From Tablet to Scroll to Codex and Back Again: The History of the Jewish Book
For: Adults Mondays, beginning February 27, 7:15 pm at Temple Since antiquity, Jews have been known as the “people of the book.” In this course, taught by Rabbi Joseph Skloot, we will explore how and why this association emerged. Further, we will try to understand how certain key books — both their form and content — have shaped Jewish culture. Indeed, many central events of Jewish history have revolved around the production, dissemination and interpretation of the written word: the Hadrianic persecutions, the emergence of Christianity, the Maimonidean controversy, the birth of printing, the spread of the Enlightenment and mysticism, and the digital revolution, to name a few. No previous knowledge of Jewish history is required, only a willingness to read and discuss the key texts together. AMRAM SCHOLAR SERIES AND SISTERHOOD PRESENT: HOWARD BLUM
The Last Goodnight: A World War II Story of Espionage, Adventure, and Betrayal For: Adults Wednesday, May 24, 7:00 pm at Temple The story of an American debutante turned Allied spy is an ideal topic for an Amram Scholar Series lecture co-sponsored by WHC Sisterhood. Bringing it to life is bestselling author and former New York Times reporter Howard Blum, whose biography of secret agent Betty Pack — The Last Goodnight: A World War II Story of Espionage, Adventure, and Betrayal — has been optioned by Columbia Pictures. Born in 1910 and raised in Washington, D.C. as Amy Elizabeth Thorpe, this daughter of a distinguished Marine Corps officer was described in a 1963 Time magazine obituary as a “blonde Bond” who used “the boudoir as Ian Fleming’s character used the Beretta.” This program is presented in partnership with the Jewish Book Council. whctemple.org/Amram Layne Weiss: lweiss@whctemple.org, 202-895-6307
