eddie mullins takes living off the grid to a whole new level with his with his feature debut Doomsdays, a self-proclaimed Ò pre-apocalyptic comedy,Ó starring

Justin Rice and Leo Fitzpatrick as low-budget vandals with little regard for the law. Dirty Fred and Bruho are a tag team of criminal house-hoppers who find themselves with more than they bargained for when a disenchanted teenager and indignant young woman join them in their shenanigans. The newcomers unintentionally reveal to Fred and Bruho that the feeling of family doesn’t necessitate a home and the feeling of home doesn’t necessitate settling, but that both can be found within the company you keep. Freeloading through high-end vacation homes forces the group to acknowledge feelings and morals that they otherwise would have never recognized. Perhaps most importantly, Fred and Bruno come to recognize that isolating themselves from the death-grip of society does little in the face of compassion and companionship, two values in our troubled world that are well worth keeping. – Chandra Knotts

Randy moore was born in Lake Bluff, Illinois, a small town known for its famous

Randy studied filmmaking at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Columbia College Chicago and Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL, where he graduated valedictorian. Over the years he has worked as a story editor in Los Angeles and has been honored with such awards as the Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting (quarter-finalist), Fade In magazine’s script award (2nd place) and Writemovies.com (Grand Prize). Escape from Tomorrow is his first feature film.

arie posin is an Israeli-born American film director and screenwriter, son of a

BIO Russian dissident filmmaker father and screenwriter mother, and a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He wrote and directed the award-winning short Over My Dead Body, followed by the feature-length film The Chumscrubber, which premiered in 2005 at the Sundance Film Festival and later took Posin to the Moscow International Film Festival, giving him the chance to connect to his roots and also win the Audience Award for Best Film. Since then, Posin has been developing screenplays, both on his own and in collaboration with other writers, and pursuing work as a commercial director. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and five-year-old daughter.

John sayles likes to be known as a storyteller. Go For Sisters is his 18th film, all

novel A Moment in the Sun (published by McSweeney’s in May 2011) has gone into its second printing and his book about the making of Matewan, Thinking in Pictures is taught in film classes and has never been out of print. Sayles supports his directing career as a “writer for hire” in Hollywood. He has most recently written about KGB assassins, the Tasmanian penal colony, the Rosenberg spy case, the great singer-songwriters Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Carly Simon, and a famous American brewing dynasty. He directed three music videos for Bruce Springsteen; Born in the USA, I’m on Fire and Glory Days. He is one of the godfathers, or grandfathers, of the US independent film movement. He lives with his producing partner of many years, Maggie Renzi, in upstate New York. With a budget well under a million dollars and four weeks to shoot, Go For Sisters is a return to the guerrilla style of filmmaking familiar to Sayles from his early 80’s films Return of the Secaucus Seven, Lianna and Brother from Another Planet.

Chris eska was raised in the village of Ottine, Texas (pop. 98). He studied

Cuneyt kaya was born in 1980 in Berlin, where he still lives and works today.

BIO After his A levels, he studied mathematics at the Freie Universität Berlin before he eventually turned to filmmaking. Between 2004 and 2006, he made several documentaries on behalf of the European Union about refugees in Europe. He researched in England, Poland, Italy and Spain and shot together with local filmmakers over several months. In 2005, he launched his own film production company, All Ahead Film, with integrated equipment rental. To this day, it is one of the leading RED camera suppliers in Berlin. In 2009 and 2010, he worked with Hans Weingartner on the film Die Summe Meiner Einzeinen Teile as writer and codirector. Ummah is his feature film debut as a director.

a seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to

Jim mickle was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and graduated from NYU’s

Jim’s critically acclaimed second feature, Stake Land (WFF 2010), drew on the post-apocalyptic frenzy described by Richard Matheson (author of the novel I Am Legend) and George Romero. Stake Land won the People’s Choice Award in the Midnight Madness Section of the 2010 TIFF and was distributed by IFC Films. Jim’s first feature, Mulberry Street, earned acclaim for its atmospheric representation of a deadly virus in Manhattan that turns people into rat-like creatures, and earned the “Best Independent Feature” award at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. Jim first toured the festival circuit with The Underdogs (WFF 2004), where he started his relationship with Nick Damici, co-writer and actor on all of Jim’s features, including We Are What We Are. With three features under his belt, each one more mature than the last, Jim’s career trajectory has been hailed by horror aficionados as a genre master crossing over into mainstream appeal.

The film cuts between past and present as the filmmakers explore what is left of their alternative childhood, bridging gaps between their adult metropolitan lifestyles and their off-thegrid rearing. American Commune reveals the rise and fall of The Farm, a 1970s commune that created what appeared to be the ideal self-sufficient community. Members shared everything from child rearing and communal households, to currency, clothing and food. Through unapologetic storytelling and a hint of nostalgia, the Mundo sisters tap into the alternate universe of their pasts and bring to light the undying legacy of true community. What constitutes revolution?

98-year-old writer and radical activist Grace Lee Boggs has no hesitations when it comes to changing the world, one conversation at a time. Filmmaker Grace Lee initially sought out Grace Lee Boggs due to their shared name and unexpectedly found a breath of rebellious inspiration in Boggs that continues to motivate nonviolent philosophies of civil rights growth, revolution and evolution. Once a 1960’s militant, the Detroit-based activist Boggs is still challenging expectations through her lifelong devotion to the African-American movement and fight for individual freedoms. ‘The time has come for a new dream,’ Boggs says, relying on the ever-evolving artistry of conversation to fuel the fire of revolution. Festival. Prior to that, she wrote and directed American Zombie, which premiered at Slamdance and SXSW before being released by Cinema Libre. She also produced and directed The Grace Lee Project, a feature documentary that was broadcast on Sundance Channel and is distributed by Women Make Movies. Grace received her MFA in Directing from UCLA Film School, where her thesis film, Barrier Device, won a Student Academy Award® and Directors Guild of America award. She is the recipient of the Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Digital Media, a Rockefeller Media Arts grant, as well as funding from the Center for Asian American Media, Chicken and Egg Pictures and the Ford Foundation. She is currently producing and directing a documentary for PBS about Asian-American food culture.

18. She had to represent her country in the Miss World competition only six weeks later. When, to her shock, she was crowned the winner, she vowed to do something about rape. The film follows her from the rape, to her crowning and through her crusade to fight for justice and break the silence. During her travels to speak out and meet with other rape victims, her own trauma begins to resurface. Her serial rapist becomes eligible for parole and she has to hunt down his previous victims in order to help keep him behind bars. The film explores the trauma of sexual assault through one young woman’s journey from teenage rape victim to Miss World to empowered lawyer and activist.

Cecilia produced A Conversation with Gregory Peck, an intimate portrait of her father, which premiered as a Special Selection at the Cannes Film Festival. She directed and produced Justice For All, an examination of capital punishment, was producer on The Hamptons 4 hour mini-series for ABC, and associate producer on Defending Our Daughters for Lifetime. haskell Wexler began his feature filmmaking career as a cinematographer in the late 1950s,

as a cinematographer on films such as American Graffiti, Bound for Glory, Matewan, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Wexler has also produced, written, directed and/or photographed a number of documentary films. Among the highlights are The Bus and its sequel, Bus II, the Oscar-winning short Interviews With My Lai Veterans, Brazil: A Report on Torture (1971), Introduction to the Enemy, co-directed with Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden and Bill Yahrans, CIA: Case Officer, and At the Max, which recorded the 1990 European tour of the Rolling Stones. In 1969, Wexler produced, directed, wrote and photographed one of the most devastating and technically sophisticated anti-establishment films ever made, Medium Cool. Set and filmed during the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, the film chronicles, in striking, neo-documentary style, the affairs, both professional and amorous, of a detached TV news cameraman as he becomes increasingly aware of the political ramifications of his work. In addition to these honors, Mr. Wexler has received numerous other accolades, including The American Society of Cinematographers’ Lifetime Achievement Award, an Independent Spirit Award (Matewan), an Emmy nomination (Outstanding Cinematography for 61*), and a Star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. After wrapping up his first feature-length documentary I Am a Visitor in Your World, Miguel started pre-production for his new project currently titled Devil’s Work. The film, a follow up to his 2010 film Rooftop Wars, is a study of war in the minds of children in America. Devil’s Work received the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation production grant and will be his thesis at Columbia University. Miguel teaches in institutions such as Columbia College Chicago and EICTV in San Antonio de Los Banos, Cuba. shawney Cohen is a Toronto-based filmmaker who also manages his father’s strip

The Manor is Shawney’s feature directing debut and was selected as the official opening night film at the 20th anniversary edition of Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary film festival. In a small town that seems to have been forgotten, directors Andrew Cohn and Davy

Rothbart explore the convoluted lives of the Medora Hornets varsity basketball team. The dynamic of the run-down, struggling town of Medora, Indiana, directly reflects the disadvantage that its high school basketball team faces each year. The Hornets a small force stemming from a school of only 72 students, often find themselves competing against consolidated schools up to twenty times their size. A once-flourishing community teeming with employment opportunities, the termination of surrounding factories and the flooding of farms has stripped Medora of almost all economic value. The film provides insight into the broken, conflicted homes that pervade the dwindling town and the imminant death of small-town America. The intimate relationship that forms between the players and the audience creates a moving and exciting documentary, as we follow Medora’s bittersweet basketball season as they look to create their own Hoosier dreams. – Nina Gioia

ential jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who suddenly rejected fame and ‘the jazz life’ to play alone high above the traffic on the Williamsburg Bridge in New York. Back then the film followed him on his lonely journey to find out why. What was he searching for? Now 43 years later, in the context of his historic 80th birthday concert and with the help of other jazz legends, including Ornette Coleman, who Sonny invited to celebrate the history of his music with him, Beyond the Notes follows Rollins extraordinary journey, still refusing stereotype and compromise and still searching for answers to his music and his life.

Dick fontaine is the managing and creative director at BeBop Productions. He

BIO has made over 40 films for television and theatrical release. His work is characterized by a strong desire to push the boundaries of documentary form, in particular. Fontaine’s journalistic background and early experience with cinema verité are at the core of his vibrant story telling. His love for the crafts of jazz and filmmaking, as well as his long-lasting friendship with jazz maestro Sonny Rollins, resulted in the production of Sonny Rollins: Beyond the Notes, co-produced by BBC Arena and nominated for a Grierson Award. In 2013, In-Edit Brazil held a retrospective of Dick’s music films. In 2012, Cinema du Reel Paris held a retrospective of Dick’s work. The Anthropology Film Archives in New York held one in 2011. Since 1995, Dick Fontaine has run the Documentary Department at the postgraduate National Film and Television School in the UK.

state of Control is a firsthand account of the global technological arms race between

the voices of dissent and the power of the state. Can the struggle for basic human rights survive in the global media age? Technology enables dissenters while also extending state repression beyond any physical borders. In the months leading up to the Beijing Olympics, Tibetan rights activists were determined to make their voices heard to the international community. Filmmakers Christian Johnston and Darren Mann traveled to India, Nepal, China and Tibet intending to shoot a documentary about regional unrest. With their efforts thwarted by constant surveillance by the Chinese government, the filmmakers turned their cameras on themselves and their harassers. State of Control is a chilling depiction of both the ham-handed and high-tech methods of a 21st century police state. –Eliza Kunkel

Christian Johnston is an award-winning director, producer, writer, and the

BIO founder of Complex Films. His resume is comprised of many notable projects such as September Tapes, MTV True Life: Trial by Fire and Blackline: The Beirut Contract. Johnston has extensive filmmaking experience in active war zones, including the first western film shot in Lebanon in 35 years. September Tapes was filmed in Afghanistan just six months after 9-11. Johnston is currently producing The Three Hikers, about the three American bikers recently freed from prison in Iran. Darren mann is an award-winning, Emmy-nominated director, producer and the founder of Mann-made Pictures. He edited the 2004 Sundance and Cannes Film Festival hit September Tape, directed and produced the documentary American Sumo, produced An Ox’s Tale (about the legendary rock band The Who) and directed the feature film FightF*ckPray. He most recently shot and edited Becoming Barack, a documentary on President Obama’s years as a community developer in Chicago. Darren has also directed and produced hundreds of hours of broadcast television for National Geographic, Discovery, FOX, VH-1 Spike and ESPN, to name a few. His company, Mann-made Pictures, recently produced a ten-episode, animal-conservation series called Uncaged, airing on Nat Geo International.

David coordinated the restoration and Criterion Collection DVD release of Barbara Kopple’s landmark documentary Harlan County USA. town hall casts an unflinching eye on Katy and John, two Tea Party activists from the battleground state of pennsylvania during the 2012 presidential election,

who believe America’s salvation lies in a return to true conservative values. In Katy, we see a political novice rocketed to media stardom after a sensational confrontation at a town hall meeting with her senator. A young stay-at-home mom turned Tea Party spokesperson, she is gifted a new identity, steeled by the voices of conservative media. For John, a retired former businessman and lifelong Republican, the America he knows is slipping away. Heading up a local Tea Party group is his last, best chance at stanching the changes he is witnessing all around him. More than a political treatise, Town Hall immerses the viewer in Katy and John’s world, painting a portrait of the fears of those who believe they will be left behind by a nation’s transition. A candid discussion of one of this year’s most controversial films, exploring its highly unusual provenance as well its unique marketing and distribution approaches. Escape from Tomorrow was filmed on location at Walt Disney World and Disneyland without permission from the Walt Disney Company, which owns and operates both parks. Since Disney has a reputation for being fiercely protective of its intellectual property, filmmaker Randy Moore employed guerrilla techniques to avoid attracting attention, such as keeping scripts on iPhones and shooting on handheld video cameras similar to those used by park visitors. Moore was so determined to keep the project a secret from Disney that he edited it in South Korea.

Panelists: Joe Berlinger, is an Academy Award®nominated and two-time Emmy and Peabody winner Joe has been a leading voice in nonfiction film and television for two decades. Films include the landmark documentaries Brother’s Keeper, Paradise Lost and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, a film that re-defined the rockumentary genre. His Amazon oil pollution exposé, Crude, recently triggered a high-profile First Amendment battle with Chevron. His Emmy-winning Paradise Lost Trilogy for HBO spawned a worldwide movement to free The West Memphis Three from wrongful murder convictions, resulting in the three men walking out of prison in 2011 after 18 years of wrongful incarceration. Judith Helfland is known for her ability to take the dark worlds of chemical exposure, heedless corporate behavior and environmental injustice and make them personal, highly-charged and entertaining. Her crowd-pleasing toxic comedies Blue Vinyl (co-directed with Daniel B. Co-founder and co-president of Moxie Firecracker Films, Garbus’ films have won awards worldwide, including multiple Academy Award® nominations and Emmy Award wins. Garbus’ latest film, Love, Marilyn, featuring the never-before-seen writings of Marilyn Monroe, internationally opened as a Gala Premiere at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and aired on HBO summer of 2013. Barbara Kopple is a two-time Academy Award®- winning filmmaker. A director of documentaries, as well as narrative TV and film, her most recent project is the documentary Running from Crazy, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
