“Our Communities”

There are communities; where we live, where we work, where we relax.

We cherish the ones; where others have our back and we have theirs, where we receive respect and caring and return it freely, where we trust each other’s values and sense of honor.

There are communities we truly love being part of and give of ourselves fully. In return, our lives are enriched.

Randy Sands

January 26, 1962 to October 17, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Randy Sands following a brief illness, the result of a long battle with cancer.

Randy was born in Dawson Creek, B.C. to parents Lyman and Anne Sands & big brother Sheldon. Randy’s father was a B.C. Government Agent, and the family moved with each new posting. Randy spent his early years in Duncan B.C. and later moved to Penticton B.C. where he graduated in 1979. His love of antiques and collectibles started at an early age. His passion for vehicles, especially Fords, began in high school when he completely rebuilt a 1956 Ford ½ tonne pickup.

In 1982 Randy moved to Atlin B.C. where he joined his family in business, LASR North Holdings. Randy’s work focused on heavy equipment on & off-road mechanics, equipment operation, & trucking. He could repair and/or drive pretty much anything.

In 1986 he met his wife Cathie, and they married in March 1988. In 1990 they welcomed twins, Jordan and Natalie, and raised their children in Atlin B.C. until moving to Whitehorse Yukon in 2003. Randy continued working in the field of mechanics and later heavy equipment parts sales, until his retirement for health reasons in 2019. Randy’s passion for Ford Mustangs was widely known in the car community. He made many friends through the years that shared this passion for vehicles, both across Canada and the U.S..

A celebration of Randy’s life will be held in Whitehorse Yukon at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Center on November 9 at 2:00 pm. A Zoom option for the service will also be made available.

The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and caregivers at the WGH Cancer Care Clinic, medical day care, & lab who provided tender care to Randy over his 16+ years of cancer treatments. Plus, the wonderful staff at both WGH hospital & emergency and Wind River Hospice who cared for both Randy and his family in his final days.

In lieu of flowers we would ask that you hold your loved ones ever closer & share in the warmth of our remembrance of Randy.

(With Support from Atlin Community Organizations and Atlin area businesses)

The Atlin Placer Miners’ Association (“APMA”) has been active as both a support group and a social organization for placer mining in the Atlin area for several decades. The group has been somewhat dormant lately but is now reactivated as it is time to once again lobby for a return to a strong and economically vibrant placer industry.

Located on the traditional territory of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation lies the community of Atlin. Gold found in the local area creeks, during the era of the Klondike Gold Rush is the reason Atlin came into existence. The community was first formed along the Pine Creek Valley and was called the town of Discovery. In the early 1900, the community relocated to its current location on the shore of Atlin Lake.

For more than a century, placer mining was the main economic driver in Atlin, with local employment and utilization of local businesses. Over the past 5 years, the once booming placer mining industry has dramatically decreased to only a few small operations with minimal benefit locally. There are a lot of disgruntled and discontented people today in this community who are no longer able to make a living in the placer mines. Many are relocating elsewhere.

Why is this??? With the price of gold at all time highs the industry and community should be thriving. Due to delays of up to 3 years when issuing permits from the Ministry of Energy and Mines permitting office in Smithers, plus unaffordable bonding and regulatory fees most of the miners no longer are able to work in this region – affecting the entire local economy. As such, the Atlin Placer Miners’ Association has once more become actively involved in supporting the placer industry in Atlin.

Our industry fully complies with the recently approved BC Placer Mining Best Management Practices, the BC Mines Act, and the BC Ministry of Mines Health, Safety and Reclamation Code. The permitting issues appear to be strictly due to bureaucratic slowdowns and lack of timely, responsive communication from the permitting office. This has threatened the placer industry of Atlin to its core.

This dramatic decline in placer mining has been a detriment of the community as a whole –including families, businesses, equipment operators, mechanics, welders, even the Atlin school. Mining brings new money into the community, which currently is surviving on much lower valued, recirculated tourism dollars and government grants.

Fortunately, we feel this is not an open and shut case. APMA wants to get to the root of the problem so we can help fix it and make Atlin a vibrant community once again. Bureaucracy should not contribute to the divisive world we are living in.
