Severna Park High School Lacrosse, Football

By Tom Worgo

Senior Kevin Bredeck has had quite a following the past few years when it comes to Severna Park High School boys lacrosse home games. His parents, cousins, uncle, brothers, grandparents, and a few friends would come to watch him play. The outcome usually was a good one since the Falcons have won six consecutive state championships.

The fun won’t end for Bredeck’s followers despite him recently graduating from Severna Park. Family and others can watch Bredeck play at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where he will attend the school on an athletic scholarship.

“I think it will be fantastic,” Bredeck says of family coming to watch him play for the Retrievers. “Playing so close to home at UMBC, it will be convenient for my supporters. If I was going to school out of state, it would have been hard for anyone to come see me play.”

He almost did leave the state. That was almost a reality. Bredeck, a midfielder, originally committed to the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, but later changed to UMBC. Bredeck also received offers from Mercer and Mount St. Mary’s universities. West Point and Towson State University also recruited him.

“I really like the coaching staff at UMBC, especially head coach (Ryan) Moran,” explains Bredeck, who carried a 3.86-grade point average at Severna Park. “My dad and I had a call with him, and he re- ally checked all the boxes. He knows what a student-athlete needs playing a Division I sport.”

Bredeck will be reunited with former Severna Park teammate Rory Sullivan, who will be a rising junior. “I think it will be awesome that we are on the same team,” Bredeck says. “He was a fantastic teammate and leader. Going from high school to UMBC, I think he will make that transition easier for me.”

Moran is excited the 18-year-old Bredeck will be part of his program. Moran says he’s had good experiences with Severna Park players in his eight years on the job.

“He is the kind of kid who has unreal speed,” Moran says. “We are looking for midfielders who can play offense and defense and have his skill set. He is the type of player you want in your program with his work ethic.”

Playing club lacrosse for eight years helped Bredeck develop into an elite player. He spent five years playing for the Gambrills-based Athletic Performance Inc. before joining Prostart Lacrosse in Annapolis.

“His athletic ability was a main factor for us winning games,” Prostart Lacrosse Coach Will Dalton says. “We gave him the nickname, ‘Jets.’ And his ability to bring the ball to the defensive side of the field to the offensive side of the field in transition…he was one of the top players I’ve had that can do that.”

Bredeck helped make Severna Park click this season as the Falcons went 12-3. He scored hat tricks against Severn and Mount Hebron. Overall, he totaled 16 goals and five assists to be named an Anne Arundel County Coaches FirstTeam All-County pick. As a junior, Bredeck scored 15 goals and dished out 20 assists to be picked Second-Team All-County selection.

“He is the hardest worker on and off the field,” Severna Park Boys Lacrosse Coach Dave Earl says. “He will play offense and defense. He is a ground ball machine and the fastest player in the county.”

Bredeck also loves playing football. He started for two years at both wide receiver and cornerback. He led Severn Park in all-purpose yards in 2022 with 1,045 and touchdowns (7) to earn Honorable Mention All-County honors. On defense, he recorded 36 tackles and had an interception.

“His athleticism is second to none,” Earl says. “He would have been a heck of a wrestler and a great sprinter in track.”
