DISCOVER OUR HIDDEN TREASURES

FROM

OUTDOOR

ADVENTURES TO GOURMET DELIGHTS AND QUAINT BOUTIQUES, MOUNTAIN HOME IS A TRAVELER'S PARADISE.

Looking for a relaxing getaway for the family vacation, long weekend with the girls or just the two of you? Professional travel writers and influencers agree that Mountain Home provides myriad opportunities to refresh and relax no matter what you fancy on holiday.

“Mountain Home is truly one of those hidden gems,” said Sara Heer, blogger and influencer who with her husband Paul forms Arkie Travels, a travel website focused on destinations within the Natural State. “When we visited for the first time, we were just blown away by all of the amazing things there were to do for outdoor recreation, for families and the entertainment district for adult fun. There are so many options here.”

Heer said the city’s reputation for natural beauty is well-deserved, and any vacation here should include outdoor activities. Fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking and water sports exist in abundance and are easily accessed throughout the area.

“We were just there recently on a private guided fishing trip on the White River where we caught several rainbow trout. Just being out in that area, there’s just nothing like it.”

To fuel the outdoor adventures, Heer has compiled a list of dining options that must be experienced. For lunch or dinner, Heer raved about the following spots.

2024 | ENJOYMOUNTAINHOME.COM | 7
(Clockwise from top left) Fishing on the White River, Blue Heron Campground, Cove Coffee, and Rapp's Barren Brewing Company.

Rapp’s Barren Brewing Company (601 S. Baker St.): “Rapp’s Barren is going to be at the top of our list every single time. Incredible brews, we love the flights that they offer and the seasonal brews that they do. The last time we were there, I had the poke nachos that were amazing. The chocolate chip cookies are the bomb, and they make them fresh right there. They also serve an amazing brunch.”

Rio Burrito (609 S. Baker St.):

“I got this burrito bowl last time I was there with their Snoop Sauce that is so tasty. No matter what you order, be sure to request that sauce; I don’t know what’s in it, but it’s pink, creamy and just packs a lot of awesome flavor.”

sories and Nature’s Way (18 E, 7th St.), longtime natural health and wellness center, as two favorites.

“I’d also recommend Cove Coffee (714 S. Baker St.) to start your day or if you need a pick-me-up throughout the day. The coffee shop has this great vibe to it. The owner has pulled all kinds of eclectic pieces from the ’60s and ’70s, so it’s super vintage in there and we definitely love that.”

Those who like their vacations to include some retail therapy will be delighted by Mountain Home’s eclectic shops and local businesses offering unique, one-of-a-kind items. Heer recommends Nomad Clothing (2 E. 7th St.) for trendy women’s clothing, shoes and acces-

For an exceptional evening in Mountain Home, Sara Heer recommends the downtown entertainment district, highlighting the allure of Stories Whiskey Bar at 10 E. 7th St. “It’s a secret speakeasy where you have to know the code to get in the door. There’s a cigar bar downstairs, and upstairs there’s any kind of whiskey you can think of. They also do dramatic mixed drinks, and it’s a really wonderful experience — once you figure out the password.”

Whatever your tastes call for on your next vacation, Mountain Home definitely fits the bill.

CHOOSING HOME

CALIFORNIA TRANSPLANTS ENJOY SLOWER PACE, BETTER CONNECTIONS

In 2011, Chris and Alyssa Gordon had reached a crossroads. Living in Southern California, they’d grown increasingly dissatisfied with the cost and environment of the area for their young family and began to seriously contemplate relocating.

The couple pondered Arkansas after Alyssa’s grandmother, who had moved to the state in 1995, was followed by a steady stream of other relatives. Finally, they took the leap and haven’t looked back since.

“I think what immediately ap-

pealed to me about moving to Arkansas was having family nearby,” Alyssa said. “It did take a while to get used to the cultural changes, but moving to Mountain Home gave us the opportunity to just delve into the community, make friends and be more involved and that helped us feel welcome.”

Both Alyssa and Chris found professional opportunities: she with Arkansas Virtual Academy and he as a counselor in private practice and as co-owner of Rapp’s Barren

Brewery. They’ve balanced their work lives with numerous leisure pursuits as well as keeping up with the kids’ academic and extracurricular activities.

“When I think about when we first arrived here, the thing that immediately comes to mind is the availability of resources,” Chris said. “Transitioning to any new community takes some work, and I felt like Mountain Home helped provide the ability to find our place. There’s a lot to do around here if you dig in

and look for it, and the more time we spent here, the more avenues we found to put our time and interest into the community.”

One of the activities that jumped off the page was the local volunteer orchestra, which Alyssa quickly joined.

“Our orchestra is an all-volunteer group of musicians that gave me a place to play, which I really needed,” she said. “That quickly became my niche not only as a musician but as a way to get involved and connect with others, which I still do today as a member of the board.”

As far as the kids are concerned, both Chris and Alyssa say they have had no difficulty finding positive programming to suit their interests, even as they’ve grown from elementary students to now teenagers.

“When the kids were younger, they participated in youth center activities, where they do a lot of things that help children and families feel connected,” Alyssa said. “The city library has also been a huge resource; it’s amazing the programming they have for younger kids and teens alike. We’re so thankful to have that in our community.”

Chris also praised the city’s leadership for creating a thriving business community that not only encourages and supports entrepreneurs but helps provide the kind of

environment where people want to gather. He said the recent establishment of Mountain Home’s entertainment district is a prime example.

“What the entertainment district has quickly grown and morphed into is a place where you can hit a variety of things,” he said. “People can park, walk and shop; they can get food there, they can get coffee or the drinks they want, there’s music down there. There are all these things that give people so many options, not just as business owners, but as community members.

“As a business owner, it has been nice to have the support of the area. Rapp’s Barren (Brewing Company) wouldn’t be possible without the community. They have supported us and helped the brewery grow into something we never could have dreamed of. That’s all because of the people who came behind us and supported it. Providing a safe and welcoming environment has helped drive that.”

Perhaps the most important thing the couple enjoys here is the smalltown spirit that provides the foundation for everything in Mountain Home. From teachers who invest extra time to help students to citizens who devote countless hours and resources to various nonprofits, churches and special events, the all-for-one cohesiveness is on display everywhere you look.

“There’s just that friendly wonderful small-town feeling to Moun-

tain Home,” Alyssa said. “When my daughter and I walk around downtown at Christmastime, for instance, and it’s all lit up and decorated; it’s really a special place to be. Wherever we are, we always run into someone that we know.

“I love that about a small community. Mountain Home is the kind of place you can get connected to people in different ways. Seeing them around town and talking with them is just very heartwarming. It truly makes you feel at home.”

A TOUR OF OUR CITY PARKS

Mountain Home’s love for the great outdoors is vividly expressed in its parks. Each park, with its unique charm, stitches the fabric of community life, offering a blend of recreational activities and natural beauty.

Cooper Park stands as a beacon for community sports, hosting the likes of the Hurricane Swim Team and American Legion Baseball. Its fields are not just patches of grass, but stages where local talent and community spirit flourish.

But it’s not just about sports. Hickory Park, dating back to 1954, is steeped in history and now bursts with modern vitality. The park’s newly completed inclusive playground is a testament to Mountain Home’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, allowing children of all abilities to play side by

side. The park also becomes a cultural hub during the Summer Concert Series, where music fills the air and brings together people from all walks of life.

Elsewhere, Clysta Willett Park and Keller Park offer serene green spaces, perfect for a family picnic or a quiet afternoon stroll. Dr. Ray Stahl Soccer Complex is a haven for soccer enthusiasts, echoing with the sounds of cheering crowds and competitive spirit.

Perhaps most noteworthy is McCabe Park, a generous gift to the city in 2015. This park is a fusion of nature and community, featuring the North Arkansas Fly Fishers pavilion and stocked fishing ponds. The ongoing development of a new trail system and the planned Recreation and Aquatic facility speak volumes of the city’s vision for

a community-centric outdoor lifestyle.

In Mountain Home, parks are more than just playgrounds and green spaces; they are the lifeblood of the community, fostering connections, nurturing talents, and celebrating the town’s rich natural heritage.

AN ENDURING LOVE AFFAIR WITH MOUNTAIN HOME

When the time came for Ed and Lucretia Coulter to retire from their professional lives and settle into retirement, they had options to go anywhere in the world to do it. Yet despite having seen some of the most beautiful places on earth, the couple never even considered heading anywhere else.

“I will tell you, I doubt if anyone in Mountain Home travels more than we do,” Ed said. “In the last six weeks alone, we’ve been out of the country twice. But although we love to travel extensively, the best part of traveling is coming home. We’re happy to head back to Mountain Home, Arkansas.

“First and foremost, there’s a natural beauty here in the lakes, the rivers and the mountains that is unequaled. There’s also a beauty of spirit in the people who live here that’s hard to find anywhere else. We just have a love affair with our community.”

Throughout his long career in education, Ed has repeatedly answered Mountain Home’s siren song. A graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, he met and married the late Fran Dryer, a member of one of Mountain Home’s prominent families. In 1967, he was asked to establish the city’s first

junior high school, after which he left to return to OBU.

Twenty-five years later, he was again reeled in this time to establish Arkansas State University-Mountain Home and serve as its chancellor until 2012. When Lucretia married Ed in 2007, she quickly became as taken with the community as he was.

“From my perspective, it offers us everything that we want and that we like,” she said. “All the amenities are here — you can go hiking, we’ve got the university that brings all of their programs here, we have a fantastic public library and we have an enthusiasm in this community that’s really contagious and provides an energy of its own.

“Ed and I are not the only ones who feel that way; there are a lot of people buying into that as Mountain Home continues to go forward.”

Ed said in addition to the recreational activities and natural beauty the area provides, Mountain Home is equally regarded for its critical services. The schools are excellent for families, he said, and the health care system is second

THE WILFORD’S

JOURNEY

Couple finds Community and Adventure in Cotter

Boone and Sabrina Wilford have led a nomadic life before settling in Cotter, Arkansas. Their journey included stays in Northwest Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and back to Arkansas. They were drawn to Cotter in 2011, captivated by its hills, valleys, trails, fitness centers, and particularly its private airport community. “It’s very active, and pretty much everyone here has their own aircraft and hangar,” Boone explains. His passion for flying sparked at age 7, influenced by his father and an airport manager.

The Wilfords, proud owners of two Australian shepherds, appreciate the local vet clinic and the area’s communal kindness. Cotter offers numerous outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, and fly fishing.

Local entertainment includes summer concerts and dining experiences at places like Gaston’s White River Resort. Diving, another of the couple’s interests, is wellaccommodated in the area.

The Wilfords recommend fly fishing with a guide for newcomers. Boone cherishes the community interaction in Cotter, saying, “You really feel a sense of inclusion here that is pretty unique.”

to none. What’s more, both of these institutions have benefited greatly from the giving spirit and generosity of the residents, things he saw firsthand when getting ASU-Mountain Home off the ground.

“I came to Mountain Home at a time that was magical because once the community said, ‘We want to build a university,’ the support just came flooding in,” he said. “I’ll never truly understand how we did what we did because, at the same time, we were in the middle of building the university, the hospital was also in expansion mode.

“I truly believe this is one of the most giving communities because today the university is a centerpiece of Mountain Home and the hospital is first class. That’s very important for retirees especially; there are a lot of pretty places in the world, but you want to retire someplace where you know you can get care if you need it.”

Residents aren’t only generous with their dollars but with their time as evidenced by the many volunteer opportunities, community festivals and events that crowd the calendar. Lucretia said this also is appealing to retirees today — seniors who aren’t content to just sit on the porch but want to be engaged in events and activities in a community setting that continues to thrive.

“There are always a lot of things going on as far as festivals and community events, and this provides a lot of opportunities for people to volunteer and get involved,” Lucretia said.

“Mountain Home is really expanding under the leadership of the chamber of commerce, with all of these wonderful news things on the city square that attract a lot of people.

“For me, the overall environment of Mountain Home is a Norman Rockwell experience, and you cannot find that just anywhere. This is a community that still offers that feeling with its welcoming environment and in the pride of the people. People sometimes ask us why we stayed in Mountain Home to which I like to say, ‘Why would we ever leave? Why would you want to live anywhere else?’”
