rediscovering the big how Stratford Picturehouse is set to give classics and gems an outing at full size and resolution in April + May

by Jon Massey

Stratford Picturehouse is encouraging audiences to come to big screen showings of classics and gems with its ReDiscover season. The cinema is set to screen a selection of films – namely American Honey, The Lighthouse, The Last Black Man In San Francisco, The Florida Project and The Farewell – on dates in April and May to appeal to fans of cerebral film.

The feature that caught our eye, however, was The Lobster – a deeply strange black comedy that’s set for a showing on the big screen on May 19 at 2.30pm.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ absurdist flick follows Colin arrell and Rachel Weisz as they attempt to na igate a societ fixated on the virtues of couplehood.

Much of the action takes place at a last chance saloon hotel where singletons must pair up to avoid the peculiar fate of being transformed into an animal.

Here individuals desperately thrash around trying to identify similarities in others to use as the basis for a trial relationship.

Con ersel a group of loners act as prey for the hotel guests to round up as well as a resistance group – banding together with the exact opposite iew of how society should be, essentially that all relationships are wrong and should be shunned.

While horrific in its scope The

Lobster is a powerful satire on the way we structure our societies and the beliefs we hold about who should and shouldn’t be allowed to couple up.

It’s also a beautifully shot, austere film that deser es a performance at maximum si e and resolution.

Times vary for the showings, which take place between Apr 23 and May 28 at Stratford Picturehouse. Tickets cost £8. Go to picturehouses.com for more information
