The community came together for a purpose.
Steph VanDeSype, Recreation and Community Wellness Manager, said, “It was an amazing crowd Everyone who walked through the doors was ready to party and have a great time. The concession operators fed the VIP at -
tendees an amazing supper,” noted VanDeSype.
Tyler Lewis brought along Lisa Moen to the show. While Lewis provided the opening set, he and Moen closed the show with a cabaret that had people dancing until the lights came on.
Attendees said Streetheart put on an incredible show that kept people
singing and dancing throughout their performance.
VanDeSype exclaimed, “Streetheart was amazing to have on site, they were an incredible group of people.”
Residents noticed, and appreciated, an increase of traffic in town as a result of this big ticket event hosted in Assiniboia knowing that events like these benefit their community through both the hospitality industry and Assiniboia’s shopping opportunities. The event was deemed a success and organizers say they will now be in full blown preparations for the next big event at Southland Co-op Centre in July, Australia’s Thunder from Down Under.

Community
Choir to celebrate 40th anniversary of music
Community Choir will be looking sharp as they prepare to hold their spring concert, upcoming May 5 at the Prince of Wales Cultural Centre. The event will also recognize four decades for this memorable musical group in Assiniboia.
Carol Marit, choir director, said, “This spring, the Assiniboia Community Choir is excited to be celebrating its 40th Anniversary. It all started in January 1984 when Sandra Oancia, Cheryl Wood, and Gordon Brunt were singing at church and thought how it was really nice to stand beside someone who sang in harmony. They decided to get a few people together and sing in ‘parts’ just for fun. With Gordon playing piano and joined by Darlene Kowalchuk (the only original member still
active after 40 years), Lois Matton, Colleen Muench, and Diane Rhodes directing, the Assiniboia Community Choir was born.”
Some have referred to Marit’s role as carol-therapy. Rhodes has led the choir for a remarkable 29 years. Her mandate is that anyone who loved to sing was welcome to join this group.
The community musical members of this choir have performed for enthusiastic audiences not just in Assiniboia, but have also been invited to perform in Moose Jaw, Regina, and many other towns in southern Saskatchewan. The group maintains these have all been note-worthy experiences.
ACC are proud participants in the annual Assiniboia Music Festival, while also providing an annual scholarship for young musicians for this event. The group are also performers at the Assini -
boia Rotary Carol Festival, Wood River Ministerial Advent Choral Festival, in addition to their annual spring concert in their home community.
Marit adds, “We have also participated in several Saskatchewan Choral Federation events that include:
• hosted an Artist in Residence, Evelyn Pfeifer, on salary from SCF for a one-year contract in 19941995
• attended SCF workshops in Humboldt and Regina
• performed at Assiniboia Ethnic Jubilee
• performed for the HRH Prince Charles dur-
ing the sod turning of the POW complex
• sang at local senior complexes
Marit notes that membership was once as high as 57 singers, and over the years participants have ranged in age from high school students to 90 years of age. All attribute their success to the common belief that engaging in music makes you part of something life affirming.
“Joining a choir and singing with other people is a rewarding experience which enhances your sense of community, connection, health, and creativity. The choir has seen many people
come and go and remember those who have passed on with fond memories,” affirmed Marit. Accompanists’ past and present to be recognized are Gail Mergen and Marjorie Hamilton. Marit has directed Assiniboia’s Community Choir since 2013 and there are currently 16 active members who rehearse on Tuesday nights. The group is always looking for new members to join their ensemble. The choir has given people opportunity to sing choral arrangements in many genres of music, and are open to nonauditioned choir of varying
musical abilities open to anyone who shares the love of singing.
The annual spring concert will include performances of many genres of music that include swing, ballad, sea shanty, calypso, spiritual, gospel and more. A freewill offering is accepted at the door and the event will offer an afternoon of music and fun.
“A choir does not arrive at a 40th anniversary without the sustained hard work and commitment of many skilled and passionate people. For these years of magical moments - thank you, Assiniboia Community Choir,” said Marit.
Volunteer Appreciation event was a success
Sherri Solomko Freelance Reporter
The joy and gratitude in Tina Dijkstra’s voice following the Volunteer Appreciation event held in Assiniboia on April 20 was evident during an interview. Dijkstra, who serves as Assiniboia’s Finance/ Administration Coordinator was also one of the key organizers of this annual activity. “There were about 165 people in attendance and at one time, I panicked a little wondering if I had set up enough tables. This was definitely our biggest attendance yet,” she said.
Organizers say there as a broad spectrum of volunteers representing multiple groups, organizations and activities in Assiniboia. The youngest in attendance was eight while the oldest, and still active
volunteer, who works with the East Side/West Side Court, was 94 years old.
Mayor Sharon Schauenberg was the emcee and spoke to the theme for the 2024 National Volunteer Appreciation week, “Every Moment Matters”.
Dijkstra added, “The
biggest highlight of the event is seeing everyone mingling, sharing experiences with smiles on their faces. No one was racing out the door and all seemed to embrace the experience. It’s about breaking bread together.”
There was lots of excitement in Assiniboia that
day as the Steetheart concert was taking place later that evening at Southland Co-op Centre.
Those that attended voiced their appreciation for the opportunity to be celebrated, share a meal together and visit with other volunteers in the community.

Two 90-year-old residents are valuable volunteers at Museum
It’s an inspiring tale of heartwarming commitment. Two Assiniboia women in their 90s have continued to dedicate their time to Assiniboia & District Historical Museum. Did you know Assiniboia’s Museum has two recipients of volunteer awards from the province of Saskatchewan? 94- and 91-yearold long-time volunteers at Assiniboia’s Museum, Bernice Woolhouse and Lorraine Silzer were recognized in 2020 for their years of service to this venue in Assiniboia.
Sally Svenson, Assiniboia & District Historical Museum Coordinator, said, “Lorraine Silzer went to the ceremony in Regina in August of 2021. Bernice Woolhouse didn’t attend the ceremony but the Lt. Governor indicated that he would or his office would personally give her the medal. Bernice and her son, Dwaine along with invited guests and families had the medal presented at the Assiniboia Museum.”
Svenson said both Silzer and Woolhouse continue to assist in whatever way they can, which included the 2023 fundraiser with a car show in partnership with the Southern Cruisers Car
Club. Both women have come to see author reading, Margaret G. Hanna, as well as helped do the cups and plates after the event was completed.
They are valuable help in assessing artifacts, writing the news highlights for the Assiniboia Times in addition to being greeters and getting visitors signatures as people come through the museum.
“Bernice and her late husband, John Woolhouse had retired from farming and they would drive to volunteer with others. They would bring a lunch when noon came and have a break with the other volunteers. Bernice has more than three decades with the Assiniboia Museum,” noted Svenson.
Woolhouse keeps active and dedicated to the museum working along many other volunteers throughout the years. She assists with set up and has successfully located and had many artifacts that the museum still uses to this date. She served as a board member for a number along with her commitment to volunteering at the venue.
“Lorraine and her late husband, Paul Silzer, retired and drove into the town and they would also volunteer with others.
Lorraine has between 2530 years or more with the Assiniboia Museum. Lorraine enjoys the company of other volunteers and assisting with greeting visitors, helping with newspaper or any details that needed to be done for an event or a visit from a classroom. Lorraine has assisted with mentoring new volunteers or whichever needed to get done,” added Svenson.
With volunteer appreciation week just wrapped up April 21, Assiniboia’s Museum continues to be grateful for the immense wisdom and continued dedication of these longtime volunteers in keeping Assiniboia’s history alive for all to see.
Both of these dedicated museum volunteers know that from big to small, famous to local, museums give people a place to think, learn, wonder and experience the past and our heritage. Their contributions help preserve and promote Assiniboia’s history.

TIME TO BE KIND, BE COMPASSIONATE
Sabrina Kraft skraft@weyburnreview.com
We all have the capacity to be compassionate, and make an emotional difference in the lives of our friends and family. Mental Health Week, which will be observed May 6 to 12 in 2024, has the theme “A Call to Be Kind: Because Compassion Connects Us All”.
There can be a lot of healing power in simple acts of compassion, as kindness is important to creating healthy and supportive social connections. There is also a focus on self-compassion, and ways to create compassionate classrooms and workplace cultures in your community.
One of the standard social greetings is ‘how are you?’, and we need to take the time to focus on the responses of our friends and neighbours. So many people respond ‘I am fine’ to this question, when in truth they are not feeling okay. There is often a worry that your troubles are too personal to share, or that you would not find someone to talk to, and so it becomes easier to fake a smile.
‘I am fine’ is a response to flit past how a person is actually feeling and turn the conversation onto something else. There is still social anxiety and doubt when it comes to being open and honest about our mental health, even when it comes to having day-to-day conversations.
How many of us have a confidante that we trust? How many of us feel comfortable having mental health conversations in our workplace? We spend so much time bottling up our emotions instead of expressing them, and so much energy trying to appeal to a standard of ‘being fine’ that is an unrealistic goal for anyone.
Of course, timing is important to when it comes to sharing your emotional state. It does take a lot of
emotional intelligence to recognize the many emotions that we experience in life, and allowing ourselves to express those emotions is important to our mental heatlh.
I am not saying we should share intense emotions with strangers in the grocery aisle, but perhaps we should change the typical greeting - so that when people ask ‘how are you’, they are expressing their desire to truly know the answer, and take time to have compassion for another.
There are many ways to show your kindness in the community too. We are fortunate to have many community events and programs that are inclusive, and there are even a few Facebook groups that offer a ‘Helping Hand’ to those who are struggling in their lives. Recently, a group of kind and supportive people in Weyburn hosted a community potluck, and by working together this group showed their compassion to many local residents.
One could contact a long-term care home, or seniors home, and ask if there are volunteer reading programs available. There can be a sense of loneliness for people in those settings, since many do not have visitors, and there might be a chance to spread some kindness in a simple way.
It is important to make real connections, and find ways to be a support to the people in your life. Also remember to take time for yourself, and not spread your kindness out too much, otherwise you will feel unacknowledged and might experience a bit of burn-out. Sometimes you just need to step back from your volunteer efforts, and wait until you have a renewed passion.
Compassion is a natural activity, and taking moments for others can help strengthen our community, and open up new opportunities for social connections.
Nearly $650,000 in additional funding approved through teacher innovation and support fund
Another 17 teacher-led projects have been approved for funding through the Teacher Innovation and Support Fund, totaling $647,900.
This third round of funding means over $1.5 million has now been allocated through the Fund to schools and communities across the province to date.
“I am impressed by the creativity and planning of the many projects that continue to be submitted by Saskatchewan teachers,” said Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill. “Our government’s commitment to providing these additional classroom supports has been met with equally impressive and innovative project ideas.”
The approved projects in this round include an outdoor classroom space, renovations to sensory rooms and learning through podcasting.
In January 2024, the Teacher Innovation and Support Fund was
announced, offering $2.5 million in funding to assist in areas such as academics, teacher practice and science and technology. Teachers work with their school administration to apply for up to $75,000 to put toward innovative projects. In January $410,649 was awarded for the first nine projects, followed by an additional $452,206 in March for 15 more projects.
Future project approvals will be announced in the coming months.
Funding for this pilot is part of the $356.6 million for classroom supports, an increase of $45.6 million or 14.7 per cent, over the previous year, as announced in the 2024-25 provincial budget.

Art created by students at the Assiniboia Composite High School will be on display at the Assiniboia and District Public Library. This event is sponsored by the Assiniboia and District Arts Council.
Teacher Raine Gray explained, “My Studio Art 20 class completed a research project on an Indigenous artist and then
either recreated one of that artist’s pieces or followed their style to make something of their own.”
Jiya Italia was inspired by Ontario Indigenous artist Betty Albert. “I combined two pictures of hers into mine. The woman in the painting symbolizes power.” Jiya moved to Saskatchewan from India nine months

ago. Creating art is her hobby. Her family was very proud that her picture was selected for the Arts Up poster on display around town.
Preston Ruzicka thought his Star Wars inspired drawing was too big at first and it took quite a long time to finish it, but viewers will appreciate the effort he put into the final
product. “Studio Art is a nice class,” he said, “compared to math for instance. I can be more creative versus having to do everything by the book.”
This exhibit is on display until April 30 as part of the Arts Up partnership between the Assiniboia and District Arts Council and the Assiniboia and District Public Library.

Karen Warken
Karen Warken (Kornum) passed away March 27, 2024 at age 92. Predeceased by her husband Philip (Nov 1992), and daughter Vivian Lefebvre (2003), siblings Benjamin, Verona, Louris and Keith, Karen is survived by children Deborah (Brian) Scheltgen of Lafleche, Myles (Deborah) of Medicine Hat, son-in-law Gilles Lefebvre of Edmonton, nine grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren, one great-great-grandson, sisters Shirley and Christine. Mom was born June 12, 1931 to Chris and Alice Kornum on the family farm southwest of Fife Lake. She attended Goose Creek (country) School until Grade 8. She finished Grade 10 by correspondence. Mom often spoke about the dry years, which were hard on everyone. Through the efforts of her parents, they were always “well-fed, clean and mended and very much loved”. Leaving home at the age of 16, Mom moved to Lethbridge for a job at the hospital. Two years later, she returned home to Fife Lake. Country dances were always popular and Mom loved to dance. This is how she met our Dad, Philip Warken, who she married in 1949 at Ceylon, SK. Mom and Dad established and lived on their family farm near Coronach until Dad’s health deteriorated and they sold and moved to Assiniboia in 1960. Mom was a determined, independent and hard-working woman. From an early age, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, singing with her sisters while their Dad accompanied them on the fiddle. It was her passion for cooking that sent her on a new career path as our parents became involved in the restaurant business for many years. Mom was famous for her cinnamon buns and ice cream. Mom was a force of nature with love and positivity that consumed those around her. She was giving to a fault and never afraid to share her opinion with her loved ones. Most of all, Mom cherished her time with family and friends. Mom’s final years were spent in the care of the amazing staff at Ross Payant Long Term Care. Our family would like to thank them and Dr. Carulei for all their care and attention. Loved, ALWAYS AND FOREVER . . . Mom & Grandma.
A Celebration of Karen’s life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the upstairs curling rink lounge of the Prince of Wales Cultural Centre, Assiniboia, SK. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for the Warken family may be shared at www.rossfuneralservice.com. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.

Balance issues can pose a serious threat to seniors
Balance issues can pose a serious threat to individual health. When a person experiences issues with their balance, they may experience dizziness, lightheadedness and feel as if a room is spinning. Each of those factors can increase the risk for potentially harmful falls.
A number of variables can contribute to balance problems, including medications, health conditions like heart disease and vision problems, and alcohol consumption. The remedy to balance issues may depend on what’s causing them, though some exercises that require individuals to move their heads and bodies in a certain way can help treat some balance disorders. A physical therapist or another professional with an understanding of the relationship between balance and
various systems in the body also may be able to help. When a specific cause, such as hypertension or low blood pressure, is identified, health care teams may be able to recommend various approaches to help seniors get their balance back.
Hypertension: also known as high blood pressure, can negatively affect balance. The study found that this occurs because hypertension damages the large arteries and decreases microcirculation in specific functional areas, ultimately resulting in impairment that reduces a person’s ability to maintain a stable posture. Taking steps to address hypertension, such as eating less sodium, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly, may also lead to a reduction in balance
problems related to the condition.
Low blood pressure: Low blood pressure also can contribute to balance problems. Sudden low blood pressure, which is also referred to as orthostatic hypotension, can manifest when sitting up and standing up. When it does, a person may experience dizziness or lightheadedness, which may last just a few seconds or several minutes. Dizziness related to low blood pressure also may appear within one to three minutes of sitting up or standing up, which means individuals may be vulnerable to falls even when they initially feel fine after sitting up or standing up. Individuals with low blood pressure can manage the issue by drinking plenty of fluids, including water, and avoiding alcohol.

Assiniboia honoured at SUMA
The Civic Improvement Association from the Town of Assiniboia received the Top Urban Municipal Initative Award during the SUMA convention.
SUMA highlights John Cairns SASKTODAY.ca
The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association convention is over for 2024, and the general reaction has been positive from the leaders attending in Regina from urban municipalities.
That is what Randy Goulden, President of SUMA and a Yorkton councillor, indicated to reporters last week.
“They’re very very pleased with the discussion they’ve had, the engagement they’ve had with SUMA with our Board of Directors but also with provincial government and the leaders that have taken time to come and have those discussions with them. Many many times, those leaders don’t get those opportunities. Perhaps I’ve been more fortunate with my role, but I do have those opportunities but it’s so good to see provincial government here and answering the
questions to some of the decisions they might’ve made — but also to understand what the needs are in our communities. So we are very pleased with the last four days.”
The convention included addresses from Premier Scott Moe and Minister of Government Relations Don McMorris, as well as dialogue sessions and the final Bear Pit session with cabinet ministers on April 17.
There was also a strong Opposition presence during the week as NDP Leader Carla Beck gave her address on April 16.
As for the top issues spoken about most by the delegates from the various cities, towns and villages from across Saskatchewan at the convention, Goulden pointed to three.
“The first one I would say is infrastructure. And I think you’ve heard of that come clear in the Bear Pit, clear with the dialogue with ministers. Our residents expect when they are living in our urban communities — it . does not matter whether is urban communities, or what size — they expect clean drinking water, they expect wastewater to be looked

after, the drainage looked after. Then we have quality of life facilities like rinks, and pools, and so no matter where I go around this province that’s what I hear.
“The other, and you’ve heard it here quite clearly too, is mental health and addiction. That is not a responsibility of our urban communities. That is not in any Acts, that is not in any responsibility for you. But this is happening in our communities. So we need to work with our provincial government and our federal government to provide the very best places they can live.
“And the third --- public safety. We’ve heard that, and we thank the ministers that came to the dialogue and through these past few days, and certainly there is concern around the number of officers in our communities, and some of the decreases that we’ve seen. We have great distances between detachment that are patrolling our small urban communities, so that was definitely one. And some of that related to around mental health and addictions too, because we know that not everyone is ready for treatment. We are encouraged and we appreciate what is being done for those additional treatment beds in our province, but those that aren’t ready for that, they’re staying in there living on the streets and near our businesses and near homes and schools. So that was also a concern.”
Goulden pointed in particular for the need for infrastructure for growth and to increase the economy.
“Our communities are working very very well at understanding their asset management and what’s next on the list, and what’s critical. And I have to say that although I can speak for my community, I can speak for communities across the province in saying there’s a great deal of need, and we have to start working even harder -- because we have been working -- but even harder with the provincial and the federal governments.”
