 ABOUT THE PARK A reflection of winter

Photo: Kenny Ferguson

The Cairngorms National Park is the largest of Britain’s National Parks. At over 4,500sq km, it is almost twice the size of the Lake District (the next largest Park in the UK). The area’s mountains have shaped the people, culture, natural heritage, scenery and character and dominate the Park as well as giving it its name. The Park is also home to ancient pine forests, arctic mountaintops, lochs, rivers and moorland as well as some of the most iconic wildlife, and a quarter of the UK's threatened species. In fact, 50% of the Park is designated as being of national and international importance for nature conservation. The area was voted as one of the top 20 places to visit in the world by the National Geographic Traveller Magazine. It contains four of Scotland’s five highest mountains, is home to three of the country's ski areas and significant stretches of two of Scotland’s major rivers (The Spey and The Dee).

14

From castles, distilleries and museums to gentle strolls and extreme sports, there is an abundance of exciting activities for the entire family to learn and enjoy throughout the year. Not only that, but the area produces a range of high quality food and drink including beef and lamb, salmon and whisky. The Cairngorms National Park is a destination of choice for visitors to explore, participate in a wealth of sports and outdoor activities or simply relax and enjoy the remarkable countryside. From gentle walking to adventurous climbs; bird and nature watching to off-road driving; a warm invitation is extended to come and experience this very special place.

 ABOUT THE PARK Places to Stay

Food and Drink

There is a great selection of friendly accommodation in the Cairngorms National Park to choose from.

Few regions in Scotland encapsulate the traditional and world famous cuisine of the country as well as the Cairngorms - venison from deer that roam free across the hills, beef from Highland cattle, salmon and trout from pristine rivers and lochs, and whisky from age-old distilleries. Beyond those headliners are other delights: bread from a 400 year old mill, world leading gin, award winning beer and wild food for foragers.

If you’re after a hotel, there is a variety of traditional Scottish Highland accommodation, retreats and luxurious resort hotels. The Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the Park is very welcoming and your hosts will be keen to invite you into their home. Each Bed and Breakfast is individual. There are lots of very high quality self-catering properties suitable for all sizes of families or groups; be it a quiet week away in the depths of the countryside or an active break with all village amenities on hand. We have some great hostels, bunkhouses, camping and caravan sites in the Cairngorms National Park. Each offers value for money, a friendly welcome, great facilities and stunning locations. Don’t forget to book in advance if you’re planning to camp or caravan during peak periods.

The Park is home to several whisky distilleries. One of the most famous is the Tomintoul - Glenlivet, which once made the Guinness Book of Records for producing “The Largest Bottle of Scotch Whisky in The World" - 105.3 litres of Tomintoul Speyside Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch whisky aged 14 years; now that is a large dram!

ď š ABOUT THE PARK Things to See and Do The Cairngorms National Park is a world renowned area where both residents and visitors can enjoy an unparalleled range of outdoor recreational opportunities. People are free to explore the mountains and glens, the forests and moorlands and the rivers and lochs of the Park. They can do so on foot, in a wheelchair, on horse-back, on a bicycle or even in a boat or canoe, as long as they do so in a responsible manner, with respect for other people and in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

The Park's landscape is a complex mix of mountains, heather moorland, farmland and woodland. At its heart is a large mountain range which features the highest, coldest and snowiest plateaux in the British Isles and is home to four of the five highest mountains in Scotland: Ben Macdui (1309 m), Cairn Gorm (1245 m), Braeriach (1296 m), Cairn Toul (1293 m). Meanwhile, the forests around the foothills of the Cairngorms represent one of the largest tracts of comparatively natural and largely untouched woodland in the UK and contain areas of original Caledonian pine forest.

 ABOUT THE PARK

Photo: Gerry McFarlane

Photo: Neil Mair

The National Park is a wildlife paradise and is home to a wide variety of animals. In fact, around 25% of the UK's threatened bird, animal and plant species live within the Park's boundaries. There are eight National Nature Reserves which are open to everyone. Information can be found at www.nnr-scotland.org.uk. Around the Park there are castles, museums and heritage centres portraying the history and culture of the Park and its inhabitants. Balmoral Castle, the summer home of the Royal Family, and Blair Castle, home of Europe’s only private army, are two of our most famous castles. In winter the area is well known for its snow sports, with three of Scotland’s five ski resorts situated within the Park's boundaries. Once the snow has

melted the peaks become a haven for hill walkers and climbers. Those visiting the area can try a multitude of activities with everything from archery to horse riding, quad bikes, sailing, windsurfing and gentle canoe trips to exhilarating white water rafting on offer. The Park also has a variety of golf courses to choose from, including 9-hole courses to challenge even the most advanced player, 18-hole championship courses and enjoyable family holiday courses with some of the most spectacular views in Scotland. Whatever you choose to do, with over 100 activities on offer all year round, there really is something for everyone in the Cairngorms National Park.

 ABOUT THE PARK Winter Sports

Snowboarding at CairnGorm Mountain

In winter the area is well known for its snow sports, with three of Scotland’s five ski resorts situated within the Park's boundaries: CairnGorm Mountain, Glenshee and The Lecht. Whether you’re after traditional downhill skiing or want to try your hand at snow shoeing, ski touring, cross-country skiing, or even snow holing, there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. If you’re planning to visit one of the resorts, each offers a different experience. The Cairngorms has the most testing terrain for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The Lecht is without a doubt the best resort for total novices while Glenshee offers those of an intermediate level a few challenging runs. Getting to any of the resorts shouldn’t pose a problem with good air, rail and road links. Before visiting it is advisable to call the centre for weather and lift status reports. CairnGorm Mountain offers special parks for sledging and snowboarding and there is a wide range of ski runs to suit all abilities. Numerous

snow sport schools offer all levels of instruction and full hire facilities are available both on the mountain and in the Aviemore area. Glenshee has the largest snow sports area of all Scotland’s resorts, with 25 miles of pisted terrain spread out over four mountains and across three valleys and also the largest number of lifts. The type and level of runs are extensive and the terrain offers something for everyone. The Lecht is a family friendly resort offering an ideal location for novices and families. The thriving ski school is on hand to offer instruction for all ages and abilities and with travelator access to the nursery slopes it couldn’t be made easier to learn to ski or snowboard.

ď š ANGUS GLENS Angus Glens

Glorious Glen Clova Photo: Cairngorms National Park Authourity

wwww.angusglens.co.uk www.visitcairngorms.com The Angus Glens are a series of glens all with their own special characteristics. Glen Prosen nestles between Isla and Clova, and above that the watershed of Glen Isla links to Glen Esk. There is no road only hill tracks, but motorists can make a circular route from Kirriemuir. Glen Isla is the most westerly of the five Angus Glens and the only one where the road exits to the north as well as the south, so you can drive through the Grampian hills to Braemar and Deeside. Glen Clova is a glen of spectacular scenery. It is the glen for wildlife, with a National Nature Reserve. The Memus/Cortachy includes many settlements as well as three glens: Glen Moy, Glen Quiech and Glen Ogil.

The village of Memus lies to the south of Glen Quiech along the edge of the White Burn. Menmuir offers easy access to all five Glens. The population is a scattered one, living mainly in farmhouses or cottages. The least familiar to visitors must be Lethnot. A great sense of peace is felt here among the bare slopes and heather clad hills in this Glen nestling behind the two Caterthun Hill Forts. Glenesk, lying at the foot of the Grampian mountain range, is the most easterly of the Angus Glens. A traditional glen, it is divided into four privately owned estates and is home to the Glenesk Folk Museum. ď š ANGUS GLENS Glen Clova Glen Clova occupies the valley of the River South Esk which rises on the slopes of Broad Cairn near the border with Aberdeenshire and flows southeastwards into the valley of Strathmore below the Braes of Angus. Glen Doll Beyond Glen Clova is Glen Doll, opening out to the Eastern Cairngorms and sporting the impressive mountains Mayer and Driesh; both Munros. There is an ancient track that starts in Glen Doll and reaches all the way to Braemar. The steep hills and conifer woodland of Glen Doll offer lots of walks.

www.boatofgarten.com www.visitcairngorms.com The village of Boat of Garten lies in the heart of Strathspey within the Cairngorms National Park and is an ideal location from which to explore the local area; close to the action of Aviemore, but far enough away to ensure a quiet break. This picturesque village has plenty to offer visitors, tourists and residents with an abundance of wildlife, well marked woodland and river walks and cycle routes as well as loch and river fishing, tennis and golf on the magnificent 18-hole course designed by James Braid. There is a choice of excellent restaurants, accommodation providers and shops.

If you want to arrive in style climb aboard the Strathspey Railway and “steam” into the village! Alternatively, you can board the train at “The Boat” and take a trip to Broomhill, better known as 'Glenbogle Station' from the BBC TV’s Monarch of the Glen. Popular walking routes, Sustrans Route 7 and the Speyside Way, both come through the village which is perfect for an overnight stop or a bite of lunch. For those with children the play park is adjacent to the Community Hall and is a firm favourite with younger members of the family.

A haven of peace and tranquillity

Photo: Stan Daniels

www.braemarscotland.co.uk www.visitcairngorms.com Braemar is the highest and most mountainous parish in the UK at more than 1000ft above sea level. Within the area there are 24 Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) with three over 4,000ft. It has the highest 18-hole golf course in Scotland and shares with Perthshire the Cairnwell Pass, which at 2,100ft is the highest through road in the country. For those interested in wildlife, Braemar is a great base for spotting stags, roe deer, red squirrels and golden eagles. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by taking part in any of the wide range of activities on offer including pony trekking, climbing, mountain biking, hang-gliding, skiing or golf. Field sportsmen are spoiled for

choice, having easy access to stalking and shooting, as well as to brown trout and salmon angling. There are weekly evening displays of Highland dancing throughout the summer, along with regular Sunday afternoon pipe band displays in July and August. Devotees of Highland Games can accompany Her Majesty the Queen to the great Braemar Gathering in September. Crathie is a small hamlet made famous as the location of Balmoral Castle, the private Scottish residence of the Royal Family. Also situated here is Crathie Church, where the family regularly worship during their time at Balmoral. Royal Lochnagar distillery lies in a peaceful fold of a hill near Balmoral.

Photo: John Diffey

www.visitcairngorms.com Cromdale is a rural community situated in the Cairngorms National Park between the Cromdale Hills and the River Spey. Its name is primarily known due to the song "Haughs of Cromdale", written following the 1690 Battle of Cromdale, which marked the effective end of the first Jacobite uprising. When climbing the hills you can see the “piper’s stone” where a piper played during the battle.

From the top, at the Coronation Cairn, there are fantastic views of the Spey Valley and north to the coast. Further on is The Queen Victoria Jubilee Cairn from which there are spectacular views of the Cairngorms. Balmenach distillery dates back to the days of illegal farmhouse stills, when smugglers used to walk the Hills of Cromdale. The lovely church of St Ma-Luac and St Bridget down by the river was built in 1809 and can be seen from the adjoining Speyside Way which passes through the village. The area boasts a range of traditional shooting and fishing estates.

www.visitballater.com www.discoverroyaldeeside.com www.visitcairngorms.com Dinnet is a small village situated on the A93 between Ballater and Aboyne at the eastern entrance to the Cairngorms National Park. It backs onto the River Dee, offering convenient access to the Muir of Dinnet and Glen Tanar Estate. Dinnet dates back to the advent of the Deeside Railway which connected Aberdeen to Ballater in 1866. Although the railway closed 100 years later, Dinnet is still a major attraction for walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, archaeologists and historians.

96

The SSSI reserve (Site of Special Scientific Interest) around Loch Kinnord contains the Burn O’Vat arch and trails of differing steepness, affording views of regenerating woodland and lochans where crannogs gave safe dwellings in prehistoric times. In fact, evidence has been found to show that Dinnet was settled over 5000 years ago. The Crannog near the north end of the Loch was supposedly once used as a prison. Beautiful walks, fishing, cycling and riding plus restaurants and shops are all nearby.

ww.dulnainbridge.com www.visitcairngorms.com Dulnain Bridge is made up of two communities, Dulnain Bridge itself centred around the 18th century bridge, and the crofting community of Skye-of-Curr which stretches for about a mile to the south. The surrounding forests of mature Caledonian pines contain many rare and interesting species including endangered capercaillie, Scottish crossbill, the small but beautiful crested tit, buzzard, eagle, osprey and red squirrel. Curr Wood, on the south and east of the village has the country's largest population of twinflower which shares the forest floor with a tiny orchid called creeping ladies tresses.

100

Steam trains from Aviemore terminate at Broomhill Station, on the outskirts of the village, otherwise known as “Glenbogle Station” from the popular TV series “Monarch of the Glen”. Other points of interest include a good display of a type of glaciated rock called 'Roches Moutonnes' and evidence of a large Pictish settlement at Balintomb Farm, where burial mounds and standing stones can be seen. For walkers there is a wide choice including a circular walk around Dulnain Bridge taking in woods, fields and rivers; all the time with changing views of the hills.

Snowsports enthusiasts at Glenshee www.glenofthefairies.co.uk www.visitcairngorms.com Glenshee is Scotland’s hidden route north to the Highlands, a beautiful Highland glen and a southern gateway to the Cairngorms National Park and Royal Deeside. The Glen is a magical place steeped in history, known in Gaelic as Gleann Shith - the Glen of the Fairies. The Spittal of Glenshee, where 4 glens meet, and surrounding area boasts a fantastic variety of accommodation and things to do. The landscape is spectacular; fertile farmland gives way to rolling hills and, at the head of the Glen, some of the highest peaks in Perthshire form a rugged landscape. The facilities for walkers, anglers, shooters, golfers and cyclists are excellent.

Glenshee’s wild mountainous terrain makes it one of Scotland’s most popular ski areas and home to some of the most breathtaking winter mountainous scenery Scotland has to offer. Historic Ruthven Barracks

Photo: Steve Neal

www.kingussie.co.uk www.visitcairngorms.com At the foothills of the Cairngorm and Monadhliath Mountain ranges lies Kingussie, a paradise for outdoor activities and those who appreciate invigorating fresh air, dramatic scenery and Highland hospitality. Kingussie (Gaelic: Ceann-ĂĄGhuibhsaich: the head of the pinewood) is the traditional capital of Badenoch, the area of the upper Spey Valley in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. It was founded in the late 18th century by the Duke Kingussie of Gordon and, at that time, it was a small hamlet surrounded by a vast pine forest.

On the opposite side of the River Spey is Ruthven Barracks, the site of an earlier settlement with connections to the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite risings. In the heart of the town are cafes, restaurants, hotels and guest houses. There are shops for everyday needs and some which have fascinating gifts and mementos. The Iona Gallery has exhibitions by Scottish artists, some of whom live locally. The community and fitness centre has excellent acoustics in its main hall for musical entertainment. It has a state of the art library too with helpful, knowledgeable staff.

www.visitcairngorms.com www.laggan.com The community of Laggan is in the south end of Badenoch and Strathspey. It straddles the entrance to the Cairngorms National Park on the road from Fort William, and welcomes stalwart travellers entering via the Corrieyairack Pass. Visitors from the south via Drumochter Pass turn off the A9 at Dalwhinnie and soon see Laggan with the Monadhliath Mountains as a stunning backdrop. Laggan’s central location makes it an excellent base from which to explore and enjoy outdoor activities - fishing, hill walking, mountaineering, pony trekking, canoeing and ski touring. Mountain bikers can enjoy the thrills and spills of the Wolftrax trails. Visitors can walk on well maintained paths or explore wild places to catch a glimpse of golden eagles, osprey, otters, deer and pine marten and see an abundance of wild flowers,

plants and trees. The Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve provides much geological and botanical interest. For history lovers there is Dun da Lambh Pictish Fort, Druim an Ard 16th century village, and remains of the Newfie Railway, built by Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit loggers who came to help the World War 2 war effort. General Wade’s presence is marked by the ambitious military road and bridges over the Corrieyairack Pass and old Drovers Route to Fort Augustus. This scenic area was used for the BBC television series “Monarch of the Glen” and was also the setting for “Mrs Brown” and the more recent release of ‘Lassie”. The Telford bridge spanning the River Nethy www.nethybridge.com www.visitcairngorms.com Nethy Bridge has been a holiday destination since Victorian times and boasts a full range of accommodation options. The area has easy access to a vast range of activities and being away from the main roads it remains a haven of peace. The River Nethy flows through the centre of the village, past the local shop, butcher, playing fields and Community Centre and under the ancient Telford bridge. Nearby is Explore Abernethy where the mountain, forest and historical way of life are interpreted. Walks take place during the summer and The Speyside Way route also passes through the village.

A highlight of the year is the Abernethy Highland Games which is held on the second Saturday of August. Started in 1880 they are the oldest traditional Highland Games in Scotland and include piping and dancing competitions, heavy and track events, trade stalls and sideshows. Over 100 pipers make up the spectacular massed bands who march onto the field followed by members of the Clan Grant Society. Travel to Nethy Bridge by road or using the local bus services to and from Aviemore, Grantown-on-Spey and Inverness. Or you can take the Strathspey Steam Railway train to nearby Broomhill from Aviemore or Boat of Garten.

Corgarff Castle www.visitcairngorms.com Strathdon is a remote parish in Upper Donside, about 23 miles long and varying from two to eight miles in breadth. The original name was Invernochty, so called from the original church being situated where the waters of the Nochty and the Don meet. Strathdon is an area rich in scenic beauty and places of interest with marvellous opportunities to observe wildlife. As the Don winds its way through the main Strath there are stretches of fine farmland. Further up the valley, around Corgarff, the scenery is still beautiful in character but more dramatic. Here, the Strath becomes narrower and much more wooded, mainly with birch and pine which make a fine contrast in spring

and autumn when they are tinged with shades of almost every hue. The highest part, nearer the source of the Don, is moorland and mountain giving a bleak and barren appearance. Bellabeg is the largest of the small communities scattered throughout Strathdon. Every year on the fourth Saturday of August, the Clansmen of the Lonach Highlanders march through Strathdon to Bellabeg Park for the Lonach Gathering, a unique and friendly Highland Games. Strathdon is steeped in history; visitors can discover stories of the past at Corgarff and Glenbuchat Castles and explore the Doune of Invernochty. Nearby the Lecht Centre offers activities year round, including skiing and snowboarding in winter and mountain biking in the summer.
