CHILDREN OF THE UNDERGROUND
NEW SERIES! In the late 1980s, Faye Yager saw that the family court system was failing to protect children from abuse by their legal guardians. Putting lives ahead of the law, Yager helped start a secret network to hide victims from an abusive parent or partner. The organization, which became known as Children of the Underground, effectively relocated victims and aided them in changing their identities. As Yager’s vigilantism became publicized, the FBI took note and began investigating the group’s work. Yager was also the target of numerous lawsuits, most notably from banking pioneer Bipin Shah, who offered a $2 million reward to anyone who could track down his ex-wife and two daughters. FX’s five-part docuseries Children of the Underground looks back at Yager’s network to unravel its complicated history and the dark side of a group that circumvented the law to protect the vulnerable. All five episodes premiere back-to-back on Aug. 12. Premieres on FX Friday, Aug. 12
LITTLE DEMON
NEW SERIES!
When a show’s description starts with “Thirteen years after being impregnated by Satan,” you know you’re in for a wild ride.
FXX’s animated comedy Little Demon is often bizarre, iconoclastic, disturbing and a hell of a lot of fun. Laura (voice of Aubrey Plaza) was a wild Wiccan who hooked up with Lucifer himself (voice of Danny DeVito) and gave birth to the Antichrist, a daughter named Chrissy (voice of Lucy DeVito, Danny’s daughter). Since then, Laura has traveled around the country in an effort to keep Chrissy away from her dad, but the arrival of adolescence gives Chrissy some serious supernatural powers that can’t be kept under wraps. Satan — who is trying to be the cool, fun dad — wants Chrissy to join him and unite the metaphysical realms into a powerful, lawless universe for eternity ... or maybe just every other weekend.
“It’s the part he was meant to play, I think!” Lucy DeVito says of her dad providing the voice of Satan. “It’s hysterically funny casting. In real life, my dad’s like the nicest, sweetest guy ever and the best dad, but he likes the dark, @#$%ed-up characters.”
So does Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty), who’s an executive producer on Little Demon. “We wink at Rick and Morty, too, and uber-fans of that show,” DeVito says. “He’s definitely an inspiration, and the writers have taken a lot of guidance from him.”
The voice cast also features Eugene Cordero, Lennon Parham and Michael Shannon. Guest voices in Season 1 include Mel Brooks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Pamela Adlon, Rhea Perlman, Patrick Wilson, Dave Bautista, Lamorne Morris and Sam Richardson. — Ryan A. Berenz Premieres on FXX Thursdays beginning Aug. 25
BETTER CALL SAUL
FINAL EPISODES! Immediately following Better Call Saul’s all-important penultimate episode (Aug. 8), Talking Dead’s Chris Hardwick hosts a one-off aftershow — Talking Saul — to break down the big moments (should we be worried?!) and prepare us for the Aug. 15 series finale. While Better Call Saul was the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, Saul’s (Bob Odenkirk) story has taken us to so many unexpected emotional heights as we watched small-time lawyer Jimmy McGill turn into a man who puts the “criminal” in “criminal attorney.” We’re going to miss you, Saul Goodman! Premieres on AMC Mondays
