WHY YOU SHOULD RETIRE TO MOUNTAIN HOME
FROM EXCELLENT MEDICAL CARE TO BEAUTIFUL SCENERY AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, MOUNTAIN HOME IS NOT JUST A DESTINATION BUT A PLACE TO CALL HOME. Whether you’re an angler, boater, bicyclist, hiker, quilter or volunteer, Mountain Home, Arkansas, offers a range of opportunities for residents. Dani Pugsley, the President and CEO of the Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce, moved to town from Spring Hill, Tennessee, in 2010. Her grandparents retired here, and Dani followed. “The White River had always brought my grandfather and uncles here to fish, and when the time came to retire, Mountain Home provided my grandfather

with the opportunity to golf and fish yearround,” she said. “While he spent time outdoors, my grandmother enjoyed her time with the Elkettes, where she loved to play bingo and have lunch with her friends. “I didn’t see myself staying, however, I quickly fell in love with the area. It’s an amazing community that’s perfect for raising a family. Our healthcare and school systems are second to none.” Outdoor activities abound to residents year-round with three rivers, two lakes,
golf courses, parks and many trails. Along with the outdoor recreation, Mountain Home provides many first-class shopping and dining opportunities. The Mountain Home and the Twin Lakes area offer a low cost of living, low crime rate and outdoor recreation, providing a quality of life that you won’t find anywhere else. And the traffic? It’s nearly nonexistent, with a ten-minute trip considered a long commute. “Most importantly, our residents are mindful of those who came before us,” she said. “We actively continue to preserve our community and the natural beauty that surrounds us. “We’re not easy to get to, but once you’re here, you won’t want to leave. “Our greatest strength is our ability to help people

feel like they belong and fit in within our community. Our residents genuinely care about one another. They want to say hello to you. They want to know how your family is doing. There is always someone to lend a hand.” With community support comes many volunteer opportunities. Mountain Home retirees Jim and Jackie Neff met while volunteering at the nonprofit community hospital, Baxter Regional. They each had lost their spouse and met later in life. One day Jackie learned that she would be training a new volunteer. “Along comes Mr. Jim Neff, and we matched,” Jackie says. They’ve been married seven years and continue to volunteer. Through Jim and Jackie’s volunteer work at the hospital, they noticed the staff’s attention to detail with patients. “They have medical facilities that are very personal,” Jim says. “It’s really amazing the number of different specialties that we have and the quality of the doctors that want to come here, practice here and raise their families here. It’s a smaller, safe community rather than a big city.” “The area truly appreciates and has good programs in the works for the volunteers,” Jackie says. Jim agrees, saying, “In my opinion, it’s the volunteer capital of the world.” Retirees can explore indoor and outdoor activities, including quilting, antique shopping, flying, fly fishing and hunting in Mountain Home. Jackie looked for the community aspect when she visited Mountain Home before
moving here, going to grocery stores to get to know the people. “That was important going to a small town in a different state,” Jackie says. “When you’re not from the area sometimes, especially in a small town, you’re always an outsider. We never had that feeling.” Jim agrees, saying, “You see the friendliness of people, the attitudes of folks, a lot of retirees; most of them appreciate what we have and want to make it better to sustain it.” To the Neffs and many others, Mountain Home is a community worth calling home.

— PASSIONATELY ROOTED THE RISKS ON PRESERVATION, THE ARTS AND GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY IN GASSVILLE, ARKANSAS
Mike and Katie King Risk met on a church canoe trip, and are now celebrating 38 years of marriage. Katie is originally from Calico Rock, later moving to Mountain Home. Her husband Mike, a retired dentist, wanted to live in a safe area with outdoor activities, and the racquet club drew him to the area.

“I looked around North Arkansas and the surrounding area, but Mountain Home was a bigger community which offered more amenities,” Mike says. “The great thing about it is, in the 40 years I have lived here, there are even more services and amenities as the town continues to grow. It’s not just a one-shot deal.”
State tennis matches have given the Risks the opportunity to travel and spend quality time with community members. “It’s the friendships,” Katie says. “Our tennis community has become like sisters and brothers.” “I love to play tennis, but the best part is being with my friends I play regularly, you end up being a family,” Mike says. “We get to share and enjoy the people there.” The Risks are also members of the Arkansas Master Naturalists, a statewide service organization, where they focus on volunteerism and protecting natural resources. The couple helps maintain trails, monitors streams and participates in wildlife presentations. “I thought I’d read a lot of books when I retired, that I’d be looking for things to do in my spare time,” Mike says. “It’s been just the opposite. It’s a good place to be.” Mike and Katie take advantage of other volunteer opportunities nearby with Friends of the River, an organization dedicated to monitoring river quality for the North Fork and White rivers. Volunteers help measure erosion and educate the community on water chemistry. Mountain Home also provides opportunities to enjoy and get involved in the arts. The Vada Sheid Community Development Center houses the performing arts center, convention center,

The center hosts a variety of live shows, including Broadway groups, guest lecture and concert series. “If you have a passion, there’s something here that you can do,” Mike says. “That’s the good thing about being in a big retirement community. ” With Katie’s involvement in the church community, she works on crafting projects, donating quilts and more. She shares
MIKE AND KATIE KING RISK RAVE ABOUT RETIRING IN GASSVILLE, INCLUDING PRESERVING NATURAL RESOURCES, EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTING THE CITY’S ARTS AND CULTURE. that the not-for-profit Needs of Many helps local church groups collaborate on community projects with initiatives such as “Take a Fan to Church” and “Warm Someone’s Heart.” “This is for the homeless. We collect blankets, throws, little heaters and sleeping bags to donate to the Ozark Center of Hope,” Katie says. “It’s wonderful.” If there’s an activity that you’re interested in that’s not offered or a topic you want to learn more about, request it at the Norma Wood Library at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home. “All you have to do is ask ASUMH, or ask the library to create a class,” Katie says. “Everybody in Mountain Home is so reachable.” Retirees can also volunteer at the state fair greeting guests and collecting ticket
stubs along with other outdoor activities. “We would walk around just to see the people,” Mike says. “It's really fun. The fair board does a first-class job.” “We both like being together. Plus, if they get one of us to volunteer, then they get two,” Katie jokes. With a wealth of opportunities for retirees, the Risks recommend taking a moment to think about what direction you want to follow. “We’re running out of time, so we need to decide, what do we really want to do? Reach out to friends, neighbors, the Chamber of Commerce, people who can connect you with like-minded groups that you feel like you’re called to,” Mike says. “Whether it’s church, nature or social services, you can find what you want right here in Mountain Home.” EnjoyMountainHome.com |

— MEET THE WILFORDS
DIVING, DINING AND FLYING IN COTTER, ARKANSAS
Boone and Sabrina Wilford moved around quite a bit before cementing their homelife in Cotter. They lived in Northwest Arkansas for a while, then moved to Missouri, headed out to North Carolina, back to Missouri and eventually returning to Arkansas. The couple visited the area regularly in 2011, noting how they enjoyed the hills, valleys, multiuse trails, fitness centers and proximity to a landing strip for their plane. “Moving to this particular spot was perfect because it’s a private airport community,” Boone says. “It’s very active,

and pretty much everyone here has their own aircraft and hangar and a nice, paved runway. It was a draw for us, and it’s right beside the river.” Boone’s love of flying began at a young age with his dad. “The airport manager took us up flying when I was 7 years old,” Boone says. “That fueled the fascination. From that point I never gave it up. Now, we’re very close to a lot of flying strips.” The nearby vet clinic was another selling point in retiring to Cotter. They have two Australian shepherds they take
on many of their trail walks. They’ve noticed the communal kindness in exploring different parts of the town. “People say ‘hi,’ they say, ‘good morning.’ They smile at each other as they walk by,” Sabrina says. Boone and Sabrina started building their third house just over a year ago, including a personal hangar for their backcountry plane. Outside of flying, there are many other outdoor activities in the area, such as hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing and camping. The local entertainment provides memorable experiences with summer concert series and first-class dining right on the white river. “There’s a lot of little hidden treasures,” Sabrina says. “We went to dinner at Gaston’s White River Resort, and just getting there was a little bit of an adventure. It’s a very special place to eat.”

Diving serves as another lifelong interest for the couple. Sabrina says she’s always wanted to dive and finally had an opportunity to do so, while Boone has been diving since he was 14. “There are several spots that are good for diving,” Boone says. “They’ve done quite a few things to make local underwater spots accessible for people to see — from old, abandoned equipment from the construction of the dams to
boats and things of that sort.” The two met when Boone worked as a scuba diving teacher, and Sabrina attended his class as a student. Outside the state, their favorite place to dive is in Bonaire in the Caribbean. “There are people who come from all over the Midwest to Arkansas to dive because the water is so clear,” Sabrina says. The Wilfords encourage guests to book a tour guide and fly fish to get to know
the area. They spent half a day with a guide before moving here, learning about the river and getting started with fly fishing. “My favorite part is the interaction with the people,” Boone says. “We were looking for an area where we could be part of the community and be involved. The folks here have been incredibly friendly, helpful and encouraging. You really feel a sense of inclusion here that is pretty unique.”

RIVERS
— ROLLIN’ ON THE RIVER WORLD - CLASS FISHING HOLES AWAITING YOUR NEXT CAST Arkansas is a land of many natural amenities, creating an outdoor culture second to none. This starts with our majestic rivers, and nowhere in the state will you find a better collection of these clear, cool waterways than right here in and around Mountain Home. The Buffalo River isn’t the biggest or mightiest of Arkansas’s many waterways, but it is arguably the most significant. The first National River in the United States (so designated in 1972), it remains one of the few rivers in the country to be undammed, flowing freely through the Ozarks for 150 miles exactly as it has for millennia. Surrounded by the staggering beauty of soaring cliffs and forest, it’s a slice of paradise enjoyed by 800,000 visitors per year.

Locals will float the upper river via kayak or canoe during high-water periods of the year, typically March through June, although that season can extend into July some years depending on weather and rainfall. Smallmouth bass fishing is king on the upper Buffalo River wilderness, with more spotted bass and largemouth in the mix in the lower stretches. Hiking and camping here are also great, providing tons of selfie-worthy scenery. It’s often said that good things come in small packages, and Arkansas’s North Fork River bears this out. Meandering for just five miles between Lake Norfork Dam and the White River, this waterway packs in a lot of outdoor beauty and some of the best fishing in the entire state. Trout fishing is the headliner on the North Fork, thanks to regular water releases from the dam that keep the water between 47 and 58 degrees. This creates the ideal fish habitat and brings anglers from all over the world to Arkansas to test their skill against the wily brook, brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout, all of which can be found here. At low water, wade fishing is popular while float fishing is recommended when the water is high. Any one of the guide shops in the area can advise the first-timer on river conditions as well as special catch-and-release guidelines. The granddaddy waterway in this part of the state is the White River — a 720-mile behemoth that flows north to south from the Ozarks to the Arkansas Delta. In the northern reaches, the river starts rapid and wild, especially during the spring, then settles down during the rest of the year. The immense size and power of the river led to multiple dams through the years, and these not only control flow, but they have created outstanding recreational opportunities. Canoeing/kayaking, camping and hiking opportunities abound along the White River, as does fishing for catfish, bass, walleye and sunfish. The trout fishing here is world class, particularly near Bull Shoals Dam. The dam sits right inside the Bull Shoals-White River State Park; check out the visitor center for a good primer on all of the region’s recreation and wildlife. Or, visit one of the many resorts here for a relaxing weekend.

LAKES
— LAKE LIFE A PEACEFUL EASY FEELING 365 DAYS A YEAR Mountain Home’s area lakes provide beauty and relaxation any time of year. These shimmering locales allow you to unwind and de-stress with gorgeous views and unlimited recreation. Mountain Home isn’t just a destination or a journey, but a place to call home — your oasis is waiting! If Bull Shoals Lake had a motto, it might very well be, “If you’re going to go, GO BIG.” The largest lake in Arkansas, Bull Shoals offers a whopping 1,000 miles of shoreline and 74 square miles of surface. Clean and beautiful, this pristine attraction welcomes thousands upon thousands of visitors every year. Watersports abound on Bull Shoals, and people wakeboarding, tubing and water skiing are familiar sights here. Boating is a breeze thanks to low traffic and wide channels; with such a large surface area, you’ll never feel crowded or fail to find your own secluded cove to drop anchor and relax as well. Set up camp, or visit one of the

many resorts near the lake for a weekend the whole family will enjoy. If it can happen on the water, it’s happening at Bull Shoals Lake, a glittering sapphire gem in the emerald Ozark Mountains. Offering 550 miles of shoreline and covering 22,000 acres, crystal-clean Lake Norfork offers a little something for everyone. Take to the water for boating, water skiing and swimming. Don’t have a watercraft? Visit one of the commercial docks on the lake to rent one. The fishing here is as good as you’ll find in the region, especially for bass, crappie and walleye. Diving is another popular pastime on the lake; explore underwater treasures including a sunken bus, airplane, bulldozer and even the former Henderson Bridge. Enjoy a picnic in one of the 19 developed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks, or make it a longer stay with a rented cabin that provides your own spot for relaxation with friends and family as you explore the bluffs and rolling hills in between legendary Ozark sunsets. Whatever stirs your soul, you’ll find your own personal paradise on Lake Norfork.
