In my view, Atlin’s gold story began long before 1898. The Atlin Gold Story can actually be traced back to more than 250 million years before present, to the Permian-Pennsylvanian Geological Periods. At that time hot silica-rich solutions were depositing fluid gold along geological contacts and geological faults associated with Atlin’s Ultramafic rock formations. This hot fluid gold deposition likely continued through the Triassic-Jurassic and Dinosaur times, in other Atlin rocks, until the Cretaceous Period 65 million years ago.
Next came the Tertiary period, which ended 30 million years ago. Like other regions in North America, there was extensive geological up-lifting of terrains during the Tertiary Period. Atlin’s geological rock formations were uplifted too. Significantly for Atlin’s placer gold, this uplifting also occurred along Atlin’s geological contacts and fault zones. This uplifting and erosion brought Atlin’s gold, now cooled into hard nuggets in quartz veins, to the surface, freeing it. Atlin’s gold, now being free on the surface and within the geological contacts and fault zones was re-concentrated by erosion into the gut of the adjacent Atlin’s creek channels as placer gold. I interpret Pine Creek, Boulder-Otter, Birch, Ruby, McKee, Spruce creeks and others as a surface reflection of Atlin’s geological contacts and fault zones. Geological events however, can be complex.
About 100,000 years ago Atlin saw the onset of the last major Continental and Alpine glacial events, referred by geologists as the Wisconsin Glacial Period. Evidence within Atlin’s current terrain shows that thick glacier ice fields similar to present Llewelyn Ice field, heading North up Atlin valley into present Yukon. Even Atlin’s current townsite and valleys were covered by thick ice fields. These ice fields completely changed Atlin’s valleys and plains, depositing up to 30 metres of glacial tills, stratified glacial gravels and sediments, further burying Atlin’s placer gold into the gut of Atlin creek channels.
At the closing of the Wisconsin Glacial Period 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, when a period of global warming began, extreme and repeated flash flooding in some Atlin creek valleys followed. Pro-glacial lakes on creeks such as McKee, Lower Spruce, Pine-Panama Canal, Boulder repeatedly burst their ice dams, causing extreme torrents to flush-out glacial gravels down-stream, exhuming Atlin’s gold “pay” in those creeks, as we see today. Geological evidence indicates flash flooding did not occur in Upper Otter or Upper Spruce creeks as extreme torrents, leaving potential rich placer gold deposits buried under 30-metre of glacial tills, gravels and stratified sediments.
Recent archaeology discoveries suggest first humans arrived in North America between 13,000 to 30,000 years ago. The TRTFN, the first who came to this beautiful land, explored, albeit to hunt, fish, and to survive. The TRTFN could have been the first to know about gold on Pine Creek, long before 1898.
Today, Atlin needs to survive! Atlin needs young families to come here, find jobs, and prosper, while creating a young Atlin and robust versatile economy. Placer gold mining can help, provided it follows best practice and reclamation policies. Today, the AMPA needs clarification from the BC Government, TRTFN, Atlin businesses and Atlin citizens as to whether placer mining is still welcome. With that clarification a way forward can be navigated. The bottom line, Atlin cannot depend on Whitehorse tourism to produce a robust Atlin economy, and keep Atlin young.
