Question of the Week: WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICIALS BRING TO THE TABLE? Photos by Jorge Salgado
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: ARMANDO ALVAREZ

ANDREA RAMIREZ:
017 05/06/2
Well it really just depends on what district you’re in, who your city council member is. Of course, our mayor represents everybody. But I think change is good. So a new face, new thoughts, new innovation. I think we really can’t go wrong.
EMILY ROSALES BACA:
I hope the newly elected officials will continue to bring growth to El Paso. To attract more talent, keep some of our kids here [and let people know] there’s entertainment here – exciting things to do when you’re done with your work week. Then they’re more likely to come live here, work here and bring their talents here.
ROBERT FEMATH:
It would be good for the city to move forward, have us grow economically – like this new arena we’re having. Probably get some more sports teams. Things like that.
RUBEN AHEDO:
Leadership and vision for El Paso, and then to maintain the road to prosperity in the areas of economic development. Workforce development – that’s a huge area. Making El Paso appealing for people that go away. Not only for people, but for other companies to come to El Paso and establish themselves here.

Sponsored by Trade Craft, this month’s coloring corner on page 4 was illustrated by Armando Alvarez. Co-founder and creative director of award-winning design and branding agency Viva + Impulse, Alvarez got his artistic start as a child, working with acrylics, pen and ink. By eighth grade, he began to dabble with graphic design. “The Headstand on Dyer would hire me to design metal show flyers for bands such as Slayer and Cannibal Corpse,” Alvarez said. “In return, I would get a cassette or two, maybe a pair of tickets to shows. It was a great deal back then. “I didn’t have a computer so everything was hand-drawn. If I made a mistake, I’d start over.” Today, Alvarez is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. “A handful of El Paso-based creatives, including myself, worked very hard for over a year to start a chapter in El Paso,” Alvarez said. “It was a challenging uphill road, but we made it hap-
pen. The El Paso creative community needs AIGA and vise versa. I’m a firm believer that creatives can make a huge impact on the way a city is molded through good design.” Outside of design, Alvarez enjoys playing soccer. He used to play for the semi-pro soccer club El Paso Patriots. His four daughters keep him busy, most recently with urban farming. “Our daughters wanted chickens, so I built them a chicken coop,” Alvarez said. (See chicken coop above.) “They wanted a vegetable garden, so I built garden boxes for them. It’s a win-win situation. I get to work with my hands and they get to enjoy picking tomatoes and checking for eggs.” Aside from advising aspiring graphic designers and marketers to go for a college degree, Alvarez has some other simple pointers: “Don’t limit yourself to design trends or favorites. As a commercial designer, it’s not about what you like – at least not completely. It’s about reaching a specific audience, which varies significantly, through well thought-out strategies, design and messaging. And more importantly, never stop learning. Ever.”

AT THE DRIVE-IN RETURNS TO ROOTS WITH NEW ALBUM By John Del Rosario comment: @whatsupweekly
Commitment is hard. Be it commitment to relationships, to a college major or to being in a band, it requires a willingness to work, sacrifice and grow. For members of At the Drive-In, the last five years have seen the band make multiple attempts to commit to each other – some more willing than others. This Friday, May 5, will reveal the next big step in their commitment with the release of “in•ter a•li•a,” the band’s first album since 2000’s “Relationship of Command.” The milestone comes one day before the group returns to their hometown for a tour kick-off at the El Paso County Coliseum. Founding member Jim Ward’s departure from the band was announced days before their reunion tour in 2016 with a Facebook post that read, “As our ship prepares for voyage, we announce that Jim Ward will not be joining us on future journeys.” Ward focused on his El Paso endeavors while the rest of the At the Drive-In members focused on collaborating again. “The biggest challenge is to not fall into old dynamics or patterns,” lead guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez said. “We have such strong personalities. “Cedric and I have been best friends since we were, like, 13 or something and we’re of the same mind. It’s like there’s me

and Cedric, and there’s everybody else. But now it’s like, ‘Let’s make sure we communicate the same way with everybody else. Let’s make sure that we communicate with each other what we’re feeling and what we want to get done – what hurts our feelings and lifts our spirits.’” “in•ter a•li•a” is an album where the only thing that sounds 17-years-in-the-making is
the maturity of its members into better musicians and better people. It marks not only a return to familiar form for the band, but one that surprisingly maintains the kind of strength, passion and focus of the band’s prior work despite the huge gap between albums. With clearer channels of communication between members, the new album
made way for the band to heal. “What really stands out to me with this album is this wonderful thing of this healing process that we were able to experience,” Rodriguez-Lopez said. “In past records, there were a lot of open wounds. A lot of time passed and in that time, life happened. We became adults. People had families. Continued on 7

“Because we had a distinct will not to fall into old patterns, all this amazing stuff happened between us. One thing is we weren’t very good at communicating when we were kids, so now as adults, we were communicating and getting a lot of things off our chests.” Rodriguez-Lopez attributes his newfound openness, in part, to working with his plethora of other projects like Bosnian Rainbows and Antemasque. “It’s made me a better listener,” he said. “It made me more of a patient person.” The highly prolific musician made the commitment to only work with bands and not release any solo work shortly after his mother died in 2012. He sought balance in his life after being a solo artist constantly working on material. With his knowledge of recording and composition, he’s able to effortlessly knock out demos for future solo tracks – often getting too caught up in the process. “In one sense, that’s very beneficial to an expressive person because there’s nothing between the creative spirit and what you’re trying to express,” he said. “On the other hand, too much of that is not good. Everything in moderation, including moderation.” As it turns out, the decision to play with bands was an unconscious commitment to growth. “You have to be willing to be malleable, to put your mind completely in there and let neu-
roplasticity do its thing and really just become a part of what that particular band’s personality is,” he said. “And that’s a huge tool to have, in terms of being able to write and record with a band that hasn’t made a record in 16 years. “That might seem like a daunting task to someone at first, but if you have the experience of adjusting yourself to what the situation is, it’s like, ‘It’s just a new situation and set of parameters now. Let’s dive in.’” With that mindset in place, he and the rest of At the Drive-In didn’t just set out to make a record; they also stayed true to the band’s sound, energy and legacy. “When we were starting the narrative of how we would approach it, we were looking to honor the personality of At the Drive-In,” Rodriguez-Lopez said. “It’s a way bigger thing, greater than the sum of its parts. It’s bigger than the 14-15 different members we had. It’s an actual thing that’s giving energy to fans.” Self-proclaimed super fan Josie Jimarez-Howard said the cuts off the new album stay true to what At the Drive-In has been, not skipping a beat from their last album. “They proved how kind of ahead of their time they are, being how the new songs sound fresh and not of this outdated kind of sound, banking on nostalgia to fly,” she said. “Cedric sounds as fiery as ever and the interplay between the guitarists is still beautifully cacophonous and piercing. “It’s a set of songs so focused that every member had to have definitely aligned spiritually to have every piece fall into place like it does so perfectly.”

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY FINDS TO LOOK OUT FOR By Andrea Sandoval comment: @whatsupweekly
It’s one of the best days of the year for every comic book fan. Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual event that comes every first Saturday in May. This Saturday May 6, participating comic book stores will give out 50 FCBD titles. (Disclaimer: Just because you can get certain comics for free, doesn’t mean you get other comics that are non-FCBD titles for free! Don’t quibble with your comic book vendor over this!) Some FBCD titles to keep an eye out for are:
‘Rick and Morty’ (Mature Readers)
Based off Dan Harmon & Justin Roiland’s animated show from Adult Swim, this special FCBD issue will feature the story that appeared in the very first issue of the Rick and Morty comics. It will also feature an exclusive first look at an upcoming miniseries titled “Pocket Like You Stole It!”
‘Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir’ (All Ages)
Based off Zagtoon & Method Animation’s series, this FCBD issue will feature an all-new original story featuring protagonists Ladybug and Cat Noir. This will also be the start of the all-new monthly series of “Miraculous” by Action Lab.
‘I Hate Image’ (Mature Readers)
Featuring Skottie Young’s protagonist from “I Hate Fairyland,” Gertrude finds out about a secret passage that can help her finally escape Fairyland. During her journey, she crosses into IMAGE, home to Image Comics favorites including characters from “Saga” and “The Walking Dead.” Will Gertrude ever return home? Some comic book stores will have activi-
ties such as costume contests and raffles. Hit up your local comic book stores to see what kind of events they’ll have. For more information on Free Comic Book Day, visit FreeComicBookDay. com WHAT’S UP

GET A KICK OUT OF THESE KICKS El Paso’s Bel Air High School recently advanced to semi-finals of the Vans Custom Culture shoe art competition. Going on now until May 10, the top 50 schools’ submissions will be displayed on the Custom Culture website, customculture.vans.com, where people can vote for their favorite set of designs. More than 3,000 schools from across the nation submitted customized Vans shoes in four categories: action sports, arts, music and local flavor. From there, the shoes were sent to Vans’ headquarters, where employees and a judging panel chose the Top 50 schools. To maintain a reflection of the border culture, Bel Air students depicted bullfighting for the sports category and a mariachi singer for music. “All of our paintings were created in the theme of loteria,” said Ramiro Or-
donez, who teaches art at Bel Air. “We have participated the last four years, having reached the top 50 three of those four years. Each year, our students get closer and closer to having their artwork as the next great thing for Vans shoes.” After the voting phase, the top five finalists will get an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles, where their shoes will be displayed to a panel of celebrity judges. The winner will receive $50,000 and the four runner-up schools will receive $4,000, all going towards funding their school art programs. “Bel Air High School has some of the most incredibly talented art students in the universe,” Ordonez said. “They have a unique sense of identity and belong to one of the oldest communities in El Paso. They are always willing to be a part of something bigger than themselves.”

With new special effects, staging and choreography, the touring show is under the production of Cameron Mackintosh, whose work includes several award winners such as “Cats,” “Miss Saigon” and both the stage and film adaptation of “Les Misérables.” “When we advertise ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ as spectacular, we really do mean it, because it’s giant,” said Travis Taylor, the understudy for the phantom. “We have over 20 semi trucks of traveling material in costumes and sets and lights and everything that travels with the show. There’s so much to please the eye that you can literally see it a dozen times and still see something new every time you go.” A story of unrequited love, “The Phantom of the Opera” follows the love triangle between promising young soprano Christine Daaé, childhood sweetheart Vicomte Raoul de Chagny and the phantom, a tormented musical genius who haunts the Paris opera house. “So many people resonate with the phantom,” Taylor said. “He’s a character that’s been bullied. You feel empathy for him. You feel for his situation, this man who’s been deformed and is trying desperately to seek and find beauty. Who can’t relate to that – whether it’s a physical deformity or emotional deformity?” Whether it’s your first time experiencing the Tony Award-winning musical or a new perspective to witness a falling chandelier, “The Phantom of the Opera” will certainly offer a night to remember. “There’s something in the play for every single person,” Taylor said. “And the love story is so magnetic because people understand what that is to be obsessed with something and someone and to fall in love.” Be sure to follow What’s Up on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as we go back stage and meet the cast.

CYNTHIA LEE FONTAINE MAKES CINCO DE MAYO A ‘DRAG’

irst she won the title of Miss Congeniality on season eight of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race,” then she made a surprise return on season nine, and now Cynthia Lee Fontaine and her “crazy cucu” are coming to El Paso to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Touch Bar and Nightclub. The Puerto Rican queen, who has been open about her battle with stage 1 liver cancer, shared with What’s Up how she keeps her upbeat attitude, what it’s like working with the world’s most famous drag queen and what her future goals are.
Q:
Catch us up on what you’ve been up to these last few months. I have been traveling and touring for my live show, Cucu Confessions. It’s been amazing to see the fans come out.
Q:
Your social media is so positive and a place for you to voice your opinions on issues that matter to you. Where does that stem from? My positivity comes from my family. Specifically, my grandmother, who is a very spiritual person and involved in the community. It is their strength and positive thinking that has inspired me my entire life. I get it all from them.
Q:
What lessons did you learn from Mama RuPaul? I learned to fight for your dreams. To break stereotypes and to just be yourself. Ru has taught me to not be afraid to show the world who you are.
Q:
What do you still hope to accomplish? I’ve always just wanted to be an entertainer. I’ve accomplished TV, so I want to do movies next, and of course more music.
Q:
Austin (where you currently reside) is not too far from El Paso; is there anything you’re most excited about doing or seeing here? I love El Paso! I’ve been before and can’t believe the support of the fans. I am most looking forward to getting on that stage and performing for mis amores!
Q:
What can fans expect from your upcoming appearance here? A lot of energy, dancing and craziness on the microphone. They’re going to get my crazy cucu and all the Cynthia Lee Fontaine they can handle.

VEGETARIAN SOCIETY BRINGS AUTHOR JL FIELDS TO DINNER By Denise Nelson-Prieto comment: @whatsupweekly enowned vegan lifestyle coach, educator, cook and author JL Fields will be the featured guest at the Vegetarian Society of El Paso’s spring dinner this Saturday, May 6. Her list of accomplishments include creating and directing the Colorado Springs Vegan Cooking Academy and a vegan cooking curriculum for the Culinary Arts program at the University of New Mexico in Taos. For Fields, her mission is not so much to preach to the vegan choir, but to open doors for people who are interested in incorporating more plant-based foods into their diets. “Most of the people who sign up for my classes are not vegan,” she said. “But I don’t care what you call yourself when you walk out; if I have empowered you to eat more healthfully, get more creative in the kitchen and start to have meals that at some point have no animal products, then my objective has been met.” Fields has been vegan for the last seven years. She admits when she made the switch to a no-animal diet, she didn’t really know how to create vegan meals. She taught herself to cook and began writing a blog. This in turn led to an opportunity to co-author

the book “Vegan For Her.” “I started teaching classes, writing cookbooks and found out this was something I’m really good at,” Fields said. “People learn in different ways and I get up in front of people and teach them how to make something that’s delicious, healthy and on the table in no time after they’ve been working all day.” At the Vegetarian Society dinner, Fields plans to give a talk called “five ways to be vegan in the real world.” Bullet points will include ordering vegan at non-vegan restaurants and how to become an ingredient sleuth. She will also have copies of her latest book “Vegan Air Fryer” as well as her 2015 release, “Vegan Pressure Cooking” available. KAPPY’S CORNER By Steve Kaplowitz comment: @whatsupweekly
The Green Bay Packers entered the 2017 NFL Draft with an obvious need at running back. Eddie Lacy left in free agency and joined the Seattle Seahawks. The team’s leading rusher was Ty Montgomery, who began 2016 as a wide receiver. To address their needs, the Packers drafted three players – including UTEP’s Aaron Jones late in the fifth round. The Miners all-time leading rusher joins a crowded young running back core, including Montgomery, fourth round pick Jamaal Williams from BYU and seventh round pick Devante Mays from Utah State. Every UTEP fan who watched Jones carve up the record books knows what he is capable of. In Green Bay, he will be considered more of a dual threat back compared to the classic big, bruising rusher like Williams. Jones will be in a good position to make the team since the Packers do not have a franchise player at running back. Some media outlets already consider Jones a steal for the Packers in the fifth round. There will be some people questioning
Jones’ decision to leave UTEP after his junior season. It is impossible to predict the future and determine if he would have been a higher draft choice if he had opted to stay with the Miners. The team has a brutal 2017 schedule, including non-conference road games at Oklahoma, Army and a home game against Arizona. Had Jones been injured at any point this upcoming season, his draft stock could have been severely damaged. There was also little more for him to accomplish at UTEP as a senior. I believe the decision for Jones to turn pro was a wise one and Packers fans will enjoy Aaron Jones as much as El Paso has over the past eight years at Burges High and UTEP. Jones was the first UTEP football player to be drafted since 2008 when a trio of Miners were selected. He is also the 11th Miner chosen by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Draft since they took Ed Smith with the first pick of the second round in 1948. Ken Heineman was the first Miner player ever to be drafted when the NFL’s Cleveland Rams selected him in the sixth round in 1940. At that time, the school was known as Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (TCM). Although the Miners had 13 players drafted by the NFL in the 1940s and 1950s, no decade saw more success for the program than the 1960s. A total of 22 players were drafted by teams in either the NFL or AFL, including 17 between 1967 and 1969. Linebacker Fred Carr holds the dis-

tinction of the highest draft pick, when the Green Bay Packers took him fifth overall in 1968. He went on to play 10 seasons with the Packers and was a three-time Pro Bowl selection. That same year, teammate George Daney was selected with the 22nd pick in the first round of the NFL/AFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Seven other Miners will be heading to NFL training camps. The Seattle Seahawks signed linebacker Nick Usher and tight end Hayden Plinke, fullback Darren Laufasa agreed to a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals and wide receiver Cole Freytag will get a tryout with the Tampa Bay Bucs. In addition, offensive tackle Je-
rome Daniels was invited to a mini-camp tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers, while tight end Kent Taylor and kicker Jay Mattox both received mini-camp tryouts with the San Francisco 49ers. Good luck to all of them. Since 1997, Steve Kaplowitz has hosted “Sportstalk” weekday afternoons 4-7 p.m. on 600 ESPN El Paso.
