“It was the first painting in a series of paintings that I made that spoke of life anddeath … dried flower stalks and yellow fields then growth signified by bright paint strokes. I’m thrilled and honored to have my work chosen for the 2022 Woodstock Film Festival poster. The painting was a fresh start for me and hopefully will signify an exciting year for the festival.” - Joan Snyder

2022 has brought a new awareness to this country and has been a wake-up call that we can and must all have a voice in our destiny. As we reach the fall and enter the 23rd year of the Woodstock Film Festival, I pause to reflect upon the years that have gone by, the changes in our world, and the distance we as people and as filmmakers have traveled during that time. In that frame of mind, the Woodstock Film Festival welcomes everyone to the place where ideas are born, nurtured and shared, and where the visions of innovative thinkers, artists, and explorers abound.

A film festival is a curated world, lived for just a few days, where ideas are developed and exchanged, careers are born, and new relationships sprout, all of which last into the future. The past two years have challenged our mission but we persevered by taking advantage of local drive-ins and online opportunities (2020), and when social distancing permitted (2021), using a few indoor venues, a makeshift drive-in, and online streaming. But this year the festival will rise up at numerous indoor venues throughout the Hudson Valley, along with a limited online program. And so today it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone back. It’s time to celebrate together the art and craft of film with all its diversity and glory once again!

When festival founder Meira Blaustein and noted critic Thelma Adams programmed their “Amazing Women in Film” panel for the first time in 2004, the morning events were the B-side of the male-heavy producer’s panel that followed. The audience was all women. And they were curious and engaged. Over the years, the panel gathered notable high-profile women directors, producers, and actors. And we began a dialogue that started in that quiet corner at Utopia Studios, and then blossomed with each new year, becoming part of a wave of advocacy for the women’s gaze in the media. Where did we come from, how far have we gotten, and what can we manifest for the future? That’s the goal of this now popular panel that began in obscurityrelativeandfought to be heard.

CONGRATULATIONSTOTHISYEAR’SEVOLUTIONARYFILMMAKERS!
When the Woodstock Film Festival launched in early 2000, Mark Braunstein gave us our first check, presented in person at a volunteer recruitment gathering by the late Victoria Langling, then head of customer care and charitable giving at Markertek.
Generous, innovative, brilliant, and kind, Mark was larger than life. Founder of Markertek, a leading broadcast supply company, his impact on the Hudson Valley was immense, being one of the top economic developers, with well over 100 employees at any given time.
Michael’s fame made him easily recognizable, and he was equally charming to everyone he met. His “Peter Pan” glow, coupled with his gentle spirit and sense of humor, were treasured by everyone. Being with Michael was always a joy. When we launched the Spirit of Woodstock Award in 2011, Michael was the obvious choice as our first recipient. And true to Michael’s spirit, the event was magical. We held the gala at a stunning former piano factory on the Hudson River, catered by Mary Giuliani, with live music by John Sebastian and a presentation by Academy Awardwinner Barbara Kopple, all close friends.
For many years, Mark was our leading benefactor, however the Woodstock Film Festival was just one of the many organizations, schools, food banks, events, projects, and people that he supported.
Although gone from our community, in our hearts Michael will be forever young, with his youthful grin, white sneakers, light gait, and ability to make everything seem easy and joyous. A deeply loving father and husband, as well as a friend to many near and far, Michael was a beacon of light. Rock on, dear friend.
In 2014, the Woodstock Film Festival honored Mark with our Spirit of Woodstock Award, a celebration filled with family, colleagues, and friends at the Emerson Resort and Spa.

Not to mention that at just about any art event in Woodstock and the Hudson Valley, you were sure to see the name Markertek or Mark Braunstein and wife Katharine L. McKenna as sponsors.

Michael Lang’s contribution to the Woodstock Film Festival was profound. His connections in the music, art, and film world were deep and far-reaching (his friend Peter Max did our poster back in 2007).
Mark was truly a great friend and one of the foremost pillars of our community. His contribution will be felt for a very long time.
