High emotions force a break in historic McLeod Series

The Weyburn Comprehensive School, along with the Estevan Comp, have announced they will be taking a break from the historic McLeod Basketball Series this year, due to high emotions and threatening behaviour during and after games.

In a statement released on the school’s Facebook page and social media, they said, “The McLeod Basketball Series is a fourgame total point basketball series between basketball teams from Weyburn Comprehensive School and Estevan Comprehensive School. The event started in 1932 and since then, the games have been played with a few breaks over the years.

“The McLeod Basketball Series has been very competitive throughout the years as basketball has evolved with the growth of our province and its schools. Due to the highly competitive nature of sport in our country, province and schools, fan expectations and codes of conduct have been put in place to ensure that players, coaches, and fans have a positive and safe competitive experience at all school athletic events.

“In some situations, emotions have run high and harassment and threatening behavior directed to both players and coaches during the game and after the game, both in the school and extending beyond the school grounds has occurred.

“As such, the decision has been made to take a break from the McLeod Series play this year to allow fans, players, and coaches to review and reflect on participant expectations and codes of conduct. We hope that this series break will support all participants in being active and positive spectators at future school series events.”

Wheat Kings win two games over weekend

The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings recorded two wins over the weekend, as they defeated the Wawota Flyers 4-1 on Saturday, and the Midale Mustangs 9-6 on Sunday afternoon, both on home ice.

In Saturday night’s matchup, Yellow Grass went up 3-0 in the first period on unassisted goals by Zach Douglas and two by Dylan Frey.

There was no scoring in the second period, then Wawota scored in the third period. Conor Lafoy scored an unassisted goal to wrap up the scoring for the Wheat Kings.

In Sunday’s game, Yellow Grass again went up 3-0 then Midale scored on the power play to end the first period 4-1.

The Wheat Kings goals came from Kyle Mryglod, assisted by Lafoy and Luke Arndt; Luke Niemegeers, unassisted; and Lafoy from Niemegeers and Douglas.

The girls struggled Saturday to break full court presses, losing to Foam Lake 40-26 and the tournament champions Indian Head.

Both teams travel to Foam Lake this upcoming weekend for a tournament, and then they are back home hosting another combined tournament on the Feb. 10-11 weekend. No other WCS teams played this weekend due to final exams at the Comp. Coming up this weekend, the Eagles senior boys are going to Estevan, the senior girls will be going to North Battleford, and the intermediate boys will be playing in Moose Jaw.

Midale came within a goal when Tomiski scored in the second period, assisted by Logan King, then Burke Johnstone scored for the Wheat Kings, assisted by Braden Mellon.

Johnstone scored again, assisted by Drew Fellner and Mellon, then in third period, Mellon scored unassisted, followed by Douglas (shorthanded) and Arndt, both unassisted.

Matt Geske then scored for the Mustangs, assisted by Khenan Colbow and Martinson, and Martinson scored on the power play, assisted by Oliver and Tomiski. Geske scored again, assisted by Braxton Dukart and Terrzn Holzer, and King scored on the power play, assisted by Martinson and Holzer, bringing them within two of Yellow Grass.

Mryglod scored for Yellow Grass with five seconds left in the game to make it 9-6.

Both Midale and Yellow Grass have a busy schedule coming up this week and weekend. The Mustangs will be in Bienfait tonight, Feb. 1, to play the Coalers, then they host the Combines on Friday, Feb. 3, and visit Carlyle to play the Cougars on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Meantime, the Combines visit Yellow Grass on Thursday, Feb. 2, then the Wheat Kings travel to Redvers to play the Rockets on Feb. 4. The Huskies will then visit Yellow Grass to play the Wheat Kings on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.

Arts Council to hold info meeting on Culture Days on February 15

The Weyburn Arts Council is holding a public information meeting about the Culture Days event to be held this fall.

Culture Days is held from Sept. 22 to Oct. 15 all across Canada. Join thousands of creators and event organizers for a celebration of arts, culture and creative expression.

The arts council is looking for community-minded individuals who would be interested in helping make this year the best Culture Days yet. The meeting is set for Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Credit Union Spark Centre, where people can hear more information and learn how to become involved. “It’s an information night where people can find out more about the event. I will share examples of past Culture Days events, and avenues of involvement,” said Regan Lanning, curator for the Arts Council. “Culture days is very much a community-shaped event. My role is to facilitate the involvement of community groups and members in whatever way they are interested in and comfortable with,” she added.

Demonstrating carving on a clay surface

Instructor Regan Lanning demonstrated carving design into a clay surface as part of a class on decorative clay on Friday evening. This class was an introduction to sgraffito, which is a technique done on unfired, nearly dry clay where underglaze is scraped away to reveal the design. The students here are Lorena Squires and Patty Clampitt.

Weyburn Chamber to present speaker on ‘Women Building Futures’

The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce will present a “Handshakes and Hashbrowns” breakfast on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 a.m. at the Weyburn Legion, featuring a speaker from Women Building Futures.

According to Statistics Canada, only about five per cent of skilled trades workers are women. Becky Cassidy, Strategic Partnerships Lead with Women Building Futures, will give the presentation to the Chamber breakfast on how to help that statistic grow.

Through the Women Building Futures program, the mission is to empower women’s economic prosperity by removing barriers and providing industry recognized training in the construction trades, maintenance, transportation industries and more. Over the last 20 years, the organization has been able to train and graduate approximately 2,500 women through various programs such as Journeywoman Start, Professional Class 1 Driver, Driver and Operator, and industry-funded programs.

The Chamber breakfasts are usually an in-person event, but the chamber decided to do a hybrid event. Registration will be required even if members plan on attending virtually. Register by going online to the Chamber’s website, or calling the office at 306842-4738.

The cost to attend is $16 for chamber members, and $20 for non-members.

The breakfast event is being sponsored by the Weyburn Oilwomen Association.
