of Sydney and is considered the
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the spectacular Sydney Harbour, Manly sits on a beautiful peninsula, seven nautical miles north-east of Sydney. Manly was named by Capt. Arthur Phillip in 1788 for the indigenous people living here: “Their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place”. Today Manly is mostly famous for its popular beaches – a long stretch of sand on the ocean side, running from Queenscliff to Manly Beach, followed by the Fairy Bower rock pool and Shelly Beach. Furthermore you’ll find a number of stunning beaches on the harbour side. A symbolic feature of Manly are the prominent Norfolk Island pine trees on both the ocean and harbour beaches. In 2012, the 4km stretch between Freshwater Beach and Shelly Beach has been declared “Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve”. Read more about Manly’s rich surfing history on page 65.
gateway to Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches. “7 miles from Sydney and 1000 miles from care” – a slogan used by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company in 1940, is still the best way to describe ‘Australia’s Premier Seaside Resort’.
No visit to Sydney is complete without coming here.

THE GREAT SPIRIT & ENERGY OF MANLY Manly is more than a place, it is a lifestyle made possible by the people who live and work in Manly. They are the beautiful energy that completes Manly and breathe life into this incomparable seaside village. We aim to spotlight a few of the great characters you will meet when you visit our beautiful seaside village.
Meet Mark Stanley Feel the Manly drive for community when you meet the ever smiling Mark Stanley. Mark who besides his role as General Manager of Quest Manly, is the President of the Manly Chamber of Commerce and is immersed, every day, in making Manly a better place for everyone to enjoy. A family man who loves his life in Manly, Mark says “ Manly is blessed by the caliber of people who inhabit the place. So many good people with good intentions, it is incomparable. We have everything here from Surfing to the boardroom and more, my goal is to give back to the community. I want to create a unified voice for the business community, support small business growth and entrepreneurial visions, and generally bring people together to make Manly a happy and productive pace to live. Living here is like being on holiday every day and we welcome all visitors to enjoy Manly with us.”
Meet Diego Acevedo Llosa (aka Ceasius Kakius) Diego is all about passion. Diego epitomises the intellect and creative spirit of Manly. Meeting Diego is like tuning into the energy of Manly’s creative passions. Hailing originally from Peru, Diego loves, and lives his Manly lifestyle to the fullest. Art, passion, surfing and philosophy drive this free spirited artist and business man. Holder of a masters degree in business and marketing, Diego can be found at Painters Gallery and Art Hub Manly, or on the waves surfing, where he says many of his inspirational opportunities have originated. Over the years, Painters’ Gallery has become a strong portal for introducing Art and Culture into the Northern Beaches. The cross-cultural sharing of ideas, people and their cultures sparked his inner desire to create a community, and to facilitate others to do the same. The visions goes beyond art and culture, but rather to create a space to facilitate cross-pollination between people of all walks in life. Art Hub Manly was born, “creating a new way of living, through our collaborative community and contemporary coworking spaces, we are gradually dissolving the lines between work and play. We offer a space that is deeply connected with the ocean, its waves and the surf. There is both therapy and fun associated with the majestic ocean, and we invite you to add that unique flavor to your work, lifestyle, and relationships with others.” Diegos greeting says it all “Good vibes and hugs”

Meet Joel Coleman The Manly creative spirit comes alive through the lens of talented photographer, Joel Coleman. Joel is witness to the spirit and energy of Manly on a regular basis, recording the images it offers and capturing it’s many beautiful faces and moods and then sharing the images at his Manly gallery and through his “Saltmotion Photographic Journal” online feed. Joel moved to Manly several years ago and set up his gallery in the heart of Manly. Says Joel “I spend my life travelling the world photographing for my gallery. Throughout my career I have photographed and experienced many of the worlds most beautiful places. My aim is to share those experiences through my photography. Photographically the natural environment of Manly offers more than I could ever hope for and living amongst the people, food, atmosphere and creativity constantly reminds me how incredibly lucky I am to call Manly home. If asked to describe a classic Manly Beach morning, this image would have to be it. The sun breaking through the clouds, the silhouetted pine trees and four people getting about their morning in four different ways. Head down to the beach virtually any morning and you will likely see a scene like this one”. ‘Image shown is ‘Three Pines Four People’
Meet Joe Brunner Manly Fast Ferry customers know him as the smiling face that greets them as they make their way to catch their fast ferry to Circular Quay. Born in Armidale, Joe moved to Manly 3 years ago with a Manly local, his lovely wife Pam. Joe loves his Manly life, the people interaction and the variety that the job entails. Joe has become an integral part of the Manly wharf sales team and his welcoming smile and can do attitude epitomizes the Manly friendly spirit. Next time you are traveling to the city via Manly Fast Ferry keep a look out for Joe, often seen providing customer assistance at the Manly Fast Ferry sales counter left hand side on the far end of Manly Wharf.
Meet Sergeant Les Wellings Les Wellings, a Manly Council employee before the war, served at Fromelles, Messines, the Somme, Ypres and other zones. He survived the war, rejoined Manly Council and eventually became Town Clerk, approximately equivalent to today’s position of General Manager, before retiring in 1957. Wellings Reserve is named after him.

LITTLE MANLY
THE ‘QUICK TRIP’:
You only have a couple of hours and want to make the most of your time in Manly? A short stroll from the wharf through ‘The Corso’ – where you’ll find a great variety of shops, cafés, restaurants and the weekend markets, will take you to Manly Beach – famous for surfing. From there, go for an easy 15 minute walk along the ocean beach promenade to Shelly Beach and to the lookouts on top of the Bower headland to soak in fantastic views over Manly and along the coast (see page 87 for more details on this walk).
16
For those with a little bit more time, it’s a great idea to hire a bike and explore more of Manly, cruise along the beautiful beachfront, from Queenscliff to Shelly Beach and further to Manly Lagoon or the nearby beaches and Manly Dam, famous for its mountain bike trails (see map on page 90/91). Go for a walk to North Head and/or along the scenic coastline to the Spit Bridge (see pages 86/89 and the map on pages 90/91). See the adorable little penguins, giant stingrays, turtles and a myriad of marine life at Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary or take a plunge with Shark Dive Xtreme. Divers will love the Cabbage Tree Bay Marine Reserve. The escorted Shelly Beach Discovery Dive is an experience that will long be remembered. Paddle a kayak or SUP around the calm waters of Manly Harbour or for the more daring – fly skyward with a parasail and take in the amazing views from above! Visit the Manly Art Gallery and Museum with changing visual art and exhibitions or – if you are interested in how to make award-winning beer, the 4 Pines Brewery Tour is for you. At the Manly Environment Centre you will find information on how to make life more sustainable.

GENUINE DIDJERIDOOS What is a Didjeridoo? The “Didge” is a wind instrument originally found in Arnhem Land, Northern Australia and is quite possibly the world’s oldest musical instrument. It is made from limbs and tree trunks hollowed out by termites (insects), cut and cleaned out with a stick or hot coals. The instrument produces a low-pitch, resonant sound with complex rhythmic patterns and was originally used as an accompaniment to chants and songs.
HAND PAINTED ARTEFACTS The meaning behind the Art “In Aboriginal languages, there is not one definition for the term art. Aboriginal art is our expression, our culture, our living. An extension of our identity. Not just an item for a wall or living room. Aboriginal art is painting, sculpture, dance film making, photography song writing etc.” Brenda Croft ñ Boomalli
CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY Supporting Indigenous culture All fine art paintings are sold accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, artist profile and are supported by images of the artist with the work. The Gallery encourages its customers and collectors to be aware and concerned that aboriginal people should directly benefit from sales.

Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve With a century-long surfing heritage, Manly is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Australia. Manly was the site of Australia’s first legal bathing (1902), hosted the first known body surfing contest in 1908 and was the launch site of Australia’s first official surf patrol boat (1907). The first recorded attempt to ride a surfboard took place in 1912, when C. D. Patterson challenged the waves on a solid board he imported from Hawaii. In 1964, the first World Surfboard Riding Championship was hosted in Manly. Local surfer Bernard ‘Midget’ Farrelly won the men’s title and Phyllis O’Donnell the women’s. Freshwater famously played host to Duke Kahanamoku’s surfing demonstration in the Summer months of 1914-1915. Perched high on the headland overlooking Freshwater Beach is a monument to the man who brought the sport of Surfing to Australia. The splendid bronze statue of the legendary Duke Kahanamoku was donated and installed by the Harbord Diggers Memorial Club in 1994. In March 2012, Manly-Freshwater was honoured to become the first World Surfing Rerserve in Australia and the third in the world due to its outstanding surf breaks as well as its rich surfing history and culture. The Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve stretches over 4km from Harbord Point to Fairy Bower, including Freshwater, Queenscliff, North Steyne, Manly and Shelly Beach and Fairy Bower Point. Besides the many popular beach breaks, it hosts the well-known Queenscliff Bombora, Frenchmans Reef and the infamous Fairy Bower, home to some of the largest waves ridden in Australia.

LEARN AUSTRALIAN SURFING STYLE Manly Beach is a popular destination for the learning surfer. If you haven’t surfed before or you’d simply like to refresh your skills and your knowledge about the beach, it is always a good idea to take lessons at an accredited surf school. Qualified surf instructors will show you everything you need to know to get on your feet quickly, point out the best and safest spots for beginners and how to behave in the water to avoid dangers. Dropping in on other surfers is probably the worst thing a learning surfer can do. So, to be respected by other surfers make sure you start by respecting them and follow standard rules. Like any other sport, the key to learning is practice. “Surfers’ Code of Etiquette” signs, shaped like surfboards and complete with easy-to-follow illustrations, placed at North Steyne Beach and the boat shed at Queenscliff, outlining the basic “rules” of surfing etiquette (see illustration to the right).

It’s a fairly easy walk from Manly: simply follow the path around Queenscliff headland (or take the steps; the path requires some climbing) and continue past the rockpool at the northern end of Freshwater Beach. Take a small detour to see the Duke Kahanamoku statue on the headland near the Harbord Diggers (for more information on Manly’s rich surfing history see page 65). A scenic boardwalk along the coast will take you to Curl Curl Beach.

> WALKING GUIDE Cabbage Tree Bay Coastal Walk
North Head
Views to Sydney’s city skyline and the harbour (Fairfax Walk)
Cabbage Tree Bay Coastal Walk Starting at Manly Life Saving Club, South Steyne (at the southern end of Manly Beach) and following the stunning ocean foreshore to picturesque Shelly Beach, this walk is a Manly favourite.
This walk takes about 15 mins (30 mins from Manly Wharf), is flat and suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
Shelly Beach to North Head Sanctuary
walking guide
Gain an insight into Cabbage Tree Bay’s unique marine life, plants, animals, history and attractions by viewing the eco-sculptures at the Shelly Beach end of the walkway. These sculptures embrace the harmony and serenity of the surrounding natural beauty, each of them represents a special feature of Cabbage Tree Bay. Keep an eye out for water dragons basking in the sun.
Combine this walk with the Cabbage Tree Coastal walk to experience Manly’s diversity. Allow 1 hour from Shelly Beach (approx. 1.5 hours from Manly Wharf). Rich in history, North Head Sanctuary was deemed a special place by the Aboriginal people. It is home to native animals including the locally endangered long-nosed bandicoot. Apart from amazing views and diverse flora and fauna, along the walk you will encounter a sandstone wall built in 1880 and WWII gun placements.
From there you can take bus #135 back to Manly Wharf or continue to explore more of North Head Sanctuary, and Fairfax walk, or make your way back to Manly Wharf via Collins Beach (Spring Cove) and Little Manly (2 – 2.5 hrs). See map on pages 88/89.
At Shelly Beach, take the steps leading up to the car park at the top of Bower headland where several viewpoints overlook famous surf breaks and offer spectacular coastal views. Follow the track through Parkhill Reserve, past the “hole in the wall” and a “man-made lake”, a former quarry site. Stay right and cross Blue Fish Drive where a steel grid track leads to the North Head Sanctuary and the Visitors Centre, located at North Fort.

Sanctuary Loop, North Head Sanctuary Discover the natural beauty and military history of North Head. Once a School of Artillery where Army gunners lived and trained, the headland is now a sanctuary. Explore pristine heathland, patches of rare banksia scrub and a hanging swamp. Walking tracks lead to hidden vantage points offering dramatic ocean vistas.
Combine your walk with a delicious brunch or afternoon tea at the Bella Vista Café (open Mon– Fri: 9am – 4pm and Sat/Sun: 8:30am – 5pm, see below) or grab a coffee, fresh juice and snack to go.
The walk takes about 1.5-2 hours, highlights include the many flowering plants, diverse birdlife, military remnants and views of the city, harbour and ocean. For more information and a self-guided tour pick up a brochure from the Visitor Centre located at North Fort (open daily, 10am – 4pm).

Fairfax Walk This 1km walk connects three lookouts and takes about 20 minutes, but we recommend you allow plenty of time and bring a picnic — the views are amazing! Ideal for families with children, the Fairfax Walk is also partially wheelchair accessible (some steps are required to access one of the viewing platforms). The short sealed circuit track starts at the end of North Head Scenic Drive and loops around the top of North Head, offering dramatic cliff scenery looking out to the endless Pacific Ocean and majestic Sydney Harbour. This walk is also very popular with whale watchers during the migration season (from mid May through to November). Interpretive signs along the way provide information about the whales. Getting here: Bus #135 (3 times a day all the way to North Head) By car: Take Darley Rd/North Head Scenic Drive (ticketed parking available at $4 flat rate, take coins) Bike: Manly Bike Tours hires bikes from $15, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended (steep road) Walk: Combine this walk with the Cabbage Tree and Gunners’ Walk (approx. 4–4.5 hrs for the full loop) or walk up Darley Rd/North Head Scenic Drive (approx. 1 hr from Manly Wharf) 88

The Great War, 1914 to 1918, had a vast and enduring impact on the heritage and culture of our local population. In the ManlyWarringah area, one in every six men who enlisted for service abroad during the Great War did not come home, and close to 1,500 residents of the Sydney seaside suburb of Manly, men and women alike, enlisted for service. In 1914 they were swept up, along with hundreds of thousands of other Australian men and women, in the Great War, the nation’s worst trauma of the twentieth century.

Anzac Centenary - A tribute to our Troops
Manly council has released a Commemorative book providing a poignant glimpses of Manly’s World War One veterans. This beautiful book ‘Commemorating 100 Years of Anzac’ gives us some brief, touching insights into the lives of the men and women who shouldered such great burdens and made such sacrifices as our own Great War volunteers. Get one of these commemorative books visit the Manly Council. In August 1915, as Australian troops battled on the Gallipoli Peninsula, a World War One recruitment march wound its way through Manly. Manly Environment Centre – In the heart of nature Manly Council’s Manly Environment Centre (MEC) started in 1991 as a unique combination of community, Council and local corporate sponsors. It was the first Australian suburban environment centre and is well established as a pro-active organisation dedicated to the health of our local environment. As an action and education based centre, the shopfront houses more than 5,000 publications and other resources, the largest collection of environmental education materials accessible to the community in Australia. Council staff and dedicated volunteers offer a range of activities and initiatives to the local community to help inspire and lead them towards sustainability. Most importantly, information is provided to people, empowering them to take action and make lifestyle choices which will create positive outcomes for themselves, the wider community (locally and globally) and the environment.
