for people to explore the water around the Wharf
by Jon Massey
Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats,” says Ratty to Mole in the Wind In The Willows.

It’s a sentiment shared by those behind Skuna Boats, based on West India Quay – providers of craft for hire that offer two very specific attractions while exploring the waters of the docks around Canary Wharf.
BBQ Boats
These circular vessels are electrically powered and can be hired for up to 10 people on a self-drive basis.
The experience lasts two hours with 100 minutes on the water and includes a BBQ, fuel, utensils and full tuition in navigating the vessel. There are even blankets and hot water bottles available in colder weather.
Customers bring their own food to cook, while sailing round West India North Dock, and enjoying drinks from Skuna’s bar. Alternatively, a number of food packages are available from £16 per person.
The Admiral’s three-course package, for example, costs £39pp and includes burgers, grilled vegetables, marinated meats and a selection of condiments and desserts.
There’s also the option to join a shared boat for a guided tour of the dock and enjoy food cooked on board for £45pp for lunch and £49pp for dinner.
The boats are family friendly and are designed to cater for all ages, ensuring kids and adults alike have a fun, safe time cooking and dining on the water.

Hot Tub Boats
Unquestionably the water craft with greatest quay appeal, Skuna’s toasty, aquatic craft draw attention and friendly waves as they glide through the Wharf.

Able to travel further than the BBQ Boats – thanks to fold-down chimneys – crews of up to seven per boat can journey as far as South Dock at a sedate, relaxed pace.
The water, which is fresh for each sailing, is heated to 38ºC with its temperature maintained by an eco-friendly stove on board.
Private bookings including hire of the electrically propelled craft and 75 minutes on the water – start at £225 per boat. The experience is available year-round in all weathers, including the colder months to enjoy the full benefit of the warm water.
Shared guided tours can also be booked featuring a tour guide for £35pp. Full changing facilities are provided on site. Drinks can be purchased from Skuna’s bar.
l Skuna’s craft are also available for events with its operation able to cater for up to 100 guests out on the water at any one time.
