Walk to Lily Loch, Rothiemurchus The Cairngorms National Park is the largest of Britain’s National Parks. At over 4,500sq km, it is almost twice the size of the Lake District (the next largest National Park in the UK). The area’s mountains have shaped the people, culture, heritage, scenery and character and dominate the Park as well as giving it its name. The National Park is a truly aspirational place for people to live, work, learn and visit. The Park's landscape is an intricate mix of mountains, heather moorland, farmland and woodland. At its heart is a large mountain range which features the highest, coldest and snowiest plateaux in the British Isles and is home to four of the five highest mountains in Scotland: Ben Macdui (1309 m), Cairn Gorm (1245 m), Braeriach (1296 m), Cairn Toul (1293 m). Meanwhile, the forests around the foothills of the Cairngorms represent one of the largest tracts of comparatively natural and largely untouched woodland in the UK and contain areas of original Caledonian pine forest.

The National Park is a wildlife paradise and is home to a wide variety of animals. In fact, around 25% of the UK's threatened bird, animal and plant species live within the Park's boundaries. There are eight National Nature Reserves which are open to everyone. Information can be found at www.nnr-scotland.org.uk. Around the Park there are castles, museums and heritage centres portraying the history and culture of the Park and its inhabitants. Balmoral Castle, the summer home of the Royal Family, and Blair Castle, home of Europe’s only private army, are two of our most famous castles.

In winter the area is well known for its snow sports, with three of Scotland’s five ski resorts situated within the Park's boundaries. Once the snow has

melted the peaks become a haven for hill walkers and climbers. Those visiting the area can try a multitude of activities with everything on offer from archery to horse riding, quad bikes to sailing, windsurfing and gentle canoe trips to exhilarating white water rafting. The Park boasts a variety of golf courses from including 9-hole courses to challenge even the most advanced player, 18-hole championship courses and enjoyable family holiday courses with some of the most spectacular views in Scotland. Whatever you choose to do, with over 100 activities on offer all year round, there really is something for everyone in the Cairngorms National Park.

 ABOUT THE PARK Winter Sports In winter the area is renowned for its snowsports, with three of Scotland’s five ski resorts situated within the Park's boundaries. Whether you’re after traditional downhill skiing or want to try your hand at snow shoeing, ski touring, cross-country skiing, or even snow holing, there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. If you’re planning to visit one of the resorts, each offers a different experience. With over 30km of pisted runs, CairnGorm Mountain offer skiers and boarders off all abilities a great day on the slopes. There is an in-house snow school for those just starting out, some long blue runs for the intermediates and even some blacks and freestyle areas for the more advanced. Located just outside Aviemore, CairnGorm Mountain is the most accessible of all the ski areas and has a wide variety of accommodation available in the local area. It’s also home to Scotland’s only Funicular Railway, an onsite Snow School and Equipment Hire, over 35km of pisted runs and has the biggest freestyle offering in the UK. Glenshee Ski Centre has the largest snow sports area of all Scotland’s resorts, with 25 miles of pisted terrain spread out over four mountains and across three valleys and also the largest number of lifts. With 36 runs offering a diversity of terrain for all standards of skiers and snowboarders

there really is something on offer for everyone; join a class, hire an instructor or get in some race training – the choice is yours. Located on the A93 Glenshee can be approached from the north east via Braemar and from the south west via Perth and Blairgowrie. The Lecht is a family friendly resort 2090 feet (645m) above sea level at the top of the pass between Tomintoul and Strathdon. Winter activities are ideal for all levels of skiers and snowboarders but especially good for families, beginners and intermediates. There are 12 different lifts, including a 3 person chairlift. The thriving ski school is on hand to offer instruction for all ages and abilities and with travellator access to the nursery slopes it couldn’t be made easier to learn to ski or snowboard. Before visiting it is advisable to call the centres for weather and lift status reports.

The area stretches from the community of Dalwhinnie to the town of Grantown-on-Spey and encompassing a number of characterful, individual villages including Cromdale, Boat of Garten, Nethy Bridge, Carrbridge, Dulnain Bridge, Aviemore, Kincraig, Kingussie, Newtonmore and Laggan. The most southerly point of the region is Dalwhinnie, a small village just off the A9. Visitors from the south, via the Drumochter Pass, should turn off the A9. Dating back to the 1700s, the village lies at the head of Loch Ericht. Here it meets Glen Truim and is a good base for exploring areas such as Ben Alder. There are good walks along the River Truim and in the Monadliath Mountains. Dalwhinnie's other draw is its distillery - the highest working distillery in Scotland - which produces Dalwhinnie Single Malt, a light, heathery whisky. The excellent visitor centre is open all year round. SERVICES

The community of Laggan lies in the south end of Badenoch and Strathspey some 8 miles north of Dalwhinnie. Situated on the road to Fort William, the village gives a warm welcome to stalwart travellers entering via the Corrieyairack Pass. The Monadhliath Mountains creates a stunning backdrop to the village.

SEE & DO NATURAL INTERESTS Creag Meagaidh National Nature Reserve Near Dalwhinnie, this varied reserve, stretching from loch side to mountain top includes the magnificent ice-carved crags of Coire Ardair. Gaick Pass / Glen Truim Near Drumochter, traditional route between Atholl and Strathspey via Gaick Pass and Glen Tromie. Dramatic scenery in a remote part of the Cairngorms.

Laggan’s central location makes it an excellent base from which to explore and enjoy outdoor activities - fishing, hill walking, mountaineering, pony trekking, canoeing and ski touring. Mountain bikers can enjoy the thrills and spills of the Wolftrax trails which are suitable for all ability levels. Visitors can walk on well-maintained paths or explore wild places to catch a glimpse of golden eagles, osprey, otters, deer and pine marten and see an abundance of wild flowers, plants and trees.

The Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve provides much geological and botanical interest. For history lovers there is Dun da Lambh Pictish Fort, Druim an Ard 16th century village, and remains of the Newfie Railway, built by Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit loggers who came to help the World War 2 war effort. General Wade’s presence is marked by the ambitious military road and bridges over the Corrieyairack Pass and old Drovers Route to Fort Augustus. This scenic area was used for the BBC television series “Monarch of the Glen” and was also the setting for “Mrs Brown” and ‘Lassie”. Easily accessible from the A9 and some 10 minutes along the A86 from Laggan is the village of Newtonmore. Nestling above the flood plain of the River Spey, with a backdrop of the Monadhliath Mountains, Newtonmore is surrounded by woodland with an abundance of wildlife.

The village has two museums; the Highland Folk Museum and the Clan MacPherson, both of which help visitors understand the culture of the Highlander.

There is an excellent local golf course with rough which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Newtonmore's "Wildcat Trail" is a 10km orbital walk around the edge of the village, taking in the River Spey and its tributary, the Calder, woodland and moorland, together with wonderful views to the Cairngorms and Monadhliath Mountains. Situated between Boat of Garten and Grantown-on-Spey is the forest village of Nethy Bridge. A holiday destination since Victorian times, the village boasts a full range of accommodation options.

A highlight of the year is the Abernethy Highland Games which is held on the second Saturday of August. Started in 1880 they are the oldest traditional Highland Games in Scotland and include piping and dancing competitions, heavy and track events, trade stalls and sideshows.

The River Nethy flows through the centre of the village, past the local shop, butcher, playing fields and Community Centre and under the ancient Telford bridge. www.visitcairngorms.com Travel four miles along the A95 and you will come to the small rural community of Cromdale, situated between the Cromdale Hills and the River Spey. Cromdale is a rural community situated in the Cairngorms National Park between the Cromdale Hills and the River Spey. Its name is primarily known due to the song "Haughs of Cromdale", written following the 1690 Battle of Cromdale, which marked the effective end of the first Jacobite uprising. When climbing the hills you can see the “piper’s stone” where a piper played during the battle.

From the top, at the Coronation Cairn, there are fantastic views of the Spey Valley and north to the coast. Further on is The Queen Victoria Jubilee Cairn from which there are spectacular views of the Cairngorms. Balmenach distillery dates back to the days of illegal farmhouse stills, when smugglers used to walk the Hills of Cromdale. The lovely church of St Ma-Luac and St Bridget down by the river was built in 1809 and can be seen from the adjoining Speyside Way which passes through the village. Lecht Mine Glenlivet Iron was first mined here during the 18th century. The ore was taken by packhorse over the hills to Nethy Bridge for smelting. It was reopened in 1841 to produce manganese ore.

The Livet Pack Horse Bridge Glenlivet This picturesque structure spans the Livet where it tumbles through a narrow, rocky gorge at Bridgend. Two arches of the bridge still survive, the third having been ripped away during the Muckle Spate of 1829. www.visitcairngorms.com Strathdon is a remote parish in Upper Donside, about 23 miles long and varying from two to eight miles in breadth. The original name was Invernochty, so called from the original church being situated where the waters of the Nochty and the Don meet. Just 18 miles from Tomintoul, Strathdon is an area rich in scenic beauty and places of interest with marvellous opportunities to observe wildlife. As the Don winds its way through the main Strath there are stretches of fine farmland. Further up the valley, around Corgarff, the scenery is still beautiful in character but more dramatic. Here, the Strath becomes narrower and much more wooded, mainly with birch and pine which make a fine contrast in spring and autumn when they are

tinged with shades of almost every hue. The highest part, nearer the source of the Don, is moorland and mountain giving a bleak and barren appearance. Bellabeg is the largest of the small communities scattered throughout Strathdon. Every year on the fourth Saturday of August, the Clansmen of the Lonach Highlanders march through Strathdon to Bellabeg Park for the Lonach Gathering, a unique and friendly Highland Games.

The Doune of Invernochty Strathdon The Doune of Invernochty is an earthwork castle dating from around 800AD. It is a moated motte and was a stronghold of the Mormaer of Mar and is thus sometimes described as the 'Citadel of Mar'.

Although the railway closed 100 years later, Dinnet is still a major attraction for walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, archaeologists and historians.

The SSSI reserve (Site of Special Scientific Interest) around Loch Kinnord contains the Burn O’Vat arch and trails of differing steepness, affording views of regenerating woodland and lochans where crannogs gave safe dwellings in prehistoric times. In fact, evidence has been found to show that Dinnet was settled over 5000 years ago. The Crannog near the north end of the Loch was supposedly once used as a prison. Beautiful walks, fishing, cycling and riding plus restaurants and shops are all nearby.

Invermark Castle, Glen Mar South Deeside Located south of Ballater and built in 1526 by the Lindsay family. Invermark Castle is an implausibly tall tower house dating back to the 1300s and built to guard the southern end of the strategic pass leading from Deeside. A "danger keep out" sign on the iron yett barring the original first floor entrance to the castle emphasises that admission is not possible.

www.braemarscotland.co.uk Travel west along the A93 to Braemar, the highest and most mountainous parish in the UK. At more than 1000ft above sea level, the area has 24 Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) with three over 4,000ft. It has the highest 18-hole golf course in Scotland and shares with Perthshire the Cairnwell Pass, which at 2,100ft is the highest through road in the country. For those interested in wildlife, Braemar is a great base for spotting stags, roe deer, red squirrels and golden eagles. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by taking part in any of the wide range of activities on offer including pony trekking, climbing, mountain biking, hang-gliding, skiing or golf. Field sportsmen are spoiled for choice, having easy access to stalking and shooting, as well as to brown trout and salmon angling.

There are weekly evening displays of Highland dancing throughout the summer, along with regular Sunday afternoon pipe band displays in July and August. Devotees of Highland Games can see Her Majesty the Queen at the great Braemar Gathering in September. Crathie is a small hamlet made famous as the location of Balmoral Castle, the private Scottish residence of the Royal Family. Also situated here is Crathie Church, where the family regularly worship during their time at Balmoral. Royal Lochnagar distillery lies in a peaceful fold of a hill near Balmoral. SERVICES

Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve This reserve, at the head of Glen Clova, hosts dramatic landforms and is home to important plant species rarely found elsewhere like yellow mountain saxifrage and roseroot. Glen Clova Glen Clova occupies the valley of the River South Esk which rises on the slopes of Broad Cairn near the border with Aberdeenshire and flows southeastwards into the valley of Strathmore below the Braes of Angus. Glen Doll Beyond Glen Clova is Glen Doll, opening out to the Eastern Cairngorms and sporting the impressive mountains Mayer and Driesh; both Munros. There is an ancient track that starts in Glen Doll and reaches all the way to Braemar. The steep hills and conifer woodland of Glen Doll offer lots of walks. Loch Lee A short climb following a small burn near Cairn Lick leads to a great view of Loch Lee and of Carlochy of Lee, until this point, a hidden corrie loch.

Queen’s Well Glen Mark The Queen’s well is an unusual crown shaped monument built in 1861 in honour of Queen Victoria.
