U15 water polo athletes at nationals
Four area athletes were in Montreal recently for Water Polo Canada’s National Championships.
Mahlyn Bomberak of Bienfait, Jennika Linthicum of Estevan, Ryan Hoeving of Weyburn and Rachel Tober of Oxbow joined athletes from Regina and Saskatoon on the U15 girls Team Sask.
The team faced teams from Ontario, Quebec and two Alberta teams. The Team Sask finished fifth in round robin play, but fought their way through an exciting wild card game and into the bronze medal game.
The age and experience of third place Quebec proved to be too much for the Sask squad in the medal game. They placed fourth in the tournament. Tober now trains with the Regina Armada club and is involved in Water Polo Sask’s High School Excellence Program. Bomberak and Hoeving will join Tober in Regina in the fall but trained with the Estevan Sharks club this season.
Don Mackinnon receives prestigious Perry Folk Fellowship award
Kevin Folk presented the “Perry Folk Fellowship Award” to Don Mackinnon on July 12, meeting in his garage.
The award is presented in memory of Kevin’s brother Perry, to a golf club patron “who through personal interaction, friendly demeanor and positive attitude, enhances the clubhouse atmosphere and experience.”
One wall of the garage has a blackboard on it, covered in signatures by many of Mackinnon’s family and friends, and he accepted the award in front of the board.
Mackinnon said he was honoured and humbled to have his name put forward for this award.
“It’s very humbling. I knew Perry’s dad Ben, and he was a good friend,” he added, noting he was out on the golf course, on the third hole, when Kevin phoned and informed him he would be receiving the award this year.
Kevin explained that Don’s name was put forward by a number of people as he helped to look after the senior men’s golf held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and noted his name had also been put forward last year by fellow golfers.

“I’m out there five or six days a week,” Mackinnon said. “I like to brighten everybody’s day when I’m at the golf course.”
He added he has a few names he would like nominate for this award for next year’s presentation.
