Director’s Message

Via … in Latin it is the noun for “road” or “path.” In modern English, via functions mainly as a preposition, meaning “by way of” (think “road” again) but also “by means of” (a channel, medium, or process by which something happens). It’s the latter sense, perhaps more than any other, that evokes ideas of agency and impetus. As with every year, the Wexner Center’s 2013–14 season saw hundreds of lively programs, unique partnerships, and memorable events come to pass—both by way of and by means of—the Wex. But the culmination of our Via Brasil programs this year made it the perfect word to adopt for this annual report in particular. Over the last 12 months the Wexner Center has forged new alliances, further weaving our programs into the cultural fabric of Columbus while further advancing our role as creative conduit and catalyst. Our regional premiere of Lee Daniels’ The Butler celebrated this moving drama—inspired by the story of Eugene Allen, an African American butler who served eight presidents—and Wil Haygood, the Columbus native and nationally recognized journalist who brought Allen’s story to popular attention through a front-page article in the Washington Post. The center partnered with Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman at this sold-out event honoring Haygood, who grew up in the University District neighborhood of Weinland Park and cut his teeth at the Columbus Call & Post. Then nearly a year later, Haygood again partnered with the center, this time by contributing to a truly unprecedented project that came to fruition in June, the Weinland Park Story Book. Wexner Center educators (and notably Jean Pitman, educator for youth programs) worked with dozens of teen interns over two-plus years to interview more than one hundred residents of this Columbus community in transition. With the talent of more than 40 local artists that included Weinland Park youth, area artist Julian Dassai, and acclaimed comics artist Sandy Plunkett, a selection of these stories were illustrated and collected into a limited-edition

graphic anthology. Made possible with lead support from Cardinal Health Foundation, the project was the result of sustained collaborations with the Weinland Park Community Civic Association and other neighborhood social service agencies. The project also marked the center’s first foray into crowdfunding. Nearly 50 donors contributed to the GCAC power2give campaign for the book, and matching funds were generously provided by The Columbus Foundation, whose own investment in Weinland Park is making a visible difference. Last fall, the center served as the only Midwest venue for Blues for Smoke, an ambitious exhibition that explored a wide range of contemporary visual and media art through the lens of the blues and related musical forms, as well as through the aura of a “blues aesthetic.” Riffing off the exhibition’s crossdisciplinary approach, the Wex complemented the gallery presentation with several related screenings and performances. The exhibition inspired our firstever invitation to Columbus Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director Byron Stripling and his quartet, and their performance provided the platform for a lively night of music, mingling, and musing about the exhibition for members of the center’s Shumate Advisory Council, United Way of Central Ohio’s Key Club, and their guests. Later in the fall, we presented several performances of Arguendo, a play by New York–based ensemble Elevator Repair Service that wittily dramatizes a 1991 First Amendment Supreme Court case. Co-commissioned by the Wex and sponsored here in part by Puffin Foundation West, the production was presented in conjunction with Ohio State’s COMPAS (Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) program and offered food for thought for select students participating in the university’s First Year Experience Program, who were offered free admission. Each performance of Arguendo was capped by engaging post-performance talks with Moritz College of Law professors and Ohio State legal professionals. Once again, a highly original and compelling work of art was the spark for timely dialogue—in this case, about our constitutional right to free expression, even (and perhaps especially) when taken to extremes. Continually looking for ways to bridge the divide between athletics and aesthetics, the center expanded upon its perennially popular Rare Baseball and Football Films with an evening of

Award-winning writer and Columbus native Wil Haygood, Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman, and Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin at the area premiere screening of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, at AMC Easton Town Center on August 14. This screening was the first in a series of sold-out area premieres presented by the Wexner Center this year.

Rare Basketball Films. Each program featured historic newsreels as well as in-person cameos from former Buckeyes and NFL and NBA pros. With help from Ohio State’s Alumni Association and Department of Athletics, we held a tailgate party before the football program that gathered Buckeyes young and old for food, drink, and fight songs from the Ohio State Pep Band. Currently on a six-city tour of the US, and introduced at some venues by our Director of Film/Video Dave Filipi, this year’s baseball program screened unearthed clips of the notoriously “fixed” 1919 World Series, perhaps the only remaining from that game. (As a side note, I’m not using the word “unearthed” lightly. The film reels were literally dug out of the Canadian permafrost—as the Columbus Dispatch put it in a story picked up nationally, the “cinematic version of buried treasure.”) Measured by the number of artists presented in the galleries, on stage, and on screen—not to mention the total miles logged over the course of the project—the signature programs of 2013–14

would without dispute be those presented under the banner of Via Brasil, the center’s multidisciplinary initiative focusing on contemporary art and culture in Brazil. Planning began four years ago with an invitation from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to propose an ambitious project to advance the center’s curatorial and educational expertise while expanding the institution’s impact on the university. Our proposal was awarded a remarkable grant of $782,000, the largest single program grant in center’s history. From the beginning Via Brasil was conceived as a collaborative endeavor, designed in part to leverage expertise across multiple Ohio State departments and enhance the university’s reach across the globe, even as it allowed for fresh cultural research by Wex curators. After convening colleagues from across campus—including partners in Ohio State’s Center for Latin American Studies and Office of International Affairs, who were about to open another of the university’s Global Gateway offices in São Paulo—and

after consulting with knowledgeable peers in Brazil’s cultural and educational spheres, Wexner Center curators conducted three years of in-country, onthe-ground research. They traveled not only to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, but also to Recife and Belo Horizonte to meet with the country’s most gifted young and midcareer artists, as well as curators, gallerists, and other arts figures. Though a handful of Via Brasil screenings and filmmaker visits began in late 2012, as you’ll see in the pages that follow, the initiative reached a crescendo in early 2014. In late January, we celebrated the opening of Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil, which filled the entirety of our galleries with work by 35 artists and artistic teams, some exhibiting in this country for the first time. In the same month we launched Cruzamentos: Contemporary Brazilian Documentary, a series spanning 24 feature-length films and 15 shorts. And in the spirit of “via Wex,” this unprecedented film series will now travel to UCLA, the National Gallery in DC, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center in NY. We also presented performances from leading Brazilian dance company Companhia Urbana de Dança and talents representative of the country’s diverse music scene, as well as enriching artist talks, gallery tours, and a symposium where artists, filmmakers, scholars, and curators came together to explore Brazil’s explosive creative ecology. A dedicated Via Brasil website complemented the entire endeavor, reaching beyond the arts to encompass politics, socioeconomics, street life, and food, among other topics. In some respects Via Brasil served as a microcosm of what’s possible “by means of” the Wex when we vigorously pursue our mission on behalf of artists and audiences. Indeed, every aspect of that mission—to serve as Ohio State’s multidisciplinary, international laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art—was activated through Via Brasil. In fact, artist-in-residence Lucia Koch literally and metaphorically transformed the very experience and perception of our building’s unique structural design. Appropriately, we chose to feature her project on the cover of this publication. At the same time that artists were encouraged to creatively stretch, so too key members of our curatorial staff found themselves inhabiting new roles in order to realize the exhibition to its fullest. In particular, Jennifer Lange, curator of our Film/Video

Studio Program, gets high marks for flexing new muscles in her mastery of exhibition making, as does Film/Video Associate Curator Chris Stults for aiding and abetting that effort even as he assembled the impressive Cruzamentos film series. And of course, it was beyond gratifying to see it all come to fruition as we welcomed nearly 1,400 guests to the opening of the exhibition—including the Honorable Mauro Vieira, Ambassador of Brazil to the US, and incoming Ohio State president Michael V. Drake, MD. We at the Wex have marked several notable milestones this past year. On a personal note, the season marked my 20th year as director of this remarkable institution, an occasion made sweeter and more humbling by receiving two very special honors. First, the announcement by Abigail Wexner on behalf of center’s trustees that a supremely generous Innovation Fund had been created in my name, and later, news that I had been selected to receive one of this year’s Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio. It was a fulfilling year to be sure, and a full one, as you can see on the pages that follow. But even as you enjoy these pictorial mementos, the entire board and staff of the center are immersed in preparation for our 25th Anniversary Season, with an extraordinary slate of programs and events including, as you have may have heard, a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of the Wexner Family Collection. As invigorating and gratifying as this past year has been, I assure you that the year to come will be like none other in the center’s history. I hope you’ll be there to celebrate along with us.

Via Brasil is the Wexner Center’s multidisciplinary initiative focusing on contemporary art and culture in Brazil, made possible by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

“Via Brasil is an ambitious, innovative, and above all, courageous project that, through art, contributes to a greater understanding of my country in the United States.” —H IS EXCELLENCY MAURO VIEIRA, THE AMBASSADOR OF BRAZIL TO THE UNITED STATES, SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF THE CRUZAMENTOS EXHIBITION

Brazilian artist Marilá Dardot’s A origem da obra de arte (The Origin of the Work of Art, 2002/2011) overlooks the stunning Minas Gerais landscape at Centro de Arte Contemporânea Inhotim in Brumadinho, Brazil. Our curators took multiple trips to Brazil to conduct research for the show, meet with artists and fellow curators and visit galleries and museums. Left to right: Jennifer Lange and artist Tatiana Blass in Blass’s studio in São Paulo; Chris Stults, artist Tiago Mata Machado, curator Eduardo de Jesus, and artist Cinthia Marcelle in Belo Horizonte, Brazil; artist Rosângela Rennó, Jennifer Lange, and Bill Horrigan in Rio de Janeiro.

Via Brasil and its programming engaged a myriad of people from around the Wexner Center, the Ohio State campus, and in Brazil, including Paulo Venancio Filho, based in Rio de Janeiro, who co-curated the exhibition Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil. In fact, the Wex engaged internal (to Ohio State) and external advisory councils along the way. Among the figures working on this multiyear initiative (and who were interviewed in a Via Brasil video) are those pictured and identified here.

“Starting Feb. 1, entering the Wexner Center will be akin to getting a new stamp in your passport.” —COLUMBUS MONTHLY

Artist Residency Award recipient Lucia Koch, based in São Paulo, installed her work Mirrorama (2014) in the lobbies and café area to engage visitors even further with the architecture. “I want to remove people from the ordinary experience with a place,” she told WOSU TV’s arts and culture show Broad & High.

“It’s an event, an environment…. Start seeing it now.” —STARR REVIEW ON CRUZAMENTOS: CONTEMPORARY ART IN BRAZIL

The Cruzamentos opening in January drew 1,400 visitors, including Wexner Center Artist Residency Award recipient Jonathas de Andrade (far left), from Recife, Brazil, who created a multimedia installation especially for the show, pictured

with Leah and João Simões (of Davenport Aviation); and Mauro Vieira, the Brazilian Ambassador to the US, shown below with Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin. Works by Cao Guimarães (above) and Tatiana Blass (inset left) are pictured here.

“Their abilities are in evidence right away as they effortlessly run, jump and execute traditional hip-hop moves, including spins and handstands. One dancer seems to bounce off the shoulders of others around him, his fleet footwork unencumbered by the sneakers worn by all.” —COLUMBUS DISPATCH ON COMPANHIA URBANA DE DANÇA

Via Brasil spread to all corners of the center, and beyond. Pictured here are (top left) legendary guitarist Gary Lucas, who performed an original score during the screening of the 1967 Brazilian cult horror classic Esta noite encarnarei no teu cadáver (This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse) by José Mojica Marins, popularly known as Coffin Joe; Companhia Urbana de Dança from Rio leading a masterclass in Ohio State’s Department of Dance; the company (also pictured below) performed to a sold-out crowd at downtown’s Capitol Theatre.

The film component of Via Brasil was rich and varied. Brazilian works screened in The Box video space (shown above, from left, works by Rodrigo Braga and Lucia Koch; both artists also had work in the Cruzamentos exhibition). The Cruzamentos: Contemporary Brazilian Documentary series, now traveling coast to coast, was accompanied by a brochure featuring essays by its curator, the Wexner Center’s Chris Stults, and Brazilian scholar Fernão Pessoa Ramos. At far right, an image from Like Water through Stone (A falta que me faz, 2009) from director Marília Rocha. Below, an image from Playing (Jogo de cena, 2007) by Brazilian director Eduardo Coutinho, who died two months before the screening; we also showed two of his other films as part of the series. Stults wrote in a tribute on our blog that Coutinho’s “seeking approach” to filmmaking “inspired our approach to Cruzamentos.”

Via Brasil programs welcomed artists and curators, families and students, and even foreign dignitaries. Curators and artists gathered for a two-day Cruzamentos symposium in March (opposite page top), including artist Cao Guimarães and Wex curator Chris Stults (inset left). Ambassador Mauro Vieira met with Ohio State students during his visit. Visitors at the opening of the Cruzamentos exhibition explored Jonathas de Andrade’s installation O que sobrou da 1a

Corrida de Carroças do Centro do Recife (What’s Left of the 1st Horse Cart Race of Downtown Recife, 2012–14), created with the support of a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award (lower left); co-curators Paulo Venancio Filho and Bill Horrigan and artists Luiza Baldan and Lucia Koch enjoyed the exhibition opening. Visitors to the free Super Sunday: Olá Brasil! community day (below) participated in activities that drew from themes and techniques featured in the Cruzamentos exhibition.

The multifaceted, multilayered Via Brasil web site (www.wexarts.org/ viabrasil), produced in-house, offered video, images, information, cultural tidbits, news from Brazil—and even the weather in Rio. With almost 15,000 unique page views by nearly 5,000 people from around the globe, it continues to serve as an archive of the activities from the last few years. At left, the Cruzamentos exhibition catalogue features essays (appearing both in English and Portuguese) by curators Paulo Venancio Filho, Jennifer Lange, Bill Horrigan, and Chris Stults, as well as by Cristiana Tejo, independent Brazilian curator and former director of Museu de Arte Moderna Aloíso Magalhães in Recife.

Media from New York to São Paulo covered Via Brasil. ARTnews magazine included it in a selection of “12 Trends Defining This Season’s Art-Museum Shows” (one of which was a focus on Latin America). Artforum previewed and reviewed the show, and also ran a feature written by the Wex’s Chris Stults on film great Eduardo Coutinho. Locally, the initiative and exhibition was hailed by a range of local media.

Exceptional Artistry

Blues for Smoke, a touring exhibition that made its only Midwestern stop here—after runs at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York—brought in a diverse mix of visitors attracted to its range of artists (from Romare Bearden to Richard Pryor), its music connections (the show included audio and video stations), and elaborate installations, including David Hammons’s Chasing the Blue Train (1989). The installation’s title and components (a blue toy train, piles of coal) wittily allude to saxophone player John Coltrane and his celebrated career. Columbus Free Press noted the JeanMichel Basquiat piece and its “celebrity appearance here in the C-O.”

The Wexner Center is the region’s leading destination for contemporary art and a conduit for bringing world-class visual art, film, dance, theater, and music to Columbus.

Attendees at this year’ event included Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dan Good (pictured at left, in tie and glasses) and composer and participating artist Mark Lomax (inset, center). As it has every year, the center publishes a book featuring the students’ writings and artwork.

Over the past two years, the Wexner Center worked with almost 40 artists, a group of teens, and multiple neighborhood organizations to create the Weinland Park Story Book. Led by Wex educator Jean Pitman (pictured above, far left) and local artist Julian Dassai (with sunglasses), this limited-edition graphic anthology documenting the people, culture, and history of the diverse, historically underserved,

rapidly changing University District neighborhood was a grassroots effort, celebrated with a book launch at Godman Guild in Weinland Park. Among the project's participants: Amin Ebady, Josiah Clements, and DeRico Hatcher (at right); artist Bryan Moss (below); and teen artist Jasmine McCloskey (bottom), shown with her mother, Rachel McCloskey, and local artist Mary Jo Bole at the book launch.

“That’s what art does: It captures a certain stage in life or a moment of life, and it enlightens people to what’s going on. It’s the same as why we write history books. So we remember what times were like, learn from them, and improve them.” –JOSIAH CLEMENTS, ON THE WEINL AND PARK STORY BOOK

Outreach and Engagement

The exhibition Blues for Smoke offered many opportunities to engage the community. Educator Dionne Custer Edwards (above, at left) led a tour during an evening that welcomed United Way’s Key Club and the Wexner Center’s Shumate Council, and that also included two sold-out shows by Columbus Jazz Orchestra leader Byron Stripling and his quartet. Stripling (pictured far right) delivered remarks at the reception, which was attended by United Way’s Janet Jackson and Donor Circles member Larry James (pictured at right with Wex Director Sherri Geldin).

More than ever the Wex serves as cultural and civic hub, welcoming all audiences and communities with programs that provoke discussion, encourage debate, and spur engagement with today’s pressing issues.

“The Wexner Center for the Arts serves as an important portal to the university, with a presence and impact felt the world over.” —LESLIE WEXNER, CHAIRMAN OF THE WEXNER CENTER FOUNDATION AND CHAIRMAN/CEO OF L BRANDS

Our popular, free Wex Drive-in series opened in June with Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket (at top); over 800 people came to watch the movie under the stars. Screenwriter Steven Conrad discussed The Secret Life of Walter Mitty after the the film’s area premiere, which was cosponsored by Thurber House (Conrad appears with Thurber House’s Alison Barret and Wexner Center’s David Filipi at left).
