With SAI-E distributors the signals are already processed near the sensors. The current range includes products for the logic functions AND, OR, NAND and NOR. Other functions are currently being developed. Four inputs have a logical link with one output.

The logic distributor in the plastic hood can be connected to the PCB either directly or by means of a prefabricated M12 cable (both in the same hood or a similar one).
If an input is not being used, a simulation connector can be used to set an input into active state.
There are many advantages to processing signals on the spot: users no longer need a high-pole lead and save both time and material costs. Savings are also possible in the PLC, i.e. with the input cards: now only one input is used instead of four.

The SAI OVP provides local, direct protection against overvoltages. The distributor can be used in conjunction with a passive hood (see figure) or in conjunction with a field bus plug-on module. M12 plug-in connectors connect the cables securely and simply to the SAI OVP.

With combi-bus – line wiring and combination bus power / PLC feed T-piece Weidmüller SAI distributors: SAI active – a new wiring concept for Profibus DP – combines voltage supply and bus line. The established range of Weidmuller SAI distributor products, which includes both passive units and Bus modules, with protocol's including CAN, Profibus DP and AS interfaces, supports and enables, effective, decentralised automation. Automation technology with such a structure is transparent, efficient and cost-effective. Up to now, the elaborate cabling required has not been taken into consideration. Voltage supplies and bus lines were laid strictly separately – an expensive, complicated approach. In addition, laying the cables was a tedious and time-consuming operation, and fault-finding took valuable time. Therefore, Weidmüller, together with a leading machine tools manufacturer, developed an intelligent, comprehensive wiring concept based on the following components: PLC feed T-piece, PLC, power and combi-bus lines. Various SAI distributors with plug-on Profibus electronics and a terminating resistor complete the system.
Description of the system
The costs-benefits ratio of this joint concept for machine and plant manufacturers is quite impressive: voltage supply and bus line are combined in one combi-bus cable with a corresponding plug-in connector. The result is that a separate voltage supply for the input modules is no longer necessary. Output modules for the load are equipped with a separate plug to avoid restricting the power capacity of the output modules. A T-piece in the electrical cabinet joins the PLC line and the voltage supply line together to form one combi-cable. This wiring concept and its components has already been used successfully in a number of machines operating with up to 12 MB.

The active SAI family includes fieldbus components for Profibus-DP, CANopen, Interbus and AS-Interface. To make full use of the cost-saving effects of fieldbus networked I/O systems, the input and/or output devices should be introduced into the process directly on spot. Modules to protection class IP 67 should be used in environments with high pollutant and/or moisture levels. Weidmüller’s IP 67 active SAI distributor family offers a number of new solutions. The modules consist of the well established passive SAI (UT) distributors with a pluggable electronic module. The electronic modules are available for Profibus-DP, CANopen and Interbus. The main advantage of this modular design is the pre-wiring of the passive SAI modules by means of M12 or IDC HARAX®. This means that the choice of a certain fieldbus does not depend on the wiring of the passive SAI modules.
The corresponding fieldbus can be changed later on at any time, without affecting the field wiring. The following modules can be used for wiring: • 8-channel M12 4- or 5-pin • 4-channel M12 5-pin • 8-channel IDC 3- or 4-pin • 4-channel IDC 4-pin • 2-channel M16 12-pin • 4-channel M12 8-pin Once both units have been joined together and labelled accordingly, incorrect connection is then ruled out during any subsequent servicing or modification work. In the case of cable gland modules, there is an option of sending both operating voltage and the bus from one module to the next, although the maximum current carrying capacity must be taken into consideration in this case.

Technical notes: Separation of the electronic component from the sensor/actuator connection level makes it possible to choose the most favourable connection solution for the user. If, for example, antivalent sensors are to be used in the machine, then these components can be connected up simply using a 5-pin/4channel base, because the distributor cannel is already equipped with two signal paths. A 4-channel base can also be used in confined spaces. Free choice of connection The choice of the connection technology for initiators is open. You can work either with the well-known M12 plug-in connectors or with the insulation displacement technique. For the M12 system, the 4-pin version consists of a circuit wire, +, - and PE. The 5-pin version has a second circuit wire. The IDC connections manage without PE, so that the 3-pin IDC connection can be compared with the 4-pin M12 channel and the 4-pin IDC connection with the 5-pin M12 channel. Free choice of bus and power connection The range of different connection possibilities required for the bus and external power supply is as varied as the machine builders themselves. Weidmüller’s SAI active distributors offer a choice between cable glands or metric cable glands with M23 (Interbus) or M12 (coded B, Profibus-DP) (coded A and CAN) connectors. The version with cable gland is suitable for installations where the distance to the next station is not known in advance and the lead has to be connected on site. If “plug-and-play” is required in combination with pre-assembled leads, it is recommended to use the distributor with metric plug-in connectors to the bus and power supply. Machines can be pre-wired in the sensor/actuator area. The decision which actuator head is to be fitted can be taken later. There are also cost advantages in terms of storage.

Profibus-DP is a master-slave system, consisting of one master (usually implemented in the PLC) and up to 31 slaves per segment. During operation, the master constantly queries the slave stations. Several masters can also be integrated within one network and pass on the transmission authorisation (token passing).
The network is set up in a line structure with an active bus terminator at either end. To activate the bus terminator, in the PG version the connector box must be pulled out of the bus terminator and the switch set to position 1.
There is a free choice of address settings from 2 to 99. The address for the corresponding setting is adjusted by hand. Two decimal coded rotary switches are located underneath the screw cap, with separate adjustment of the tens and units.
Profibus-DP uses a physical layer based on the RS 485 standard which has proven its worth in industrial use. The system uses a shielded, twisted 2-wire cable and is extremely resistant to electrical interference. Profibus-DP is suitable for connecting up a large number of I/O points: Up to 126 addressed subscribers allow for the connection of thousands of analog and digital I/O points within a network. Each Profibus-DP module has a socalled GSD file (Geräte Stammdaten Datei, device master data file) containing detailed information about the module (I/O data scope, possible transmission rates, re-processing status, etc.). The station GSD file is required to configure a station within the Profibus-DP system.
The M12 version uses a bus terminator connector (Order no. 1784770000).
Transmission rate
Ideally there should be no stub cable: Weidmüller modules have two special connections for the fieldbus. Maximum system extension Profibus-DP can take max. 32 devices per segment. One segment corresponds to the sub-section between two repeaters. If no repeater is used, then the whole network corresponds to one segment. The following table indicates the maximum extension range.
The transmission rate must be identical throughout the whole network, and is defined by the master. The baud rate is compared automatically on “Mains on”. No adjustments need to be made at the module. At 12 Mbit/s, the typical response time is <1ms per 1000 I/O points. The baud rate cannot be changed during operation!

The new wiring concept: SAI active – well designed, efficient and all from one source Intelligent wiring systems are based on consistent, convincing concepts. Weidmüller has cooperated with a leading, innovative machine tool manufacturer to develop a new wiring concept to satisfy practically all demands. The aims of this particular cooperation were stipulated exactly in advance and then elaborated and implemented jointly step by step in project teams. And this is the new wiring concept: A combi-bus cable with corresponding plug-in connector groups together the power supply and bus line so that there is no need for a separate power supply to the input modules. But to ensure that the efficiency of the output modules is not limited, output modules for the load are equipped with a separate connector to make them suitably efficient – quite in contrast to systems where the output modules do not have a separate supply. In addition, there is an important T-piece in the switchboard to bring together the cable from the PLC and the power supply cable in one combi-cable. It goes without saying that Weidmüller offers all necessary components for this innovative wiring system from one single source. And here the range extends from the individual active SAI distributors to all the different leads including the assembled bus lines, right down to the combining T-piece. This family has already been used in machines operating with up to 12 MB.

Basic functions A CAN network is based on a server/client principle with a serial bus to connect network subscribers having equal access status. The electrical connection consists of a two-wire lead which can be shielded or not shielded depending on the application. CANopen has been defined as a uniform protocol for networking the different CAN subscribers. It stipulates the significance of the data for the corresponding device type (e.g. I/O modules, drives, shaft encoders, controllers). This means that application programmers can now use all CANopen-compatible components regardless of the manufacturer and without any great workload. CANopen subscribers in the same device family organise their data in the same way. The characteristics of these device classes are summarised in “device profiles”. An object directory is defined in CANopen nodes and describes all device parameters. This is used not only for device description but also as data access interface by other CANopen devices. Larger data quantities where time is not critical are transferred using “service data objects” (SDOs). In addition at least two “process data objects” (PDOs) are available for the transmission of process data. Manufacturer-specific objects and other functions are described in the manual. Each CANopen module has a so-called “EDS file” (electronic data sheet) with an exact description of the module. All information about I/O and status data required by a master, for example a PLC or IPC, are saved in this file and can be used to integrate the module step by step into the control program. Network structure The ISO standard 11898 prescribes a line structure for setting up the CAN network. A line structure has a terminating resistor of 120 Ohm at each end. Weidmüller SAI distributors CANopen in the cable gland version have an internal switch for switching on the terminating resistor.
Addressing There is a free choice of address settings from 1 to 99. The address for the corresponding setting is adjusted manually. Two decimal coded rotary switches are located underneath the screw cap, with separate adjustment of the tens and units. Bus line length/transmission rate The maximum length of the bus line depends on the transmission rate (baud rate). The following table acts as a guide for optimum bus design:
The M12 version has a bus terminating connector (Order no.: 1784770000). Preferably there should not be any stub cables. Weidmüller modules have two special connections for connecting the fieldbus.

Plug-in module with circular connectors
Basic functions Interbus is a serial bus system for data transfer between control systems and remote I/O modules with connected sensors and actuators (control and display devices, drives, etc.). The used protocol is described in DIN EN 50254. Transmission security reaches Hamming distance 4.
Network structure Interbus systems are always operated with a ring-type bus structure so that simultaneous transmission and reception is possible. The Interbus corresponds to a single master system, i.e. one master controls all subscribers of an Interbus ring. Starting from the master (tripping component), all subscribers are connected to the bus system in the form of a ring. Each subscriber has two separate lines for transmitting and receiving data. This avoids the need for a return cable from the last to the first subscriber, as in the simple ring system. The outgoing and incoming cables are all routed in one bus line. The SAI active Interbus distributor is a remote bus subscriber. The remote bus connects the master with the remote bus subscribers and the remote bus subscribers with each other. Remote bus subscribers are bus terminals, certain I/O modules or mixtures of both. They each have a local power supply with electrical separation to the next Interbus segment. The maximum number of subscribers is 512, with max. 254 as remote bus subscribers in a network. The max. number of I/O points is limited to 4096.
Addressing The field modules are addressed automatically in order by the master. Bus line length/transmission rate The transmission rate is defined as 500 kbit/s for the remote bus.

Profibus
Line distributor with M8 and M12 plug-in connector IP 67 The new SAI Active Line is a field bus slave in compact form. The Profibus DP cable is connected by means of two M12 B-coded plug-in connectors. The power supply for the module is via a standard M12 A-coded plug. The sensors and actuators are connected to the module with M8 or M12 plugs. The advantage of the 8DIO version is that every pin automatically detects whether an input or an output is required without having to set the module parameters first. This means that the module automatically detects whether a sensor or an actuator is connected and automatically provides the right control. The configuration software of the PLC manufacturer provides one output and one input byte which simply have to be addressed. Furthermore, one output has a diagnostics function where the associated input is high when the output is set and there is no short-circuit at the output. Basic function Profibus-DP
Network structure
Profibus-DP is a master-slave system, consisting of one master (usually implemented in the PLC) and up to 31 slaves per segment. During operation, the master constantly queries the slave stations. Several masters can also be integrated within one network and pass on the transmission authorisation (token passing).
The network is set up in a line structure with an active bus terminator at either end. To activate the bus terminator, in the PG version the connector box must be pulled out of the bus terminator and the switch set to position 1.
Profibus-DP uses a physical layer based on the RS 485 standard which has proven its worth in industrial use. The system uses a shielded, twisted 2-wire cable and is extremely resistant to electrical interference. Profibus-DP is suitable for connecting up a large number of I/O points: Up to 126 addressed subscribers allow for the connection of thousands of analog and digital I/O points within a network. Each Profibus-DP module has a socalled GSD file (Geräte Stammdaten Datei) or Vector Graphics files containing detailed information about the module (I/O data scope, possible transmission rates, re-processing status, etc.). The station GSD file is required to configure a station within the Profibus-DP system. The GSD files are available on the Weidmüller website http://www.weidmueller.com and click on country which matches your language requirements, followed by a click on ”Products” and ”Fieldbus Components.”
The M12 version uses a bus terminator connector (Order no. 1784770000). Ideally there should be no stub cable: Weidmüller modules have two special connections for the fieldbus. Maximum system extension Profibus-DP can take max. 32 devices per segment. One segment corresponds to the sub-section between two repeaters. If no repeater is used, then the whole network corresponds to one segment. The following table indicates the maximum extension range. Addressing There is a free choice of address settings from 2 to 99. The address for the corresponding setting is adjusted by hand. Two decimal coded rotary switches are located underneath the screw cap, with separate adjustment of the tens and units. Transmission rate The transmission rate must be identical throughout the whole network, and is defined by the master. The baud rate is compared automatically on “Mains on”. No adjustments need to be made at the module. At 12 Mbit/s, the typical response time is <1ms per 1000 I/O points. The baud rate cannot be changed during operation!

AS-Interface (actuator/sensor interface)
Basic functions The AS-Interface is a serial bus system specially designed for data transfer between binary sensors and actuators and a master. The new AS-Interface specification 2.1 can also be used to transmit analog signals. The AS-Interface is used in large systems underneath the Profibus-DP line. A gateway links the Profibus-DP and the AS-Interface bus. The main feature is a two-wire ribbon cable which transmits data and auxiliary power at the same time. The main advantages of this system are the free topology and simple assembly with the piercing system. In Weidmüller SAI modules, this separates the field level from the electronic level. Network structure Free choice of topology allows for both line and tree structures. The AS-Interface specification 2.0 allowed for 31 slaves, and the new ASInterface specification 2.2 allows for up to 62 slaves to be connected to an ASInterface line. Addressing Each slave has its own address at the bus. In Weidmüller modules, the address is programmed using a hand terminal with infrared adapter or via the master. Addresses can also be adjusted using a gateway.
Bus line length / transmission rate The maximum length of the bus line is 100 m. Distances of 300 m can be covered with 2 repeaters.
AS-Interface hoods EMC and ESD protection for AS-Interface modules Metal hoods are used for low-priced, reliable EMC and ESD protection for ASInterface modules.
The transmission rate is fixed at 167 kbit/s
The metal hoods are simply plugged onto the standard SAI AS-Interface distributor. They surround the plastic enclosure completely and thus guarantee EMC and ESD protection.

New I/O wiring concepts
SAI-Active
Inadequate space or special applications require the use of an SAI M8 distributor. Machine builders using bus systems need an M8 distributor with integrated electronic component, but these are too big and heavy for special applications.
