When they arrive at the station to meet her, the children find her in a tree. She explains that a lion wants to eat her. There is no sign of a lion but as the days pass and to the family’s great amusement, Aunt Alice remains convinced that there is a lion lurking behind every bush, just waiting to pounce. Could Aunt Alice be right? The Elephants Are Coming: Ten-year-old Themba dreams of joining his father and older brother in chasing the elephants away if they should come to eat their corn, as they did last year. Sadly, everyone tells him that he is too young and must stay at home to protect his mother, sister and grandfather while his father and brother are away. But danger lurks much closer to home! GET READY FOR KIRSTENBOSCH'S WINTER WONDERLAND | CapeTown ETC

Let’s all agree to disagree here, parents hate it when it’s school holidays, because it means they will be on their feet, making food for the little ones, chasing after them while they try to break down the house. The cries, the mess, the shouting… It all gets too much. Thank goodness Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is hosting a winter wonderland this year. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is considered to be one of the most divine gardens in Africa, and arguably one of the best in the world. Kids will deတnitely love Kirstenbosch, as it is home to a wide variety of unique, beautiful plants and is nestled amid the absolutely splendid mountains of Table Mountain National Park. This will certainly get the kids excited before they even တnd out what they really will be doing in this veritable Garden of Eden – learning at the Winter Wonderland or, should I say, Winter Wonder-school.

This happens from 9 am – 11:30 am, after which any adventure that is lined up for that day takes place. Friday mornings from 10 am – 11 am are dedicated to Struik Nature’s author readings. Children can enjoy a day of fun, food and natural beauty atop Table Mountain, and even a kiddies’ treasure hunt. We had so much fun at the kick off of the season, you can read about it here. 3. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Most of the events are free of charge, and there are also family focused activities for all to join in. One of the highlights is a puppet show at Moyo restaurant retelling a San/African folktale followed by a guided walk with a botanist, Ernst Van Jaarsveld. I arrived at Kirstenbosch at about 9:30 in the morning. Ok, that’s not entirely true. I arrived at about 8:30 and drank a hot chocolate in the car, while writing for an hour before grabbing my kit and heading inside the bookshop at 9:30. I was greet by the Kirstenbosch Bookstore team – Mark and Greg. They offered me a coffee while I wait and I headed into the kiddies area.

I was so impressed with Kirstenbosch. There were mini chairs and a lovely table display of Katya Cat books, along with the Kirstenbosch trade mark – a gorgeous vase with proteas. Julia Richman, the author, arrived with her book as well as Belinda, from http://mrsbeckerling.co.za/index.php/2016/07/07/kirstenboschwinterwonderlandanawesomeday/

Kirstenbosch Winter Wonderland – An awesome day! – Mrs Beckerling

Richman, the author, arrived with her book as well as Belinda, from Penguin Random House. Belinda was carrying under her arm a 䔀ipchart for me to use while I illustrate. With a wink, she informed me she ‘borrowed’ it from the CEO’s of匀ce. I couldn’t have been more pleased. I was going to use the CEO of one of the best publishing companies in South Africa (and the world!) to illustrate Katya’s characters. What a treat!

Somethin g Extra Ordinarily when Julia and I get together to do a reading, we normally have about twenty minutes to get through about three or four chapters. She reads the 匀rst chapter which is all about Katya and I draw Katya while she reads. She then reads Chapter 2 which is about Auntie Bea, so I draw Auntie Bea. The third chapter is a toss between illustrating the seagull, Freddy, or the fat hotel cat, Chubbs. Then we do a little Q & A, hand out some colouring-in drawings of the characters for the kids to take home and sum it up. Today we had an hour to 匀ll. I was so excited. Julia and I had previous agreed we would do something a little extra special. I had the absolute honour of teaching the kids how to draw Katya after the third chapter was read. We handed out the colouring in drawings, I told them to turn them all around, so they had blank pieces of paper and Kirstenbosch handed out wax crayons. Before you knew it, I had about 20-30 kids all following my every move. I was so impressed with the level of drawing skill this kids had. They had the character spot on. I saw some wonderful uses of colour for all the varies different elements and each cat was completely individual. We then turned our drawings back round and I spend another twenty minutes or so going round and praising all the beautiful colours they used on the various characters they had.

are my favourite ages. I can’t tell you all the names of the kids I met today, as I think one of the most boring question you can ask a kid is ‘what is your name?’ It’s right up there with ‘what is your age?’ Only adults ask those type of questions. I was must more interested in what they were doing. Do they have their own pets at home? Is that your favourite colour? Much more interesting than their name. I was really impressed with one

boy. Penguin Random House did a little raf䔀e prize after we had 匀nished drawing and so Belinda was handing out numbers. I was just taken back, when I heard a boy about eight years old, pick a number, then ask for a second number for his little sister who was about four. Just great to know that big brothers like that still exist in the world (I have a big brother like that, so I really related to this situation). Then there was Erin and Rebekah (that’s how you spell her name – isn’t it awesome?). Two amazing girls who just couldn’t

Drie Baasspeurders Vi le Roux R69.00

tell me enough about how they love to draw and colour in. I had another sister and brother combo who coloured in their cats like tabbies, although the boy informed me sternly that they didn’t have any cats when I asked. There was a little munchkin girl all in pink who just loved chattering next to me. I got the best hug from her when she left. And then there was another little girl, who when I asked her to smile for the photo, she opened her mouth really wide and showed me all her teeth! I don’t think she had quite grasped the concept of a smile yet! It was awesome!

A Big Thank You! I have to just add here a big thank you to Belinda from Penguin Random House for organizing the event, as well as the two gents from the Book store who put out all the chairs, tables and displays (especially for the coffee!) and a big thank you to Julia Richman, who without her imagination and writing skills the story would never have happened!

Kirstenbosch’s Birthday It was a cold rainy day and the gardens turned 103 years old… we went for a romp in the rain, honestly the gardens are good whatever the weather. If it really is pouring with rain you can head for the conservatory… but for the most part at Cape Town’s winter showers there are sets in the garden where you can wait out a little rain and when the sun emerges again you can head off.

The Winter Wonders Program Apart from the gardens being free for children, there are a number of fantastic events on. This is certainly not the time to stay home because it is cold and wintry. A number of book events, because every body loves books… brought to you by Struik Nature Books, and a number of events bright to you by Kirstenbosch themselves. We haven’t been able to go every day… but if we could have we would have. Read on read on…

The events include arty crafty things, treasure hunts and a collection of South Africa’s best loved children’s natural factual authors reading their stories at “meettheauthor” events. From our own experience, there is nothing like meeting an author to create a passion for books in a child. You can download the full programme here. Honestly Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Struik Nature (Penguin Random House South Africa) have put together a stunning programme for children these holidays, really beautifully presented, well planned and something not to be missed… http://www.se7en.org.za/

Snake Encounters The first event that we joined was a snake encounter with Johan Marais, the author a number of snake and reptile books in South Africa, including the Complete Guide to Snakes and What Snake is that?

He was happy to field dozens of questions and provide us with lots of incredible facts…

Then he went on to show us a few of the snakes he had brought along to show everyone…

And then everybody had a chance to meet up and play with the snakes that he brought with him. I was astonished to discover that while I preferred to be on the other side of the camera, my kids were thrilled at the chance to get to meet the snakes up close and personally.

In fact one of us actually loved the whole event… and we had a long discussion about snakes being wild animals and best we leave them there.

On Saturday mornings, throughout the winter school holidays, they have a series of themed, family friendly treasure hunts. We decided to try them out and we were so impressed… what a difference it makes to have knowledgable and enthusiastic guides to show you around the gardens. We always learn something new when we visit there, but my word with an engaging guide we learnt so much more…

There are four different treasure hunts to follow… flowers, streams and rivers, trees and the (in case of rain) the conservatory… Our friendly guide took us off on the tree trail, and as we learnt about a number of weird and wonderful trees we also traversed the gardens…

Taking a little longer at each tree meant that we spotted things that we don’t often see… http://www.se7en.org.za/

So many weird and wonderful trees to stop and look at or even listen to, yes one tree you can hear making little snaps as you stand beneath it. Each tree was presented with a bit of a story to help you remember what you had learnt… really a brilliant presentation.

And always good a wander over the boomslang walkway…

And everytime we pause on the walkway and take a breathe, we spot something magical…

We learnt about all sorts of trees, including these magnificent ancient trees…

The whole event literally flew past… we covered a lot of ground, but all at a very easy “chatting as you go” pace.

The idea was that the you head out into the gardens and find twenty five of the items off the list of fifty… take a photograph of the team with their discovery… and dash on. It wasn’t as easy as you might think… finding an ant is actually a little tricky and trying to get a bird with your gang in the picture – well impossible!!! This is an activity that would be fun to do with your kids or a group of friends anytime…

Monday turned out to be the absolute perfect day for adventuring. It may have started with everyone in sweaters, but very quickly the sun warmed us up, in the middle of winter we were dashing around in tshirts gathering treasures on camera…

A Kite’s Flight by William Gumede, illustrated by Maja Sereda: This is the story of Andile, who is a little boy that lives in Cape Town. He makes a kite with his Papa. The wind lifts the kite into the sky… and the kite flies across Africa and a number of landmarks on the way… over grasslands, over jungle and over the Sahara desert. the kite flies all the way to a little boy called Ahmed in Egypt, who together with his Papa, plan to fix the weather worn kite, so that the kite will be ready for another journey.

For crosscultural picture books Barefoot Books can’t be beat… and these books by Laurie Krebs are part of a round the world series and are fabulous… they have a rhythm and rhyme… and joy to them that is uplifting. These are books that you and your children are going to want to read again and again.

This book is delightful… and demonstrates the generosity of hospitality that we have found all over Africa… it doesn’t matter how little you have, you still invite everyone over. The back of the book has a couple of interesting facts and a map (vital for young map lovers) and a recipe. We had to adjust the recipe a little when we made them, as we doubled and tripled and quadrupled the recipe… the great thing about this recipe is the yummy spices inside them… gotta love!!!

Anna Hibiscus is pure delight, set in modern day Africa. The story of a little girl whose family and extended family enjoy life in a village, except for her mother’s family who live in far off Canada. The author presents some delightful chaos that naturally happens when living in a full and multigenerational household. The stories celebrate life in a village in Africa and the joy and sweet attitude of Anna makes these books a great place to escape. Once you read one Anna Hibiscus story you will want to read them all… these are the kind of stories that you just want to climb into.

By the same author as Anna Hibiscus, meet the delightful character No 1, who lives in a village “somewhere” in Africa. He is called No 1 because he lives on the main road into town and so gets to hear cars going past and is always the first to identify a car going by, from the sound of the engine. This is a game we used to play as kids, “spot the car just by listening.” Anyway, No 1 gets into a number of boyish scrapes and does his fair share of getting into and out of trouble. All the while the reader gets to learn about life in a very different culture, with different family values, different food… and really a different world to the one they live in.

These are on our wish list… and come highly recommended. The ever popular No 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexandar McMcall Smith now has a prequel for young readers and we meet our detective, Precious Ramotswe, as a child. Her father provides mysteries for her to solve If you have a child that loves mysteries then I have a feeling that they are going to love these…

se7en — The life and times of a home schooling mom of se7en + 1.

This book is a family favourite, and the author tells his own story. It is about his life journey, from the plains of Africa as a Massai cattle herd, to the world of medical school in the United States. It begins with the antics of life as a young boy, part of a nomadic family and his responsibility to look after the family wealth, their cattle. At the time, every family had to send one child to school… and he tells of his life at school… and how difficult it was. The memoir continues with him as he grows up… Despite going to college and university in the United States, he still returns to his family and his roots for a couple of months each year… and even this provides some amusing incidents with tourists visiting his village. I read this inspiring book as an adult and could not put it down, it provides a deep insight into a life that most of us cannot begin to imagine.

This story is not just incredible because it says so on the cover or because it is true, it is a really rather epic story because most of us don’t really believe in miracles. We are wrong of course. This is the story of a boy who reaches rock bottom, living on the streets in Zimbabwe. He was abandoned by his mother at a very young age and has to fend for himself… and his two younger siblings. Poverty is the least of his worries… An astonishing event when he is twenty turns his whole life around. This book is the junior version of Out of the Black Shadows, it is an astonishing read and a story of hope and encouragement for all of us. We highly recommend this book and certainly all my kids will read it sometime during their school career.

This book is a must read, spoiler alert there is a tragedy within the pages, but learning about coping with tragedy within the safety of the pages of a book is bot a bad thing, per se. This is the story of Solomon, a village boy who loves to run… you can feel the dust between your toes as you read this book… it is beautifully written and will leave you feeling like you have been on a journey there. this is one of those books that will take Africa from being just “a place on a map” to a place rich with people, with passion and hopes and dreams.

Book of the Week: Se7en Discover Owls and Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise… July 3rd, 2016 · 2 Comments Sometimes a book cries out for a little craftiness, not to mention a little actual factual discovery. Let’s Meet the Books These books are written about real children in a real place, they are set in a village in Zimbabwe and the context and drawings reminded me so much of my travels through Africa that it felt a bit like it is time for another adventure… in the meantime it was very relatable for my children to see homes and families like the ones they have visited in their travels. One of the best features of these books is that there isn’t just a “fact page” at the end of the story, but there are several pages of photographs and short facts at the end of the story. These stories are based on true encounters that the author has had on her travels to and from this village and the photographs bring that reality to the hearts of their young readers. Our kids loved these pages, they totally made the stories real for them.

The Elephants are Coming by Lindsay Norman and Isak Vollgraaff: In this story we are introduced to Themba and his family. Themba is ten and feels that he is quite old enough to go with the men folk of the village to chase off the elephants that are coming to eat the village crops in the night. Poor Themba is desperate to be big, and he begs and begs… but no, he has to stay home and look after Grandma and the rest of the family. While Themba is sleeping he dreams he hears the elephants coming, of course it isn’t a dream at all and Themba has to save the day…

Aunt Alice and the Lion by Lindsay Norman and illustrated by Izak Vollgraaff: Aunt Alice is visiting Themba and his family, she needs a break from city life and is coming to rest in the countryside. When the children go down to the station to meet Aunt Alice, she is no where to be found, until they realise that she is up the tree and hiding from a lion. Of course the children don’t see the lion. Throughout the story, Aunt Alice has a number of “close encounters.” There are a number of very funny and close encounters, but never any sign of the lion. In fact, Spoiler alert… Aunt Alice snores, it couldn’t possibly be a lion roaring!!! This book is funny and charming and there is a lovely little twist in the tale, turns out Aunt Alice isn’t quite as crazy as everyone thinks she is.

Let’s Meet the Author/Illustrator Team http://www.se7en.org.za/2016/07/23/se7enmeetsupwithafabulousauthorillustratorteamatkirstenboschgardensagiveaway

By way of introduction, Lindsay Norman has an interesting story to tell… and one that will resonate with our readers. Just as our annual “Build a Library Book by Book Project” began for us with a trip to a rural school in Lesotho, so she has a literacy project in the heart of Africa. Lindsay Norman is a founding member of the Hwange Schools Project, which is a literacy outreach project to rural children in the region south of the Hwange National Park in South Western Zimbabwe. The goal of the project is to promote literacy for the students, by providing box libraries, teaching resources, and teacher training. She and her team also visit the schools for writing workshops, and have writing competitions for the students. They are doing a great outreach there and you can read more about her project here.

Se7en + 1 Questions for Lindsay Norman 1. Did she always now she would be a writer? Yes, she has been writing her whole life. She wrote and illustrated her first book when she was 11, and was mortified when her teacher read it to the class. 2. Does She have favourite childhood books? She was a prolific reader and loved the classics like The Secret Garden, Noel Streetfield, and Anne of Green Gables, Montgomery. 3. What About a Local Children’s Author? She recommends Helen Brain, who has just written Jamie and the Magic Whistle and Jamie and the Horse Show, which sound really funny. 4. Does she have a message for South African Readers? South African books tend to be put in a corner at book shops, but we have a wealth of talent here. When you go shopping for books make sure you don’t overlook local books… take a look at the local books on offer, you will be pleasantly surprised. 5. Does she have a message for Overseas Readers? Don’t overlook stories that are emerging from Africa, they tend to be exotic and different to your typical fair. Wonderful wildlife adds to the appeal of children everywhere. Also, South African authors tend to have a quirky, different sense of humour. 6. Does she have any advice for young writers? Write about what you know, that way the words will flow. You can’t force stories, her stories just popped up out of events that had happened in real life. For example, while she was visiting in Zimbabwe there was great excitement in the village, when everyone knew the elephants were coming and they would have to protect their crops. 7. What is her Writing Style? She has a nine to five day job, so when she gets a snippet of inspiration she tends to mull things over while driving home or walking the dogs, and things just pop into her mind. As soon as she gets a chance she takes her ideas and sit on her stoep and types them into her laptop. And the Se7en + 1th: 8. Who has been her Inspiration? She and her sisters are really close and her sister has always been her biggest fan and encourager.

Se7en + 1 Questions for Izak Vollgraaff The first words that he said to me were, “Children need their own stories, even books written by South Africans can be very EuroCentric.” How very true is that, I am all for books written for children in their own cultural context. Not only does it provide a living book for the child to read, that they can relate to but it helps children from other cultures to visit different cultures and get a much richer view of the world. 1. Has he always created art? When he was a child, art just wasn’t cool. He did draw for his three sisters, and kept their paper doll collections up to date, but that was about it. They didn’t have any art at school. 2. Did he Always Want to be an Artist? Actually his father wanted him to be a technician, but when he finished with his compulsory army stint, a friend bought him art materials to create a portfolio and he managed to get into the Technikon on that. After that he had to figure how to pay his fees. 3. What did he do after Studying? After he had finished his studies his dad sent him on an “Art Tour.” He visited eight countries looking at art all the way. 4. Was sort of Work did he do? He was an illustrator at the Magazine: Landau Weekblad, now he illustrates children books and has done for the last fortyfive years. Now that he is an illustrator he loves his work, he loves the research that he needs to do to create his art and he loves that he gets to travel all over Africa so that he can create authentic art… he likes to look inside peoples homes, and see how they cook and how they carry their water. Research is essential to good illustrating. 5. What is his work style? I was expecting, organised or chaotic, but his reply was, “Flat out, all the time.” If you are going to be an artist then expect to work hard all the time, 247. 6. Does he have a message for young folk? He doesn’t understand why art is discouraged as a career choice, almost everyone needs artists nowadays… you cannot run a business or design anything without the help of an artist. There is a lot of work in art, it is a valid career. There is real money in art for potential students. 7. Should Everyone be Encouraged to Draw? Of course, he doesn’t believe that some folk can’t draw, “If you can draw a circle, a square and a triangle, then you can draw anything.” 8. Who was his biggest encourager as an artist? He didn’t have one… but his biology teacher asked if he could keep his biology book at the end of the school year and he liked that. Also his history teacher gave him a historical map assignment over the holidays… and he loved that, he really enjoyed doing the research that needed to be done to create the map.

And a Wander Through the Magic That is Kirstenbosch Of course the story reading happened at Kirstenbosch, so we took an amble through the gardens afterwards. It was a slightly rainy day, and someone told my children that Kirstenbsoch was dreadful in the rain… we had to prove them wrong and went looking for some magic…
