Living in a rural community like Atlin fosters self-sufficiency and a deep connection to the environment. However, there’s always room to enhance our preparedness. Whether navigating the Atlin back roads or getting ready at home, being prepared can make all the difference when the unexpected happens
Prepare for severe winter weather like snow, hail, high winds and power outages. Gather supplies and spend time with the people you live with to make your emergency plan.
Get started today by including these five winter specific considerations in your emergency plan:
1. Become a winter weather buddy: If you or someone you know lives alone or experiences mobility challenges, find or plan to be a winter weather buddy. A winter weather buddy can help with shoveling snow or running errands if you can’t leave home. Check in on each other.
2. Prepare your home: Learn how to keep your pipes from freezing. Insulating walls and attics and installing weather-stripping along doors and windows are good ways to prepare your home for winter.
3. Double check your emergency kit: Think about what you might need to stay safe and comfortable in your home if there is a power outage. Include a flashlight, batteries, an extra power bank, food you can eat without your electric stove or microwave and some warm clothes.
4. Prepare your vehicle too: Install winter tires and have an emergency kit in your car with winter specific items - like warm clothes, food, water, a blanket, booster cable, windshield scraper and sand or nonclumping kitty litter for traction.
5. Be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning: In the event of a power outage, never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven. Never use a camp stove, barbeque, propane or kerosene heater indoors. Use gas-powered generators and grills outdoors and away from windows.

Snow falling intensely, endlessly covering all without prejudice placing down layers of whiteness to fashion a lovely winter scene.
Snow falling with secrets on air as well as messages of hope accessible for those to hear with an ear prone to imagination.
At some point snow falling will cease there will be a hush upon us with time to cherish silence, contemplate this gift of beauty.
And welcome in The New Year with love for those we hold dear, grateful for all of our gifts and generous with our bounty.
