Rabbi’s Reflection Rabbi M. Bruce Lustig
T
oday, L’Chi Lach — Cantor Manevich’s signature song — echoed in my heart. It is from the Torah portion Lech L’cha, which begins with God’s command to Abraham, “Go forth from your land, from the place of your birth, from your father’s house, go forth to the place that I will show you.” It is God’s eternal command to us to go forth. We each have a story, a journey to pursue. There is something unique and very Jewish when we engage in the revelation of the intersection of time, place, meaning, and memory. It is at that intersection where I find myself today. I write to you from Jerusalem after an intense but fascinating day at the Hartman Institute where I am privileged to be a Rabbinic Fellow. We spent the day with Israeli rabbis discussing the realities, the frustrations, and the shared concerns about both the American Jewish community and the Israeli community (more on that discussion at another time). Our session opened with a question to each: “Explain your Jewish Journey. What led you to your rabbinate?”
“
growing up as a Southern Jew (read as “often the only Jew”) colored my experience. You have heard countless stories of the warmth and wonder of my grandparents, my Oma and Opa, who made Judaism, family, and love synonymous. My mother, an artist, is a creative and strong woman who made my childhood so positive and upbeat in both attitude and action. Yet, the ugliness of anti-Semitism, racism, and bigotry also saturated my world as a child and young adult in the South. I was proud to be a Jew, and I also knew the cost my mother’s family had paid for being Jewish in Nazi Germany. Then, the Nashville community presented a scholarship to me and said, “Go forth” to a new educational experience called High School in Israel (HSI).
There is something unique and very Jewish when we engage in the revelation of the intersection of time, place, meaning, and memory.”
Time-Place-Memory explored made the text of Genesis ring true. In the last week, I have been in three of the places that have influenced me the most in my Jewish Journey. The sudden death of my father had me back home in Nashville. I then flew to D.C. for shiva at my home and received the powerful warmth of Washington Hebrew Congregation, my community for more than 30 years. The next morning, I flew to Jerusalem for my fellowship work. Nashville is the place where my Jewish Journey began and continues to be the anchor of my story. It was the place my mother’s family came as refugees and Holocaust survivors to make a new life. My mother loves Nashville because this — then simple — Southern city gave her a chance for a new life with America’s gifts of freedom and safety. For this, she has never tired of giving thanks. Being the child of a survivor
HSI was an experiential high school where we studied the history of Israel while traveling to the very sites we studied. We read the story of Jericho in Jericho. We visited Jerusalem each time it played a key role in the history of our people. We stood on the Temple Mount and read the binding of Isaac. We explored the excavations of the Second Temple. We walked on the very stone streets the Romans built after the destruction of the Temple. We read the words, “The Temple Mount is in our hands,” spoken by Israeli soldiers 50 years ago at the place where they liberated Jerusalem after 2,000 years of longing. I also visited Yad Vashem, and in the archives read the names of unknown family members who perished in the camps at the hands of the Nazis. The list was bigger than my entire Confirmation class in Nashville. I wept at what had been lost and wondered what my responsibility was to have survived such an event. That question and my experiences at Reform Jewish summer camps turned my attention from photography to Jewish studies and then to rabbinical school. My love of Jewish camping made me Rabbi Weinberg’s, z”l, first choice to run WHC’s retreat program and join him as he became Senior Rabbi. That was nearly 32 years ago, and WHC has enriched my Jewish Journey beyond all belief. I get to be part of what Continued on page 16. WHC Journal – August 2017 | Page 3
President’s Column David M. Astrove
I
n June, I completed my first year as President of Washington Hebrew Congregation. It has been a rewarding, challenging, and enjoyable experience. I find it interesting, however, that the single most frequent question I have been asked is how much time it takes to serve as President of this congregation. Frankly, it does take time, and it is a rare day that goes by without having to do something. It is just as rare, however, for a day to end without my feeling humbled by the relationship that each congregant has with our synagogue, awed by the needs that are addressed each day by our clergy and staff, and amazed by the commitment of my fellow Board members, past and present. As with most every meaningful event in life, nothing worthwhile happens without effort.
“

The theme of this WHC Journal is “My Jewish Journey,” and on the pages that follow, you will read reflections some of your fellow congregants have shared about Judaism. In concert with this theme, I have been thinking about the role Judaism and Washington Hebrew Congregation play in my life. In addition to hosting monthly dinners this past year, as President — and a member — of Washington Hebrew Congregation, I have joined many of you at numerous Shabbat services, Amram lectures, Temple dinners, and tikkun olam events. I have also enjoyed getting to know our clergy, staff, and other congregants over breakfasts and lunches. I have presided over Board meetings, participated in committee meetings, and sent and received many emails and phone calls tending to WHC business. Such is the role of the President of the Congregation. Neither burdensome nor intrusive, on the contrary, each interaction with a fellow congregant or staff member and each service, program, and event I attended, was a source of personal meaning and fulfillment. They became a part of who I am as a Jew and a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation.
It is just as rare, however, for a day to end without my feeling humbled by the relationship that each congregant has with our synagogue, awed by the needs that are addressed each day by our clergy and staff, and amazed by the commitment of my fellow Board members, past and present.”
At its core, Washington Hebrew Congregation is a community. As a result, I view my role first and foremost to be one that promotes, enhances and celebrates that community. This past year Debbie and I hosted nine monthly Shabbat dinners — eight in our home and one at the Julia Bindeman Suburban Center. They were opportunities to bring congregants together for the sole purpose of creating community. More than 150 people attended one of these dinners last year, and we will begin the monthly series again in September. The schedule will be posted on the Temple’s website, and I encourage everyone to sign up. Whether you are a new member, a long-time member, a current or former leader, or a staff member, I am confident that you will discover unexpected, delightful commonalities with other Temple members, laugh, and feel good that you made this evening the start of your weekend.
Page 4 | WHC Journal – August 2017
The Jewish Journeys you read on these pages may inspire you to reflect on your own story and how Judaism and all that Washington Hebrew Congregation offers have enriched your life. More than that, however, I hope that they ignite in you a desire to make an extra effort to connect with our community and experience the joys that it can bring to each of us. I hope the remaining weeks of the summer provide an opportunity for you to relax, recharge, and reflect.

July 25, 2017 Rabbi M. Bruce Lustig, Senior Rabbi Mr. David M. Astrove, President Washington Hebrew Congregation 3935 Macomb Street NW Washington, DC 20016 Dear Bruce and David, It is with both sadness and excitement that I share my decision to join the faculty of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City next year, beginning July, 2018. My decision to leave Washington Hebrew Congregation was not an easy one and was made after much reflection. I feel blessed that WHC hired me three years ago and that I serve this extraordinary congregation alongside a distinguished clergy and leadership team. Jewish tradition offers us sound advice: “Get yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend.” In these last years, I have found many teachers and many friends at WHC. I cherish the Torah the congregation has taught me and the relationships we have formed. My new position will afford me the opportunity to train the future leaders of Reform Judaism and to help set the movement’s theological and ideological course. In this endeavor, I will no doubt seek inspiration from my experiences as one of WHC’s rabbis: preaching, teaching and standing beside the members of this congregation in moments of joy and grief. My position at HUC-JIR will begin next summer, allowing me the opportunity to continue sharing in these experiences as a full member of the clergy team for the coming year. I am grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to all that awaits the congregation in the next year. In gratitude and appreciation,

July 25, 2017 Rabbi Joseph Skloot Washington Hebrew Congregation 3935 Macomb Street NW Washington, DC 20016 Dear Joe, We, of course, take pride that the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion has chosen one of our own for its first addition to the faculty in 15 years. We celebrate this honor and achievement with you. You will carry forward what you have gleaned during your tenure at WHC when you teach a new generation of rabbis. We only hope that you have gained as much as you have given. We are delighted that you choose to spend this next year at WHC. As an Associate Rabbi, you will be fully engaged in rabbinic life here, to both teach and learn more before you take on this next stage in your professional life. Although it is easy for us to imagine new, vibrant opportunities here at the Temple, the move to New York is indeed a once-in-a-lifetime chance for you, to help shape the future of the American rabbinate as a member of the HUC facility. We know we share both the Congregation’s pride in this achievement and its sadness that this opportunity will end your tenure at WHC. We hope that just as the Temple generously let you teach at the college, that the college will, from time to time, see fit to let you come home! We are thankful for your decision to remain for the coming year to learn more from and give more to our WHC community. We look forward to a robust year of your continued engagement in Congregational life. We will have time for celebrations and appropriate goodbyes. Joe, if “home is where the heart is,” WHC will, in many ways, always be home because of the gifts you have given us from your heart. Shalom,

Elul E
A month for reflection and renewal
lul, the last month of the Hebrew calendar begins on August 23. In our Jewish tradition, this late summer/early fall month that precedes Rosh Hashanah is a time of reflection, and during Elul, many Jews take the time to consider their relationships with family and friends, their connection to community, and their faith.
On the pages that follow and throughout Elul on our website’s blog (whctemple.org/blog), you will find personal reflections that some of our Washington Hebrew Congregation members have shared. We hope they open the door for you to reflect on your own Jewish Journey. If you are interested in sharing your Jewish Journey on the WHC blog, please email your reflection, along with a photo, to communications@whctemple.org.

My Jewish Journey WHC members reflect on meaningful moments in their Jewish lives
Froma Sandler I was introduced to Washington Hebrew Congregation 60 years ago. My husband, Jerry Sandler, attended Religious School through Confirmation, a tradition that was followed by our children and grandchildren who are now fourth generation members. I became involved in the activities at Temple and was invited to become a member of the Board of Directors. There, I was able to appreciate and see the programs that were happening within our Congregation and community. In 1984, I was privileged to be elected the first woman president in the history of Washington Hebrew Congregation and am proud to say there have been many women presidents since! The clergy and members have helped my family in sad moments and times of joy. Washington Hebrew Congregation has been a lifeline to our family, and we know the importance it has played in the lives of many members of our Congregation.
Emily Muenzer Last summer I went to Israel, and I had my Bat Mitzvah at the Western Wall. When we arrived, I was really nervous, I don’t know why; I was with my family and Rabbi Lustig, but something felt different than when I usually practiced reading my Torah portion at home. This time, I was having a Bat Mitzvah in a place where just a few years ago, girls weren’t allowed to. I felt really proud as a girl who was having a Bat Mitzvah there. I was standing up for something that I believe is right: letting both boys and girls have a B’nei Mitzvah at the Western Wall.

My Jewish Journey
Shel West Judaism is my anchor. The community provides me with family, so important with my blood relatives far away in the middle of the country. Knowing that there are folks who miss me when I’m gone — well that’s a great reassurance. Judaism is my moral compass. Studying Torah and reminding myself of the essential values brings me back to striving for peace, even when the world around me is in turmoil. I see the core beliefs reiterated in the world around me, even in my dojo where humility and service are married to study. Judaism is my home. Not home in the sense of total comfort — since that has never been my experience. But it is the place where dichotomies are balanced, tension between differing concepts are not rent apart, but kept in spite of all differences. It is the reality check that more than one thing can be true, can exist, and be valid. I am dedicated to Judaism, to keeping it alive and tangible. I’m part of keeping Judaism modern and current, interpreting Torah to meet the world around me, defining it with other Jews around me through the push and pull of study and discourse.
Matthew Reiskin Sitting on the bimah at my son’s Bar Mitzvah, I gaze out at family and friends, and I’m drawn back 40 years. The sanctuary is darker, without stained glass windows. Cantor Garber is queuing me to go to the pulpit. I chant with Rabbi Weinberg at my side, and I can hear my father in my speech. Our son chants musically and presents his speech with poise. In addressing him, my wife tells of her family background in China, bereft of religious tradition, and she is glad for the rich culture that Judaism has brought to our family. I tell him that Jewish values will guide him through challenges in his life. Of the many choices between my Bar Mitzvah and his, we have decided to give our kids a Jewish education which will serve them throughout their lives, and perhaps for another generation.

My Jewish Journey
Irene Pollin Let me begin this blog by saying, “I have never separated my Judaism from me.” I love being Jewish and everything that it means. I am proud of my religion and my culture and what it has given me and continues to give me. I love the fact that you can be a “good Jew” whether it’s once a year or once a week. It was the image I remember of my tiny Baba (barely five feet tall) sitting every day at her kitchen table, her head buried in the huge Torah, and the funny, a little off color, stories she told me when I was in bed with chicken pox. The pride I felt holding her hand as we walked into the synagogue on the High Holy Days and her four white-haired bearded brothers greeting us. I am experiencing the joy of being Jewish participating in the joyful Sabbath celebrations of my granddaughter and her daughters. As they hold hands and sing the prayers, I feel again the beauty being Jewish can give you and what my Baba Shifra gave me.
Lewis Wiener Everyone is wearing white. Boys and girls, teens and adults, all in white, walking, singing, meeting at Crossroads. Camp Eisner, late 1970s. Song leaders leading the procession, leading us to Shabbat. My Jewish journey from religious school, Friday night services with my family, bar mitzvah, confirmation, youth group, NFTY, all led to Crossroads at Camp Eisner and has paved my Jewish path since. My Jewish identity is cultural. I relish the Passover seder knowing that my family is another link in a thousands year old chain keeping our Jewish traditions alive and adding to our people’s rich mosaic. Alisa and I were married at Washington Hebrew, each of our children, just weeks old, blessed on the bimah, the same bimah on which they would stand as a bar or bat mitzvah. We have shared grief and joy, the full circle of life with our temple family. We celebrate Shabbat at home and in the Crossroads of my mind.
Stacey Eisenstein This year has been a year of reflection for me. Watching my son become a Bar Mitzvah in the same sanctuary where I became a Bat Mitzvah reaffirmed my sense of belonging in the community and the important role Washington Hebrew Congregation has played in all of the significant milestones in my family’s life. I’m so grateful that my children can be a part of this community and continue the traditions and values that my parents instilled in me. WHC Journal – August 2017 | Page 11
My Jewish Journey
Jacques Berlinerblau The High Holy Days have the grace to arrive in September or October, during the sunniest weeks of the school year. Academically speaking, that’s the period when everything is suffused with hope, when the potential of every student and teacher seems boundless. True, when the first Day of Awe comes it actually interrupts classes. But it never feels like an imposition. Naturally, I loved the day off from school afforded by Rosh Hashanah when I was I kid (likely as much as my two sons savor it now). In recent years, however, I’ve come to relish the Rosh Hashanah holiday in a way that I surmise a hundred generations of Jewish educators have before me. It’s a time to dream about all the amazing things one can do as a teacher in the year ahead. Just as a week later Yom Kippur impels me to remember all the mistakes I made in class as a teacher, and outside of class as a son, father, husband and friend.
Jamie Hanenbaum Groban It has been three decades since I became a Bat Mitzvah at Washington Hebrew Congregation, and WHC has continued to be a meaningful part of the milestones in my Jewish life … attending Alexander Muss High School in Israel at the encouragement of Rabbi Lustig, my wedding to Aaron, the Bris and baby naming of our children followed by their attending the ECC and Religious School, and a myriad of Jewish holiday celebrations. And for 11 years of that time, I served as the Development Director for our Congregation, sharing the milestones of our congregational community. As our son Ryan, prepared for his Bar Mitzvah this year, it caused me to reflect on the fact that my Judaism isn’t only about these major events. It is also anchored in the “small moments” — seeing our kids take turns lighting Shabbat candles at our dinner table, sharing carpool talk after Religious School to hear about what they’re learning, and volunteering with Carrie Simon House. These routine moments and everyday choices keep Judaism part of my life on the many days from one Rosh Hashanah to the next.

Needing to sweep a doubleheader in the finals over B’nai Shalom of Olney, WHC won the first game convincingly 13-5 and came back to win game two 9-8, sparked by a three-run home run by Dan Smith and bases-clearing triple by Jason Cohen. A dominating force, the Hebrew Nats have won five consecutive championships. Advanced Accreditation Renewed for WHC Libraries Earlier this summer, WHC librarian Ellen Share attended the 52nd annual conference of the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) in New York City. There, on the Temple’s behalf, she received our AJL advanced accreditation renewal. This prestigious accreditation signifies that WHC’s libraries have met high standards in the areas of collection development, programming, funding, and staffing. Ellen was also among a small group of librarians selected to speak at the conference. Her presentation, “The Great White Way,” focused on three Broadway shows — Porgy and Bess, West Side Story, and Fiddler on the Roof — and what each revealed about race, ethnicity, and religion in our country. Kol hakavod (job well done), Ellen! We appreciate your commitment to WHC’s libraries and the support you provide to the Association of Jewish Libraries. Page 16 | WHC Journal – August 2017

Rabbi’s Reflection
(continued from page 3) another Rabbinic Fellow calls longitudinal Judaism. Under the chuppah, I join the bride I consecrated and the groom whose Bar Mitzvah I officiated. I confirmed both of them as well. I see and feel the rhythms of Jewish life in the souls of this vibrant community. I have had the privilege to be part of your Jewish Journeys. I sit in my rented apartment in Jerusalem. I still visit the places where Judaism and Jewish history happened, but now I know I am part of the making of that history as well. I study here to help us shape Judaism’s future. I am here still searching Judaism’s legacy of learning for meaning and moments that will lead me and others to God and one step closer to the place God has promised each of us. If we are willing to lech l’cha … go forth. Shalom, Rabbi Lustig
