LA DOLCE VITA ORIENT EXPRESS

Wexas Italy expert Charlie Pritchard shares the lowdown on Italy’s newest luxury train.

Almost 140 years ago, Georges Nagelmackers realised a lifelong dream by launching the first luxury Orient Express trains, which ran throughout Europe and as far east as Istanbul. Fast forward to 2024 and the legend has been reborn again.

Now open for departures in 2025, La Dolce Vita Orient Express is primed to bring a splash of luxury to Italy’s most beautiful rail routes. Owned and run by the original Orient Express brand, the train will take in destinations across the country, including the likes of Rome, Portofino, Matera, Venice and Sicily.

This iteration of the Orient Express, however, will steer away from the 1920s Art Deco glamour of its famous namesake, instead taking design inspiration from the contemporary creativity of 1960s and 1970s Italy.

ROME, MATERA & POLENA

Travel in style as you discover little-known Palena, ancient Matera and the Eternal City of Rome on Europe’s latest ultra-luxury train – La Dolce Vita Orient Express. You’ll also enjoy two nights of luxury in the Italian capital.

Complementing the train’s accommodations will be dining of the very highest quality, with ‘made-in-Italy’ menus created in collaboration with some of Europe’s finest chefs and paired with only the best sommelierpicked Italian wines. ALL ABOARD THE GOLDEN EAGLE

A legend among rail journeys, the Golden Eagle explores the spectacular scenery, historic cities and fascinating cultures of a vast region stretching right across Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and beyond.

Life onboard

Everything about this train screams old-world luxury. It all begins as you step onboard to be greeted with the soothing sounds of the train’s resident pianist and a glass of vintage champagne, served among the dark-wood grandeur of the bar car – also the venue for afternoon teas and expert lectures.

The restaurant carriage is equally delightful, with fullboard menus catering to guests throughout the day. The made-to-order breakfasts are a particular standout, featuring the likes of cheese, salmon, salads, yoghurt, freshly squeezed orange juice and excellent omelettes. Lunches are light and tasty – usually a choice of starters with a sandwich or soup followed by dessert – while dinner menus include plenty of local options, with ingredients sourced from the destinations along the route. It’s all washed down with complimentary drinks, including a superb selection of wines, beers and spirits, as standard.

Come the evening, you’ll retire to your cosy en-suite cabin, where sofas designed for daytime relaxation convert to both an upper berth and a small double bed. And, while all feature LCD screens and a 24-hour service from personal attendants, upgrades mix in extra space, underfloor heating and drinks at the bar included in the price. The wood-panelled Imperial Suites with their kingsized beds and fully stocked complimentary bar are a special highlight.

SWITZERLAND BY RAIL

Spectacular train journeys in the heart of alpine Europe.

The beauty of Switzerland’s landscapes is almost unmatched anywhere else on Earth. Great peaks stand sentinel over alpine meadows as rivers flow along pretty, pine-clad valleys dotted with tiny, chocolate-box villages. The country’s towns and cities, too, are hard to beat, from the medieval sights of central Zurich to lakeside Lugano, glamorous St Moritz and Zermatt in the shadow of the Matterhorn.

Of course, there are plenty of hidden gems, too, such as Interlaken, idyllically located between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and tiny Lauterbrunnen with its glorious backdrop of rocky cliffs and the 300 metre-high Staubbach Falls. And, if you’re looking for views, don’t miss the 2,970-metre Schilthorn. Reached by a half-hour cable car ride from the Lauterbrunnen Valley, this epic viewpoint was made famous as a location in the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and offers views of the emblematic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.

But, how best to take it all in? For us, it has to be on Switzerland’s extensive and spectacular rail network, with tracks and trains connecting cities, towns and villages right across the Alps.

Glacier Express

This iconic train takes in some of the most spectacular scenery Switzerland has to offer on an eight-hour journey which passes through 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges. Highlights include the Oberalp Pass – the highest point on the line at 2,033 metres – the Rhine Gorge,

with its sheer cliffs and dramatic rock formations, and the Landwasser Viaduct, an imposing, 65-metre-high viaduct, which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway line. The journey is also narrated, offering a fascinating insight into the line’s construction.

Bernina Express

The narrow-gauge Bernina Express, which starts at St.Moritz, is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Switzerland. Climbing over the spectacular Bernina Pass to more than 2,253 metres above sea level, it takes in views of the Bernina massif and the mighty Morteratsch glacier en route to Poschiavo – a three-and-a-half-hour journey to savour.

GoldenPass Express

This route brings you past Lake Thun and the village of Zweisimmen, reaching Gstaad before continuing through the wild and romantic Pays d’Enhaut, with scenic villages along the shore of Lake Geneva. Finally, you’ll descend to Montreux on a dramatic, sinuous track that offers wonderful views of the lake and valley.

Gotthard Panorama Express

The Gotthard Panorama Express travels from Lugano on the Italian border, north into the traditional heart of alpine Switzerland. It’s another awe-inspiring route, as you take in Rütli Meadow above Lake Lucerne, picturesque Schillerstein with its giant boulders and plunging waterfalls, and the 19th -century Tell’s chapel, adorned with four magnificent frescoes by the Basel artist Ernst Stückelberg.

JAPAN BY TRAIN

In Japan, rail travel makes for a scenic and simple way to explore the country, and all the islands are well served by good-quality, high-speed and local trains. You’ll be able to relax in your well-appointed seat and enjoy a high standard of onboard meals, all coupled with excellent service and unrivalled punctuality.

Bullet Trains

Snaking through Japan at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour, the Japanese Shinkansen, or bullet train, is the quickest and most efficient way to travel the country. Indeed, its punctuality is world renowned, and a delay of just five minutes results in passengers being given a ‘delay certificate’ by way of an apology. Imagine that on our own rail network. Inside the trains, you’ll find spacious, comfortable and wonderfully quiet carriages (no intrusive phone calls here), where you can sit back in your reclining seat and watch the cities and countryside glide effortlessly by.

Japan Rail Pass

Linking the main islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Hokkaido, train travel is popular for a reason – and a Japan Rail Pass gives you unlimited use of almost the entire Shinkansen and local rail network. At Wexas, we’ll be happy to help you plan your itinerary from start to finish, or walk you through the steps of reserving seats and tell you which trains we recommend, giving

you the confidence to explore this incredible destination independently. To get you started, I’ve picked out my favourite Japan itinerary below, linking cities, countryside and culture with expert-led tours and, of course, those all-important bullet train journeys.

ROAD TRIPS

If exploring with freedom is high on your list of holiday must-haves, then a road trip could well be the answer. Of course, you’ll likely have a route in mind, and you’ll want to book your accommodation well in advance, but once you’re in your chosen destination, a car gives you all the flexibility you need to make your holiday your own.

In this section we celebrate life on the open road with a curated selection of journeys to countries where the car is king, from Californian classics to South Africa’s magnificent Garden Route. And, we drive a little off the beaten track, as we explore the gastronomic delights of Finland’s Lake Saimaa and get to grips with the best of Canada’s Yukon. Plus, you’ll find the opinions of our experts who bring you their top self-drives from Spain and Portugal, and report back from a recent tour of Sicily.

ON THE ROAD: SICILY

The arrival into Sicily’s capital is a splendid one, with the transfer to Palermo a summary of the island’s natural geography – rolling hills and mountain peaks in one direction, and a shimmering, glittering sea in the other. By contrast, the city itself was all chaotic bustle, a reflection of urban Sicily on a wider scale, a place awash with the myriad cultures and influences which have shaped the island’s fortunes over centuries.

In Palermo, these wide ranging influences are perhaps most pronounced, with Norman, Islamic and Baroque architecture blending together to create a rich tapestry that can be enjoyed along every street, lane and cobbled alley. And, while you won’t need long here – a couple of nights should do – it’s certainly worth working a stay into your itinerary if only to explore the grand, GothicCatalan style cathedral and imposing Norman Palace.

Next was a scenic, 50-minute train journey along the coast to seaside Cefalù. Its delightful public beach, winding promenade and pretty piazzas are all typically photogenic, while the imposing Norman bell tower and the towering, 270-metre-high rock around which the town is built contrast beautifully with the calm sea and coastline beyond. It really is the stuff of postcards.

Of course, as with any holiday, you’ll want to break up your sightseeing with a spot of out-and-out relaxation. For this purpose, my hotel in Cefalù – the excellent, family-run Le Callette No.5 – was just the ticket. From its inviting beach club with stylish seaside bar to the exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and acres of gardens and beachfront, it offers tranquillity and comfort in abundance. And, it’s all within touching distance of the historic centre.

After two nights in Cefalù I travelled south towards Agrigento and the similarly excellent Baglio Della Luna, where peaceful gardens, panoramic views and exceptional food and wine all make for a wonderful stay. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the nearby Valley of the Temples – an ensemble of grand Hellenic ruins surrounded by pretty almond trees.

The long drive towards Sicily’s east coast led us to a brief stop in Catania, the island’s second city. From the outskirts, it appears at first glance to provide the same sort of sensory overload as Palermo, but without the capital’s beauty and romanticism. How delighted I was, then, to discover the breathtaking Baroque centre, tucked away among the wider urban sprawl. Striking churches and towers, immaculate black-and-white piazzas and wide, leafy shopping avenues all provide a sense of sophistication and grandeur, making this a wonderful place to explore, all under the shadow of Mount Etna.

Our final destination was the enchanting Donna Carmella Resort & Lodges. It would be difficult to find anywhere on the island that better encapsulates Sicily’s unique charm and the range of experiences the island has to offer. Wine tasting, yoga, cookery and cocktailmaking classes, ambling strolls through vast botanical gardens, and even a hike up Mount Etna’s storied slopes are just some of the myriad options available. And it’s luxurious, too, with a wonderful spa and outdoor pool coupled with excellent food and wine and some seriously gorgeous rooms, many of which feature their very own private terrace with a plunge pool.

EXPERT’S TIP

“It’s important not to rush Sicily and, when planning, be sure not to cram too much in. Like a fine wine, it needs time to breathe, so pace your trip well and spend a worthwhile amount of time in each location. After all, it’s not far from the UK, so you can always come back, as I most certainly will”.

An 8-day Sicily self-drive starts from £1,490 pp incl. flights, UK airport lounge access, arrival transfer, 7 days car hire & 7 nights accommodation. For more information, visit wexas.com/103722

DISCOVER LAKE SAIMAA

In a country of 188,000 lakes, Lake Saimaa is Finland’s largest, with 14,500 kilometres of shoreline and around 14,000 islands dotted across its pristine waters. Wexas specialist Steff Sargeant explores its highlights.

European Region of Gastronomy 2024

Whether it’s crispy fried vendace, hearty Karelian pies, organic berry wines or mushrooms foraged from the forests, Lake Saimaa is awash with culinary delights, which can be sampled across an excellent array of eateries. To further confirm its culinary credentials, it’s also been named a European Region of Gastronomy 2024, in recognition of its diverse gastronomic landscape and collaboration between local producers.

An outdoor adventure haven

Throughout the summer months, Lake Saimaa bathes in endless daylight, as the region lends itself to exploration by hiking, cycling, wild camping and kayaking. In winter, it transforms into a paradise for ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. There’s always the option of an invigorating dip in the lake itself, with the warmth of a nearby sauna to retreat to.

The Saimaa Ringed Seal

Lake Saimaa is home to one of the world’s rarest seal species, the Saimaa Ringed Seal, which have been living in isolation from other seals since the end of the last Ice Age. With only 400 left in the wild, they’re notoriously elusive, but a boat tour with a local guide will give you the best chance of catching a glimpse.

Historic towns and cities

The great outdoors may be Lake Saimaa’s primary appeal, but its towns certainly shouldn’t be overlooked. Home to a majestic 15th-century castle, a bustling market square and an annual opera festival, Savonlinna is an unmissable highlight, while Lappeenranta and Mikkeli also make superb bases for exploring the region.

Unique hotels

There’s an extraordinary variety of charming places to stay throughout the region, catering to a wide range of tastes. Standout options include Tertti Manor, a beautifully renovated country estate with an awardwinning restaurant, and the luxurious, lakeside Elsanranta Villas at Sahanlahti Resort, each of which comes with its own private sauna and plunge pool.

An 8-day gastronomic self-drive in Lake Saimaa starts from £1,820 pp incl. flights, UK airport lounge access, car hire, 7 nights accommodation, selected meals & touring. For more information, visit wexas.com/184298

SECRETS OF THE GOLDEN STATE

When it comes to sheer variety, California is hard to match for a self-drive holiday. And, while the allure of the likes of Los Angeles and San Francisco is undeniable, the Golden State also cradles plenty of hidden gems, lesser-visited attractions and authentic locales that are just as delightful. From the drama of Yosemite National Park to the tranquillity of Palm Springs’ desert oasis, Wexas expert Hannah Ball has picked out six incredible locations to inspire your next USA holiday.

The hidden trails of Yosemite National Park

Shielded by the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite National Park is characterised by sheer granite cliffs, giant emerald-green valleys and magnificent waterfalls. And, while it’s one of America’s most-visited national parks, it still holds plenty of surprises for those willing to step a little off the beaten path. While many follow the leisurely Valley Loop Trail to take in the views from the valley floor, more adventurous souls might choose the trail to Half Dome, or the Mist Trail to Nevada Falls for the most impressive panoramas.

Death Valley – nature’s extreme

From vast salt flats to narrow canyons and vibrant mudstone hills, Death Valley is home to an overwhelming abundance of natural beauty. Though it’s known as one of the hottest places in the world and may seem inhospitable at first glance, it offers refuge to several desert-adapted species, such as coyotes, the greater roadrunner, jackrabbits and desert kit foxes. Venturing out into the isolated wild springs and creeks, you may even spot one of five types of critically endangered pupfish.

Monterey’s laid-back Californian charm

Just two hours south of San Francisco, Monterey enjoys an enviable location on California’s Central Coast. It also ties together some of the state’s best driving routes, from the short-but-sweet 17-Mile Drive to the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. In the town itself, the historic waterfront district of Cannery Row takes centre stage, with enticing seafood restaurants and charming boutiques, while the excellent Monterey Bay Aquarium showcases marine life on a truly grand scale.

The calm oasis of Palm Springs

Once a playground for Hollywood’s rich and famous, Palm Springs is now a fun, laid-back oasis of upscale resorts, golf courses, hot springs and mid-century architecture, all framed by the beautiful Coachella Valley. Wellness lovers can rely on an abundance of luxurious spas, fed by natural thermal mineral water, while outdoorsy types will delight in the region’s hiking trails, taking in the likes of the Indian Canyons with its tumbling streams and palm groves.

Spanish flavours in Santa Barbara Sandwiched between the Santa Ynez mountains and the sparkling Pacific Ocean, sleepy Santa Barbara is a favourite among in-the-know road-trippers for its distinctive Iberian soul. Indeed, everything from the red-tile clay roofs to the colonial architecture evoke the spirit of Spain. Along with some wonderful beaches, the “American Riviera” is the proud home of California’s oldest working wharf, as well as more than 20 tasting rooms in downtown alone, offering a walkable introduction to some of the county’s nearly 300 wineries.

Lake Tahoe – the gem of the Sierra Nevada Flung out on California’s border with Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a true year-round destination. Mild summers are perfect for hiking, mountain biking and enjoying the spectacular scenery along its glorious shoreline, while the thick snowfall of winter and early spring is ideal to hit one of the many ski resorts dotted around the lake. The northern shores offer sandy beaches, water sports and endless trekking opportunities, including delightfully scenic sections of the 170-kilometre-long Tahoe Rim Trail.

A 16-day Best of the West: California & Las Vegas holiday starts from £3,400 pp incl. flights, UK airport lounge access, 13 days car hire & 14 nights accommodation. For more information, visit wexas.com/184215

BEST OF THE YUKON

Wild and sparsely populated, the Yukon is home to some of Canada’s most extraordinary landscapes and remote communities. Encompassing the country’s northwestern corner along the border with Alaska, this is a land of soaring mountains, vast glaciers and emerald lakes. Here, we explore five of the territory’s most majestic sights.

Dawson City & Tr’ondëk-Klondike

Dawson City’s history may be inextricably tied to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896-1899, but the region has been inhabited for thousands of years by the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nations people. As of 2023, these ancestral lands have been granted UNESCO World Heritage status in recognition of the region’s unique cultural heritage.

Kluane National Park

Home to 17 of Canada’s 20 highest peaks, the world’s largest non-polar icefields and a rich array of wildlife, including bears, wolves and caribou, Kluane National Park is the Yukon at its most spectacular. There’s no better way to experience it than by taking to the skies on a thrilling flightseeing tour.

Tombstone Territorial Park

Just below the Arctic Circle, towards the southern end of the Dempster Highway, lies this jaw-dropping wilderness of jagged mountains, barren tundra, alpine meadows and boreal forest. It’s a paradise for hiking and camping in the Yukon backcountry – particularly in fall, when the landscape wears vivid shades of crimson and gold.

Northern Lights

Few places in the world offer better chances of seeing the Northern Lights than the Yukon, which lies directly beneath the auroral oval and has an abundance of dark sky spots with minimal light pollution. Consider basing yourself in the capital, Whitehorse, and planning adventures from there. September to early April is the prime window of opportunity for aurora hunting.

Southern Lakes & Yukon and White Pass Railway

Easily accessible from Whitehorse, this network of interconnected glacial lakes and rivers, dotted with indigenous communities, is among the most idyllic pockets of the Yukon. Winding through it aboard the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway between Skagway (Alaska) and Carcross (Canada) is a spellbinding experience.

An 11-day Yukon self-drive starts from £2,795 pp incl. flights, UK airport lounge access, 10 days car hire, 9 nights accommodation & admission to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. For more information, visit wexas.com/104118

bubbles. Continuing over the snow-laden wonderland, you’ll be whisked away to a high-alpine meadow for a snowshoeing trip to an icy waterfall. Once you’ve enjoyed your hot beverage in the wilderness, climb back aboard your helicopter for the return flight to the base.

CANADA’S BEST BEAR LODGES

From Vancouver Island to the icy wilds of Manitoba, Wexas expert Ben Harding casts his eye over a selection of Canada’s best bear-watching locations.

Canada’s vast wilderness encompasses a rich variety of habitats, from coastal rainforests to Arctic tundra. It’s within these majestic landscapes that you’ll find some of the world’s finest sites for watching bears in the wild.

And, while the giant grizzlies grab the headlines, there’s also the chance to spot several other species, including black bears, polar bears, and even the mysterious spirit bear, which can be found in a small region of British Columbia. But, with such huge habitats and a relatively sparse population, how do you go about tracking down these seemingly elusive mammals? Fortunately, a number of excellent lodges enjoy locations known for

their bear populations, with ranger-led tours affording unforgettable encounters, while keeping you and the animals safe, and the environment protected. What’s more, while these often charming retreats provide plenty of comfort and Canadian hospitality, many also feature tours that encompass a wider range of interests, from bird watching and nature hikes to kayaking and cultural tours. You might even catch a glimpse of some of Canada’s other famed wildlife, with coastal lodges often in prime positions for whale watching.

TRIP REPORT: SRI LANKA

Wexas Travel’s Debbie Mayger reports back from a trip which saw her explore the rich heritage, golden beaches and wildlife-filled national parks of Sri Lanka.

I’m not a cup of tea, but if I was, I wouldn’t be an English Breakfast Tea, I’d be the finest loose-leaf Ceylon. Ceylon, known today as Sri Lanka, is a stunning island nation in the Indian Ocean, a teardrop falling from the great Indian Subcontinent. And, while it’s renowned for its terrific tea, there’s far more to this enigmatic country than the produce of those famed hill-station estates. Here are my trip highlights.

World Heritage Galle

My trip began in Galle which, as I discovered, can be easily explored on foot. A venerable port town, it has grown from ancient origins, and the ramparts of its UNESCO World Heritage-listed fort served as Sri Lanka’s principal harbour for much of the 19th century. Always bustling and wonderfully colourful, the area is now home to everything from boutique hotels to cute cafés and chic shops, which I explored on a morning meander. Slightly away from the fortified area, along the shore, you’ll find Galle’s famous stilt fishermen, whose ancient methods were widely adopted in the region following over-fishing during World War II. I was amazed and slightly saddened when our chap quickly caught a tiny powder-blue tang – a ‘Dory’ from Finding Nemo – though I confess to being thrilled when he gently popped her back. And, for those who remember Crush, the turtle from the same movie, Sri Lanka is home to five of the world’s seven turtle species, all of which hatch on this very stretch of sand.

Wildlife in

Yala National Park

Sticking to the wildlife theme, my next stop was Yala National Park. A huge area of forest, grassland, lakes and lagoons, this sprawling park is a wild and beautiful region, home to Buddhist ruins and centuries-old cave paintings, all framed by rolling hills and the sparkling Indian Ocean.

It’s a spectacular habitat that’s home to everything from leopards and elephants to bears and hundreds of bird species. And, while I wasn’t lucky enough to see one of

the famous melanistic (black) leopards – or even any of its 80-plus golden cousins – I was delighted to spot a rare giant grizzled squirrel, and an extremely rare Sri Lankan sloth bear.

On the beach in Mirissa

My final stop was the beach resort of Mirissa, where you can relax at oceanfront boutique hotels, sunbathe on beautiful beaches, dine on delicious seafood and even spot blue whales on their migration between the southern and northern hemispheres. The region is also popular with fin, sperm and Bryde’s whales as well as many, many dolphins and even the occasional Orca. For me, though, it was a chance to relax and take stock of a truly memorable trip to a country I simply can’t recommend highly enough.

Perhaps you’ll join Silversea on a cruise around Japan during cherry blossom season, pair an Alaskan exploration with a trip aboard Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer, or head east with AmaWaterways to discover the ancient treasures of the Mekong River.

ON BOARD SILVER RAY

I was extremely privileged to be an invited guest on Silver Ray’s shakedown cruise to Portugal earlier this year – a rare chance to be among the first to experience Silversea’s brand-new Nova Class ship. And I must say, what a beautiful ship she is, with her asymmetrical and ‘horizontal’ design breaking Silversea’s long-standing tradition of having suites only in the front two-thirds of the ship and the public lounges and areas situated aft and vertically on top of each other. This new approach really does maximise the space onboard and offers outstanding public spaces, easily accessible from all parts of the ship.

Silver Ray is incredibly spacious. In fact, if all 728 guests were to be on the top deck at the same time, they would each have a personal space of an impressive 6.6 sqm. Decks 4, 5 and 10 are dedicated to public areas from forward to aft, whilst the in-between decks 6-9 are where the suites are located. Naturally, each suite has a dedicated butler, ready to assist with your every request and ensure your onboard experience is as seamless as possible. Need help setting up your Otium Shower Spa experience, or advice on the extensive pillow menu? Just ask.

Suites range from the Classic Veranda at 33 sqm to the magnificent, 123 sqm Otium Suite with its separate lounge, dining area and bedroom, and a jacuzzi gracing a huge veranda. My favourite, though, had to be the Silver Suite, particularly for its luxurious lounge area and separate bedroom, which in turn opens out onto a large and welcoming outside space.

Away from the accommodation, there are no fewer than 10 dining venues (including in-suite), covering all tastes and styles, from the haute cuisine of La Dame to the chef’s tasting menu at S.A.L.T. right through to the Japanese delicacies at Kaiseki and delicious Italian fare at La Terrazza. For me, the Marquee was a standout option with its healthy breakfasts and lighter lunches, while the chance to cook my own steak on a hot volcanic stone at dinner was a real highlight. I also loved the relaxed, outdoor feel, with fabulous views from wherever you’re seated.

Onwards to Deck Five and the excellent Otium Spa, which features treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room and a delightful spa pool – the perfect spot to relax after a day’s exploration. There’s also a large gym and exercise rooms if you feel like getting active. Then, up on Deck 10, there’s the further indulgence of an expansive swimming pool, set asymmetrically midship to the starboard side from where you have the best rooftop view in any port you visit. There are also plenty of areas to simply relax in, with ample sun loungers and spots in or out of the shade. Of course, there’s always that attentive crew member close at hand to bring you a drink and to plump up your cushions.

What I especially loved onboard were the numerous seating areas, such as the ever-so-peaceful Observation Lounge, the tucked-away library, the Connoisseur Club or even the simple reading areas on the middle decks featuring full-length windows for uninterrupted sea views. Even the two sets of elevators

up the side of the ship are glass-enclosed, so views of the sea are always close by.

Lastly, the ambience on board is very much one of casual elegance, which perfectly matches the stylish furnishings and décor adorned with copious artworks. Indeed, the whole experience feels like a luxurious

Sticking with Northern Europe, there will also be the chance to explore the best of the Baltics, taking in the likes of Tallinn, Helsinki and Visby, and a short cruise across to Rotterdam and Bruges. Plus, there will be ample options for sun-seekers, with a range of options taking in Spain and Portugal – the season will start and end with an 11-night Canaries and Portugal voyage – and even a spectacular Mediterranean adventure to Florence, Pisa and Portofino in Italy.

While the recent debut of Vista in 2023 and the highly anticipated launch of Allura in June 2025 have taken the headlines, Oceania has also been reimagining its existing fleet. Following the complete refurbishment of both Nautica and Riviera in 2022, Marina was also recently relaunched in May 2024, again after a complete refurbishment. As such, guests will be treated to upgraded public spaces including Martinis cocktail bar, The Grand Dining Room, the Library and Horizons – the ultimate spot for afternoon tea – which all feature plush new carpets and refreshed upholstery, creating a sense of opulent grandeur while still maintaining that signature home-from-home atmosphere for which Oceania is renowned. Elsewhere, the Penthouse Suites have been given a complete makeover, with custom-crafted furniture and additional storage, while bathrooms now boast Italian marble throughout.

Perhaps most notable, however, is the range of new and improved culinary experiences, including three new dining options: Aquamar Kitchen, the wellness-focused dining venue which debuted on Vista in 2023; an expanded ice cream parlour serving delicious milkshakes and smoothies poolside; and an al-fresco trattoria specialising in traditional Italian dishes, including the finest freshlymade pizzas.

UNIWORLD IN INDIA

Wexas expert Krishna Ghosh enjoys an emotional cruise on the sacred Ganges, and finds out why this is an excellent option for first-time visitors to this remarkable country.

When I found out I’d be heading to India on a trip with Uniworld, I was, of course, delighted. When I discovered that the cruise in question would see me sail past my old family home and the school I once attended, it transformed what would have been an exciting adventure into something altogether more personal.

Arriving in Kolkata on a bright, sunny morning, l was met by a Uniworld representative for an hour-and-a-half transfer through the heart of the ‘City of Joy’ to the dock on the banks of the Ganges where my river ship, Ganges Voyager II, was moored. Stepping aboard, I was shown to my accommodation – a Signature Suite with a private bathroom and French balcony – where I had time to relax before setting sail under the famous Howrah Bridge. As the afternoon faded into evening, an optional yoga session on the top deck provided a further chance to unwind before a sail-away cocktail in the lounge and a dinner which celebrated the region’s vibrant cuisine – a delicious way to end a wonderful first day onboard.

Then, over the course of two memorable days, Uniworld set about bringing this beautiful corner of India to life. We began with a morning in Kalna, a delightfully serene place, particularly after the chaos of Kolkata. Here, an early-morning excursion by electric rickshaw showcased beautiful terra-cotta carvings depicting local myths and rituals, followed by a stop at a local market selling seasonal vegetable and fruits. Then, following breakfast, there was time to relax onboard, where I joined a cookery demonstration hosted by the ship’s talented chefs, who talked passionately about the region’s unique culinary traditions. We then enjoyed wonderful views of rural river life as we sailed towards Chandernagore – a former French Colony, which only officially became part of India in 1952. And, while the town itself is notable for its rich mix of French-era architecture, including the impressive Sacred Heart Church, for me it was also a homecoming, as it was here, in my childhood, that I attended St Joseph’s Convent School on the banks of Hooghly river.

As another day on the Ganges came to an end, there was more sunset yoga followed by music from a group of traditional Baul singers on the ship’s deck as we began our slow voyage back to Kolkata. I must say, the singing and dancing were infectious, and before long everyone was up and joining in.

Once back in Kolkata, it was time to leave the ship behind. But, as with all of Uniworld’s India itineraries, the adventure was far from over, as I then looked forward to a

guided tour of the famed Golden Triangle – Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. The wonderful thing about this ‘extra’ leg of the itinerary is that it offers an introduction to an altogether different side of the country – the one of storybooks and postcards, where iconic sights rise up from the streets of some of the country’s most vibrant cities. Over four memorable days, we explored the markets, temples and tombs of Delhi on guided tours and cycle rickshaw rides; marvelled at the wonders of ‘pink’ Jaipur in Rajasthan, with its grand City Palace and majestic fort; and took two trips to the Taj Mahal, with private viewings at both sunset and sunrise, all without the usual crowds. I was also lucky enough to enjoy the sight of India’s most famous monument from my luxurious hotel room at the excellent Oberoi Amarvilasm – a truly wonderful experience.

Indeed, one of the best parts of the Golden Triangle tour was the excellent choice of hotels – our itinerary included stays at three Oberoi properties – which meant the transition from luxury river cruise to land-based travel was utterly seamless. That, and the guides were fantastic throughout, layering each tour with plenty of colour and lots of information, delivered with infectious energy, passion and pride. We were even treated to a farewell dinner served on the rooftop of the Oberoi Delhi – the perfect end to an unforgettable adventure.

Krishna’s cruise highlights

• Relax on the spacious sundeck. With comfortable seating, it was the perfect spot to unwind with a book, enjoy a drink or watch the changing rural scenery

• Explore remote locations in luxury, only accessible by river ship and all without the hassle of packing and unpacking

• Enjoy immersive experiences, from market walks where you’ll have the chance to interact with locals to travelling on rickshaws and tuk tuks

• Onboard performance every evening by local musicians and dancers depicting the local culture and heritage

• A perfect cruise for first-time visitors looking to experience the country in a safe and secure way

• Ideal for return visitors looking to see a different side of the country, away from the tourist trail

MAHARAJAS’ EXPRESS

While Uniworld’s standard India itinerary includes a tour of the Golden Triangle, there are also three special dates where you can pair your river cruise with a journey on India’s most opulent train – the Maharajas’ Express. Travelling from Mumbai to Delhi or vice versa, it’s a chance to soak up the sights of regal Rajasthan, be enchanted by the glamour of Bollywood, experience the majestic Taj Mahal, and even go in search of tigers in Ranthambore National Park. This unique itinerary departs 18 January, 1 November and 5 December 2025. Call for details.

A 14-day Ganges river cruise & Golden Triangle tour with Uniworld starts from £5,725 pp incl. flights, UK airport lounge access, transfers, 7-night river cruise aboard Ganges Voyager with all meals & selected drinks, shore excursions, onboard entertainment, lectures & wifi, 5 nights accommodation in Oberoi hotels & guided tours in Jaipur, Delhi & Agra with English-speaking guides.
