back into Roman times when the first Black Africans were recorded in Britain. Forgotten art vaults are unlocked; artifacts are re-examined; and spotlighted are an enslaved young African brought to Britain under the protection of Queen Victoria, the legacy of slavery, and the impact of the world wars on integration in Britain.

Mark Bonnar and Jamie Sives star as the co-conspirators — attorney Max and slacker Jake. Ruth Bradley stars as Angie, the victim’s niece and closest relative. Arriving in Edinburgh from her home in Chicago, Angie meets the brothers at her uncle’s wake, where they have come to retrieve incriminating evidence. Angie and Jake hit it off, which complicates Max’s plan to escape justice.

n a film airing as part of Native American Heritage Month (visit weta.org/nativeamerican for programs), Native American veterans reflect on their experiences in the military during the Vietnam War and how their communities helped them carry their warrior legacy proudly. From the Marine Corps to the Navy to the U.S. Army, veterans Valerie Barber, Art Owen, Sandy White Hawk, Vince Beyl, and civilian eyapaha (announcer) Jerry Dearly recall their memories of war. Even as they struggled with their relationship to the United States government from past oppression, the Dakota, Lakota and Ojibwe warriors still felt compelled to honor their duty to their people as Akichita | Ogichidaag | Warriors — as protectors of the people.

he fight for statehood in Washington, D.C. represents only the latest effort to restore basic rights lost by District residents at the country’s founding. In four turning points from 1783 to today, the film The Last Battlefront: Quest for the Vote in Washington, D.C. presents the first historical production created about this issue. Learn about how what happened in the District can be traced to the nation’s earliest days — to fights among founding leaders over centralized versus decentralized government, and to core themes of race and politics, which have shaped America throughout its history. Anna Reid Jhirad directed the film, a collaboration between Marigold Productions and Catholic University of America.

The Sammies, known as the “Oscars” of government service, are a highly respected honor with a rigorous selection process. Named for the Partnership for Public Service’s late founder, these Samuel J. iring as part of Native American Heritage Month, Unspoken takes a moving and insightful look into a dark chapter of American history — the story, operation and legacy of the federal Indian Boarding School system, whose goal was total assimilation into Anglo civilization of Native Americans at the cost of stripping away Native culture, tradition and language. The film starts with pre-history and comes full circle to modern day, told in first-person Native American voice by the people who continue to live with the consequences. 21st Century Consort on Front Row Washington
We feature the 21st Century Consort on November 29 with their concert, “Between Worlds,” which was borrowed from and organized in relation to Between Worlds: The Art of Bill Traylor by Leslie Umberger for the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Bill Traylor was born into slavery in 1853 and lived through Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Great Migration, before becoming an artist at age 85. He died in 1949 at 95. In this concert, 21st Century Consort performs music infused with cultural influences that were likely a part of Traylor’s experience, such as Carlos Simon’s Lickety Split, and Isai Rabiu’s Freedom. They also play imaginative and storytelling works such as Migration Miniatures by Corey Dundee and the Clarinet Sonata by David Baker.

The spotlight is on Baroque opera on November 6 with George Frideric Handel’s Orlando. Considered to be a masterpiece of structure and music, the opera is based on the medieval adventures of a young man in a world of chivalry and sorcery. As was common practice in the Baroque era, the title character was written for a male countertenor — a high-pitched male voice. We’ll hear a production of Chicago’s Haymarket Opera Company, which specializes in early opera, starring worldrenowned countertenor Bejun Mehta.

NSO Showcase — Music Con Passione Wednesday, November 3 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA

Classical WETA 90.9 FM
n the night of the National Symphony Orchestra’s Season Opening Gala, Maestro Gianandrea Noseda greeted the audience from the Concert Hall stage by riffing on the word compassion. “Life is a journey,” he said “and it should be lived with compassion and con passione — with passion.” Classical WETA’s NSO Showcase reflects this passionate musical journey in its November 3 broadcast. For example, when British-African composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, whose 4 Noveletten are featured on the program, was warned of discrimination before traveling to the U.S., he wrote a friend, “As for prejudice, I am well prepared for it. Surely [it] will not quite kill me...I am a great believer in my race, and I never lose an opportunity of letting my white friends here know it.” And how about Louise Farrenc, whose career defied the patriarchy? As the only woman to teach at the Paris Conservatory during the entire 19th century, she demanded and received equal pay with her male colleagues. Her Symphony No.3 is a tour de force that transcends gender. We’ll also hear: Mozart’s exuberant Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Haydn’s Miracle Symphony, so nicknamed when Haydn’s fans rushed the stage in Hanover Square, thus escaping being smashed by a falling chandelier. American composer George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, an homage to his grandmother who had suffered the ravages of slavery. Richard Strauss’ Duet Concertino, which tells the story of Beauty and the Beast just two years after the end of World War II and its beastly horrors. NSO Showcase airs on the first Wednesday of the month on Classical WETA; stream on classicalweta.org.
