Theater program earns 10th national festival nom Wheeler’s Theater program has been nominated for the 10th time to the American High School Theatre Festival that takes place at Edinburgh’s famous Fringe Festival. Wheeler was nominated for the upcoming 2020 festival by Trinity Repertory Company director Curt Columbus who wrote, “I have worked with the students in this program on many occasions and find them to be some of the most thoughtful and most passionate theater artists I have encountered at any high school in America. Their teacher, Lisa Brackett, challenges them to do work that is extremely demanding for their age, and their shows are always well executed and well produced.” To which we say, Bravo Wheeler!

ALUMNI PROFILE

Grace Evans ’15 — Activist and Scholar Grace Evans ’15 is an activist and a scholar — a title she’s held since her days as a student at The Wheeler School. Currently a senior at Harvard, she is writing her Senior Thesis on the Sanctuary Movement. In January during a visit to Wheeler, Grace spoke to students about her formative experiences as a queer woman (a founding member of the campus Queer Straight Alliance) her work as an activist and an organizer, and how her passion for activism and organizing has continued throughout her college career. “There’s definitely a lot of emotional labor that goes into this kind of work and time, but for me, it feels really important and necessary to be engaged in,” said Grace. The Sanctuary Movement is a faith-based movement of religious congregations and other allied groups working to defend immigrants who have deportation orders and to secure physical sanctuary in places of worship. This summer Grace spent time at the US-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley and in Austin, TX, where she worked with organizations protesting the Zero Tolerance Immigration policy.

“I advocated for immigrants in a legal sense and in the public sphere. I listened to the life-changing stories of people who are being dramatically impacted by our current immigration policies, stories that should have been heard by Border Agents,” Grace said. “We provided material support, things like soap and food, held vigils and visited the towns on the other side of the border. It was a wild time to be there, but I learned a lot,” she said. Grace will graduate from Harvard in Spring 2019 with her Bachelor of Science in Social Studies.

Wheeler Hosts Conference for Coalition “Friends”

More than 100 educators gathered in the fall on campus as Wheeler hosted the first Conversation Among Friends, a daylong conference celebrating the work and impact of educator Ted Sizer’s Coalition of Essential Schools. Presentation topics ranged from creating intentionally-integrated schools, developing a “shore school” at an urban elementary school, learning from difficulties, and moving from breadth in content coverage to depth. Head of School Allison Gaines Pell said of the conference experience: “Nancy Sizer, a history teacher at Wheeler for many years (we named our annual Upper School History Award in her honor) and Debbie Meier, co-founder of the Coalition of Essential Schools and legendary school founder, gave compelling remarks, leaving us with timely questions about educators’ roles and responsibilities in ensuring and sustaining a vibrant democracy. They each asked in some way: How can we ensure that we raise a generation that asks questions about what is, and what could be? How can we ensure that we nurture students who can listen to one another, and who can hold more than one perspective at a time? And how can we ensure that our students all understand more deeply the full range of needs of many people in a democracy? I am very glad that Wheeler led the way to provide a home for this conversation.”

New Regional Diversity Conference Finds Home At Wheeler This April, Wheeler will host schools from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and nearby Connecticut in the first Wheeler Diversity Conference as part of the Pollyanna, Inc. network.

Learning Wheeler’s Powers: Creating Our Future → At a Board of Trustees meeting in May, we agreed that the precept worked beautifully as a new mission statement for the School. Over the spring, summer, and fall, we engaged members of our community, including parents, students, alumni and, of course, faculty and staff, in the process of aligning with our accrediting body, and with our own beliefs and practices. The Benefits To Our Students

The Natural Counterpoint at The Farm The Wheeler Farm is a natural resource unique to Wheeler that currently houses most of our athletic facilities. Various grades—most intensively, the 6th grade Farm Program—already spend time at the Farm. Dakota Whitworth ’10 — A Passion For Fashion By Meryl Willett

Dakota Whitworth ’10 turned her passion for style and fashion into a successful business. In 2016 Dakota quit her full-time job as an assistant buyer at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, TX to focus on starting her own company—the contemporary fashion boutique, Harper & Tucker that she began with business partner, Natalie Swift. From launching the Harper & Tucker online store in 2016 to opening a storefront in Newport, RI in 2017, Dakota’s business has continued to grow to add a seasonal pop-up shop at Legacy Place in Dedham, MA, and a second, permanent location in Wayland Square, Providence, RI, opening Spring 2019. A part of their ‘business plan’ is to give back and in December, their company hosted a Holiday Gift Drive for Rosie’s Place, a shelter for women based in Boston, MA. “Harper & Tucker is a women’s company in every way—we were founded by women, we style women, and we do what we can to support women,” said Dakota. “Our entire team is made up of amazingly talented women: from our photographer to our graphic designer, our employees in the shop, to the reps and the brands we work with.

“Our goal is to celebrate women and to offer clothing that makes them feel happy, beautiful, and comfortable in their own skin.” With the excitement of a second location (so close to Wheeler) in the not too far off distance, Dakota says the magic of Harper & Tucker is their unique collection of beachy, breezy bohemian style clothing, attention to detail and personal styling, and their two golden retrievers, the real Harper and Tucker, who can often be found at the store.

The Wheeler School will partner with NuVu Innovation School in Cambridge, MA, next fall to Half Height Glazing (+4’) pilot the first NuVuX Studio Term in Rhode Island, offering admission to the program to students Workbenches enrolled in Wheeler’s Upper School. Starting fall of Workbench with Storage Underneath 2019, Upper School students will be able to choose to participate in a series of “studios” which will be developed in a unique collaboration between Wheeler and the team at NuVu. Each studio will NuVuX Studio Term offers center on a large-scale problem and a “handsstudents an immersive adventure on-minds-on” project-based, team approach in project-based learning Laser Cutter Existing Sh and Heating to solution-seeking that will have an impact on the community or world. Custom experiences are currently in development with a group of Wheeler faculty and the NuVu team. Science faculty member Christine Perkins said about the new program, “The NuVuX program offers students an immersive adventure in project-based learning. They will explore their ideas deeply, all the while collaborating with peers. They will embrace mistakes and discover which of their mistakes are the most valuable. They will change their own minds and the minds of others. They will learn to follow through on projects, from the very seeds of ideas to completely constructed products. The joyful, play-based program is driven by students’ inspiration from the woods, fields, and waterways of the 120-acre Wheeler Farm

Forest Fridays To build on an already robust Early Childhood curriculum of both structured and unstructured play, Wheeler created “Forest Fridays” at The Wheeler Farm. Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten children take the bus with their friends out to the Farm on periodic Fridays to explore nature, play together, develop independence, build creativity “muscles” and extend imagination. The joyful, play-based program is driven by students’ inspiration from the woods, fields, and waterways of the 120-acre Wheeler Farm and supported by faculty with literacy development, mathematical concepts, and personal awareness. Research in nature-based programs has shown the cognitive benefits for problem-solving and decision making, as well as stronger reasoning and observational skills, the healthy development of the body and the social-emotional advantages for calming and balancing the hurried aspects of today’s life.

ACADEMICS

Cityside Starting in fall 2019, The Wheeler School will offer to 8th-grade students, its new Cityside program—a year-long interdisciplinary experience in civic engagement embedded in the City of Providence. The new program leverages Providence’s 25 neighborhoods, working with various NGOs, non-profit organizations, community groups, and branches of government to provide a rich curriculum for project-based learning, inquiry, and research. The WaterFire Arts Center in Providence will be “home base” for the new Wheeler Cityside Studio Classroom. Three essential questions form the academic foundation for the new program which grew from the current Middle School 8th-grade history curriculum. Students will be able to answer these questions upon completion of their year in Cityside:

New Godley Turf Field Is First Of Its Kind In New England Wheeler’s new natural turf field, the first of its kind in New England, has been named Godley Field in honor of the family of donors Drs. Frederick Godley and Dr. Kathleen CarneyGodley. The Godleys joined Head of School Allison Gaines Pell at a ribbon-cutting and naming event during Reunion Weekend 2018. Allison Gaines Pell thanked the Godleys on behalf of the students and Wheeler community present and future while Rick Godley thanked former Head Dan Miller who envisioned the field. “We found this sports field a great extension of the classroom,” said Godley, “…with lessons to learn, a chance to take on responsibility and forge friendships. We are happy to support Wheeler as it strengthens its athletic program with this facility.” The new field, composed of “safeshell” infill material made from walnut shells is the only one of its kind in New England. The field’s debut game on September 7 was a 4-0 win by the defending RI State Champion Field Hockey team, the Wheeler Warriors, against Cumberland High School. The new field, located off Walker Street at The Wheeler Farm, was created with infill material provided by USGreentech. According to the company, “safeshell” fields use 100% USA-grown walnut shells with residual allergens removed.

Benefits include reduced surface heat, firm and fast surfaces for athletics and a natural infill that is durable and won’t float or fly away. A special sublayer to provide protection against concussion is part of the special field. The new Godley Field facility includes lighting, a scoreboard, terraced spectator seating, and parking. The general contractor was Green Acres Landscape and Construction of Lakeville, MA. The turf is a Sprinturf Company product; the infill was provided by GreenTech; the lights are a MUSCO Company product. Wheeler Athletic Director Jon Donahue said about the new facility, “This new turf field illustrates a continued commitment by the School to our athletics program. Having this field, as well as the other fields and facilities at our 120-acre Farm Athletics Complex, enhances the athletic experience for our students who have great pride in our Wheeler Warrior program.” This new artificial turf field offers greater flexibility for practices and games, allowing for optimal conditions throughout the season. The turf field also provides valuable playing experience for student-athletes headed to colleges with similar playing surfaces.

Wheeler Voices is a collection of stories highlighting the fact that everyone has a story: stories that capture the past, present, and future and preserve our collective wisdom and shared experiences.
