WINTER PROJECTS Happy New Year! Stay inside, warm, and productive with a new home improvement project. While you won’t want to be outside in the cold this time of year, there’s always something to improve around the house. Try out these projects to stay busy and keep your home looking its best in 2019. REPAINT A ROOM!

DIY PLANK ACCENT WALL Why not try out a new accent wall? An alternative to creating a painted accent wall, the wood planks look more rustic and different! By using a variety of dimensional lumber, sanding it down, staining it, and affixing it to your wall, you can make your own DIY plank feature. Our wide selection of different stains will give your wall some pop, and stand out from the rest.

Winter is the perfect time for this project, no guilt for staying indoors, and you can spruce up the house for the new year! Here are some helpful tips to consider when planning a re-paint job: • Start with the right tools! It is vital that you start any painting project with both high quality paints and applicators. You will likely spend more money up-front for these materials, but in the long run, you will save yourself both time and money. • Be prepared and proactive! Take measurements before heading to the store to purchase. Always purchase a little extra paint in case you need to apply touch-ups in the future. • Before applying the primer and paint, ensure proper ventilation in the area you will be painting, especially if using oil-based paint. A new sale each week ensures that your painting project won’t break the bank! Come and see the wide variety of paint to choose from, including Benjamin Moore, SICO, and Rona.

Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays. Monday to Friday Saturday and Sunday

HAPPY NEW YEAR, MISSION! I can't believe how fast 2018 flew by! I guess that’s what happens when you're having fun. My rookie year as the owner of What's On! has taught me so much and allowed me to meet some amazing #LOVEMISSIONBC people. I'm extremely thankful to all the businesses, organizations and friends who have supported me on this venture. It has been exciting to see Mission’s

businesses, organizations and the sense of community grow throughout the year. I listened to stories and learned from the people that make Mission so rich and diverse. When reflecting on 2018, I love knowing that Mission comes together in times of need and in times of celebration. When you browse through What’s On!, I hope you can see our Mission as I do.

Vik’s Tips for a Healthy New Year...

DO NOT OVERDO IT THE FIRST WEEK!

HAVE FUN DOING WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

This is Rule #1. Ease into your routine, starting off with maybe just 2 or 3 workouts a week. Then add an extra 1 or 2 from there.

GIVE YOUR BODY A BREAK AND REST WHEN NEEDED.

SET A BASELINE.

You will not make long term improvements by jumping into a program 5x a week and stressing your muscles and body out.

Measurements and goal tracking are key to a successful start. The scale may not move for a little while so knowing you’re getting stronger and losing the unwanted inches will keep you motivated.

2018 Year in Review The Economic Development Department plans to hit the ground running this year, building on the momentum gained across their key objectives in 2018. With the expansion of the tourism mandate, along with project initiatives including the Stave West Recreation Area and the Mission Waterfront Revitalization Strategy, 2019 is expected to be as busy and diverse as the last.

The tourism portfolio has seen many of the tactics outlined in the two year business plan reach completion. Highlights have included:

• In partnership with the Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association, the development of a mountain bike skills park at Mill Pond is underway and scheduled for completion early in 2019.

Downtown Mission was out of action IRU WKH ¿OP LQGXVWU\ IRU PDQ\ PRQWKV ZLWK WKH VWUHHWVFDSH DQG EHDXWL¿FDWLRQ improvements taking place, however, D VWHDG\ VWUHDP RI ¿OP HQTXLULHV DQG productions continued: ‡ SURGXFWLRQV DQG ¿OP GD\V FRPSOHWHG E\ WKH HQG RI WKH WKLUG TXDUWHU of 2018.

• Meeting over 40 stakeholder’s to-date to discuss the tourism development plan and garner business and partnership support.

‡ 7KH GLUHFW HFRQRPLF EHQH¿W RI DSSUR[LPDWHO\ LQ ¿OP expenditures in the community.

• Over 30 businesses have now completed their “Google My Businessâ€? listing, including the all-important 360° interior images of each business.

• Productions included Great American Railroad Journeys, Signed, Sealed, and Delivered, The Victoria Gotti Story and the Art of Racing in the Rain.

• The creation of two new promotional videos: one in partnership with Maple Ridge to promote the Woodlot Mountain Bike Trail and one with the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival. • 200+ campsites are now open within the Stave West Recreation Area.

While it will continue to have an industrial function; increasingly it is being viewed in terms of the opportunities it presents for high-density residential and mixeduse, light industrial and institutional development. The purpose of current efforts is to identify the best approach to create an achievable plan to coordinate waterfront revitalization efforts.

Revitalization of the waterfront has been D VLJQLÂżFDQW WRSLF RI GLVFXVVLRQ VLQFH 1992. In addition to its historical, cultural and recreational importance, the Fraser River has been central to the development of Mission given its industrial legacy and adjacency to the river for industrial purposes.

Check out this page in future editions to get updates on some of the goals for 2019, including the handover of Visitor Services in May, a new tourism brand and website and the creation of a tourism committee to provide advice and strategic direction to Council. Additionally, watch for important community updates on waterfront revitalization efforts, as well as efforts to develop more local employment opportunities.

Balancing the Emotional and Practical Sides of Buying a Home Imagine this scenario... You're shopping for a new home. You drive to visit a recent listing. As you walk through the front doors, you're impressed. Every room looks fantastic. You see yourself relaxing on the spacious patio, cooking in the modern kitchen, and enjoying evenings with the family in the cozy living room. Your emotions are on overdrive. This is your dream home! Should you make an offer? Probably. In fact, you should make that decision quickly in case there are other interested buyers. However, your decision shouldn't be guided purely by emotion. You want to make sure you take practical matters into consideration too. For example, you'll want to consider: • Is the property within your price range? • Does it have everything you need? • Do you like the neighbourhood? • How old is the property? Are there items, such as the furnace, that may need to be replaced soon? • Will it need any major repairs or upgrades? • What are the average monthly costs of carrying the home? (Property taxes, utilities, etc.) Once you've considered the purchase of the home from a practical VWDQGSRLQW \RX OO KDYH D ORW PRUH FRQÀGHQFH LQ \RXU GHFLVLRQ ZKHQ you make an offer. Need help? Just ask Andre ... Looking for highlight colour that suits you? Try looking closely at your iris, specifically at the light flecks of different colours. Is there silver, caramel or auburn? Changes are you will find a nice tone. Hair colour inspirations: Dark wood tones, deep mahogany or eggplant, auburn or chocolate browns with violet or coppers and reds can be rich for winter. Jolly Rancher candy tones against an almost black sounds yummy. Care for brittle winter hair: Rosemary essential oil and coconut or olive oil treatments protect mois-ture in hair and revitalize the scalp. Add 4 to 6 drops of rosemary es-sential oil to 1 tbsp coconut or olive oil. Apply warm to dry hair and bag for 20 min. Rinse and shampoo, twice for fine hair.

Thoughts on LOVE

Mission Skating Club Hosts Jingle Blades Figure Skating Competition

Written by Quinn Reilander, Age 9-1/2

ove is interesting Some fall in love. I guess that’s why they say love hurts. I think love is a feeling you get when you eat something really good. ( I love pizza! ) On Valentine’s Day some people buy chocolate, flowers and stuffed animals for the ones they love. Love hurts when someone you loves dies. But love lives in you heart forever. The best way to show your love is to do nice things everyday. Give your family a hug and tell them you love them. Mission Youth in Sports & Arts Scholarships for Mission Roadrunners Congratulations to Matthew Abbott and Josh Bramley, both seniors at Mission Senior Secondary’s Lacrosse Academy, for receiving athletic and academic scholarships. Under Director Tania Symons and Head Coach Tej Grewal, Matthew Abbott has signed on to play lacrosse for Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina and Josh Bramley has signed on with Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, Tennessee.

Tournament of the Fallen Stars Champions Each year, the Mission Minor Hockey Association hosts the “Tournament of the Fallen Stars” which honours our Veterans on November 11th, and also remembers the players from Mission Minor hockey whose lives were cut short in a variety of tragedies, whose legacy in our community through Hockey burns strong. At this tournament, the Mission Atom A1 Stars went a perfect 3-0 in round robin play, and every step of the way, they were acknowledged by their opponents for their professionalism and the respect they showed for referees, coaches, and players. In the playoff round, the Stars defeated North Shore Winter Club 5-3, setting up a gold medal game against the Squamish Eagles. At the gold medal game, there was a ceremonial faceoff in which Mike Lago dropped the puck in memory of his son Scotty Lago. Scotty lost his life four years ago in a tragic car accident

leaving behind his girlfriend and two young children and will be forever remembered as a dedicated teammate with a smile on his face, and humour in his heart. The puck was dropped and the Stars jumped to a 4-0 lead and controlled the game despite valiant efforts by the Squamish Eagles to make a comeback. The Mission Atom A1 Stars went on to win the game with a score of 6-3, and it was the first tournament win for many of the Stars’, some of whom are five or six years into their Hockey adventures. Congratulations Stars!

GRAPEVINE FOOD SHARING – NEIGHBOURLINESS POWERED BY TECHNOLOGY

Everyday in our community, many people go hungry. Many of those people are seniors, disabled people and people who might be able to work if they had an adequate and healthy diet. At the same time, many businesses and neighbours end up throwing away tons of useable food, costing them money and burdening our landfills unnecessarily. Even when donors want to give food directly to food banks and helping agencies, it can be a challenge to arrange deliveries, find storage and arrange distribution. We have the food. We have the helpers. We need a way to connect these resources with people in need. The answer is right there in our pockets. A new app and website called Grapevine Food Sharing is giving our smart phones and computers a valuable role in connecting and share with our neighbours. Grapevine Food Sharing is a free online hub (an app and a website) that works like social media to connect individual neighbours and small businesses that want to donate excess food to those who want and need it. The app also helps connect bulk donors (like food companies) with larger helping agencies (like Food Banks). Grapevine even allows people to easily donate or receive non-food resources. Grapevine is designed to help share: - Food of all kinds, in large and small amounts; - Hot meals; social events and fundraisers; - Non-food groceries such as baby supplies, storage containers, cleaning and hygiene items; - Cash donations; - Food vouchers and coupons; - Volunteer time, - Gleaning of fruit or vegetables from local gardens and farms; - Community garden spaces; - Recipes and food-related training. There are many ways to use the app. Users can ask for personalized notifications based on their interests and can even ask for SMS text messages if they don’t have a data plan. Of course, they can simply check the app in the exact same way as they’d use Facebook or Instagram in order to keep current with local listings. Try it for FREE today at grapevinefoodsharing.com! Ed's Christmas Dinner at Bethel Church

Growing up, Ed Williams remembers Christmas dinners surrounded by both strangers and neighbours alike. His mother would open her doors every Christmas and feed anyone who happened to stop by, whether they needed a warm meal, a jacket, or a friendly hug for the holidays. Due to illness, his mother was unable to continue this tradition. So, Ed and his wife Cathy have continued to open their doors and hearts every Christmas. Every year, out of their three-bedroom home, they used feed up to 100 people, never asking for anything in return. Because of Ed's health issues, Pastor Ken opened up Bethel Church and volunteered his congregation to help Ed carry on this tradition for the past 2 years.

BARRY HENDERSON

What's On! in the Community

(Left f ) Barry with doubles partner Marko Golic. (Centre) All the Finalists at The Birmingham National Wheelchair Championships. (Right) Barry in action at a Vancouver Tournament.

This past summer, I happened to be watching a Mission Tennis Club practice session when I first met Barry Henderson. While watching everyone rallying against each other, Barry rolled in in his wheelchair. With only one leg, I thought to myself that it was nice of him to come and cheer someone on. But before I knew it, he was flying around in his wheelchair playing tennis with the rest of them!

He was active in tennis before he lost his leg but it was only three years ago that he was introduced to wheelchair tennis through a Have a Go event put on by BC Wheelchair Sports. He immediately fell in love with the sport. The only difference between able-bodied tennis and wheelchair tennis is that the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces. This is the real beauty of the sport as it means that disabled athletes are able to play against able-bodied athletes.

Despite losing his leg, his story has taught me about the power of challenging and committing yourself to your goals and dreams.

This past summer, he joined the Mission Tennis Club and this past July, he made a commitment to himself that that he would try and compete at the highest level, competing at International Tennis Federation Events. He won the second draw at the Vancouver ITF Event in July

Barry lost his leg in 1991 in an industrial accident. After spending a year rehabilitating, he began his teaching career and is now in his 25th year in the classroom. He currently teaches grade 7 at Albion Elementary school in Maple Ridge.

Following a summer of training with his personal trainer Vik Gill (The

Fitness Lab), he left for Chicago in early October to compete in the Chicago Wheelchair Classic ITF Futures Event. An opening round loss put him onto the consolation side of the draw where he strung together two victories. He defeated both the 191st ranked and the 242nd ranked players in the world to win the consolation event. On November 8th, he travelled to Mazatlan to participate in the Mazatlan Open where he won his first round match before falling in straight sets to the 163th world ranked player. On November 21st, he travelled to Calgary to play in his first Nationals event. He went into the Birmingham National Wheelchair Championships ranked 6th in Canada and 292nd in the world. Mission cheered him on as he ended up finishing fourth in singles and winning a silver medal in doubles.

If you’ve ever walked through the front entrance of Mission Memorial Hospital, you may have seen Alyce Campbell with a smile on her face and ready to help or answer any questions. So, one day I asked Alyce, “What do you do at the hospital?” Alyce has volunteered with the Mission Health Care Auxiliary for the past 10 years with responsibilities ranging from Television Rentals Convenor to President of the Executive to Publicity. The Auxiliary runs the Gift Shop in the hospital and the Cottage Thrift Store on First Ave. Funds raised have helped pay for needed items at the hospital, such an ultrasound machine, treatment recliners, a Vital Sign Machine and much more. Volunteers from the Photo Credit: Alyce Campbell Auxiliary also help out in the Ambulatory Day Care Dept, Equipment Loans and TVs. The Auxiliary also helps fund TRIM (The Residents in Mission) programs and needs, as well as volunteers to help residents on their bus outings and activities. Alyce loves what she is doing and says they're always looking for more volunteers, especially ones with cashiering experience for the Hospital Gift Shop. If you have 2 - 4 hours you can spare and are interested in helping out, go to http://missionhealthcareauxiliary.wordpress.com for more information and application forms. If you end up on a shift with Alyce, I can guarantee you will have a lovely time!
