Reflow soldering is no longer restricted to SMD’s (Surface Mount Devices). Using a combination of special high temperature resistant plastic and innovative component design, Weidmueller has developed THT (Through-Hole Technology) pin-headers and pcb terminals that can be 100 % incorporated into the automatic pcb assembly process. These components are supplied as standard in cartons, or anti-static Tape-on-Reel packaging for integration into automatic Pick-&-Place machines. The high-tech plastic has a melting point greater than 300 °C and so is perfect for the Reflow soldering process or higher temperatures associated with Lead-Free Wave soldering. The Weidmueller SMT/THR components aid the reduction of overall production costs thus improving manufacturing efficiency. Accessories SL-SMarT The innovative new SL-SMarT has been conceived to overcome the one disadvantage found with SMT/THR components; their larger relative size and weight in comparison to normal passive SMD’s (Surface Mount Devices). Automatic Pick-&-Place machines are at their most cost-effective when operating at top speed. Multipole pin-headers and PCB terminals force users to reduce the machine placements speeds in order to reduce quality issues. Reduced speeds equal higher assembly costs!

The SL-SMarT incorporates an interlocking ‘tongue and groove’ mecahnism, which means that all required pole numbers can be acheived just by using the 2 and 3 pole components. The ‘tongue and groove’ mechanism also absorbs any pitch tolerance between PCB holes. This results in the SL-SMarT being ideal for assemblies in both 5.00 mm (0.197 inch) and 5.08 mm (0.200 inch) pitches.

The latest addition to the Weidmueller family of Reflow-process compatible products is the spacesaving, double-level pin-header SLDV-THR 5.08. The prime advantage of a double-level PCB header is the relative saving of PCB surface space or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;real estateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, in comparison to two single-level pin-headers. The re-design and introduction of high temperature resistant plastic now enables users to integrate the product into their Reflow soldering process.

Weidmueller’s standard THT (Through-Hole Technology) pcb terminals and connectors have been specifically designed for the Wave(Flow) soldering process. With the most frequently used pcb’s worldwide being single layer 1.6 mm (0.062 inch) and 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) thick, the solder pin length of pcb terminals and connectors needs to be at least 3.2 mm (0.126 inch) long in order to provide problem-free soldering.

High contact force is only effective if it is continuous. When the clamping screw is turned, the Weidmueller clamping yoke rises in the component housing until the cable is firmly held between the current-bar and clamping yoke. Further turning of the screw achieves the optimum torque level according to DIN EN 60 999. At the point of maximum permitted torque, the upper thread-overlap of the yoke opens causing a locking action to be exerted on the screw. A maintenance-free and continuous torque is thus achieved.

The Weidmueller TOP termination method is a screw clamp connection that simplifies field wiring work. even in the most restricted spaces. With the cable entry and screw activation points on the same side of the connector. equipment design can be simplified.

Standard screw clamps normally have an operating angle of 90° between cable entry and screw. The equipment must then be designed to incorporate this required area of operation.

When the clamping screw is turned. the ‘heel’ clamp in the Weidmueller TOP connection is levered onto the cable. Further turning of the screw presses the cable onto the current bar until the required torque level is achieved; securely fixing the cable.

When hundreds or thousands of cables need to be terminated, any reduction in the time taken to connect each cable can dramatically effect the overall assembly costs. Screw clamping yoke terminations have twice the clamping strength and cable pull-out force in comparison to screwless tension clamps, but the Weidmueller tension clamp can save seconds per cable connection! The stainless steel spring clamp is opened by inserting a standard flat-blade screwdriver into the spring activation slot. – 1 second. The prepared cable is inserted into the cable entry point. – 1 second. The screwdriver is removed, thus clamping the cable. – 1 second. 3 seconds, finished!

Clamping yoke connection socket connectors

The screw clamping yoke is the most popular and widely used cable connection method worldwide. The security of the cable is vital for every application, and the Weidmueller clamping yoke design has proven its reliability for millions of connections in hundreds of thousands of applications over the last 40 years. The best and most reliable cable connection mechanisms use the best materials for the mechanical and electrical funtions: steel parts for strength and security, brass or copper parts for conductivity. The Weidmueller clamping yoke and screw are made from hardened steel and are zinc-chrome plated to prevent corrosion. The current carrying bar/pins are made from a tin plated copper alloy. High contact force is only effective if it is continuous. When the clamping screw is turned, the Weidmueller clamping yoke rises in the component housing until the cable is firmly held between the current-bar and clamping yoke. Further turning of the screw achieves the optimum torque level according to DIN EN 60 999. At the point of maximum permitted torque, the upper thread-overlap of the yoke opens causing a locking action to be exerted on the screw. A maintenance-free and continuous torque is thus achieved.

The Weidmueller TOP termination method is a screw clamp connection that simplifies field wiring work, even in the most restricted spaces. With the cable entry and screw activation points on the same side of the connector, equipment design can be simplified.

Standard screw clamps normally have an operating angle of 90° between cable entry and screw. The equipment must then be designed to incorporate this required area of operation.

When the clamping screw is turned, the ‘heel’ clamp in the Weidmueller TOP connection is levered onto the cable. Further turning of the screw presses the cable onto the current bar until the required torque level is achieved; securely fixing the cable.

Leaf spring connection socket connector

When a screw termination is wanted but the commercial considerations outweigh the technical requirements, then the simple Wire-Protection connection is the ideal termination method. The Weidmueller Wire-Protection clamps provide cost-effective, compact, fit-for-purpose wiring solutions. When the clamping screw is turned, it decends, pushing the leaf-spring onto the cable until a secure connection is achieved. The Leaf Spring prevents the screw from digging into the cable and damaging individual cable strands.

IDC (Insulation Displacement Connection) is the fastest manual cable connection method available. It is 60% faster than screw clamping. and 40% faster than spring clamp connections. IDC completely removes the need to strip the insulation from the cable. The unprepared flexible cable is simply inserted into the cable-entry point. The cable slide is then pushed into place using thumb or screwdriver. and the connection is then complete. The main body of the connector houses a V-shaped IDC blade which cuts through the cable insulation and bites into the bare copper. This produces a gas-tight and vibration-resistant connection. The Weidmueller IDC connections are designed to and conform with DIN EN 60 352-4.

A perfect crimp connection produces a permanent electrical and mechanical bond between the copper cable and the crimp contact. During crimping, the crimping tool stresses the copper cable strands, breaking-up any poor conductive surface layers and preventing the penetration of any corrosive materials for the lifetime of the crimp connection. Even severe operating conditions such as temperature cycling, vibration, or aggressive atmospheres cannot affect the gas-tight connection. An additional advantage is that crimped cable looms can be produced by relatively lower skilled technicians away from the application. This makes the use of crimp connections one of the most flexible and cost-effective solutions available. The quality of the crimp is dependant on the crimping tool. Only crimping tools with a ratchet locking device produce a consistent crimp result. A ratchet tool only releases the crimped cable after the required crimp form has been produced. Non ratchet tools however rely on the consistency of the operator, and after many crimping operations the crimp quality cannot be guaranteed.
