Paris – Warsaw with one loco?

On its way from Paris to Warsaw a train has to run under three different catenary voltages. No problem with Schaltbau electrics for rolling stock. The vacuum circuit breaker connects the train to the supply system, the voltage selector adjusts the electrical configuration of the train to the detected voltage, and the traction contactors are suitable both for AC and DC operation. With our control devices – from ID card reader to master controller – the driver will drive the train safely to its destination.

Equipment for driver’s cabs and passenger use Control devices come in a great variety of shapes and styles. The master controllers of modular design allow for the flexible construction of a driver’s cab. In addition to that we offer components to equip railway vehicles in commuter and main-line service. Operating elements and control devices for mounting in driver’s desks are part of the product range and also control and indicating panel assemblies for passenger coaches.

Snap-action switches with positive opening operation are unique throughout the world. They are characterised by high quality, reliability and long design life. Schaltbau snap-action switches are not only much used in railway applications but also in all applications where safety is a major requirement..

Brochure Snap-action switches.en

Electric equipment for rail brakes Our MG brake monitoring device is a complete electric control device for activating and monitoring the magnetic rail brake installation of rail vehicles.

High-voltage roof equipment Our AC vacuum circuit breakers are used on electric locomotives and multiple units. Only a little energy is needed to switch on the catenary voltage. The necessary energy is stored in a spring. Even an almost flat battery can supply the minimum amount of energy to unlatch the spring and trigger the starting operation.

Contactors High-quality contactors have proven themselves in the demanding railway environment for decades. Their great variety of shapes and styles as well as their suitability for all common control voltages make possible a host of applications.

Cam-operated switching elements

Fusible overtemperature protection and tripping devices

Cam-operated switching elements of Schaltbau are commonly operated by cam discs, so both the operating position and the operating sequence can be determined arbitrarily.

Schaltbau fusible overtemperature protection and tripping devices ensure fail-safe thermal cutout protection against overheating of electric air heaters as used in rail vehicles and stationary heating systems.

There are different styles for AC and DC applications. Cam-operated switching elements are typically used as auxiliary switches of contactors, and as constituents in camshaft gear, toggle switch assemblies, key switches, and applications with special requirements as to switching capacity.

The devices are a prerequisite for fire protection and operate totally independent of the heater controls.

H2/H3 switchgear cabinets

Series ZH2000-1030

H2/H3 equipment cabinet with disconnecting and earthing device and high-voltage switchgear

Safety contactor for HV switchgear cabinets

The high-voltage switchgear of passenger coaches is integrated in these cabinets. The built-in disconnecting and earthing device ensures safe maintenance. Mounted in the underframe of the rail vehicle the high-voltage switchgear is used for switching the power supply and the high-voltage heating installation. Optional are components for adjusting the electrical configuration to the requirements of cross-border traffic.

The new Schaltbau safety contactor ZH2000 combines main contactor and disconnecting and earthing function in one device. Mounted in a high-voltage switchgear cabinet, the safety contactor oper ates like any other main contactor. On opening the cabinet, a safety loop is being interrupted and the main contactor is switched off electrically. A special feature is that main contacts which may have become welded together are opened by mechanical force. After that the disconnecting and earthing operation is carried out.

Features Switchgear cabinets with disconnecting and earthing device in accordance with the applicable safety regulations

Main contactor with positive opening operation and earthing function in one device

Adjustment of the HV heating to 5 different supply voltages

Can be padlocked for maintenance in disconnected position

Switchgear cabinets for all UIC voltages to customer requirements

Safety at maintenance of high-voltage installations: Disconnecting and earthing devices provide easy disconnecting of high-voltage equipment from a high-voltage busbar and connect these parts to ground potential to take away all electric energy which might rest in capacitors and other components. Our modular disconnecting and earthing devices guarantee working safely on disconnected and grounded high-voltage installations.

Power is supplied to passenger coaches from the locomotive via the train line. Static onboard inverters transform the high voltage from the train line into the desired load voltages. The control voltage necessary for operating the inverters is provided by a vehicle battery. In the event of a flat battery, the static inverters and contactors are fed by the flat battery power supply for approximately 3 x 3 minutes directly from the high voltage of the train line.

Features Disconnecting and earthing device in accordance with the applicable safety regulations Suitable for all UIC voltages Insulation for operating voltages up to 5 kV DC max. Standardised version with the following advantages: Can be mounted on the left-hand, right-hand, or bottom side Vertically mounted for equipment cabinets Horizontally mounted for power compartments Readily available for the project start

Static inverter with power factor adjustment Providing control voltage for static inverters of power supply equipment directly from the train line Suitable for all train lines carrying voltages to UIC 550 and rail vehicles with high-voltage inverters providing power from the train line Operational reliability: Failure free operation and supply with rolling stock No cancellation of train service because of flat batteries

High-voltage change-over unit for rail vehicles

Voltage selector for rail vehicles

Schaltbau change-over units are designed for load-free switching of electrical loads. They are applied in rail vehicles which are used in cross-border service and are operated with different high-voltage power sources. Required control signals are generated by the corresponding voltage selector ZH1114.

With its voltage and frequency analyzer ZH1114 Schaltbau meets the requirements of modern cross-border traffic. The ZH1114 identifies the voltage ranges according to UIC 550 and operates as electronic control device for the Schaltbau change-over unit, which adapts the individual loads of the railway vehicle to the different detected supply voltages. Additionally, the correct electrical configuration is being tested by the device.

Solid-state HV signalling relay

MG brake monitoring device

The ZH842 H Series solid-state high-voltage sensor signals high voltage applied to the train line. The device supplies electrical loads, which for the conservation of battery power are only operated when high voltage is being applied, with control voltage.

MG brakes consist of two electromagnets which are mounted between the two axles of a bogie. In case of an emergency brake application, the magnets are pneumatically lowered to the rails and supplied with energy from the vehicle battery.

Mode of operation: The ZH842 H switches on a potential-free relay contact as long as the high voltage at the input terminals exceeds the signalling voltage.

The MG brake monitoring device of Schaltbau is a complete electric control device for activating and monitoring the magnetic rail brake installation of rail vehicles.

Features Identification of UIC 550 compliant voltages (1 kV 162/3 Hz / 1.5 kV 50 Hz / 1.5 kV DC / 3 kV DC) and 3 kV 50 Hz Meets insulation requirements for 3 kV DC (UIC 550) according to EN 50124-1:2001+A1 Low stand-by consumption

Electrical control and monitoring of electro-magnetic rail brakes Voltage-independent function test using resistance measurement under load Fault display selectable for each bogie Available for all current types of brake magnets and battery networks used in rail vehicles
