ABOUT THE PARK
Walk to Lily Loch, Rothiemurchus The Cairngorms National Park is the largest of Britain’s National Parks. At over 4,500sq km, it is almost twice the size of the Lake District (the next largest National Park in the UK). The area’s mountains have shaped the people, culture, heritage, scenery and character and dominate the Park as well as giving it its name. The National Park is a truly aspirational place for people to live, work, learn and visit. Right across the Park communities embody the spirit of the region; living in and caring for this very special place. Our natural heritage, our beautiful landscape, our native woodland, our abundant wildlife have evolved over many, many generations. Little wonder that the area is envied for our special advantages of low population density, lack of pollution and an unrivalled selection of places to visit and natural habitats to explore with ease. The Park is home to ancient pine forests, Arctic mountaintops, lochs, rivers and moorland as well as some of the most iconic wildlife, and a quarter of the UK's threatened species. In fact, 50% of the Park is designated as being of national and international importance for nature conservation.
14
The area contains four of Scotland’s five highest mountains, is home to three of the country's ski areas and significant stretches of two of Scotland’s major rivers; The Spey and The Dee. From castles, distilleries and museums to gentle strolls and extreme sports, there is an abundance of exciting activities for the entire family to learn and enjoy throughout the year. Not only that, but the area produces a range of high quality food and drink including beef and lamb, salmon and whisky. The Cairngorms National Park is proud to be a destination of choice for visitors to explore, participate in a wealth of sports and outdoor activities or simply relax and enjoy the remarkable countryside. From gentle walking to adventurous climbs; bird and nature watching to off-road driving; a warm invitation is extended to experience this very special place.

ABOUT THE PARK Things to See and Do The Cairngorms National Park is a world renowned area where residents and visitors alike can enjoy an unparalleled range of outdoor recreational opportunities. Here you are free to roam the forests, explore ancient glens, climb mountains, cross moorlands or wade streams. All that is asked is that this is done in a responsible manner, with respect, and in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. www.outdooraccess-scotland.com Whether you choose to explore on foot, on horse-back, by bicycle or even by boat or canoe you will be enthralled by the sense of freedom and space.
The Park's landscape is an intricate mix of mountains, heather moorland, farmland and woodland. At its heart is a large mountain range which features the highest, coldest and snowiest plateaux in the British Isles and is home to four of the five highest mountains in Scotland: Ben Macdui (1309 m), Cairn Gorm (1245 m), Braeriach (1296 m), Cairn Toul (1293 m). Meanwhile, the forests around the foothills of the Cairngorms represent one of the largest tracts of comparatively natural and largely untouched woodland in the UK and contain areas of original Caledonian pine forest.
ABOUT THE PARK
Reindeer in the Cairngorms (Adam Goodburn); Loch Insh (Hendy Pollock); Glenshee Ski Resort (Mike Bell)
The National Park is a wildlife paradise and is home to a wide variety of animals. In fact, around 25% of the UK's threatened bird, animal and plant species live within the Park's boundaries. There are eight National Nature Reserves which are open to everyone. Information can be found at www.nnr-scotland.org.uk. Around the Park there are castles, museums and heritage centres portraying the history and culture of the Park and its inhabitants. Balmoral Castle, the summer home of the Royal Family, and Blair Castle, home of Europe’s only private army, are two of our most famous castles.

The most southerly point of the region is Dalwhinnie, a small village just off the A9. Visitors from the south, via the Drumochter Pass, should turn off the A9. Dating back to the 1700s, the village lies at the head of Loch Ericht. Here it meets Glen Truim and is a good base for exploring areas such as Ben Alder. There are good walks along the River Truim and in the Monadliath Mountains. Dalwhinnie's other draw is its distillery - the highest working distillery in Scotland - which produces Dalwhinnie Single Malt, a light, heathery whisky. The excellent visitor centre is open all year round. SERVICES

Also available, unique blending of Canoeing/Malt Whisky experiences.
Three miles north of Newtonmore, at the foothills of the Cairngorm and Monadhliath mountain ranges is Kingussie (Gaelic: Ceann-áGhuibhsaich: the head of the pinewood). A paradise for outdoor activities and those who appreciate invigorating fresh air, dramatic scenery and Highland hospitality, Kingussie is the traditional capital of Badenoch, the area of the upper Spey Valley. It was founded in the late18th century by the Duke Kingussie of Gordon and, at that time, it was a small hamlet surrounded by a vast pine forest. On the opposite side of the River Spey is Ruthven Barracks, the site of an earlier settlement with connections to the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite risings.

Close to Ruthven, in a picturesque setting by the river Tromie, nestles the Speyside Distillery, a unique boutique distillery which distils the range of SPEY brands including the distinctive, locally inspired, Beinn Dubh. In the heart of the town are cafes, restaurants, hotels and guest houses. There are shops for everyday needs and some which have fascinating gifts and mementos. The Iona Gallery has exhibitions by Scottish artists, some of whom live locally. The community and fitness centre has excellent acoustics in its main hall for musical entertainment. It has a state of the art library too with helpful, knowledgeable staff. SERVICES

Cromdale is a rural community situated in the Cairngorms National Park between the Cromdale Hills and the River Spey. Its name is primarily known due to the song "Haughs of Cromdale", written following the 1690 Battle of Cromdale, which marked the effective end of the first Jacobite uprising. When climbing the hills you can see the “piper’s stone” where a piper played during the battle.

Further on is The Queen Victoria Jubilee Cairn from which there are spectacular views of the Cairngorms. Royal Deeside and Donside straddles the River Dee and Don in the heart of the Grampian Mountains. The area is called Royal Deeside due to the long association with the British monarchy after Queen Victoria fell in love with the area and chose to make her summer residence at Balmoral. Today those royal connections are still very much alive. The area covers villages and settlements including Strathdon, Aboyne and Dinnet in the east and to the west, Ballater, Crathie and Braemar. Sixteen miles from Braemar is the winter sports centre at Glenshee which caters for snowsports enthusiasts of all abilities. www.visitcairngorms.com Strathdon is a remote parish in Upper Donside, about 23 miles long and varying from two to eight miles in breadth. The original name was Invernochty, so called from the original church being situated where the waters of the Nochty and the Don meet. Just 18 miles from Tomintoul, Strathdon is an area rich in scenic beauty and places of interest with marvellous opportunities to observe wildlife. As the Don winds its way through the main Strath there are stretches of fine farmland. Further up the valley, around Corgarff, the scenery is still beautiful in character but more dramatic. Here, the Strath becomes narrower and much more wooded, mainly with birch and pine which make a fine contrast in spring and autumn when they are

tinged with shades of almost every hue. The highest part, nearer the source of the Don, is moorland and mountain giving a bleak and barren appearance. Bellabeg is the largest of the small communities scattered throughout Strathdon. Every year on the fourth Saturday of August, the Clansmen of the Lonach Highlanders march through Strathdon to Bellabeg Park for the Lonach Gathering, a unique and friendly Highland Games.
The Doune of Invernochty Strathdon The Doune of Invernochty is an earthwork castle dating from around 800AD. It is a moated motte and was a stronghold of the Mormaer of Mar and is thus sometimes described as the 'Citadel of Mar'.

Some 15 miles from Strathdon, the village backs onto the River Dee, offering convenient access to the Muir of Dinnet and Glen Tanar Estate. Dinnet dates back to the advent of the Deeside Railway which connected Aberdeen to Ballater in 1866. Although the railway closed 100 years later, Dinnet is still a major attraction for walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, archaeologists and historians.

The SSSI reserve (Site of Special Scientific Interest) around Loch Kinnord contains the Burn O’Vat arch and trails of differing steepness, affording views of regenerating woodland and lochans where crannogs gave safe dwellings in prehistoric times. In fact, evidence has been found to show that Dinnet was settled over 5000 years ago. The Crannog near the north end of the Loch was supposedly once used as a prison.
