Here are some of the best things to do and see around the city. of Sydney Harbour, Barangaroo Reserve features lookouts, extensive walking and cycling trails, idyllic coves, picnic spots and places for quiet contemplation. The park also glories in unique rock pools created from the 10,000 blocks of honeycolored sandstone excavated directly from the site during the project. The park design juxtaposes the rugged, sandstone, pre -1836 shoreline of
Sydney Harbour against the 21st Century skyline of the modern city. After more than a century, the once-scarred promontory is now visually reunited with Goat Island and its sister headlands at Balls Head, McMahons Point and Ballast Point. Named after Barangaroo, a Cammeraygal woman who was a powerful voice in the early days of colonial Sydney, the reserve is rich in Indigenous and cultural history and remains an area of great significance for Australians across all cultures. SYDNEY IS a sprawling city of more than four million people, spread over a vast coastal basin with Sydney Harbour as its centrepiece. To the north lies another beautiful waterway – Pittwater and the Hawkesbury – and beyond that the scenic Central Coast and
the Hunter Valley winegrowing region. To the west the city is backed by a section of the Great Dividing Range which runs all the way down the east coast of Australia. The part of the range behind Sydney is called the Blue Mountains – now designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage area for its stunning natural beauty. South of the city you’ll find the Southern Highlands, Wollongong and the South Coast – home to some of the most beautiful beaches and coastal towns in Australia. So there’s a lot to see and do around Sydney other than the city itself. Like most world cities Sydney is served by an excellent public transport system, made up of fast electric

ONCE YOU’RE in the city itself the best way to get a feeling for the general layout of the place and all the main points of interest is to start at the very top – the top of Sydney Tower that is. The viewing deck at the top is now known as Sydney Tower Eye. The entrance to the Sydney Tower Eye is on the 5th Level of the Westfield shopping centre on the corner of Pitt, Castlereagh and Market Streets. Once you’ve bought your ticket and checked in you’ll enter the new 4D cinema. This unique film, included in the ticket price, unveils a whole new dimension to Sydney – its spectacular footage transporting you along the beaches, around the harbour and right inside the landmarks and events that are such an integral part of the city. The experience is taken to the 4th dimension by evocative in-theatre effects like wind, water and fire bringing the whole scenario to life. Once you’ve seen the film you’ll be whisked by a lift up to the Observation Deck, 250 metres above street level. Here sweeping views of the Sydney metropolis stretch out for miles and miles around. And the whole experience is made even more interesting since they’ve installed new high-powered binoculars and multi-lingual touch screens to give you an array of facts about the spectacular Sydney views you are seeing.

harbour SYDNEY IS built around a beautiful natural harbour, with much of the foreshore dedicated as National Park. Easy walking trails abound, and some of the best views of the city can be had from the heights around Vaucluse (on the route of the Bondi Explorer bus) or from Bradley’s Head near Taronga Zoo. But you don’t have to just look at the harbour from the shore, because Sydney is well-served by a wide variety of excellent harbour cruises
and ferry services. Most cruises depart from Circular Quay or from the eastern side of Darling Harbour near the Sydney Aquarium wharf. The choice ranges from short jaunts of about one hour to cruises lasting a whole day or evening, from simple crossharbour ferry-boat rides to luxury excursions on million-dollar yachts. Or the thrill of seeing giant whales up close. We’ve listed a selection of the best we could find on the next few pages. Enjoy!

Re-confirming your flight home? YOU SHOULD re-confirm your outbound flight with your airline 72 hours prior to departure. And remember, these days all overseas airlines ask that you check-in at least two hours before scheduled boarding time to allow for heightened security checks. You’ll need to allow about 30 minutes to get to the airport by taxi from the city, but only about 10 to12 minutes if you use the AirportLink train. You can catch the AirportLink from platform 23 at Central Station or from Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St James or Museum stations in the city. Trains start running at about 5am and continue until around midnight – roughly every 10 minutes in peak hours and every 15 minutes at off-peak times. But if you can’t make it to one of the city train stations there’s the Airbus Airport Shuttle bus service, which will pick you up from right outside your city or near-city hotel and take
