INTRODUCTION WELCOME TO THE 18TH ANNUAL WOODSTOCK FILM FESTIVAL

As I think of the number 18 — when a child becomes an adult (and can vote); when, in Judaism, 18 means life — and realize that this is how many years the Woodstock Film Festival has been in existence, I can’t help but feel a bit amazed, and a bit dazed. When the festival first began, driven by the genuine love for the art of film, the support of independent filmmakers, and the familiar pull of the creative and engaged community that it served, who would have thought it would turn into a hub where so many talented, creative voices from throughout the world would gather year after year, inspiring each other and countless more around them. I did not see that far into the future, yet here we are. Eighteen years old! Mature enough to truly declare our independence; mature enough to take our place in the world. 2017 has brought a new awareness to this country and has been a wake-up call to many that we can and must all have a voice in our destiny. As we reach the fall and enter the 18th year of the Woodstock Film Festival, I pause to reflect upon the years that have gone by, the changes in our world and the distance we as people and as filmmakers have traveled during that time. In that frame of mind, the Woodstock Film Festival welcomes everyone to the place where ideas are born and nurtured, and where the visions of innovative thinkers, artists and explorers abound. As the festival begins, please join me in welcoming the hundreds of filmmakers and artists who have traveled here from near and far for five magical days of cinematic celebration. Join me also in welcoming the thousands of audience members who make it possible for the independent film industry to thrive and shine a light on our world.

I invite you all to come to the movies, panels and parties, visit the local galleries, shops, restaurants, artists’ studios and recording studios, enjoy the creeks and lakes, mountains and fields. The outstanding array of films is complemented by first-rate panels and special talks: intimate chats with our Maverick Award honoree Susan Sarandon; Shep Gordon, honorary Trailblazer Award recipient; Bill Pullman, Excellence in Acting Award, and the hugely talented and accomplished director Rebecca Miller. And no Woodstock Film Festival would be complete without music. This year, we open the festival with an operatic short and live opera performance, followed by Stuck, a “musical for modern times,” and a performance by Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Young and Gerard Canonico. Music also features largely in several other films, including Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me, Becks and 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Band.

We are thrilled to bring you all of this and so much more, not only in the colony of the arts of Woodstock, but also in the neighboring towns of Rhinebeck, Rosendale, Kingston, and Saugerties. This is a region-wide celebration and event. Before I sign off and wish you all a happy festival, I want to thank the countless individuals, organizations and companies who support us and make this festival happen. JONATHAN DEMME: Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme was among the brightest of lights in American cinema, often alternating from fiction (Beloved) to documentary (Jimmy Carter Man From Plains), and from comedic and colorful (Something Wild) to challenging and dramatic (Silence Of The Lambs) . A generous and passionate, brilliant and inspiring man, Jonathan was an important part of the Woodstock Film Festival’s community. He attended the Woodstock Film Festival a number of times, speaking on panels and at Q&As after screenings. In 2012, the festival honored Jonathan with the Maverick Award, presented to him by his long time friend and colleague, film producer Peter Saraf. In 2000, at the inaugural Woodstock Film Festival, Saraf had helped organize a screening of one of Jonathan’s seminal films, Stop Making Sense, with all the seats removed so the audience could dance. The festival also showed Jonathan’s documentary The Agronomist twice, to standing ovations: once at the festival in Woodstock and once in NYC, where the festival’s executive director Meira Blaustein hosted the post screening Q&A with Jonathan, Danny Glover and others.

Jonathan was always personable, kind, funny, and so very talented. His pioneering films, such as Philadelphia, written by Ron Nyswaner, truly changed the world, proving what Jonathan once said: “a film by one person can make a difference.” This year, the world lost a great filmmaker and a very special human being. Jonathan passed away on April 26, 2017. May he rest in peace and may his memory continue to shine a bright light and inspire us all. Audience at Woodtock Play House

The Woodstock Film Festival celebrates emerging and established voices in independent film with screenings, panels and concerts throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley. The festival is centered in the historic arts colony of Woodstock, as well as the nearby towns of Rhinebeck, Rosendale, Boiceville, Saugerties, and Kingston.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMMING The Woodstock Film Festival, and the Hudson Valley Film Commission work year round, offering screenings, mixers, economic development initiatives, and special events in the Hudson Valley, New York City and elsewhere. Our year-round programming featured six special screenings, our yearly Taste of Woodstock and Spirit of Woodstock events, a benefit concert, and our annual Launch Party. In April, the Woodstock Film Festival hosted a special free screening of The Promise to a full house, followed by an in-depth conversation with producer Bill Horberg. The Promise Special Screening

As a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, Woodstock Film Festival’s mission is to present an annual program and year-round schedule of film, music and art-related activities that promote artists and culture and inspired learning and diversity. Its sister organization, the Hudson Valley Film Commission, promotes sustainable economic development by attracting and supporting film, video and media production. Every fall, film and music lovers from around the world gather in Woodstock for an exhilarating variety of films, concerts, celebrity-led seminars, workshops, an awards ceremony, and superlative parties. Visitors find themselves in a relaxed, receptive atmosphere surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The range of films presented includes feature narratives, documentaries and shorts, many of which are premieres from the U.S and abroad. Filmmakers often attend and follow up screenings with Q&As. In May, the Woodstock Film Festival hosted the 5th Annual Taste of Woodstock, celebrating the culinary diversity and delicacies that the region has to offer. Over 20 restaurants and hosts participated, including A&P Bar, Bistro-To-Go, Bread Alone, Calmbucha, Catskill Mountain Pizza, Colony, Cucina, The Green Palate, Landau Grill, Lenny Bee Productions, Little Apple, Maria’s Bazar, Mountain Gate Indian Restaurant, Nancy’s of Woodstock Artisanal Creamery, New World Home Cooking, Oriole 9, Peace Love & Cupcakes, The Reservoir Inn, The T Salon, Santa Fe Woodstock, Sunflower Café, Woodstock Wine & Liquors, Woodstock Meats, and Yum Yum Noodle Bar. In June, The Woodstock Film Festival hosted the 5th Annual Spirit of Woodstock Celebration, honoring two individuals who embody the fiercely independent spirit that has made Woodstock and the Hudson Valley iconic for more than a century: John Hall and Alf Evers.

Chair of the Advisory Committee at Byrdcliffe, Henry T. Ford, spoke about the first honoree, Alf Evers, and introduced Karlyn Elia, former Ulster County/Town of Saugerties Historian, who presented the award. Chris Evers accepted on behalf of his father, who was honored posthumously for his work as a historian, author and photographer. New York Assemblyman Kevin A. Cahill presented the second Spirit of Woodstock award to John Hall for his work as a performer, singer/songwriter, environmentalist, and United States Congressman. The Spirit of Woodstock celebrates the roots of the Hudson Valley: its natural beauty, rich art and culture and the independent spirit of the people who live there. Previous honorees include Michael Lang (one of the founders of the 1969 Woodstock Festival), Congressman Maurice Hinchey, Mark Braunstein, Levon Helm, Ron Nyswaner, and Philippe Petit.

July brought hot weather and four Saturdays of Woodstock Film Festival events, including three special screenings and a benefit concert.

On Saturday, July 15 the Woodstock Film Festival presented a special screening of Story Of A Girl. Following the screening, there was an in-depth Q&A conversation with director Kyra Sedgwick and editor Sabine Hoffman.

On Saturday, July 8, the Woodstock Film Festival presented a special screening of Joe Cocker: Mad Dog With Soul. The film’s director, John Edginton, and Woodstock Music Festival promoter Michael Lang hosted a Q&A session after the screening.

On Saturday, July 22, the Woodstock Film Festival held a special screening of Strange Weather, starring Holly Hunter, at Upstate Films in Woodstock weeks before it made its theatrical premiere. The film’s director, Katherine Dieckmann, and the film’s composer, singersongwriter Sharon Van Etten, attended the screening and hosted a Q&A after the film. On Saturday, July 29, The Paul Green Rock Academy hosted a Giving Back concert at the Woodstock Lodge for the benefit of the Woodstock Film Festival. On August 12, film-goers enjoyed a Woodstock Film Festival special screening of Walking Out followed by a Q&A session led by film directors Alex and Andrew Smith.

In September, the Woodstock Film Festival Launch Party was hosted for the ninth year at Libation, in New York City’s Lower East Side. Featuring signature vodka cocktails courtesy of Ketel One, Woodstock Film Festival friends, filmmakers, alumni, actors, and industry representatives from near and far convened for the Woodstock Film Festival Launch Party, and it was one to remember. As the night drew to a close, one could sense the excitement in the air as guests planned their meetups and activities at the 18th Annual Woodstock Film Festival. Taste of Woodstock

Programming at the WOODSTOCK Cycle, The (America Divided) FILM FESTIVAL encourages those who use film as a way to explore social, environmental and political themes, while challenging their inherent boundaries. FOCUS ON MUSIC showcases films Stuck about music and musicians, simultaneously exploring the role that music plays in film. Several of this year’s films illustrate how music can be an important and powerful tool for expression. The film Stuck kicks off the festival, followed by a live performance. Music is also featured in Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me, Becks, 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Band, and A Symphony of Hope. For the 2017 BMI Music Panel, filmmaker Brian Weidling and composers Christopher Lennertz, Christopher Scott Brooks and Lucas Richman will talk about their collaboration on the uplifting story of Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.

The Woodstock Film Festival is Becoming Who I Was proud to present the World Cinema program to further our commitment to sharing experiences across continents. 2017 highlights include Italy’s Girl in Flight, Sweden’s The Square, Us and Them from the UK, The Traveller from Lebanon, La Chana from Spain, India’s Becoming Who I Was, and Shingal, Where Are You, about a persecuted minority in Iraq. These films offer a rare opportunity to expand our global consciousness.

THE HUDSON The Strange Ones VALLEY AND CATSKILLS have been a hotbed of creative energy and artistic vibrancy for over a century. In addition to attracting production talent from all over the world, many established and emerging filmmakers have now made the Hudson Valley their home. The Woodstock Film Festival’s The Rape of Recy Taylor SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN IN FILM & MEDIA initiative highlights exciting new works by some of today’s most talented, established and up-and-coming female directors. The aim is to feature the works of female directors and empower women of all ages who want to work in film and media to follow their dreams and carve their path in an industry that is still dominated by men. The Hudson Valley Film Commission (HVFC) creates JOBS and sustainable economic development by attracting, supporting and promoting local film, video and media production in the Hudson Valley/Catskills. Since 2000, the film commission has successfully positioned the Hudson Valley as a prominent region for FILM, TV, and associated activity by attracting and working with producers, directors, location scouts, industry members, and local communities. Since 2008, the Film Commission has tracked over $70 million in direct regional spending and over 1250 local jobs. Additional film tax incentives were finally granted to the Mid-Hudson Valley region on November 4, 2016. As a result, the Hudson Valley Film Commission is already seeing significant increases in production. The tax incentives passed in large part thanks to the tireless efforts of Ulster County Executive Mike Hein, who championed these new incentives and was able to bring on NYS Assemblymember Aileen Gunther and New York State Senator Amedore to work with him to level the playing field with the rest of New York State by specifically adding a new 10% tax credit on below the line labor costs.

The Haskell Wexler Award for Best Cinematography, named after the legendary cinematographer and twotime Academy Award winner, continues under the guardianship of Wexler’s friend and colleague Ellen Kuras. Donovan with Kit Harrington and Jessica Chastain, and Going Places with John Turturro, Bobby Cannavale and Audrey Tautou. Sarandon’s film work includes actor and producer credits that echo throughout the industry and the world-atlarge. In 2017 alone, she was the executive producer/producer of three important documentaries: Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, Soufra and The Survivor’s Guide to Prison. Sarandon has worked with human rights organizations like Film Aid International and social justice advocate MADRE, and in 2006, was awarded Action Against Hunger’s award for her work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and as an advocate for victims of hunger and HIV/AIDS. At 2016’s annual Cannes Film Festival, Sarandon was awarded the Women in Motion Award alongside Thelma & Louise co-star Geena Davis for their contributions to the film industry and women’s rights. In 2016, at the age of 70, Sarandon was named as one of the new faces of L’Oreal.

SHEP GORDON The Woodstock Film Festival’s Trailblazer award is given to a leader in the film and media arts industry who has carved innovative paths in the business, established an independent vision, affected social change, and created a strong and widespread appreciation of quality, substantive change in the arts. Shep Gordon is a true testament to the term ‘trailblazer.’ Named one of the 100 most influential people in Rolling Stone magazine and the subject of Mike Myers’ 2013 hit documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Gordon launched one of the first independent film companies and film distributors, Alive Pictures/ Island Alive, managed such musicians as Alice Cooper, Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross, and sparked the celebrity chef phenomenon, representing the likes of Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, Nobu, and Daniel Boulud. Gordon is known in the entertainment industry as having an eye for talent and an innate understanding of what people find entertaining. At age 21, on his first night in Los Angeles, he met up with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, and with determination and sheer chutzpah his future was launched. His company Alive distributed such films as Stop Making Sense, Koyaanisqatsi, The Whales of August, and Ridley Scott’s first film, The Duelist¸ winner of the Cannes Film Festival. In all, Gordon has produced or executive produced 23 films, including Kiss of the Spider Woman, A Time of Destiny, Prince of Darkness, People Under the Stairs, and Shocker. Gordon has managed the careers of such diverse talents as Groucho Marx, Raquel Welch, Kenny Loggins, and countless others. He is also credited with creating the celebrity chef, turning culinary arts into a multi-billiondollar industry. In addition to the impact he’s had on music, film and food, he is known for his philanthropic endeavors and sits on the board of the Tibet Fund for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Most recently, Gordon published his autobiography, They Call Me Supermensch, about his extraordinary life in the rock-n-roll business and beyond.

Whitmore in Independence Day, his versatile acting spans dramatic to comedic roles, including A League Of Their Own, Sleepless In Seattle, The Equalizer, Surveillance, The Cove, Bottle Shock, Scary Movie 4, The Grudge, While You Were Sleeping, The Last Seduction, Mr. Jones, Malice, Newsies, and Lost Highway. Most recently, Pullman’s acting career led him into the roles of Clyde in Andrew and Alex Smith’s Walking Out, and to The Ballad of Lefty Brown, directed by Jared Moshé, in which Pullman gives a tour de force performance as the title character. Speaking about his role as Lefty Brown and coming to Woodstock to receive the Excellence in Acting Award, Pullman says ˝audiences there are ready for an unusually intimate Western that is the coming of age story of a sixty-something sidekick. It was shot in the fall in Montana, so we can see how it stacks up against the foliage colors in Woodstock — both so spectacular.˝ Other recent roles include Fox’s Battle of the Sexes, Electric Entertainment’s LBJ and the hit USA television show The Sinner, this summer’s highest rated program. In addition to his passion for designing and restoring homes, Pullman has distinguished himself by his work with his local communities. In Los Angeles, he is on the board of the Cornerstone Theater, he works with his neighbors who formed Concerned Citizens Montana regarding the national need for a smart grid for energy transmission, and in upstate New York where he grew up, he supports local health services, including The Pullman Women’s Health and Birthing Center at St James Hospital in Hornell, NY.

KATHERINE DIECKMANN is a writer-director whose fourth feature, Strange Weather, starring Holly Hunter and Carrie Coon, opened in July 2017. She is an associate professor at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where she teaches screenwriting, and a creative advisor for the Sundance Institute.

LORI SINGER is a Golden Globe-winning actress, winning ‘ShoWest Newcomer of the Year’ as Ariel Moore in Footloose. She went on to act in Robert Altman’s Short Cuts, John Schlesinger’s The Falcon and the Snowman, Warlock, The Man with One Red Shoe, and Equinox, to name a few. In 2015, she was in Almereyda’s Experimenter, executive-produced the Peabody and three time Emmy-winning Silence in the House of God, and Lori Singer was featured in God Knows Where I Am, which won seven film festivals. Singer starred in the television series Fame and VR5. She is a Inspired concert cellist, performing on film with Yo Yo Ma in Atom Egoyan’s Inspired by Bach, and performs as a soloist with orchestras, most recently at Carnegie Hall.

EDITING NARRATIVE KATHARINE MCQUERREY is a film, TV and documentary editor. She worked with Jean Stephane Sauvaire on A Prayer Before Dawn, which premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, edited Roger Waters’ The Wall, artist Matthew Barney’s River of Fundament, and has cut such independent features as Josh Klausner’s Wanderland, Jody Hill’s Katharine McQuerrey A Legacy of a Whitetail Deerhunter and David Barker’s Daylight. She has worked with the Coen Brothers on films including Hail Caesar, Inside Llewyn Davis, True Grit, No Country for Old Men, and A Serious Man. ORIANA SODDU is an New York-based editor with over 20 years’ experience on commercial, film and television projects. Film credits include Andrew Dosunmu’s Restless City, Mother of George and the upcoming Where is Kyra?, which all premiered at Sundance. She has also edited many commercial projects for The History Channel, ESPN, MTV, Discovery Channel, VH1, AMC, and IFC.

SABINE HOFFMAN, ACE, has edited awardwinning feature films for 20 years, including Rebecca Miller’s Personal Velocity, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Sabine Hoffman Maggie’s Plan; Alex Sichel’s All Over Me; Rodney Evan’s Brother to Brother; Liza Johnson’s Elvis and Nixon, and Kyra Sedgwick’s Story of a Girl. As consultant and story adviser, she has edited many documentaries, including Academy Award–nominated Ferry Tales. Hoffman is a mentor to such filmmaker organizations as the Sundance Institute, IFP and Reel Works, and serves as adjunct professor at Columbia University.

CINEMATOGRAPHY ELLEN KURAS is one of the most important pioneering filmmakers of the last two decades, known for her visually stunning work in films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Blow and Summer of Sam. One of the first women invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers, she has worked with Ellen Kuras directors Michel Gondry, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, and Jonathan Demme. Kuras is the unprecedented three-time winner of the Best Dramatic Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Her directorial debut, The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), which she shot and produced, was an Academy Award-nominee in 2009.

LEE HIRSCH, director, producer and social entrepreneur, is known for creating change through his documentaries. Bully was released in 2012 by The Weinstein Company. He is founder and creative director of Local Voices.Org, using film to engage voters in political campaigns. His feature debut, Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony, chronicles the South African anti-apartheid struggle though its musical heros.

Otway was an editor on the Academy Award-nominated film Sari’s Mother, and Hell and Back Again, which won the Sundance Festival Grand Jury Prize, a DuPont Award and was an Academy Award nominee. JOY + NOELLE is NY-based animation and design duo JOY BURAN and NOELLE MELODY, illustrators, animators and, as it happens, twins. They studied Media Art at Pratt Institute and have since done animation for A+E Digital, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, PopSugar, TED, Cartuna, Amazon Studios, and Sesame Studios, among others. Their independent short films have screened at festivals worldwide and they designed the 2015 Woodstock Film Festival poster. Buran lives in Queens and Melody lives in Kingston, NY; they keep rooms in each other’s houses and nooks in each other’s brain. Each also keeps an exquisite collection of charming objects and pets, from which they draw inspiration.

ALEX SMITH is a filmmaker who collaborates with his twin brother Andrew. Their recent film Walking Out, released by IFC Films, stars Golden Globewinner Matt Bomer, Josh Wiggins, Bill Pullman, Alex Neustaeder, and Lily Gladstone. The Smiths wrote, directed and produced Winter in the Blood, winner of numerous festivals, and The Slaughter Rule, starring Ryan Gosling and David Morse, which premiered in competition at Sundance. They have written scripts for HBO, Warner Bros, Disney, Sony, and FX, and are currently writing pilots, for Amazon and Red Arrow.

PETER AHERN is a Brooklyn-based director, animator and illustrator. He freelances on a variety of content for such clients as Nike, Nickelodeon, Showtime, MTV, and the NBA. Han van Meegeren is considered one of the most talented artists of the 1920’s Dutch art scene. Then, pouring salt on the wound, his wife and son leave him. Distraught, van Meegeren escapes to the south of France to work on one thing: revenge. He dedicates himself to forging a perfect Vermeer that will fool the art world and humiliate his nemesis. When it comes time to unveil the painting, however, Han must choose between revealing the truth and getting his revenge, or keeping quiet and winning Jolanka’s heart. In this period piece of high tension drama, madness and romance, A Real Vermeer is a fictionalized story of a man who, in real life, rose to infamy as one of the most ingenious art forgers of all time. Rudolf van den Berg’s first documentary, Algerian Times, became the subtext for his style of filmmaking: not to just tell a story but to express its underlying reality. With a focus on the ˝search of what cannot be found,˝ his most renowned documentaries are The Alien’s Place, Sal Santen Rebel and Hamartía. Determined to learn more about feature films, van den Berg traveled to Italy, where he was shown that the essence of film as an art form is not to simply show reality but to express the invisible dimensions of reality. His first feature film, Bastille, received the Grand Prix of Dutch film. Van den Berg’s diverse career includes the films Evenings; Looking for Eileen; The Johnsons; Tirze, and the English language films The Cold Light of Day, For My Baby, and Snapshots, starring Burt Reynolds and Julie Christi. His film Suüskind is a controversial view of the annihilation of Dutch Jewry.

You can’t go home again. Or, can you? When Becks (short for Rebecca, played by gifted Tony winner Lena Hall) leaves her Brooklyn boho life to follow her long term girlfriend to LA, only to be jilted when she gets there, seeking solace at ‘home’ seems sensible. So Becks drives to her mother’s house in St. Louis and the life she left behind years ago. Distraught by her breakup, the spurned Brooklyn singer-songwriter starts playing guitar for tips in an old friend’s bar and parading her sexuality. Mom, skillfully portrayed by Christine Lahti, attempts to be supportive but often comes up short and awkward. Chronicling her attempts and frustration to re-establish a life back in the Midwest, the fish-out-of -water narrative is supported by a winningly fresh, original musical score and some hysterically funny scenes. Will Rebecca find her niche in St. Louis? Maybe one can ‘go home again.’ – Jeff Morris Elizabeth Rohrbaugh is a writer and director, based in NYC. Her documentary The Perfect Victim was on the PBS series America Reframed, after premiering at the Hot Springs International Film Festival. The film won a Telly Award and was nominated for a Silver Gavel Award. Her short film Dylan saw a successful festival run and was named Vimeo Short Of The Week and a Vimeo Staff Pick. Rohrbaugh was a writer/ director at MTV, where she won an Emmy Award and multiple CTAM Awards. Her work has been featured on The Takeaway with John Hockenberry, Glamour Magazine, Verily Magazine, Psychology Today, The Progressive, Indiewire, and the Feminist Current.

Daniel Powell is the Emmy- and Peabody-winning co-creator and executive producer of Inside Amy Schumer. He was a writer and executive producer on the cult animated series Ugly Americans, which ran on Comedy Central from 2010-2012. Earlier in his career, he was an associate producer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a contributing writer to Robert Smigel’s TV Funhouse segments on Saturday Night Live, and a house performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City.

Approaching womanhood, 12-year-old Florence experiences her first deer hunt, a traditional rite-of-passage in her matriarchal family. Fischer Karl Jacob is an actor and filmmaker from northern Minnesota who currently splits his time between Minnesota and NYC. His co-directorial debut, Pollywogs, premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2013. As an actor, he has worked with Julianne Moore and Michael Shannon in the Peter Sollett film Freeheld, Ben Kingsley and Sasha Baron Cohen on The Dictator, Joe Swanberg in three seasons of the IFC series Young American Bodies, and on Law and Order: SVU. His films have played at festivals throughout the world, including SXSW, LAFF, TCFF, Maryland FF, Tribeca, and Cucalorus. Onur Tukel’s Applesauce, which Jacob produced and acted in, premiered at Tribeca in 2015. Cold November, which received the Emerging Artist grant from the Jerome Foundation and is a 2016 IFP Narrative Lab film, is his debut feature as a solo writer-director.

In a rundown desert town, the men begin to vanish one by one, leaving their families to wonder where they have gone and will they return. Is this some sci-fi abduction? After one father’s cryptic note, the kids start referring to the disappearances as ‘going to the moon.’ The supernatural atmosphere persists, enhanced by soft grainy camera work and a discordant soundtrack, the town starting to look post-apocalyptic, with barren land, tumble-down buildings, and kids lolling about with no options or hope. The real reason for the absentee fathers, however, is more mundane. Lacking job opportunities, they seek greener pastures. At the center of it all is fifteen-year-old Mickey, juggling teenage tomfoolery, his love for another forsaken kid, and acting the grown-up, providing for his younger brother and now single mom. Thierry Cheung is a filmmaker based in New York City. He is of BIO Bruce Vietnamese descent but was raised in Hong Kong and Los Angeles. As a former architect, he has sharpened a passionate eye for space, composition and movement. His short film, Each Moment is the Universe, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and was a Vimeo Staff Pick. He received his MFA in Film from NYU, where he served as a department fellow and a teaching assistant for Spike Lee. She has written and directed several short films, including Back Waters, winner of NYU’s Nestor Almendros Award, and Sunday Morning, broadcast on the Independent Film Channel and shown at the Festival Nazionale of Sansepolcro. Nick, her latest short, shot in Harlem New York, premiered at The Huesca International Film Festival in Spain and was shown at the Concorso Nazionale Valdarno Cinema, where it won the UNICA prize. As his condition deteriorated and his attempt to selfmedicate turned into addiction, he disconnected from family and friends. On November 16, 1995, 19-year-old Holden committed suicide with a shotgun. In 2003, 30 years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic Richard Doc Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with ex-Marines Sal (Bryan Cranston) and Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) on a different type of mission: to bury Doc’s son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo burial at Arlington Cemetery and, with the help of his old buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home in suburban New Hampshire. Along the way, Doc, Sal and Mueller reminisce and come to terms with shared memories of the war that continues to shape their lives. Richard Linklater was born in Houston, Texas, in July 1960. After moving to Austin and founding a film society after he dropped out of college, Linklater began making small-budget movies, with early notable films such as Slacker and Dazed and Confused generating a lot of buzz. Linklater has branched out at times into mainstream Hollywood fare, such as Bad News Bears and School of Rock, but he quickly retreated into quieter, more personal films like Before Sunset and Before Midnight, having been nominated for two Oscars, as well. In 2009, Linklater was honored with Woodstock Film Festival’s Honorary Maverick Award. 2014’s Boyhood received overwhelming critical praise for its storytelling and unique process. In addition to receiving Oscar nominations, both the film and Linklater himself won Golden Globes in 2015.

Walking home alone late at night after drinks with friends, listening to music on her headphones and unaware of her surroundings, a young woman is accosted and dragged into a dingy, Brooklyn alleyway. From the impersonal rape kit to the fruitless attempt to identify the rapist, director Jessica Thompson’s compassionate and engaging filmmaking deftly guides us through the psyche of the victim. - Barbara Pokras, ACE Jessica M. Thompson is an Emmy-nominated Australian filmmaker who lives in New York City. She studied acting at three major drama schools in Australia before attending film school in Sydney, where she met Carlo Velayo. They quickly formed a formidable filmmaking duo and have made several award-winning short films together, including Hike, Percepio and Across the Pond. In 2011, Thompson founded Stedfast Productions, a collective of visual storytellers. As an film editor, she has worked with twice Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus, and on the Sundance-winning film Watchers of the Sky. Thompson also edited Cheryl Furjanic’s award-winning and Emmy-nominated documentary Back on Board: Greg Louganis, which recently premiered on HBO. Revengeance is the animated story of a low-rent bounty hunter named Rod Rosse, The One Man Posse, who gets entangled in a web of danger when he is hired by ex-biker/ex-wrestler turned U.S. Senator Deathface to find a girl who stole a package. The 8th hand-drawn animated feature film from master animator Bill Plympton, it is the first collaboration between Plympton and his creative partner, writer/artist Jim Lujan, who together bring us this new outstanding animated work. Bill Plympton is considered the King of Indie Animation, and is the first person to hand draw an entire animated feature film. Underground animation veteran Jim Lujan co-created Revengeance with Plympton, supplying the story, designs, script, and music, and voicing many of the characters.

In this lyrical ode to nostalgia, time and place play an important role alongside the exceptionally strong cast. His work is best described as humorous and accurate observations of human social behavior, film blended with sociology. His last three feature films have premiered in Cannes and his latest film, Turist, won the Uncertain Regard Jury Prize in 2014. It was distributed in over 75 territories and became a theatrical box-office success. In addition, Ostlund is a professor of film at the Academy of Fine Arts, Gothenburg, Sweden. The Square is his fifth feature film.

When the Kid Was a Kid, Needle and The Baron in the Trees form the trilogy of short films she directed, with her children as the main characters. Childhood and parenthood, family theater and exploring notions of growth and gender identity are the main themes of these works. She is the winner of Cinefondation First Prize at Cannes and the Silver Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival, among other awards. Danny’s seething anger is palpable and only countered by Conrad’s attitude toward privilege and entitlement. Briskly paced with wonderful acting, this well-crafted film is on the pulse of sociopolitical strife in the UK and reflects the current political unrest worldwide. – Gene Fischer Joe Martin was supposed to work on the railways like the rest of his family, but avoided getting a proper job and went to film school instead. The writer/director has won awards from the Royal Television Society, had a film in the top 5 of the itunes documentary chart, was named a young ‘hotshot’ by UK trade paper Broadcast, and screened in competition at Tribeca. Us and Them, his feature fiction debut which he wrote, directed and edited, had its world premiere at SXSW.

Their strained relationship and personal demons begin to heal with the aid of two local women, while the music of the renowned (Dutch) band The Waterboys serves as the catalyst for the individual turning points of the two men. A double coming-of-age film, Waterboys is a warm and amusing story of an estranged father who needed to be shaken up from his revelry and endless playboy adventures and do some growing up, and a son who had to learn to take life less seriously. Despite the levity, this charming and easy-going comedy is a movie of surprising depth. – Svetlana Krotek Dutch filmmaker Robert Jan Westdijk burst onto the scene in 1995 with his debut Zusje. This independently produced film won the Best Film award at the Netherlands Film Festival and went on to win twelve awards at film festivals around the world. In the following years, he made four more feature films that were successful at the Dutch box office and amassed a total of eight national Dutch film awards and eleven nominations. But after shooting the thriller The Dinner Club, he took a break from filmmaking in search of a new balance and purpose. How do you deal with the material objects left behind when you lose someone you love? Gifted photographer and artist Ruth Litoff, plagued by a lifetime of mental illness, committed suicide in 2008. It took her sister Hope six years to empty the packed storage bin. “I feel like I’ve trapped her in there,” says Hope. Boulder, Colorado, much like Woodstock, NY, was a mecca for peace, love and music in the 60s and 70s. Fresh out of the Woodstock Concert era, a band of hippies, with a sound reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Grateful Dead, was roaming around Boulder, playing wherever they could and winning a dedicated following. Among those fans was university student Lee Aronsohn, who was deeply affected by the band, tracking them everywhere and memorizing their songs. Although the musicians played two of the earliest Telluride Bluegrass Festivals, they broke up in 1976 without ever releasing an album. Decades later, that same student, now a successful television producer (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) set out to find the scattered members of Boulder’s most influential and elusive jam band, Magic Music, hoping to get them to play one last show. This is his and their story. Indeed, a magical one. – Sveltana Krotek Television producer Lee Aronsohn is credited for work on shows such as The Love Boat, Murphy Brown, Cybill, and is best known as one of the creative minds behind television’s beloved hit sitcoms Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. A University of Colorado alum, Aronsohn traveled back to Boulder for the first time in 40 years to tell the story of Magic Music, his first feature length documentary.

In the wake of the catastrophic 2010 Haitian earthquake, composer Christopher Lennertz, inspired by his friendship with Hands Together founders Father Tom Hagan and Doug Campbell, thought to use music to reignite hope. Starting with a Haitian folk theme, Lennertz enlisted 25 award-winning Hollywood composers to create a symphony, writing sections sequentially, like a musical chain-letter. With composers of such films as Jurassic Park 3, Wonder Boys and Passion of the Christ, the music of live studio sessions is woven into a whole piece by filmmaker Brian Weidling incorporating documentary footage of Haiti from its revolutionary beginnings, to the disaster, then its aftermath as Haitians rebuild their homes, and finally, a future of hope. Full of humanity, A Symphony of Hope confirms the importance of art, music and culture to reconstruct a country in crisis and affirms that the world is built stronger by people working hand in hand. – Colton Cox A native of Hillsborough, NJ, Brian Weidling is a graduate of Emerson College, where he studied television and film producing. He started his professional career assisting the head of business and legal affairs at Mutual Film Company on critically acclaimed films such as Saving Private Ryan, A Simple Plan and The Truman Show. In 2003, Weidling produced and directed The Goal — Claudio Reyna, a four-year odyssey following the US men’s soccer team captain’s journey through the 2002 World Cup in South Korea. The film was narrated by Robert Duvall and his company critically acclaimed by Sports Illustrated as ˝a soccer nut’s dream.˝ In August 2012, his company Tumbleweed Entertainment released Speak theatrically to critical acclaim. Speak followed the journey of the finalists for the World Championship of Public Speaking. Weidling is currently in production directing a film about a boy with a genetic disorder who has lived his entire life in bed.

For nearly 20 years, Herbert was an op-ed columnist for The New York Times, writing about politics, urban affairs and social trends. Previously, he worked at The Daily News as general assignment reporter, national correspondent, consumer affairs editor, city hall bureau chief, and city editor, and ultimately became a columnist and a member of the editorial board. In addition to newspaper work, Herbert was a national correspondent for NBC News. He has won numerous awards, including the American Society of Newspaper Editors award for distinguished newspaper writing and the Ridenhour Courage Prize for the “fearless articulation of unpopular truths.”

On television, Dunne can currently be seen on Jill Soloway’s new Amazon series I Love Dick, starring opposite Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Hahn. With depth, humor and pathos, La Chana celebrates the charisma and flair of self-taught Gypsy flamenco dancer Antonia Santiago Amador, aka La Chana, who in the 1960s-80s rose to international stardom and at the height of her career, suddenly vanished from the public eye. Peter Sellers saw her dance as a young woman and asked her to perform in the film The Bobo. Hollywood beckoned, but that was not to be. In her baroque Barcelona boudoir, La Chana continues to practice her art, and in conversations with family, friends, colleagues, and protégés, the film reveals her indomitable spirit, as well as the reason her career abruptly ended. Filled with footage of spectacular flamenco dance and music, and a mesmerizing final performance, La Chana goes under the skin and into the irrepressible heart of this eccentric woman with an uncanny gift for rhythm who, despite all odds, enjoys a comeback in her late sixties. Lucija Stojevic was educated at The University of Edinburgh and Prague Film School. She has independently produced over 30 short format documentaries for The Guardian, The New York Times and Global Post. Bradley Berman and Eric Weiss, both in their early 50s, have been involved in media production for decades – producing everything from magazines and websites to museum exhibitions and music festivals. Documenting the work of the brilliant community organizer Wade Rathke, The Organizer takes us through his process of founding ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), the first of its kind community-based organization. Starting with a few driven welfare moms in Arkansas, ACORN quickly mushroomed into a highly energized and mobilized half-million strong constituency that influenced government and corporate policy on the local, state and federal levels. Through Wade’s leadership, ACORN created unprecedented voter registration drives and brought economic gains for countless low income families, changing the socio economic and political map of the regions it operated in. But amid increasing difficulties, Wade stepped down, and two years later controversy and scandal resulted in the organization’s ultimate collapse. The Organizer is a story of particular relevance in these highly charged political times and one with a lot to teach us. – Svetlana Krotek Nick Taylor is a British/Canadian film director and editor based in Toronto. The numbers of women raped in Jim Crow South were staggering. In danger for their lives, they didn’t report the crimes and their stories went hidden. Not Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old mother who was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Unbroken, she spoke up, and with the help of Rosa Parks and legions of women, they worked to get Recy Taylor justice. Set against a backdrop of soulful music, documentarian Nancy Buirski masterfully crafts the mood as we witness a terrified black woman running for her life. This powerful emotional charge persists throughout the film as we move back and forth in time. Weaving vintage clips of early race films — black stories told by black filmmakers for black audiences — with mood-setting visuals from the actual locations and current interviews with her siblings more than 70 years after the event, the hurt, indignation and ultimate vindication go far beyond one woman’s story to expand on the history of race in America. Nancy Buirski, director, producer and writer of The Rape of Recy Taylor, is also the director/producer/writer of By Sidney Lumet, which had its world premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and Afternoon of a Faun (2013), which had its world premiere at the 51st New York Film Festival, the international premiere at the 64th Berlinale, and a record-breaking U.S. theatrical release by Kino Lorber. When director Lisa France received a call from Gabriel Cordell, a paraplegic man looking for someone to document the challenge of his life, she had no idea how much this would change her own life and that of many others. France and her quickly assembled ragtag crew— all with their own issues — filmed Gabriel’s attempt to be the first person to roll unassisted on his human-powered wheelchair from Santa Monica, CA, to Long Island, NY, in 100 days. The undertaking was physically and emotionally arduous, not just for Gabriel but the entire team, herded in cramped quarters throughout the trip. And everyone, from Gabriel, his crew, to the thousands of bystanders who crossed paths with Gabriel, was transformed in some way forever. As a visiting artist, she has worked for institutions including NYU Tisch and UCLA. She holds a Masters degree from Ohio State University and a B.A. from Brooklyn College, where she played Division I basketball and graduated with honors. She played professional basketball for the Manchester Giants in the United Kingdom.

Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me is the first major documentary to examine Davis’ vast talent and journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America. Davis’ career was legendary, so vast and multi-faceted it was dizzying in scope and scale. Yet his life was complicated and contradictory. A veteran of increasingly outdated show business traditions trying to stay relevant, Davis strove to achieve the American Dream in a time of racial prejudice and shifting politics, caught between the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America. By embracing Judaism, he yoked himself to another persecuted minority. Featuring interviews with Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg, and Kim Novak, personal photographs from Davis’ vast collection, and excerpts of TV, film and concert performances, the film explores the life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer whose trajectory blazed across America from the Depression through the 1980s. Sam Pollard is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. His work as an editor and as a producer/director spans nearly 30 years. Pollard’s first assignment was as producer of the 1989’s Henry Hampton’s Eyes On The Prize II: America at the Racial Crossroads, for which he received an Emmy. He was co-executive producer and producer of Hampton’s series, I’ll Make Me A World: Stories of African-American Artists and Community, and received a Peabody Award. From 1990–2010, Pollard teamed up with Spike Lee as an editor for several of his films. Since 2012, he produced/directed Slavery by Another Name for PBS; August Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand for PBS’ American Masters; the feature documentary Two Trains Runnin; and this year’s The Talk: Race in America for PBS.

In 2014, the Yezidis, a persecuted minority in Iraq, were driven from their ancestral land by ISIS during a campaign of genocide in which more than 3,000 women and children were kidnapped. Caught in raw, sweeping cinematography, Shingal: Where Are You weaves together the dramatic stories of the remaining young boys and their families, relegated to an abandoned coal mine on the Turkish border and longing for their lost home. In this poignant and beautifully executed documentary, we witness one family’s desperate fight to buy back their daughter from ISIS, negotiating on the cell phone through various middlemen. Using technology to communicate confidential information in an area ravaged by terrorism, the ambiguity between powerlessness and power, hope and despair, all conveyed via digital communication, is as astonishing as it is heart breaking. While the plight of a persecuted people may seem unpleasant, director Angelos Rallis has created a touching film that is profound and compelling. – Ben F. Fischer Angelos Rallis is a producer, director, social scientist, and photojournalist who started his career as a theatre play director for the Greek National Television. He then moved to the UK to do research in visual sociology in the Centre for Urban and Community Research and commenced a long-term project documenting London’s East End emerging cultures and communities. He is an elected member of the International Federation of Journalists since 2006, and his work in Africa and Asia has been published in newspapers and used by press agencies and NGOs around the world. Beth Aala is a Filipino-American documentary filmmaker and film producer. Aala received a Bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego in both Visual Arts and Communication. In 2006, she won a Peabody Award for co-producing the film The Music in Me. Aala is best known for Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, which she co-directed and produced with comedian Mike Myers.

Donna Zaccaro is a documentary filmmaker and founder and president of Dazzling Media and Ferrodonna Features Inc. Both are New York-based media production companies, one for profit and the other nonprofit, with a mission of producing films about women, women’s issues and social justice issues. Zaccaro served as the director and producer of Geraldine Ferraro: Paving the Way, a critically-acclaimed documentary about the political trailblazer. Her latest film, To A More Perfect Union: US v. Windsor, focuses on the stories behind the pivotal case in the marriage equality movement and won the Accolade Global Film Competition’s Award of Excellence for Documentary Feature and Woman Filmmakers. co-founder of Impact Artist Management and has supervised music for over 30 feature films. He won the 2017 Grammy Award for music supervision and for producing the soundtrack for the feature film Miles Ahead, starring Don Cheadle. Gerrard began his entertainment career some 30 years ago working as an apprentice to legendary music manager and film producer Shep Gordon. He became the first in-house music supervisor at Gordon’s Alive Pictures, finding key music for Gordon’s films and forming the beginnings of longstanding relationships with a slew of Hollywood directors, including Wes Craven, for whom he supervised music for over 10 films, including the Scream trilogy.

Susan Sarandon, known for her

award-winning performances in such iconic films as Atlantic City, Thelma & Louise, Lorenzo’s Oil, and The Client, brings a unique presence to every role. From her fearless portrayal of Annie Savoy in Bull Durham to her Academy Award® and SAG® Award-winning role as Sister Helen in Dead Man Walking, the hard-working veteran’s film work as actor and producer echoes through the industry. is an accomplished actor, director and producer. Dunne’s recent feature film credits include War Machine, starring Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton, and Dallas Buyers Club, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. Dunne’s feature film directorial debut was 1997’s Addicted to Love, starring Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick, which he followed one year later with Practical Magic , starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. On television, Dunne can currently be seen on Jill Soloway’s new Amazon series I Love Dick, starring opposite Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Hahn. Previously, he recurred on the Showtime series House of Lies, playing opposite Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, and the Fox series Red Band Society , opposite Octavia Spencer. In 2015, he completed a series long arc on WGN’s Manhattan.

THE AMERICAN CONDITION Do the arts have a responsibility to society? In the current climate, as arts’ funding undergoes greater scrutiny, the purpose and function (if any) of art becomes ever more significant. Documentary films provide a lens through which audiences come face-to-face with all kinds of people in a variety of circumstances; films illuminating such issues as racial discrimination, inequality in education, voter rights, clean energy, same sex marriage, medical marijuana, gender equality, community organizing — all subjects of concern in America today. In this panel, top-notch documentarians come together to discuss their role in making films that help define the American Condition: the values, hopes, struggles, and victories of citizens all across the country. PANELISTS: Richard Rowley is an

Academy Award-nominated director and Sundance Film Festival winning cinematographer, with 19 years experience producing and directing and 23 years shooting for screen and television. His documentary feature Dirty Wars pioneered a fusion of nonfiction reportage and dramatic narrative storytelling, winning him dozens of festival awards and an Academy Award nomination. His other theatrically released documentary features have been honored at scores of festivals around the world, from Berlin to Sundance. Rowley has directed, produced and filmed dozens of television documentaries for Channel 4, BBC, Canal +, ZDF, ARD, CBC, PBS, CNN International, Al Jazeera, and others. Recently, he was lead cinematographer for Showtime’s climate change series, Years of Living Dangerously, and one of the directors of EPIX’s America Divided.

Prior to completing Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution for HBO, Redford’s other HBO films included Toxic Hot Seat, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, Mann v. Ford, and The Kindness of Strangers. While completing Happening, Redford traveled the world as an American Film Showcase ambassador with his two award-winning documentary films, Resilience: the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope and Paper Tigers. Along with his father Robert Redford, he co-founded and currently chairs The Redford Center, a nonprofit media entity that engages people through inspiring stories that galvanize environmental action.

and executive editor of Against All Odds: The Fight for a Black Middle Class. He is the author of Losing Our Way: An Intimate Portrait of a Troubled America, published by Doubleday, and the moderator of Bob Herbert’s OP-ED.TV, a weekly interview program on CUNYTV. For nearly 20 years, Herbert was an op-ed columnist for The New York Times, writing about politics, urban affairs and social trends. Previously, he worked at The Daily News as general assignment reporter, national correspondent, consumer affairs editor, city hall bureau chief, and city editor, before becoming a columnist and a member of the editorial board. In addition to newspaper work, Herbert was a national correspondent for NBC News. His numerous awards include the American Society of Newspaper Editors award for distinguished newspaper writing and the Ridenhour Courage Prize for ˝the fearless articulation of unpopular truths.˝

Sam Pollard is Peabody

and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. His work as an editor, producer and director spans almost 30 years. He received an Emmy in 1989 for an episode of Eyes On The Prize II: America at the Racial Crossroads. Eight years later, his documentary series, I’ll Make Me A World: Stories of African-American Artists and Community, received a Peabody. From 1990-2010, Pollard edited Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Girl 6, Clockers, and Bamboozled. Pollard and Lee also co-produced a number of documentaries, including Spike Lee Presents Mike Tyson, which earned Pollard an Emmy. Other prestigious films include Four Little Girls, about the 1963 Birmingham church bombings, When The Levees Broke, a series that won a Peabody and three Emmys, Slavery By Another Name, August Wilson: The Ground On Which I Stand, Two Trains Runnin’, and The Talk: Race in America.
