EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

ELOISE BREIKJERN All this in 221 days. In these 221 days, I have been reflecting on how FMCT has brought joy to so many, how it has healed people and how it has created new friendships. People who have never acted or have not been on stage since high school find renewed self-confidence and a family of supportive individuals in their fellow actors. In our abbreviated 2020 season, over 160 individuals worked their full-time jobs before coming to the theatre to spend their evenings rehearsing a show for their community. The production staff, costume and lighting designers, directors, musicians, and choreographers who bring our shows to life are all waiting to once again share their creative skills at FMCT. I have often thought of the children who come to the theatre and are quiet and shy, or maybe they have more energy than most adults can manage. At the theatre, they meet other children with whom they can create stories and act out those stories, giving them confidence to know they can do anything. I have often thought of the 15,255 patrons who attend shows at FMCT. Some come alone, some bring friends, but they all share the experience of live theatre. This experience cannot be matched by any television show or movie. This is live, it’s happening in front of you, and you are sharing your laughs and tears with everyone else in the audience.

As of July 24, Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre’s doors have been closed for 221 days. For seven months, our building has been silent. During this time, the staff has moved offices twice. COVID-19 hit, creating a new normal for everyone. Performances have been canceled, the Black Live Matter movement has come to Fargo, and costumes, archives, props, and shop materials all moved out of the theatre and placed in storage.

FMCT is about people. People sharing an experience, whether they are on stage or in the audience. I miss this shared experience. The FMCT building is silent and our board and staff are ready to bring it back to life. You, our actors, patrons, and community members, can help by joining us in the renovation of FMCT. Repairing and renovating our 52-year-old theater comes at a cost and we need your financial assistance. Whether you make a one-time contribution or set up monthly gifts, donations of all sizes are welcome as we renovate and renew our facility. If you appreciate or love coming to FMCT, please go directly to our website and give from your heart as we work to restore the facility we love.

A brief history of

FARGO/MOORHEAD COMMUNITY THEATRE 1946 FMCT was founded in the spring of 1946. The first production was My Sister Eileen.

For the next two decades, productions were held in the Fargo Arena, a church, school auditoriums, the Fargo auditorium, service clubs and Red River Playhouse, a former vaudeville theatre.

1950 Peter Schickele (a.k.a. PDQ Bach)—international

composer, musician, author and satirist—performed in his first production at FMCT. He and his family continued to be active at the theatre throughout the decade.

1963 Dustin Hoffman directed two productions in the spring of 1963. The productions were not held in the current facility.

Plans were announced to build a theatre. The Fargo Park Board was approached by FMCT Board President George Nassif for the Island Park site.

1967 The FMCT building officially opens. The theatre was

largely built with donated materials and labor as spearheaded by Wayne “Doc” Candor. Generous financial contributions were made by the Herbst family, along with many other community members to complete this community-focused project.

1980 Prairie Theatre Academy was founded by Anne

1994 An expansion project added a gazebo, classroom,

women’s restroom, and kitchen. Additional projects were completed in the auditorium as well. FMCT paid for all of its construction for these projects.

2000 The STAR Program began working with various social

service agencies to distribute tickets for preview performances to individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend the shows. FMCT introduced Audio Description Performances, in which a narrator describes the visual elements of a production to patrons who are blind or who have low vision. FMCT was the first nonprofit arts organization to own and utilize Audio Description equipment in the area. FMCT also has Assisted Listening devices for those with hearing difficulties. In December the legal name of the organization was changed to Northern Prairie Performing Arts.

2011 FMCT received the largest monetary gift in its history.

Through this donation the gazebo was enclosed, offering additional space for events, creating a more efficient box office area as well as updating the lobby area.

2012 The Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Pavilion was dedicated

and FMCT now has a beautiful entrance to the facility. VanderMaten. This program introduced school-aged children to the world of performing arts. This special show gave access to children and Youth Conservatory Classes. adults on the autism spectrum with considerations made for lights, sound, facility, and person-to-person interactions. This 1981 NBC comes to Fargo to feature FMCT as one of the first initiative marked a first in our regional arts scene. in the area to open charitable gaming sites to support their nonprofit operations. FMCT opens a satellite space at 6 Broadway in Fargo. Named STUDIO 6, the space is first utilized for an expanded summer 1991 Silver Follies was created. This program supports theatre education program comprised of production and creative camps productions with a cast aged 55+ and remains the single largest for ages 5-18. The space will serve FMCT’s growing education avenue for the expression of performing art by seniors in this programs and provide a secondary rehearsal space as well. region.

2019 The Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre is driven by its mission of “enriching our greater community through engaging

theatrical and educational opportunities.” This mission is realized through our primary goals: to create meaningful artistic opportunities on and off the stage at the highest quality possible, to produce plays and musicals that entice volunteers and patrons to participate in our organization, and to create programing for the youth and senior citizens of our community through educational classes, outreach, and/or performances. In the aftermath of the structural damage to our facility that occurred in December 2019, FMCT is taking the opportunity to reassess our facility to best meet the demands of a growing community. The staff and board of directors are working diligently to put repair plans in place as quickly as possible and to strengthen our position to create exceptional artistic experiences for many more seasons to come.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

ADAM PANKOW Conversation and creation. Each can inspire the other. For this summer, creation was only made feasible because of conversation. Research lead to brainstorming and brainstorming sparked innovation by our entire staff. Schedules, format, venues, and methods were all adapted from original plans. FMCT education participants, staff, and our cast/crew of HAIRSPRAY further added to the dialogue with suggestions on how to safely offer artistic opportunity in a volatile time. Without these conversations, this summer of creation would have never been possible. Conversation has brought about creation this year, but creation has also served as a catalyst for conversation. Putting a show together in only a month can find energies focused on simply putting all the pieces together to create a dynamic show. Putting together HAIRSPRAY necessitates going beyond the script’s minimum requirements of the page. The themes of the show demand conversation. Through a series of discussions (first with our POC cast members, and later with our full company) experiences were shared and perspectives were considered as we worked towards a greater understanding of all sides. Considering the conversation about race in our country has been going on for centuries, what our cast shared and heard was a small moment in the scheme of it all. However, it was certainly impactful for the 33 young people sitting together and learning from each other. We all have much to gain from asking difficult questions and stopping to sincerely listen to the answers.

significance; however, when used in tandem, they can be an enlightening and powerful combination. This combo has made for an extraordinary season in a most challenging year.

I am thankful for a summer of conversation and creation. Each singular action by itself has Adam Pankow July 23, 2020

Biographies DESIREA BARZEY

(Cindy Watkins) is making her FMCT debut and she can’t wait for more future shows. Her past credits include Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem For Colored Girls at MSUM as well as stage managing Charlotte’s Web and Women of Troy also at MSUM. Being a part of this production is very important to Desirea. Not only has this musical been one of her favorites growing up, it also showcases important topics needed to be talked about. This show focuses on issues that are as prevalent as in the 1960’s as it is in 2020. Issues such as racism, discrimination, and fat shaming. Desirea hopes that this show can help shed some light on society today as well as tell a fun and important story for the audience. Desirea is excited to show how much this cast has accomplished in these past four weeks together.

JJ DANIELS

(Edna Turnblad) has been seen in FMCT’s productions Jesus Christ Superstar as Caiaphas and in the ensemble of Sweeney Todd but has also performed at Trollwood and Moorhead High School. JJ is currently auditioning as a voice actor and is working on building up his portfolio through online projects and local gigs before moving on to more large-scale projects. As soon as Hairspray was announced JJ knew he wanted to at least get the chance to audition for Edna, so playing her is like a little dream come true for him. “Edna being a very traditional woman played by a very non-traditional actor is interesting. It makes her all

the more real and getting to embody a truly feminine woman with a bit of a rough edge has been very fun!”

KRISTINA ERICKSON

(Amber Von Tussle) has dreamed of being in Hairspray for as long as she can remember. She is thrilled to be part of this production as Amber Von Tussle. Kristina graduated from MSUM in May with an Elementary Inclusive Education degree. She most recently appeared in Annie, Disaster, and Reefer Madness at MSUM.

LEXI FRANCIS

(Motormouth Maybelle) returns for her second show at FMCT, and her fourth show with the lovely production team. She will be playing Motormouth Maybelle and could not be more honored to be playing this beautiful, black and bold woman. She hopes y’all take some of the messages from this show and reflect on them. Not only for yourself, but for your community at large. Love on each other. #BLM

BRIAN HOFFMAN

(Duane) is in his fourth show with FMCT and after previously participating in Peter and the Starcatcher,

Dial M for Murder, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He has been doing theatre for five years throughout many different programs. Brian lives in Chicago, IL working three full time jobs, previously working on voice acting and voice over work with an agent traveling to different states. He plans to make a name for himself in Chicago by street performing, singing, dancing, VO, and songwriting before moving to Arizona and doing more of what he’s passionate about.

MARLY HOLMQUIST

(Denizen of Baltimore) is a sophomore at North Dakota State University (NDSU) studying Music, Theatre, and Communications. You may have previously seen her as Rapunzel in NDSU’s production of Into the Woods this past spring or in the Chorus of NDSU’s production of Julius Caesar this past fall. Marly was also an intern assistant director this year with FMCT’s K-2 Little Mermaid and 2-4 The Addams Family along with being an online music director for 5-8 The Addams Family. She could not be more excited for this show and her role. “It’s different than any other role I’ve had. I get to have four different personalities throughout the show, and each one is incredibly unique”

WREN JAMES

(Little Inez) is SO excited to play the part of Little Inez and is honored to be a part of this important production! Wren will be an 8th grader at Carl Ben Eielson this Fall. She enjoys singing in her school choirs and was chosen to represent her school as part of the ND Middle School All State Choir during her 7th grade year. When she is not singing, Wren can be found running as a member of the Fargo South Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. Wren lives in Fargo with her parents, four dogs, and tortoise. This is her second performance with FMCT. Wren would like to thank Judy, Adam, the entire cast and crew of Hairspray, and of course her

parents, who have helped and supported her through everything.

EMILY KAUTZ

(Penny Pingleton) is in her fourth year in college at MSUMoorhead. Since transferring to MSUM in the Fall of 2018, Emily has learned and experimented with various types of acting styles and techniques including Michael Chekov work. At MSUM, she has played Mimsey in Plaza Suite, a chorus member in Women of Troy, and an ensemble member for Reefer Madness, Disaster!, and Annie. Emily began to take an interest in theatre in high school, where she was able to play some classic lead roles such as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and Nelly in South Pacific. She was also involved with many of the art programs in her small high school such as band, choir, speech, theatre, and one act.
