HOW DO WE

FROM THE EDITOR

GET OUR

VICTORIA G. MOLINAR comment: @whatsupweekly

DON’T FORGET! Our free adult coloring book night is this Thursday, June 29 at DeadBeach Brewery on 406 S Durango St. The fun starts at 5 p.m., and we’ll be celebrating the work of artist Marcos Rey, who illustrated this month’s Coloring Corner. We’re excited about our new partnership with DeadBeach and to be a part

WINNERS?

W

hoa – I can’t believe we’re already in our second Best of the Best round! If you’re wondering why we decided to split our annual BOTB awards into four parts – the answer is simple. Highlighting the winners, which includes over 100 categories, in four sections makes BOTB more digestible for readers. After all, I assign my freelancers to do write-ups on each and every one of the winners, which takes time and naturally costs money. We aim to make them fun and hope readers enjoy them. Highlighting the winners 25-40 at a time makes our BOTB issues way more reader-friendly. Reading my writers’ profiles on each winner deepens my pride in this city. El Paso has long been deemed as Hell Paso by those who constantly proclaim that there’s nothing to do here. Despite the numerous publications in this city that highlight all that there is to do, there are still plenty of people who think that way. The only thing that makes this city hellish is its relentless heat, but its worth it when you think of the cost of living, the friendly people and the countless events that happen throughout the year – many of which are free. In fact, I’m constantly thinking that there’s too much to do in this region. Do I enroll in the Thursday pottery class at the El Paso Museum of Art or for the Coding with Brew class at Fab Lab El Paso? Do I go to Pop Goes the Fort for my July 4th celebration or do I drive over to Las Cruces for the Fourth of July picnic at La Viña Winery? (P.S. see our roundup on page 17!) Should I spend my Labor Day weekend at the Sun City Music Festival or should I drive out to Ruidoso, New Mexico for a peaceful getaway? The possibilities are endless and I wanna do it all, damn it! So the next time I hear that there’s nothing to do here, I’m going to roll up a copy of What’s Up and—hand it to that lovely, misinformed person ;D! (That’s right, I used an emoticon, an editor’s most hated faux pas. Dun dun dunnnnnn!) In all seriousness, I hope this issue inspires you to get out of the house, party and play.

1. Nominate Anyone and everyone in the regional area can nominate. Nominations happen online at whatsuppub.com. What’s Up vets nominees to ensure they qualify for the category. Nominations don’t decide winners. They determine the Top 10 finalists in each category, which will advance to the final ballot for the vote. The Top 10 finalists from the previous year are automatically seeded when nominations open.

PRESENTED BY Y

What’s Up’s Best of the Best is a reader’s choice contest to name and celebrate El Paso’s favorite people and places. The categories are grouped into four parts scheduled throughout the year. This week, we are proud to publish Part 2: Party & Play, highlighting some of El Paso’s hottest spots and events that offer an abundance of entertainment. Whether you’re a fashionista, outdoorsy adventurer, cinephile or pub crawler – there’s a little something for everyone. The Best of the Best series is a great community resource for locals and visitors. From planning a short weekend getaway to finding the perfect spot to woo your date, consider this list a local guide for those who are allergic to boredom. Thank you to our readers who took the time to vote and congratulations to the winners. Save the date for Best of the Best Part 3: Around Town. Nominations open July 14. Visit WhatsUpPub.com for more information.

2. Vote The voting ballot is available online. Voters must register to use the system and must provide some information to participate. Only one vote per person and only local participants qualify.

El Paso Fashion Week is the Southwest’s premier haute couture extravaganza, sweeping this year’s Best Annual Event category. This two-year winner combines glitz, glory and glam to create a four-day fashiongasm. The brainchild of brothers Robert and Hector Chavez, EPFW showcases the hottest designs by some of the world’s foremost fashion innovators. “ W e live in a

city where a lot of people believed there was no fashion,” said Robert. “This event takes fashion to a whole new level.” The fashion-forward siblings attended several major fashion week events nationwide, including Miami and New York, before diving headlong into the creation of EPFW seven years ago. Top professional models from around the country grace the runway each year, highlighting the fashion realm’s hottest creations. EPFW seems to one-up itself year after year, and the team works tirelessly to incorporate new energy and innovative themes. “We really do our homework to find fresh faces and new designers and to think of different themes to outdo the previous year,” said Hector. “We work hard and everyone brings something different to the table.” More info: Look for the next El Paso Fashion Week in October, which will culminate at Grace

Hope & Anchor

“They have Lone Star!” Such were the words of Texas ex-patriate and Idaho transplant Robert Mangold when asked why Hope & Anchor was voted El Paso’s best bar. From their extensive beer and liquor selection to their sprawling, lush patio and eclectic design — regulars and newbies alike love the atmosphere, service and selection Hope & Anchor has to offer. “The artwork here is unique and hand-designed, constantly revolving and keeping it fresh,” Hope & Anchor owner

Chris Lewels said. “It’s a place for all ages and all demographics from suits and ties to college kids. You can come in and have a conversation; the music isn’t blaring.” The fun at Hope & Anchor goes well beyond happy hour specials. “We try to be more than a bar; we participate in charity events and things for the community,” Lewels added. “That’s always been our goal.” Open from 3 p.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Wednesday and 12 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursday-Sunday, Hope & Anchor offers a little something for everyone – even Lone Star. Joe, Vinny & Bronson’s Bohemian Café Photo by Jorge Salgado

Best Café Hangout

Joe, Vinny & Bronson’s Bohemian Café

Local hipster haunt Joe, Vinny & Bronson’s Bohemian Café is this year’s top taker for Best Café Hangout. The establishment has volleyed the title back and forth with Hillside Donut Co. for the last several years. But once again, JVB has proven they’ve captured the formula for success. For owner Christina Estrada, there is much more to her joint than great coffee, a delectable selection of craft beer and a menu that offers the ever-so-popular 420 fries (topped with tomato, cilantro, mozzarella, feta and salsa). “There is something unique about what we do,” she said. “It’s a synergy of all the elements we’ve put together to create a very welcoming, non-exclusive space.” When the café first opened its doors several years ago, Estrada set out to establish a place with a little something for everyone, where pretension is checked at the door and the fun, fresh vibes flow like wine – which they also offer, by the way. She is a creative visionary whose hard work and elbow grease have turned JVB into a hip, warm and welcoming place! More info: 824 N. Piedras St., 915-8010475, facebook.com/jvnbcafe Runner-up: Eloise – 255 Shadow Mountain Dr., Suite A, 915-581-2441, EloiseElPaso.com

Best City Trail

McKelligon Canyon

With its breathtaking view of the sun setting on the Franklin Mountains and the McKelligon Canyon Challenge 5K run that continues to garner countless participants every fall, it’s no wonder McKelligon Canyon was voted Best City Trail by What’s Up readers. “It is absolutely my favorite place,” said Martha Fernandez, What’s Up’s circulation director who frequents the trail. “I love the hills. I love the climb. I’ve been doing it for about a year, and I probably do it three times a week.” McKelligon Canyon was named after rancher and realtor Maurice J. McKelligon, who lived in El Paso during the 1880s. As many already know, its amphitheater is the home of the 40-year show “Viva! El Paso,” the Cool Canyon Nights music series and the free Movies in the Canyon series, which is scheduled to begin in August of this year. “McKelligon canyon is used by so many, of all shapes, sizes and ages,” Franklin Mountain Wilderness Coalition secretary Judy Ackerman said. “It is a special place that makes you feel that you are transported back hundreds of years while you are still in the middle of our city.” Ackerman’s trail recommendation? “The top of McKelligon canyon road is the start of the Ron Coleman trail,” she said. “Try it. Bring at least two quarts of water.”

More info: 1331 McKelligon Canyon Drive, 915-566-6441, tpwd.texas.gov/ state-parks/franklin-mountains Runner-up: El Paso Museum of Archaeology and Wilderness Park – 4301 Transmountain Rd., 915-755-4332, archaeology.elpasotexas.gov

Best Day Trip

compress, Ruidoso truly offers something for everyone. “El Paso loves Ruidoso as its favorite getaway for our cool summer temperatures, our outdoor recreation and our unique shopping,” said Gina Kelley, director of tourism for the Village of Ruidoso. What’s on Kelley’s Ruidoso visitor bucket list? 1) Sit on a deck with friends and family and enjoy the mountain ambiance. 2) Shop and dine in mid-town, where there are no chain stores or restaurants. 3) Fish the Rio Ruidoso, Grindstone or Alto Lakes for trout. 4) Catch a show at the Spencer Theater of the Performing Arts. 5) Zipline on the Wind Rider Zip Tour at Ski Apache or the Apache Eagle Zip Rider at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. Montrae Lounge

First established in 1961, The Montrae Lounge has been a cozy corner to sip on cocktails and relax with friends. Its name comes from a combination of McRae Boulevard and Montana Avenue, where the bar is located. In 1991, the place began to find its present identity when it was purchased by Ingrid McKee. She ran the bar and raised its reputation until passing on the business recently to Amy Wood, Marisa Monarez and Jody McKinnon. The trio takes tremendous pride in continuing on the tradition of being the friendliest bar in El Paso. “If you don’t already know someone here, it won’t take long to find someone to talk with,” Wood said. There is plenty of kindness to go with your drink and there is no better place to find smiles on faces and time to unwind. With a low price menu and a great amount of drink specials and their doors opening at 7 a.m. daily, the Montrae Lounge is always

Music Under the Stars

Music Under the Stars is no stranger to earning What’s Up’s Best Event Series award. The popular free event is currently in its 34th season, making it one of El Paso’s longest running concert series. MUTS brings in both local and national acts – including Grammy Award winners like Los Lonely Boys – to the Chamizal National Memorial and Cohen Stadium. One highlight of this year’s series was Latin funkrock band Ozomatli’s performance on June 4. This year, concertgoers can expect a variety of other music genres like pop, coun-

try, salsa and the popular Noche Ranchera with local Mariachi group Los Arrieros. “This is El Paso at its finest,” said Erin Ritter, public affairs coordinator of the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department. “Kids and all ages are welcome. It’s an opportunity to see acts that normally cost $2030 for free.” This coming July 4, El Pasoans can enjoy a changeup for the annual MUTS Independence Day celebration. On Tuesday, expect to see Neon Circus, a Brooks & Dunn tribute band, rather than the El Paso Wind Symphony. As with every July 4 tradition at the Chamizal, the night will culminate with a fireworks spectacular. More info: MUTS continues on Sundays until July 23 at the Chamizal National Memorial, 800 San Marcial. Best Family Outing

El Paso Chihuahuas baseball game

Maybe it’s the food, maybe it’s the music, maybe it’s Chico – or maybe it’s the antics between innings, fireworks, giveaways and the kids zone. Maybe it’s simply the play on the field. Whatever it is, the El Paso Chihuahuas have been voted the Best Family Outing in the Sun City. From their inception, the goal has always been to be the go-to venue for sports fans and their families. “We always put the family first and are always trying to come up with new ways to entertain the kids and make the experience as fun for them as possible,” said Angela Olivas, director of marketing and communications for the Chihuahuas. With a constant barrage of nightly promotions and quirky themes (think “A

League of Their Own” and Lucha Libre nights), the Chihuahuas are the overwhelming choice for families to enjoy a night out. Laugh, dine, shop, cool off under some dancing fountains, maybe leave with a freebie or two and, oh yeah – enjoy a baseball game. More info: ElPasoChihuahuas.com, facebook.com/epchihuahuas, Twitter: @epchihuahuas Runner-up (It’s a tie!): El Paso Zoo – 4001 E. Paisano, 915-212-0966, ElPasoZoo.org; Cattleman’s Steakhouse – 3450 S Fabens Carlsbad Rd, 915-544-3200, CattlemansSteakHouse.com Best Gay Bar

Touch Bar & Nightclub

The newly relocated Touch Bar has swept up the title for Best Gay Bar. This glitzy, glammy tower of scintillation, sass and sin, nestled at 11395 James Watt, is a sumptuous mecca for El Paso’s LGBTQ

community. The club is equipped with classy furnishings, chandeliers, a fabulous stage, clean, spacious bathrooms and perhaps the crowning jewel of club culture – plenty of parking spaces which are not a mile-long trek away! For club co-owner Carlos Diaz De Leon, Touch’s clientele is what makes it tops. “I feel the customers are what make it the best,” he said. “[I love] just seeing how happy they are when they’re there.” Tight-bodied go-go dancers – clad only in shiny boy shorts – provide more eye candy, as they sway and thump to the beats of the club DJ. The club regularly hosts drag shows, as well as burlesque and other entertainment. Designed by famed golf course architect Tom Fazio, the Butterfield Trail Golf Course has racked up many accolades since opening in 2007. The course features 18 unique holes that make use of the area’s natural topography and even takes the unpredictable El Paso wind into account in its design. Other than lazy days or team-building activities playing on the course, the facility is also available for any special occasion. The golf course takes its name from a mail and passenger trail that used to be active from 1858-1861. Out of the 2,800 miles that it ran, more than 700 of those miles ran through Texas, and part of that old traveling trail runs through the golf course today. “It’s a nice golf course, it has a nice design that provides a little bit more challenge than a regular course and it’s well maintained,” said local golfing regular, Jodi Copley. “The pro shop has a good selection and the restaurant is nice. The historical perspective makes it unique to the region.” Butterfield Trail Golf Course will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary and player development month throughout June. Curious beginners can take advantage of free lessons throughout the month starting at 5 p.m. The course will also feature nightly family nights. Course regContinued on 10

You’ve been watching the seconds tick away on your desktop clock. When is this day going to end? You speed-walk to your car. It’s 108ºF outside and you’re wearing heavy office attire, begging for the first chance to rip that tie and blazer off and get into the car and cruise down Mesa home

to –– What? They closed lanes again?!? There’s another %^*$ accident??!! As you sigh, hanging your head into the cushion of your car horn, you see it out of the corner of your eye – an oasis in an asphalt desert. You don’t need to sit, inching towards the light on Executive for 40 minutes. You’ll go wait it out with a beer. Located conveniently between Downtown, UTEP, and the Westside, Hope & Anchor makes the perfect place for a quick cocktail and bite with co-workers and friends. “Our happy hour specials vary,” Hope & Anchor bartender Rodney Harris said. “Like on Thursdays, we have $3 tequilas. Best Karaoke

Tri Star Karaoke at Special Edition

Special Edition Karaoke is bringing the songs you love sung (occasionally) by the people you may know (all too often) with the date you came with. Mastering the ancient Japanese tradition of karaoke is no easy task, but Sam Pascale has been voted El Paso’s greatest practitioner. Todd Carroll, a Canadian expat who recently moved from El Paso to Los Angeles for his acting career, was a regular at Special Edition’s karaoke nights. Whenever he visits El Paso to see friends and family, he makes sure to schedule in a karaoke night at the ever-so-popular joint. Carroll raves about his karaoke man, Sam. “He is super easy going and treats everyone really well – no egos here at all,” Carroll said. While the recent trend in karaoke circles has been to up the ante a bit with cash prizes and competitive incentives such as entry into “The Voice,” Special Edition specializes in keeping it loose – often playing gag videos and working to find laughter in between the songs. As Todd can attest, “It is such a good time there with the regulars.” More info: 3333 N Yarbrough Dr., 915595-0558, facebook.com/SpecialEditionBar

Best Live Music Venue

Don Haskins Center

Home to the UTEP Miners during basketball season, the Don Haskins Center has hosted many of the most popular concerts to come through El Paso, including Juan Gabriel, Shakira, Britney Spears, and most recently, Elton John. With 11,000-plus seating, the auditorium has allowed El Paso audiences to enjoy the entertainment of big-name acts

we might have otherwise not been able to enjoy. One example that comes to mind is Cirque du Soleil’s “Ovo” which gave the Sun City nights of awe-inspiring acrobatic fun. “The Don Haskins Center is a truly versatile building that provides great acoustics, unobstructed sightlines and a very intimate feel by design for each and every production that visits our arena,”

said Julian E. Valdes, marketing manager for UTEP’s Office of Special Events. “Our goal, as a venue in this vibrant market, is to sell our arena and region to agents and promoters around the country. “We highlight the many things that El Paso and the region offers and let them know we are committed to making their event a success, so promoters and artists alike can return time and time again.” More info: 151 Glory Rd., 915-747-5481, UTEPSpecialEvents.com

Hope & Anchor

What makes Hope and Anchor an “Epic Patio Bar,” as it’s deemed on its website? Its epic patio, of course! Hope & Anchor’s centerpiece has always been its lushly-appointed patio, which was built with consideration to the building’s former life as a plant nursery. “I designed and built everything that’s out in the patio. I think it’s a huge element of this place,” Hope & Anchor owner Chris Lewels said. “You can go out under the shade, read a book or hang out with friends and just chill out.” Stretch out your liver with Casa de Yoga at their monthly Detox to Retox Yoga on the patio. Enjoy the shade, breeze and the view of the trees and Fralnkin Mountains with one of Hope and Anchor’s signature cocktails. Reflect with a Paloma Old Fashioned by the koi pond. Franklin Mountains State Park

If you’re looking for affordable fun and have a need to reconnect with nature, then you don’t have to travel too far in El Paso thanks to the Franklin Mountains State Park. “Visitors are attracted to the park because the desert provides a sense of solitude and a particular connection with nature,” said park superintendent Cesar Mendez. The park is over 20,000 square acres – making it the largest urban state park in the country. It contains over 100 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, designated areas for rock climbing, opportunities to look for geo caches (hidden “treasure chests”) and campsites for those that want to rough it in the wild. The park also hosts an annual event, the Chihuahuan Desert Fiesta, which takes place September 30. Mendez said the festival’s purpose is to educate people about the desert and reconnect them with nature. “The event is co-organized by us and the Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition, inviting multiple organizations to come together and have exhibits, activities and presentations about nature and the desert,” Mendez said. Just remember, the park is an active desert ecosystem with plenty of little critters and birds to watch out for. But don’t worry – the park’s website lists mountain lions as elusive animals.

The Eastside location also has a pool table and dart boards. Kids of all ages are welcome to play the video games between noon and 7 p.m. on Sundays and between 3-7 p.m. on all other days. Rubiks also hosts birthday parties and events for all ages. Rubiks plans to host more arcade tournaments in the future. Since the famous theater opened in El Paso, locals have had the chance to meet actors from movies like “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Hook.” A fan of sing-alongs? Alamo’s got that, too, with special screenings that range from musicals to music videos of the ’80s and ’90s – all of which come with prop bags. “Our big Selena event did amazing,” Alamo Drafthouse regional programming director Robert Saucedo said. The weekend extravaganza not only screened “Selena” several times, but included lookalike contests, karaoke and a live concert by tribute band Bidi Bidi Banda. “What’s crazy about that screening is that we made more money for Warner Brothers, which owns “Selena,” that weekend than they made at any point since the movie came out 20 years ago. We want to make it an annual event.” Be sure to join the Alamo Drafthouse Film Club on Facebook, where you can suggest movies and other ideas. Best Sporting Event

El Paso Chihuahuas

The El Paso Chihuahuas are only in their fourth year of existence and according to the experts – the fans – they are the Best Sporting Event in the city. The key to the meteoric popularity of the team isn’t just the product they put out on the field. “It’s the whole package,” said Brad Taylor, Chihuahuas’ vice president and general manager. “The idea has always been to put the best team together that we can, as well as making the games as fun and entertaining as possible for the fans who come out.” When you throw in the fact that the Chihuahuas shocked the minor league world by winning the Pacific Coast League title last year, it’s no wonder the fans keep coming out. And the fans have come out in droves. The Chihuahuas, who consistently rank third in attendance in the 16-team league, should be seeing their 2-millionth fan walk across the turnstiles sometime before the month of June is out. General manager Hector Anguiano said he thinks it happened because the place has 60 high definition televisions, the coldest beer and arguably the best service in town. “All beer is kept at 29 degrees Fahrenheit,” Anguiano said. Twin Peaks has a wide variety of beers to choose from, including beer from downtown El Paso’s Deadbeach Brewery. Open Monday-Wednesday from 11 a.m.-midnight and Thursday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 a.m., Twin Peaks offers

Other local customers on Facebook raved about Twin Peaks entrees like the Billionaire’s Bacon Burger and the BBQ pulled pork nachos. MAXIMONO HEADS TO CLUB HERE I LOVE YOU

By Miguel De Santiago comment: @whatsupweekly

L

ike a lot of good music, U.K. house duo Maximono came into existence through the innocent boredom between friends. After years of producing and performing in the electronic music scene, friends and tour mates Nick Hill and Sebastian Wolters longed to create something unique. “It wasn’t really exciting enough for us; we had already been doing it for a long time,” Hill said via phone from South London. “As a result of touring together a lot in the drum and bass scene, we thought, ‘Why don’t we get together and try something different?’” Hill and Wolters came together under the name Maximono and have become known for their “no rules” mixes that toss in a ton of genres. “We drew upon all our influ-

ences and the stuff that we really loved and we came up with this weird brand of house music,” Hill said. The duo recently released a two track EP called “Non Sense.” Both tracks run past five minutes and are a strange journey filled with minimalist beats with samples and synths that add ethereal textures, but retain simplicity and never feel overwhelming or cluttered. “It’s good to keep things simple sometimes,” Hill said. “I think with that EP, we wrote a bunch of tracks and all of them had quite minimal, quite bouncy, kinda seta-smile-on-your-face beats. That’s where we were on ‘Non Sense.’ It’s good vibe music, really. “We wanted a little contrast, but it’s just happy and fun and that’s exactly how we felt writing them, just having a good time, hanging out, writing beats – that’s life, basically.”

With the recent terror attacks in the U.K., Hill said the best thing people can do is stay positive. “It feels like a really bleak time right now worldwide,” Hill said. “I think that music can be such a positive thing in times like this. It can really bring people together and that will always be the case. “As a musician, as a creative, it’s the only thing I can do to try and make things better in the world.” The duo is currently on a North American tour in support of their

EP and showcasing their one-of-akind sound. “We love being in America,” Hill said. “It’s great fun. We’ve always had a good time out there, especially in Texas. Austin is one of my favorite cities.” Maximono’s show at Club Here I love You on Friday, June 30 will be the duo’s first performance in the Sun City. “Never been there before,” Hill said. “Looking forward to coming there for the first time.”

THE BORDERLAND FRIDAS CELEBRATE KAHLO’S BIRTHDAY By Victoria G. Molinar / comment: @whatsupweekly

T

his Saturday, July 1, El Paso art collective The Borderland Fridas will celebrate the 110th birthday of the widely cherished Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Called “Homenaje a Frida Kahlo,” the event will honor her legacy through live music, dance and a plethora of Frida-inspired art outside the Alamo Drafthouse. Motivated by the late painter’s powerful self-portraits and the symbolism in her work, artists Pamela Enriquez-Courts and Michelle Padilla formed The Borderland Fridas six years ago. “We wanted to focus on a lot of women’s issues and women in the arts,” Padilla said. “People don’t see art like Frida’s anymore.” Saturday’s event will begin at 12 p.m. with a ceremonial blessing by Danza Azteca Omecoatl, a local group that continues ancestral and indigenous traditions through dance and prayer. Art workshops focusing on self-expression will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a canvas session for children ages 5-14. The adult workshop, which runs from 2-3 p.m., will have participants ages 15 and up create mini altars. Students in both sessions will create self-portraits – a nod to Kahlo’s most famous pieces. “If you go back, Frida was the original selfie queen,” Padilla said. “She painted herself and expressed everything she was feeling and things she had gone through. A lot of times, today’s selfies are also about self-expression. You take selfies, and you usually want to capture what you’re feeling.” A camera and printer will be available

for participants to use for their self-portraits. Other supplies, including paint, markers, milagros (religious folk charms) and other trinkets will be provided. Both workshops are limited to the first 40 guests who sign up. Alamo Drafthouse will screen the 2002 movie “Frida,” which stars Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina (as Diego Rivera), at 2:30 p.m. The movie will be introduced by UTEP Chicano studies professor Carlos Ortega and will include a Q&A session afterwards. At 4 p.m., there will be a Frida look-alike contest in which participants can win Alamo Drafthouse prizes. Padilla stressed that the contest is also open to children and men. A variety of artists will exhibit their work, which will be available for purchase throughout the event. Proceeds from a silent auction will benefit the event’s performers. The event will also include a lecture by Garland Courts, the director of education for four Las Cruces museums, and performances by folklorico groups Valle del Sol and Ballet Folklorico of El Paso. Female duo Luna Y Sol will sing songs from the “Frida” soundtrack. And of course, it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake. Downtown El Paso’s Blue Seal Bakery will provide a large cake with Kahlo’s famous 1930s Vogue cover portrait. The bakery will also offer pan dulce. Aside from having fun, Padilla said she hopes the event will have a positive impact on attendees. “We want to keep that light nice and bright and keep artists inspired,” Padilla said. “That’s what The Borderland Fridas is all about.”

KAPPY’S CORNER By Steve Kaplowitz / Comment: @whatsupweekly

Back in the 1980s when UTEP made regular appearances in the NCAA Tournament, one of the highlights to every season was the Sun Bowl Basketball Tournament. Teams like Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Texas would book their flights to El Paso and compete in the prestigious holiday tournament against The Bear. Things began to change in the 1990s with the growth of exempt basketball tournaments, allowing teams to play all over the country without the contests counting against their annual game limit. What made these tournaments even more appealing was the host venues were located in popular tourist destinations like Alaska, Maui and the Bahamas. When the NCAA eliminated the “two in four” rule in 2006, college basketball teams could suddenly play in exempt tournaments every year, as well as host their own. The ripple effect was felt by many of the traditional non-exempt holiday tournaments around the country, including the Sun Bowl Tournament. Power 5 schools no longer felt inclined to travel to El Paso and play the Miners, especially with Don Haskins retired as UTEP’s head coach. The biggest selling point for the Sun Bowl Tourney has always been the hospitality. Each team (including UTEP) receives a host committee that makes the three days very enjoyable for players, coaches and their families. The Sun Bowl host committee has such a strong reputation for hospitality that some coaches have been to El Paso multiple times over the years. Last week, the Sun Bowl Association announced the field for the 2017 WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. The big name is North Carolina Wilmington, which has won the Colonial Conference Tournament each of the last

three years and finished the 2016-17 season with an RPI of 27. Their new head coach, C.B. McGrath played for Roy Williams at Kansas and was on the bench with him at Kansas and North Carolina for the last 18 years, including last year’s National Championship. UNC Wilmington is making their first appearance in El Paso. North Dakota State has been to the NCAA Tournament three of the last eight seasons, including 2014 and 2015. The Bison defeated Oklahoma in the NCAA Tourney in 2014. They finished 2016-17 with a 19-11 overall record and an RPI of 110. They played in the WestStar Bank Sun Bowl Invitational in 2014 and lost to Kent State 53-52 in the first round. That team went on to play in the NCAA Tournament. The third team to join UTEP will be the Howard Bison, a team that only won 10 games last season. They had the nation’s leading scorer, but he was injured and missed all but two games last season.

JUNE 28-JULY 5, 2017

Teams like Howard are the toughest for the Sun Bowl Basketball Committee to attract, since they are coming to El Paso with the prospect of losing two non-conference games. The last time UTEP won the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational was 2014. The Miners finished third and fourth in the holiday tournament over the last two seasons. Some fans do not recognize the names of the mid-majors that play here every season. However, the goal of the Sun Bowl Tournament committee is to attract the best college basketball teams with Top 100 RPIs. If fans want to watch the basketball powerhouses they saw at the Don Haskins Center in the 1980s, they should tune in to all of the exempt holiday tournaments in November and December. Why would Power 5 schools give up two guaranteed home games to come to El Paso and play in a field possibly against UTEP? Especially when they make an easy six figures for those home games. If you are criticizing North Carolina Wilmington, you are not a fan of quality

college basketball. They have been one of the best teams in the country the last three years and will be the favorites to win the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in December. Fans just have to stop thinking about the 1980s and instead, look at this tournament as a quality RPI test for UTEP. The Miners do not have to pay for these two tournament games and they don’t have to return a game with a future road trip. That’s music to the ears of Tim Floyd and his coaching staff. Instead of bashing the field, enjoy what will be two solid days of good college basketball at the Don, with teams you may be picking with your brackets in March. ___ Since 1997, Steve Kaplowitz has hosted “Sportstalk” weekday afternoons 4-7 p.m. on 600 ESPN El Paso. Over the last 17 years, he has also worked for UTEP and NMSU as a play-by-play broadcaster, for UTEP telecasts on Time Warner Cable and for KDBC-TV and KTSM-TV as a sports anchor/reporter. You can contact Steve by emailing him at skaplowitz@krod.com.

Sun Bowl Association recently announced that for the first time, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will play the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. The other teams will be North Dakota State, Howard University and UTEP. Pictured here is UNC Wilmington’s C.J. Bryce (right) as he dribbles up court against College of Charleston’s Grant Riller during the first half of an NCAA college championship basketball game in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.
