LITERALLY, STAY CALM

Advice for dealing with financially challenging times

QUESTION: Advice for how to deal with the challenging economy, please?

THE CARD: King of Pentacles, Minor Arcana

Rulerships:

Taurus, Venus. Season: Winter. Element: Earth. Colours: Brown, Green. Direction: North.

The Deck:

The Rider-Waite ColemanSmith, fi rst published in 1910. Card illustration here by Aimée.

Lunar Position:

I cast the reading during the Waning Gibbous Moon in Capricorn, with white sage and compassion. May it harm none.

Description:

We fi nd The King of Pentacles in a lush environment full of ripe grapevines. The King’s throne is carved stone, ornamented with bull heads. His face is calm. He wears shining armour beneath opulent grape-covered robes, and on his lap rests a single golden pentacle. In one hand he holds a gold scepter. The king processes abundant worldly and spiritual wealth. His crown is embellished with red roses and at his feet is a carpet of vines and blossoms. In the background, we see part of his secure, large castle and kingdom.

Advice:

The King of Pentacles encourages you to stay calm and patient during these times of economic diffi culty. Cultivate endurance! Treasure and gain knowledge about how your fi nances work. Seek stable investors. Rash moves are not advised. Large gambles are not advised. Excessive gambling is not advised. Prosperity and wealth are indicated by the card; it may just take a little time and a lot of passion.

Yes, passion. The King of Pentacles is not only a king of sound investment, but he is also passionate—not only for love, but also for the world of sensuality. Hence, the red roses on his crown! Ruled by Taurus, this card reminds us to feel the moment, feel your feet on the earth, savour food, fully engage your senses, smell the roses. Nourishing the senses of your body is a good foil against fi nancial stress and anxiety. Notice and savour moments of physical delight. Deal with what is right in front of you, give your overtaxed mind a break. Invest in your passions.

Pentacles is the suit of the Earth element: here we fi nd all things physical, including money, gold, wealth, and the fruits of our labours. Pentacles reminds us there is great value in the health of the body: the fi ve points of the star inside the pentacle symbol refer to the hands, feet and head of the outstretched human form. In a rough economy, take good care of your body even if you feel you don’t have the energy! Invest in your health.

In the Pentacles suit, we see stories about personal worth being separate from our fi nancial profi les. In other words, there is no shame in being poor. The soul is priceless. And in times when you do have money, things, services or time to give to others, do so. The King of Pentacles invests in others and is generous. Hoarding is not advised.

Metaphorically speaking, what creates your armour? In what condition is your armour—polished and ready for battle, creaky and rusted, in need of embellishment?

Give it some thought. What makes you feel protected in times of uncertainty and how can you make yourself feel more secure? This does not have to be about investing only money, it could be about having honest and detailed conversations with loved ones about security—theirs and yours. This card reminds us to contemplate our truest, deepest values.

What do you value most? How can you invest more in what you value? n
