T

he project to regenerate and recondition Erno Goldfinger’s brutalist masterpiece, alfron Tower is a complicated affair. There wasn’t even room in the introductory paragraph to namecheck its actual owner oplar Harca housing association which rather than razing the Grade II listed building decided to engage Londonewcastle to redevelop the 2 -storey slab of brown concrete that’s been a part of the East End’s skyline since the 1 0s. In turn, the developer commissioned architects Studio Egret West SEW to renovate the exterior and 50 of the properties within, the other half of the interiors being left for Ab ogers esign A , which also styled one of two recently released show apartments at the development. Adding further gloss to an already high-calibre magazine of parties, the other features dressing by design firm 2LG, but more of that on the opposite page. irst I sat down with A founder and creative director Ab ogers to talk concrete, spirits from the past and styling the one-bedroom show property. “Our involvement has been as collaborators with SEW,” said Ab. “What has been great about the project is that the developer, Londonewcastle has been open to conversation and communication and very respectful of design. “ egarding SEW, it’s been a uestion of pushing each other. A lot of the work has been about getting under the skin of Goldfinger what we call Goldfinger’s ghost going through the archives and imagining how he would have responded to designing today. And we maximise storage, so it’s working both on the historical, on the cultural, on the experience, but then on the practical.”

Luckily there’s an amazing archive on Goldfinger, and it’s been a privilege to spend time at iba going through the archives, looking at his notebooks and trying to create a set of rules responding to how he would work. “I think we know him uite well. He was a cantankerous man, with a passion and a fury a hampagne socialist of the first order and someone that wound up Ian leming considerably, so much so that the author named one of his chief ond villains after him. “He was a pioneering modernist who really believed in these human values his buildings are great socialist expressions. “I think that people focus too much on rutalism being brutal, rather than being raw, which is what it really implies. alfron Tower has got a warmth of material Goldfinger uses wood, an extraordinary green marble and these really vibrant coloured tiles that run throughout the building. eople get very distracted with the minute details on buildings like this, but they are massive,

bold statements. We’ve tried hard not to mess it up, to work with those bones he’s given us and to maximise their impact and to make them as relevant today as possible. “The show at is a Goldfinger completely. What we have done is provide a space that will open up a dialogue I’m uite humbled working in the building. “We’ve really tried to work with the notion of the streets in the sky’. I really hope buyers feel they’re living in a social environment with friendly neighbours, and they can have a sense of community in these different spaces. “The community can extend into these shared spaces, which are not rented but can be booked, that people can enjoy and use and come together. It’s really trying to tie the community together, which is the key to the project, where they’ll be able to enjoy first-rate architecture with extraordinary views and a dialogue with that architecture which comes from the past and will continue into the future.” Londonewcastle founder and OO obert Soning said “We’re delighted to have launched the show apartments. Without losing sight of Goldfinger’s original intention, we will restore this building while adapting the homes for 21st-century living. hile Studio Egret West created the interior architecture for the second show apartment, it was up to Russell Whitehead and Jordan Cluroe of 2LG to dress it for marketing. Russell said: “If you turned it upside down and shook it, everything that falls out would be ours – wallpaper, lighting, curtains, fabrics was all us. “We found some original 1960s and 1970s fabric designs, because textiles are the starting point for a lot of our projects and started to design our own print collection for the apartment, which you can see in the bedrooms in lilac and pistachio. “That was a hand-drawn design we did specifically for this project. We also did bespoke versions of several product designs that we’ve launched recently, so the lights

above the kitchen are a new version of our Capsule Collection in aluminium and the table in the dining room is a version of our Stanley dining table. “There’s quite a lot of our identity within the space, but reframed within a colour palette and with materials which fit the building. “It’s an iconic building, and I think that Brutalism is very close to a lot of people’s hearts, and it’s certainly a design-led person who might be drawn to that building. “There’s a lot of love for it in the architectural community and the design community. “A lot of people we’ve spoken to, even within our own friendship group, absolutely love it and were really excited about that building itself.” For more on design go to 2lgstudio.com or abrogers.com

A

sense of dynamism abounds at the lavish marketing complex for The Stage development by Galliard Homes. Frequently refreshed by the ongoing presence of art gallery Imitate Modern’s exhibitions, the latest addition to the space comes in the form of interior design inspiration for studios and one-beds in the 37-storey tower, which is currently under construction in Shoreditch. This aesthetic injection arrives courtesy of Nicola Fontanella of Argent Design, who has been enlisted by the developer to dress two show apartments to reveal their potential for “space efficient living”. This is especially relevant to the studio suite. With a hidden kitchen and sliding, semi-transparent panels employed in her design, it’s a task she’s clearly relished, taking inspiration from the neat, slick gadgetry of the Kingsman films. “The idea with this space – it’s just over 430sq ft – is that you walk in and see the whole apartment,” said Nicola. “But we’ve laid it out as the Kingsman lair – this is not like a James Bond movie, it’s cooler than that. It’s all about being efficient with space. “Galliard asked us to look at this because we work on a lot of small spaces on super yachts and aircraft, for example. “That’s obviously the other end of the spectrum but the thought process of working with spaces like that gives you the knowledge and capacity to apply it to somewhere like this. “That’s when we came up with the concept of having an arrival experience – you don’t see the kitchen or you can see it if the sliding doors in the hall are open. With them shut, it’s invisible. Essentially you walk in and see the value of the whole apartment. “There are dividers but they are semi-transparent crittal panels with ribbed glass so you have a division but not some thing that cuts right through. “It’s industrial without being grubby. We’ve gone for some exposed brick – some clients will like that while others would rather have a fully finished wall. “We’ve gone for limed timber and antiqued leather – a home industrial look, very arts and crafts. “Instead of having some shiny joinery we’ve done perforated metal for the open shelving, there’s a lot of that all over Shoreditch. “There are lots of sockets all over the apartment in the right place too, storage in the bathroom, waxed tiles on the floor and insets of travertino in the walls. “My favourite thing about it is the crittal partitions, which we’ve put in the shower too. We’ve made the cubicle super size so there’s a real feeling of luxury there. “The kitchen, dividers and bathroom are all included and clients can speak to the developer about other features they may want to include in their homes.” Both the studio and one-bed feature wide oak plank flooring, gallery-style spotlights and integrated Miele appliances as well as composite stone

t really was a case of love at first sight for Ahad Khalid and his wife when they found their dream home. Although they had been looking for a number of months, it took them less than 24 hours to decide to buy and then just 23 days to complete the purchase.
