DEAR WGI COMMUNITY,
I am thrilled to see yet another year of WGI’s continued success as thousands of directors, staff, volunteers, performers, and fans make their way to Dayton for our 47th annual World Championships.
To all of the audience members, I hope you can appreciate the spectacular skill sets displayed by groups this weekend, as excellence is a trademark of every World Championships event. These performers have put in countless hours of work and preparation to bring you the competitive programs you will see this weekend, and they all deserve your thunderous applause.
To all of the educators and family members of these incredible young performers, it is because of you that their growth and development push the boundaries of what is possible in this activity. Without your unwavering dedication, their journey to WGI and beyond would not be possible.
To all of the volunteers and staff, we can’t thank you enough. You are the backbone of this organization, and events like this would not be possible without your hard work and commitment to excellence. You hold a special place in our hearts, and you have our eternal gratitude.
And lastly, on behalf of WGI Sport of the Arts, we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to all performers, past and present, who make WGI the vibrant organization it is today.
Very truly yours,
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, WGI SPORT OF THE ARTS

WGI Judges undergo a rigorous training program. Many are educators and professionals whose life work has been reinforced by their indoor percussion and winds experiences, and look to reward the efforts and achievements of today’s performers.
GENERAL EFFECT: 40 POINTS
General Effect judges are evaluating two specific sub-captions during a performance: Repertoire Effectiveness (Program Concept/Premise, Creativity/Imagination, Staging/ Musical Variety, Pacing, Audio/Visual Blend) and Communication Effectiveness (Musical/Visual Expressive Qualities, Artistic/Physical Believability, Mood and Emotion, Excellence as Effect, Idiomatic Interpretation, Audience Engagement). The emphasis and focus of adjudication will be on the wind instruments.
VISUAL: 3O POINTS
Visual Analysis judges consider the show’s visual composition as well as the achievement quality. Composition elements being analyzed include Use of Design Elements, Visual Orchestration Through Time and Layered Events, Variety of Design Choices, and Reflection of the Musical Structure. Achievement elements include Spacing and Orientation, Timing and Control, Stylistic Accuracy and Training, and Detail and Nuance.
MUSIC: 30 POINTS
Music judges consider the show’s musical composition as well as the achievement quality. Composition elements being analyzed include Depth and Variety of Orchestration, Clarity of Intent, Range of Musical Choices, and Range of Dynamics and Expression. Achievement elements include Sonority, Musicality, Quality of Balance and Blend, Intonation, Stylistic Accuracy, Rhythmic Accuracy/Tempo Control, and Ensemble Cohesion. The emphasis and focus of adjudication will be on the wind instruments.

Winter Guard International (WGI) Sport of the Arts is the world’s premier non-profit organization producing indoor color guard, percussion, and wind ensemble competitions. It is called the Sport of the Arts because it brings music and motion to life through performance in a competitive format.
Now entering its 47th year in 2024, the sport continues to evolve and grow. This season, there were more than 41,000 participants at the regional level, and more than 15,000 participants competing at the 2024 WGI World Championships.
WGI HALL OF FAME
The Hall of Fame is the highest honor given to those individuals who make a significant contribution to WGI and who have, in some way, influenced the course of our history. Their contribution may be made through artistic standards, administrative leadership, or adjudication.

WGI Percussion Judges undergo a rigorous training program. Many are educators and professionals whose life work has been reinforced by their indoor percussion experiences, and look to reward the efforts and achievements of today’s performers.
MARCHING PERCUSSION
EFFECT-MUSIC: 30 POINTS
Effect-Music judges evaluate the Overall Effect and the Music Effect. They are charged with crediting the overall effectiveness of all the elements presented by the ensemble and consider the musical elements involved in creating an engaging program, as well as the performers’ ability to connect with the audience.
EFFECT-VISUAL: 20 POINTS
Effect-Visual judges evaluate the Overall Effect and the Visual Effect.
They are charged with crediting the overall effectiveness of all the elements presented by the ensemble and consider the visual elements involved in creating an engaging program, as well as the performers’ ability to connect with the audience.
MUSIC (30 POINTS)
Music judges look at the Composition of a show (orchestration, musical design, range of content, and clarity of intent) as well as the Performance Quality (sound production, musicianship, rhythmic clarity, and ensemble cohesiveness) of the musicians.
VISUAL (20 POINTS)
Visual judges consider both the Composition of the show (orchestration, visual design, motion, and clarity of intent) and the Performance Quality (accuracy, movement, presence, uniformity, and cohesiveness) of the performers.
CONCERT PERCUSSION
ARTISTRY: 50 POINTS
An intense look is given to the program and the fulfillment of those programmatic choices. Communication, musicianship, presence, and expression make up a few of the components being evaluated.
PERFORMANCE: 50 POINTS
The judge listens with a critical ear for the clarity of the intent of the composition, while considering performance qualities including musicianship, quality of sound, and technical excellence.

EMERGING VOICES AWARDS
The I AM WGI: Emerging Voices Award is a community-funded monetary award that provides an opportunity for outstanding minority performers with significant financial needs to reach their highest potential. The award is geared to those individuals who show promise to be a beacon for positive change in both their local communities and WGI.
2024 EMERGING VOICES AWARD WINNERS
Sade Taylor is currently studying to be an elementary teacher, and she believes that it is essential to advocate for minority representation both in and outside of the marching arts. The awarded funds will be used to further her education so she can be a driving force in the lives of her students.
Olivia Starnes plans to be a leader and advocate for those who are underrepresented in the marching arts. She plans to use the awarded funds to continue her marching arts education and be an active representation of diversity in the indoor marching arts community.

FUTURE LEADERS PROGRAM
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2024 MEMBERS OF THE FUTURE LEADERS PROGRAM!
The I AM WGI: Future Leaders Program aims to lay the groundwork for the mentorship of aspiring leaders from within the WGI community. This program is a comprehensive mentorship and leadership opportunity designed to foster the next generation of leaders in our activity.
THE FIRST-EVER GRADUATING CLASS OF THE I AM WGI: FUTURE LEADERS PROGRAM!
We also want to congratulate these incredible individuals who have continuously demonstrated their passion for the marching arts and shown a desire to shape the future of the indoor activity over the past three years. We can’t wait to see where the future takes these one-of-a-kind leaders!
