hoa – I can’t believe we’re already in our second Best of the Best round! If you’re wondering why we decided to split our annual BOTB awards into four parts – the answer is simple. Highlighting the winners, which includes over 100 categories, in four sections makes BOTB more digestible for readers. After all, I assign my freelancers to do write-ups on each and every one of the winners, which takes time and naturally costs money. We aim to make them fun and hope readers enjoy them. Highlighting the winners 25-40 at a time makes our BOTB issues way more reader-friendly. Reading my writers’ profiles on each winner deepens my pride in this city. El Paso has long been deemed as Hell Paso by those who constantly proclaim that there’s nothing to do here. Despite the numerous publications in this city that highlight all that there is to do, there are still plenty of people who think that way. The only thing that makes this city hellish is its relentless heat, but its worth it when you think of the cost of living, the friendly people and the countless events that happen throughout the year – many of which are free. In fact, I’m constantly thinking that there’s too much to do in this region. Do I enroll in the Thursday pottery class at the El Paso Museum of Art or for the Coding with Brew class at Fab Lab El Paso? Do I go to Pop Goes the Fort for my July 4th celebration or do I drive over to Las Cruces for the Fourth of July picnic at La Viña Winery? (P.S. see our roundup on page 17!) Should I spend my Labor Day weekend at the Sun City Music Festival or should I drive out to Ruidoso, New Mexico for a peaceful getaway? The possibilities are endless and I wanna do it all, damn it! So the next time I hear that there’s nothing to do here, I’m going to roll up a copy of What’s Up and—hand it to that lovely, misinformed person ;D! (That’s right, I used an emoticon, an editor’s most hated faux pas. Dun dun dunnnnnn!) In all seriousness, I hope this issue inspires you to get out of the house, party and play.

El Paso Fashion Week is the Southwest’s premier haute couture extravaganza, sweeping this year’s Best Annual Event category. This two-year winner combines glitz, glory and glam to create a four-day fashiongasm. The brainchild of brothers Robert and Hector Chavez, EPFW showcases the hottest designs by some of the world’s foremost fashion innovators. “ W e live in a
city where a lot of people believed there was no fashion,” said Robert. “This event takes fashion to a whole new level.” The fashion-forward siblings attended several major fashion week events nationwide, including Miami and New York, before diving headlong into the creation of EPFW seven years ago. Top professional models from around the country grace the runway each year, highlighting the fashion realm’s hottest creations. The establishment has volleyed the title back and forth with Hillside Donut Co. for the last several years. But once again, JVB has proven they’ve captured the formula for success. McKelligon Canyon
With its breathtaking view of the sun setting on the Franklin Mountains and the McKelligon Canyon Challenge 5K run that continues to garner countless participants every fall, it’s no wonder McKelligon Canyon was voted Best City Trail by What’s Up readers. “It is absolutely my favorite place,” said Martha Fernandez, What’s Up’s circulation director who frequents the trail. “I love the hills. I love the climb. I’ve been doing it for about a year, and I probably do it three times a week.” McKelligon Canyon was named after rancher and realtor Maurice J. McKelligon, who lived in El Paso during the 1880s. As many already know, its amphitheater is the home of the 40-year show “Viva! El Paso,” the Cool Canyon Nights music series and the free Movies in the Canyon series, which is scheduled to begin in August of this year. “McKelligon canyon is used by so many, of all shapes, sizes and ages,” Franklin Mountain Wilderness Coalition secretary Judy Ackerman said. “It is a special place that makes you feel that you are transported back hundreds of years while you are still in the middle of our city.” Ackerman’s trail recommendation? “The top of McKelligon canyon road is the start of the Ron Coleman trail,” she said. “Try it. Bring at least two quarts of water.”

First established in 1961, The Montrae Lounge has been a cozy corner to sip on cocktails and relax with friends. Music Under the Stars
Music Under the Stars is no stranger to earning What’s Up’s Best Event Series award. The popular free event is currently in its 34th season, making it one of El Paso’s longest running concert series. MUTS brings in both local and national acts – including Grammy Award winners like Los Lonely Boys – to the Chamizal National Memorial and Cohen Stadium. One highlight of this year’s series was Latin funkrock band Ozomatli’s performance on June 4. This year, concertgoers can expect a variety of other music genres like pop, coun-
try, salsa and the popular Noche Ranchera with local Mariachi group Los Arrieros. “This is El Paso at its finest,” said Erin Ritter, public affairs coordinator of the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department. “Kids and all ages are welcome. It’s an opportunity to see acts that normally cost $2030 for free.” This coming July 4, El Pasoans can enjoy a changeup for the annual MUTS Independence Day celebration. On Tuesday, expect to see Neon Circus, a Brooks & Dunn tribute band, rather than the El Paso Wind Symphony. Designed by famed golf course architect Tom Fazio, the Butterfield Trail Golf Course has racked up many accolades since opening in 2007. The course features 18 unique holes that make use of the area’s natural topography and even takes the unpredictable El Paso wind into account in its design. Other than lazy days or team-building activities playing on the course, the facility is also available for any special occasion. The golf course takes its name from a mail and passenger trail that used to be active from 1858-1861. Out of the 2,800 miles that it ran, more than 700 of those miles ran through Texas, and part of that old traveling trail runs through the golf course today. “It’s a nice golf course, it has a nice design that provides a little bit more challenge than a regular course and it’s well maintained,” said local golfing regular, Jodi Copley. “The pro shop has a good selection and the restaurant is nice. The historical perspective makes it unique to the region.” Butterfield Trail Golf Course will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary and player development month throughout June. Franklin Mountains State Park
If you’re looking for affordable fun and have a need to reconnect with nature, then you don’t have to travel too far in El Paso thanks to the Franklin Mountains State Park. “Visitors are attracted to the park because the desert provides a sense of solitude and a particular connection with nature,” said park superintendent Cesar Mendez. The park is over 20,000 square acres – making it the largest urban state park in the country. It contains over 100 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, designated areas for rock climbing, opportunities to look for geo caches (hidden “treasure chests”) and campsites for those that want to rough it in the wild. The park also hosts an annual event, the Chihuahuan Desert Fiesta, which takes place September 30. Mendez said the festival’s purpose is to educate people about the desert and reconnect them with nature. “The event is co-organized by us and the Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition, inviting multiple organizations to come together and have exhibits, activities and presentations about nature and the desert,” Mendez said. Just remember, the park is an active desert ecosystem with plenty of little critters and birds to watch out for. But don’t worry – the park’s website lists mountain lions as elusive animals.

Best Place for Bar Games is a new award category that was added this year. Rubiks Arcade Bar has more than 100 old school pinball and arcade games combined at its Eastside and Westside locations. Pershing Inn has a long and interesting history. The central El Paso bar originally opened its doors in front of a house in 1946. At first, the bar only fit in around 49 people. The El Paso Chihuahuas are only in their fourth year of existence and according to the experts – the fans – they are the Best Sporting Event in the city. There’s a few reasons why Twin Peaks on Sunland Park Drive was voted best sports bar by What’s Up readers. MAXIMONO HEADS TO CLUB HERE I LOVE YOU

L
ike a lot of good music, U.K. house duo Maximono came into existence through the innocent boredom between friends. After years of producing and performing in the electronic music scene, friends and tour mates Nick Hill and Sebastian Wolters longed to create something unique. “It wasn’t really exciting enough for us; we had already been doing it for a long time,” Hill said via phone from South London. “As a result of touring together a lot in the drum and bass scene, we thought, ‘Why don’t we get together and try something different?’” Hill and Wolters came together under the name Maximono and have become known for their “no rules” mixes that toss in a ton of genres. “We drew upon all our influ-
ences and the stuff that we really loved and we came up with this weird brand of house music,” Hill said. The duo recently released a two track EP called “Non Sense.” Both tracks run past five minutes and are a strange journey filled with minimalist beats with samples and synths that add ethereal textures, but retain simplicity and never feel overwhelming or cluttered. “It’s good to keep things simple sometimes,” Hill said. “I think with that EP, we wrote a bunch of tracks and all of them had quite minimal, quite bouncy, kinda seta-smile-on-your-face beats. That’s where we were on ‘Non Sense.’ It’s good vibe music, really. “We wanted a little contrast, but it’s just happy and fun and that’s exactly how we felt writing them, just having a good time, hanging out, writing beats – that’s life, basically.”
With the recent terror attacks in the U.K., Hill said the best thing people can do is stay positive. “It feels like a really bleak time right now worldwide,” Hill said. “I think that music can be such a positive thing in times like this. It can really bring people together and that will always be the case. “As a musician, as a creative, it’s the only thing I can do to try and make things better in the world.” The duo is currently on a North American tour in support of their
EP and showcasing their one-of-akind sound. “We love being in America,” Hill said. “It’s great fun. We’ve always had a good time out there, especially in Texas. Austin is one of my favorite cities.” Maximono’s show at Club Here I love You on Friday, June 30 will be the duo’s first performance in the Sun City. “Never been there before,” Hill said. “Looking forward to coming there for the first time.”

his Saturday, July 1, El Paso art collective The Borderland Fridas will celebrate the 110th birthday of the widely cherished Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Called “Homenaje a Frida Kahlo,” the event will honor her legacy through live music, dance and a plethora of Frida-inspired art outside the Alamo Drafthouse. Motivated by the late painter’s powerful self-portraits and the symbolism in her work, artists Pamela Enriquez-Courts and Michelle Padilla formed The Borderland Fridas six years ago. “We wanted to focus on a lot of women’s issues and women in the arts,” Padilla said. “People don’t see art like Frida’s anymore.” Saturday’s event will begin at 12 p.m. with a ceremonial blessing by Danza Azteca Omecoatl, a local group that continues ancestral and indigenous traditions through dance and prayer. Art workshops focusing on self-expression will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a canvas session for children ages 5-14. The adult workshop, which runs from 2-3 p.m., will have participants ages 15 and up create mini altars. Students in both sessions will create self-portraits – a nod to Kahlo’s most famous pieces. “If you go back, Frida was the original selfie queen,” Padilla said. “She painted herself and expressed everything she was feeling and things she had gone through. A lot of times, today’s selfies are also about self-expression. You take selfies, and you usually want to capture what you’re feeling.” A camera and printer will be available
for participants to use for their self-portraits. Other supplies, including paint, markers, milagros (religious folk charms) and other trinkets will be provided. Both workshops are limited to the first 40 guests who sign up. Alamo Drafthouse will screen the 2002 movie “Frida,” which stars Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina (as Diego Rivera), at 2:30 p.m. The movie will be introduced by UTEP Chicano studies professor Carlos Ortega and will include a Q&A session afterwards. At 4 p.m., there will be a Frida look-alike contest in which participants can win Alamo Drafthouse prizes. Padilla stressed that the contest is also open to children and men. A variety of artists will exhibit their work, which will be available for purchase throughout the event. Proceeds from a silent auction will benefit the event’s performers. The event will also include a lecture by Garland Courts, the director of education for four Las Cruces museums, and performances by folklorico groups Valle del Sol and Ballet Folklorico of El Paso. Female duo Luna Y Sol will sing songs from the “Frida” soundtrack. And of course, it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake. Downtown El Paso’s Blue Seal Bakery will provide a large cake with Kahlo’s famous 1930s Vogue cover portrait. The bakery will also offer pan dulce. Aside from having fun, Padilla said she hopes the event will have a positive impact on attendees. “We want to keep that light nice and bright and keep artists inspired,” Padilla said. “That’s what The Borderland Fridas is all about.”

Back in the 1980s when UTEP made regular appearances in the NCAA Tournament, one of the highlights to every season was the Sun Bowl Basketball Tournament. Teams like Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Texas would book their flights to El Paso and compete in the prestigious holiday tournament against The Bear. Things began to change in the 1990s with the growth of exempt basketball tournaments, allowing teams to play all over the country without the contests counting against their annual game limit. What made these tournaments even more appealing was the host venues were located in popular tourist destinations like Alaska, Maui and the Bahamas. When the NCAA eliminated the “two in four” rule in 2006, college basketball teams could suddenly play in exempt tournaments every year, as well as host their own. The ripple effect was felt by many of the traditional non-exempt holiday tournaments around the country, including the Sun Bowl Tournament. Power 5 schools no longer felt inclined to travel to El Paso and play the Miners, especially with Don Haskins retired as UTEP’s head coach. The biggest selling point for the Sun Bowl Tourney has always been the hospitality. Each team (including UTEP) receives a host committee that makes the three days very enjoyable for players, coaches and their families. The Sun Bowl host committee has such a strong reputation for hospitality that some coaches have been to El Paso multiple times over the years. Last week, the Sun Bowl Association announced the field for the 2017 WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. The big name is North Carolina Wilmington, which has won the Colonial Conference Tournament each of the last
three years and finished the 2016-17 season with an RPI of 27. Their new head coach, C.B. McGrath played for Roy Williams at Kansas and was on the bench with him at Kansas and North Carolina for the last 18 years, including last year’s National Championship. UNC Wilmington is making their first appearance in El Paso. North Dakota State has been to the NCAA Tournament three of the last eight seasons, including 2014 and 2015. The Bison defeated Oklahoma in the NCAA Tourney in 2014. They finished 2016-17 with a 19-11 overall record and an RPI of 110. They played in the WestStar Bank Sun Bowl Invitational in 2014 and lost to Kent State 53-52 in the first round. That team went on to play in the NCAA Tournament. The third team to join UTEP will be the Howard Bison, a team that only won 10 games last season. They had the nation’s leading scorer, but he was injured and missed all but two games last season.

Teams like Howard are the toughest for the Sun Bowl Basketball Committee to attract, since they are coming to El Paso with the prospect of losing two non-conference games. The last time UTEP won the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational was 2014. The Miners finished third and fourth in the holiday tournament over the last two seasons. Some fans do not recognize the names of the mid-majors that play here every season. However, the goal of the Sun Bowl Tournament committee is to attract the best college basketball teams with Top 100 RPIs. If fans want to watch the basketball powerhouses they saw at the Don Haskins Center in the 1980s, they should tune in to all of the exempt holiday tournaments in November and December. Why would Power 5 schools give up two guaranteed home games to come to El Paso and play in a field possibly against UTEP? Especially when they make an easy six figures for those home games. If you are criticizing North Carolina Wilmington, you are not a fan of quality
college basketball. They have been one of the best teams in the country the last three years and will be the favorites to win the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in December. Fans just have to stop thinking about the 1980s and instead, look at this tournament as a quality RPI test for UTEP. The Miners do not have to pay for these two tournament games and they don’t have to return a game with a future road trip. That’s music to the ears of Tim Floyd and his coaching staff.
