CHOOSING THE RIGHT STUDY PROGRAMME FOR YOU
There are several types of degree and higher education programmes available here at Weymouth College – you’ll find details below: FOUNDATION DEGREES are modern qualifications designed to increase access to and widen participation in higher education and are one of the quickest and most convenient routes, particularly for students who prefer to study locally. Foundation Degrees allow students to undertake work-based learning throughout their study programme.
On successful completion of your Foundation Degree, you can apply for a further year of study to top up your qualification to an HONOURS DEGREE (subject to deadline dates and availability of places at your chosen university). Most Foundation Degrees will have designated Top Ups – you will find full details in the course student handbooks. All students enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Professional Studies (Health and Community) top-up are able to complete the full Honours degree at Weymouth College.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES (HNC) AND HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMAS (HND) are work-related (vocational) higher education qualifications. Highly valued by employers both in the UK and overseas, they can count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations. HNCs take one year to complete full-time (two years part-time). HNDs take two years to complete full-time and can also be taken part-time (which takes longer). On successful completion of your HND, you may be able to apply for a further year of study to top up your qualification to an HONOURS DEGREE (subject to deadline dates and availability of places at your chosen university). ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION normally acts as entry onto the first year of an Honours Degree or Foundation Degree course. This is a one year, two day a week course, nationally validated through AIM Awards. This programme is designed for students aged 19+ to gain entry to higher education across a range of subjects. If you would like further information on which programme is right for you please contact our HE Team.

FEES AND FUNDING
www.weymouth.ac.uk
UK National Students studying on a higher education course for the first time are entitled to government support for tuition fees and living costs (maintenance loan). Government guidance and regulations are subject to change annually so you are advised to use the Student Finance Calculator www.gov.uk/student-finance-calculator to estimate your loans. You’ll need to re-apply for the loans each year of study.
TUITION FEE LOAN Full and part-time UK undergraduate students may take out a loan to cover the cost of their annual tuition fee. The tuition fee loan is paid direct to the College by the Student Loans Company. Our current full-time BSc (Hons) and Foundation Degree fees are £6650 and our HND fees are £5750 per year for Home/EU students compared to £9000+ payable at most universities.
If you’re a full-time student, you can apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with living expenses. The loan is paid into your bank account in three instalments in October, January and April. Please note: Maintenance Loans for part-time HNC courses are not currently available. Your parents (if you are under 25) or partner will need to provide details of their income, either online or on paper. However, If you’re an independent student, Student Finance won’t take your parents’ income into account when working out how much student finance you can get. We therefore recommend you apply early, as the assessment of household income can take some time to complete.

Additionally, students will be expected to undertake work experience within the sector, reflecting upon their existing and developing skills and qualities within their modules to fully enhance their personal learning journey. The qualification content is dynamic and responsive to trends in the health and social care sector, ensuring student knowledge and experiences are contemporary and relevant. The programme endeavours to have small group sizes, allowing a personal approach to tuition. The flexible delivery of the programme enables students to work and learn at the same time.
