We love Israel and are concerned about equal rights for all to love in Israel This is why, in partnership with the Israel Religious Action Center, three Israeli couples will be married at WHC in a triple wedding officiated by rabbis representing Judaism’s different movements. These couples cannot or will not marry in Israel under the auspices of the ultraOrthodox Chief Rabbinate for three very different reasons: one is a transgender, gay couple; the second has one partner that Israel’s Chief Rabbinate does not consider to be Jewish; and the third rejects the Rabbinate’s rigid control over Jewish marriage. Lifelong Learning WHC Academy The Drama of Judaism Today Mondays at 7:00 pm at Temple

This three-part semester will look at Judaism as a sociological, historical, and liturgical drama. We will begin by asking, “Who are the actors?”—a dive into Jewish identity in the 21st century. Then, we will examine the Haggadah and the Machzor, two of our major Jewish scripts. As texts we recite from and engage with yearly, they tell us where we have been, where we are, and where we want to go. Join us for one part or for all three— lend your voice to the ongoing drama that is Judaism today. RSVP required ($): whctemple.org/WHCAcademy Marsha Humphries: mhumphries@whctemple.org, 202-895-6303

The Actors: Who Are the Jews? February 4 – February 25

What is it to be a Reform Jew today? How has Israel informed our American Jewish identity? How has the presumption of white-privilege changed our Judaism? How do Jewish men and women differ? We will explore these questions of identity throughout the month. Join us as we create more questions than answers.

Script 1: The Haggadah March 4 – March 25

American Judaism has published more Haggadot than any other type of Jewish text. Why the need to write, adapt, and re-write? What does this text tell us about the communities who wrote them? What does this text tell us about us, the Jews who sit every year and recite these words? As we prepare for the celebration of Passover, this class will look at different types of Haggadot and other Passover rituals that have been added along the way.

Script 2: The Machzor (High Holy Day Prayer Book)

April 1 – April 29

This year, Washington Hebrew will be using the new Reform Machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh at our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Join us as we discover what these new pages have to offer. We will dive into the most iconic prayers and discover how Reform High Holy Day prayer books have changed over time. What do those changes say about the people who wrote them? What do those changes say about us, the people who currently engage with the text?

(((Semitism))): Being Jewish in America in the Age of Trump is the timely focus of Jonathan Weisman’s new book and related Amram lecture. The Deputy Washington Editor of The New York Times, Weisman explores how the Jewish experience in America has changed under President Trump and how society can move forward to fight anti-Semitism. He delves into the rise of the alt-right and their efforts to spread hate in a palatable way through a political structure now tolerant of their extremist views. Lifelong Learning The Amram Scholar Series (continued) Steven R. Weisman

Rabbi Ariel Burger and Nadine Epstein

“The Chosen Wars: How Judaism Became an American Religion”

The Life and Legacy of Elie Wiesel

In The Chosen Wars: How Judaism Became an American Religion, journalist Steven R. Weisman tells the dramatic story of how Judaism redefined itself in America in the 18th and 19th centuries and of the forceful personalities that shaped its evolution. Beginning with the arrival of the first Jews in New Amsterdam, Weisman examines how Judaism enhanced America and how America inspired Judaism. Along the way, we meet colorful rabbis and activists who ultimately define American Judaism and its division into the Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox movements that continue today.

Nadine Epstein, editor-in-chief of Moment Magazine, and Rabbi Ariel Burger come together to discuss the life and legacy of Elie Wiesel. Wiesel, who co-founded Moment in 1975 as a place of conversation for America’s Jews, became Nadine Epstein’s mentor when she took it over in 2004. Rabbi Burger was just 15 when he first met Wiesel, and for decades he studied and taught with him. As Wiesel’s former teaching assistant, Burger gives us a front-row seat in the classroom of the late Nobel laureate, activist, and author.

Sally Kohn – Closing Program and Reception Wednesday, May 15, 7:00 pm at Temple

For the closing program of the 2018-2019 Amram Scholar Series, activist and dynamic speaker Sally Kohn will discuss her book, The Opposite of Hate. Meeting with leading scientists and researchers, Kohn investigated the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and the theory that simple incivility can lead to horrific consequences. Through her research, Kohn traveled to Rwanda, the Middle East, and across the United States, where she spoke with terrorists, white supremacists, and even some of her own Twitter trolls, and drew lessons from their examples. A CNN political commentator whose TED talks have garnered millions of views, Sally Kohn points the way to positive social change through connection, which, as she illustrates, is the opposite of hate. Wellness Shabbaton

Whitney Lynne Ellenby

A Day of Balance for Adults and Teens

Join us for a special discussion led by Whitney Lynne Ellenby, author of Autism Uncensored: Pulling Back the Curtain. This book goes where no other dares, revealing the private disgrace and self-blame about having a “defective” child; the near disintegration of marriage; the failure of the traditional behavioral interventions; and the mercenary way in which service providers prey on parents’ desperation for a cure. This event is part of WHC’s Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum and is presented in partnership with the Jewish Book Council.

Your wellness and well-being are the focus of this unique Shabbaton that features a keynote from Rabbi Richard Address, the founder and director of Jewish Sacred Aging. Spend a day with us, and explore a wide range of workshops and mindfulness activities to help you reclaim the balance and flow in your life.

Women’s Seder

Alfred Moses to Discuss “Bucharest Diary”

There’s something incredibly empowering and affirming about attending a seder led by and for women. Before you sit down at your family seder, join Rabbi Shankman, Cantor Bortnick, and Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Michelle Citrin for our Women’s Seder. Michelle’s funky, soulful, folk-pop sound, powerful music, and viral videos including “20 Things to Do With Matzah” are just some of the reasons why Time.com included her in their top ten “New Jewish Rock Stars,” and the Jerusalem Post called her the “Jewish IT Girl.” Gather the women in your life from all generations and celebrate with us.

Alfred Moses served as the U.S. ambassador to Romania during the Clinton administration from 1994 to 1997, just a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. During this time, Romania faced economic paralysis and was still buried in the rubble of communism. Moses will discuss his memoir, Bucharest Diary: An American Ambassador’s Journey, which is filled with firsthand stories and colorful anecdotes of the public and private diplomatic efforts he employed to help Romania recover from four decades of communist rule and, eventually, become a member of both NATO and the European Union.

These couples cannot or will not marry in Israel under the auspices of the ultra-Orthodox Chief Rabbinate for three very different reasons: one is a transgender, gay couple; the second has one partner that Israel’s Chief Rabbinate does not consider to be Jewish; and the third rejects the Rabbinate’s rigid control over Jewish marriage.
