In case you missed the good news,

Mount St. Mary Academy was voted Best Private School in Arkansas Times’ “Best of Arkansas 2022” this summer. As of this writing, we are also a Top 5 finalist for Best Private High School in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s “Best of the Best” competition. Recognition like this within our community helps affirm what we’ve believed all along: Mount truly is “the best school we know of!”

As the state’s oldest school, it may seem like a lot has changed at Mount St. Mary Academy during its nearly 172-year-old history. But as I walk the halls and talk with our young women; as I stop in classrooms and see teachers working alongside their students; as I pass the chapel during Mass and witness personal relationships with God growing stronger; as I watch our student-athletes give their all during practice and competition; and as I receive thanks from local nonprofits where our students are completing service hours, I am comforted to know the Mount we love today continues with the same purpose and vibrancy that has been appreciated and celebrated over the course of many, many years.

Centered in Catholic tradition, and with a rich history of Mercy education dating

back to 1851, Mount St. Mary Academy has shaped, and continues to shape, so many lives. You will see evidence of this as you read the stories in our latest issue of The Messenger and discover the ways Mount has had a positive impact on the students, alumnae, and parents who are featured.

Mount St. Mary Academy has not only produced an impressively accomplished crop of distinguished women, we have also received an abundance of community support that allows us to keep our mission going strong. Each and every individual or organization named in this issue’s annual report deserves special recognition for the important role they play in our success.

Thank you for being a part of the Mount St. Mary Academy community we hold so dear. I am grateful for your steadfast faith in our students, faculty, and staff, as well as in myself. It is a great privilege to lead “the best school we know of,” and I am honored to continue writing Mount’s story with you. God has immensely blessed us, and I know there are still many great chapters to come!

Bow! Bow!Take a

Nguyen came up through the parochial system at Little Rock’s Christ the King School, while Small had a multifaceted education, attending private, public and homeschool. Small is the first in her family to be a Belle, while Nguyen makes three generations of her family in houndstooth.

But in the thing that matters most to them — theatre — the young women share a common DNA and speak from one heart. Both feel most at home on stage, both have already broken in with community and professional productions locally and beyond, and both chomp at the bit to see how far this passion can take them.

“I’m not sure exactly when there was a switch from theatre being something I did into what I wanted to do professionally,” Small said. “I think the more I did theatre, the more I did less of other things. And the more I did it, the more I learned I could go to college for it, that it could be a career choice. I think I’ve always known I wanted to do something in the entertainment field, but I don’t really have a defining moment when I decided, ‘I want to do this.’”

“Live theatre has always been my cup of tea; it’s where I find myself and my home, my place,” Nguyen said. “The dream has always been Broadway or any other kind of professional theatre where I can do what I love as a career. That’s the dream, no matter where exactly that puts me.”

Both artists came to the stage early — Small at age 9, Nguyen at age 5 — and have steadily built up their actor credits

ever since. Small’s resume includes roles in Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Benton Royal Theatre and A Christmas Story at Arkansas Repertory Theatre (The Rep) as well as the television show The Mels last year.

If it surprises you that someone who’s been homeschooled would have access to this many artistic opportunities, it’s certainly not something Small hasn’t heard before.

“It’s kind of an interesting stereotype. People think that homeschoolers never leave their house,” she said. “Actually, I think being homeschooled allows you to be a little bit more of a kid and be able to do more things. I started in a homeschool theatre program called Cast and Crew when I was about 9, and since I was homeschooled, I was able to do a lot more shows because I had more time to work on my script and go to rehearsals. My schedule was a lot more flexible.”

Nguyen has appeared in Willy Wonka Jr. at The Rep and community theatre productions of The Sound of Music, Newsies and the lead in The Wizard of Oz. She was also accepted to actress Kristin Chenoweth’s Broadway Bootcamp this summer, an ultra-competitive camp she’s still pinching herself over.

“It was an incredible, dare I say, lifechanging experience,” she said. “There were more than 800 auditions from kids all over the world for this, and I was the only student from Arkansas. There were kids from Canada and Hawaii and London;

some of these kids have already been in major things. One of my friends is an actor in Cobra Kai, the Netflix series. These people are crazy talented, from the interns to my fellow students and the teachers, to the people who run the production.”

Both women said the Mount environ ment not only gives them opportunities to practice and perform their craft but also a means for staying grounded and feeling included.

“I also run track, and I think doing that and being a student-athlete at Mount has helped me a lot,” Small said. “I love doing theatre, but being able to do track makes me feel like I’m filling out my high school experience. Theatre can be stressful, so running’s a nice relief, a nice way to breathe and hang out with my friends. I feel like I’m actually ‘doing’ high school.

“Academically, I enjoy the teachers and how much they care about our education

and how much work they put in to make sure everyone’s thriving in their classes. I’m not a huge school person, but I have some of the best history and math and science teachers ever. They make me want to learn.”

“I have definitely grown a lot as a person going to Mount,” Nguyen said. “It was different for me at first to be in a school with so many options for friends. Last year, I really got the chance to find my group of people who viewed life the same

way I did. I found my tribe, people I could go through so many things with.

“Being around them, I really got a chance to step outside of everything I had previously known and the boxes I had been in at my previous school. I found out a little bit more about who I am and what I believe and who I want to be.”

MSM ALUMNA SERVES IN GLOBAL HOTSPOTS

LineFireIN THE OF

IF YOU WERE TO WRITE AN EDGE-OFYOUR-SEAT MILITARY THRILLER,

1997 MOUNT ST. MARY ALUMNA AND WEST POINT GRADUATE STAR HY WOULD MAKE THE IDEAL CENTRAL CHARACTER. Following five years of service in the U.S. Army, she turned down the FBI to land with the Diplomatic Security Service, the federal law enforcement arm of the Department of State.

Over 13 years with the agency, the job has taken her to some of the most hostile places on earth. But to hear her talk about

her important and dangerous work — at least the parts she’s at liberty to discuss — you’d think it was just another 9-to-5.

“Sometimes the job requires us to be in suits, and sometimes the job requires us to be wearing heavy body armor and carrying weapons, depending on where we are,” she said with a shrug.

Diplomatic Security Services serves three primary functions: investigation of passport and visa fraud; personal protection for the U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

and other visiting foreign dignities; and as regional security officers.

“Regional security officers work overseas,” Hy said. “The regional security officers manage the security programs at the embassy, everything from the physical security of the embassy, the physical security of the residences of the diplomats and anything to do with access to the embassy.

“Depending on the assignment you get, it could be anywhere from one to three years. One year being the hotspots — Iraq, Afghanistan — or it can be two years in places that may be underdeveloped, such as in Africa. And then for the nicer spots, usually locations like London, it’ll be for three years.

“We also do a lot of temporary assignments, like when the recent RussiaUkraine conflict began, where agents go in for 30 days. Or, for events such as the Olympics or the World Cup, where you may be gone 30 days, 45 days, two weeks.”

Regardless of where they go or how long they stay, agents are generally at or near a milestone of history. Hy has had a knack of finding herself in such locales during her career, starting with her very first U.S. Army deployment with military police at Guantanamo Bay, right after 9/11, where she worked security for the interrogation facility there.

Once with the agency, her assignments included two years each in Mexico City and Sarajevo. She also served in Kabul, Afghanistan, expecting a year-long tour

until history again stepped in with the U.S. withdrawal. Hy, the only female federal law enforcement officer on the ground, played an integral role in the evacuation and subsequent humanitarian operations in the country.

“I was part of the security team in charge of the evacuation of the embassy and all the Americans and our local staff,” she said. “After we evacuated the embassy, we went to the airport where I was working with the team doing security for the evacuations of Afghans, U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, special visa holders and other at-risk Afghans.”

Her service earned her the prestigious 2022 Julie Y. Cross Award from the Women in Federal Law Enforcement Foundation, honoring exceptional courage or for an unusual degree of stamina and willingness to go above and beyond. It’s recognition she’s more than a little uncomfortable with.

“To be perfectly honest, I didn’t do anything the rest of my male colleagues didn’t do,” she said. “I don’t know if any of them are bitter about (the award), but I feel like I got a lot of recognition that other people also deserved.”

Given her experience and accomplish ment, you’d think Hy had a military or law enforcement career in mind from an early age. In fact, she didn’t know what she was going to do with her life until she went to a college fair at Catholic High during her junior year at Mount.

“Most people are excited about college experiences and pledging sororities and fraternities, and I knew that wasn’t for me,” she said. “While at the college fair, I took a look at the service academies, primarily West Point. It just kind of clicked.”

As she’s moved through the various stages of her professional journey, Hy’s commitment to public service has only grown stronger, a bond that began forming during her high school years.

“The things I still carry with me from the Mount certainly include morality and integrity,” she said. “When you’re at West Point, the cadet honor code states the cadet will not lie, cheat, steal or tolerate those who do. That was something the Mount always taught, so for me the transition was easy. I already had that discipline.

“Then when you become a federal agent, you’re held to a higher standard because if you act in a manner that doesn’t have integrity, you’re flogged in the press or could be restricted from your job. So, I certainly think integrity is one of the main things the Mount gave me, teaching me how to live a life of honor and impeccable character.”

The only question was how those values would manifest themselves in her life after graduation. She didn’t have to wait long to find out.

“I don’t know where service to others first got instilled in me,” she said. “I was just very aware of the fact that there were others who didn’t have the same opportunities in life as I did. I was given gifts, and I could use them to help others. I can’t say it was a specific act or a specific person that did that; it just seemed like it’s always been something I wanted to do.

“While I was in college (at UA Little Rock), I always had a job and I worked at Youth Home as a counselor. That set me on the path of going into social work. I found a graduate program in Tennessee and worked for an organization that was connected to the juvenile justice system. I worked there for a year while I looked around for social work opportunities.”

After college, Rossi took a job with Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in a role working in the juvenile justice system.

“At that point, it was a court-watching program in juvenile courts all around the state to see what inequities were there,” she said. “It pointed out how often having a county judge as the person responding to these issues, who had little or no training to do it, resulted in inconsistent outcomes from place to place.”

Rossi flourished in this role and would spend the next 25 years working on behalf of Arkansas’ children and youth, the last 15 years as the organization’s director. During that time, she had a hand in substantial reforms that improved how juveniles were fed, cared for, educated and in some cases adjudicated.

“I’m proud of the significant inroads that we made during my time there,”

she said. “The juvenile justice system was declared unconstitutional and a whole new system of juvenile justice was developed. We helped in filing suit against the state on abuses in the adoption and child welfare system, which ultimately found the state had definitely neglected services for those children in most need. That was pretty significant.”

Rossi also played a key role in implementing a breakfast program in the schools, securing funding for the Arkansas Better Chance Program that provided early childhood education throughout Arkansas, and creating the groundbreaking ARKids First program to address health care for children statewide.

“Starting ARKids First was the capstone of my career, and I think it’s what most people know me for,” she said. “This was health insurance not just for the poorest of the poor, but for children of the working poor, and it opened up a tremendous opportunity for kids being able to access health care in the state.”

Now retired, Rossi was recognized for her contributions with multiple awards, including the Josetta Wilkins

THERE WAS NEVER ANY QUESTION ABOUT WHERE AMY ROSSI ’71 WOULD ATTEND HIGH SCHOOL. Having been raised at St. Patrick Church and School in North Little Rock, it was inevitable that she would attend Mount St. Mary Academy, immersed in Mercy values.

Courage Award from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission (1999); the NCCJ National Humanitarian Award (2000); the 21st Century Families Award from the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service (2001) ; and the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement’s Dr. Tom Bruce Arkansas Health Impact Award (2019). She is also a member of the latest class inducted into the Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame.

Looking back over her decorated career, she’s quick to give credit to her early education and faith formation as well as the development opportunities afforded her during her time at Mount St. Mary.

“The 12 years of Catholic education I received really grounded me in my faith, and certainly that was reinforced in my high school years,” she said. “The women who were there who mentored me and thought highly of me all were women of faith. That, I think, has been a foundation for the things that I wanted to do with my life. I don’t know how else to ground it other than the Mount.

“Being involved in leadership activities, such as being a class representative sophomore year and junior year and student body president my senior year, was a tremendous experience because of all the responsibilities that it gave me. It really encouraged me as I moved forward in life.”

Above all else, Rossi said, she’s proud of the fact that her life’s work continues to help Arkansas’ children embrace brighter futures.

“I liked building coalitions; I liked putting people together and thinking through creative solutions. That gives me energy,” she said. “I always wanted to make a good living, but it was never about money. It was always about a cause or something that gave me passion and commitment toward getting something done.”

This was health insurance ... for children of the working poor, and it opened up a tremendous opportunity for kids being able to access health care in the state. ”

EDUCATION PROS PASS MSM VALUES TO OTHERS

AMOUNT

ST. MARY EDUCATION IS SOMETHING ALUMNAE CARRY INTO ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE. For education professionals, it also provides a firm foundation for creating engaging classrooms and compassionate, supportive school environments.

“Being a principal requires you to be pastoral in some ways,” said Principal Kristy Hood Dunn ’00, who graduated from St. Theresa School in Little Rock and has spent her entire career there. “I’m very grateful for the environment we had at Mount St. Mary to help develop that in me.”

Dunn said she knew from elementary school she was going to be a teacher, but it was during her Mount years she began to balance the science of teaching through her studies with the art of teaching experienced in the community.

“I look back to when I went to Fair Park Elementary for my junior service learning,” she said. “That experience laid a solid foundation of here’s what it’s like to work with kids, here’s what it’s like to just be kind and to show the light of Christ, no matter what situation you’re in. I know that’s the bedrock of my formation as an educator.”

For others, the call of the classroom came later. Watching her mother, longtime North Little Rock and MSM teacher Kathy Smith, Shana Smith Nolen ’92 came away knowing one thing for certain: She never wanted to be a teacher. But years later, after a successful career in the corporate world, she felt drawn to the vocation at The Anthony School where her children attended.

“I was as involved as I could be as a parent, and after a time, I felt a pull to this place,” she said. “I subbed part time, then full time, then I got hired for that spot which was early childhood art and technology.”

Eventually, Nolen would take on administrative roles and is now the head of school of the award-

winning private school. Today, she works to create the same kind of community she experienced at the Mount.

“That environment was so conducive to learning,” she said. “I had very good relationships with all my teachers. They were there to impact you, but it wasn’t just academics. It was also the accepting environment they created. I’m not from a Catholic family, for instance, but I never once felt different.

“I want the same for my students and staff here. I’m not packaging something and handing it to you; roll up your sleeves, and let’s dig in together.”

Theresa Goshen Hall ’78 would’ve been happy in the classroom forever had she not been pushed by mentors along the way. She said the soft skills developed during her Mount experience were critical to her moving into the front office at the former St. Edward School in Little Rock, then to the Diocese of Little Rock where she is now Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

“The hardest part of that process is going from being more of a friend to the teachers I worked with to being their supervisor. That was a difficult transition for me,” she said. “The Mount helped me build more confidence in myself and my understanding of other people. Those things really stand out among things I gained from the Mount.”

In her current role, Hall has the opportunity to help other principals create supportive, dynamic learning environments throughout the state’s parochial school system. And every encounter in some way has a little Mount St. Mary ring to it.

“When I was a principal, the part of the job I really enjoyed was mentoring new teachers,” she said. “As superintendent, I am there for my principals. I’ve sat in their seats, and I’m aware of the challenges they face. We have to keep building enrollment, but we also have to stay true to what our mission is. There are a lot more challenges now to maintain that balance.”

All schools have experienced evolution, from embracing new technology to addressing social issues. As Elise Hampton ’09 noted, the virtues of a Mount education have proven timeless in meeting the challenges of the modern classroom.

“When I first got to Mount, I was mad at my parents,” said Hampton, principal of North Little Rock Middle School. “Growing up in Conway, I’d always been among a few Black students in school, and now they’d brought me someplace where it decreased that number even further. But as I started getting to know the people there, I discovered something Mount does have is a social justice mission. They truly encouraged social justice leadership in us.

“I tell students today that while Mount is not as diverse as the public schools, you can still make connections. I learned that we don’t have to have the same experiences or be the same race to find commonalities we can connect on to push Mount forward.”

As Hampton continues to preach inclusivity and acceptance in her school, she does so knowing she’s the latest in a long and proud tradition.

“For me, Mount really opened doors because it developed leadership skills in me that I use every day,” she said. “I wouldn’t be a principal today if it weren’t for Mount St. Mary, and I stand by that.”

“ Being a principal requires you to be pastoral in some ways. I’m very grateful for the environment we had at Mount St. Mary to help develop that in me. ”

TheHOMECOMING

Anne Ruth Rankin Macaluso ‘49 is not one of those people. In her memory, the dignified iron and its curving top piece frame a living snapshot of the campus beyond, riotous in springtime, ablaze in fall. To her, the gates always opened to something wondrous and represent what’s best of the Mount past, present and future.

“My mother and daddy took me out to the Mount so I could see what it was like,” said Macaluso. “My parents didn’t know how to get into the grounds, so they stopped on Kavanaugh Boulevard by the ornamental front gate. I went in that ornamental front gate with my mother; we went up the sidewalk, around a round flower bed, up

these tall, steep steps and rang a doorbell. That was my first time there.”

It’s not hyperbole to call the Mount Macaluso’s second home. The only child of Carl and Ruth Rankin, she arrived in 1937 at age 6 as a boarder, and for nine of her 12 years there she lived in the campus dormitory during the school

LIKE MANY LONGTIME LANDMARKS, THE STATELY IRON GATES OF MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY DON’T INSPIRE A PAUSE FROM MANY PASSERSBY ANYMORE. Most motorists or neighborhood runners hardly even glance up, let alone ponder the history of the gates and the campus they announce.

week. Following graduation in 1949, she earned a nursing degree and soon made her way to New Orleans where she’d marry a local Italian boy, work and raise a family of her own.

She’d make periodic visits back to Little Rock, and whenever she did, the trip included a stop at the Mount to look up former teachers and breathe in the Mercy air. As time and loved ones passed, the visits to her alma mater became, in the truest sense, visits home.

“I started at the Mount in the depths of the Depression in 1937,” she said. “My mother was a nurse, and she worked long hours when my daddy had lost his job. When he went back to work, she still worked, and they did not want me to be a latchkey child.

“My mother did not want me to go to public school, but we were not Catholic, and she had to fight my grandmother for me to go to the Mount. My parents had a difficult time, they really did. I thanked them all the time for the education they gave me. I don’t know how I would have turned out if I hadn’t gone to the Mount. I really don’t.”

Last year, as a 90th birthday present, her son gifted her a homecoming to her alma mater, her first visit back in more than a decade. The gates still stood, as did the grotto and the gym; everything else from her era was a shadow of memory.

Every day followed the same regimented agenda, especially for boarders. From meals to making one’s bed (“I learned hospital corners years before nursing school,” she said) to recreation and study to lights out, the world moved with a comforting predictability. It was an innocent time and what minor scandals she endured have mellowed into good stories.

“I was always a reader,” she said. “One day my poor mother is working nights and she’s sleeping during the day. Sister Mary Declan called her and told her she had to come out to the Mount because Anna Ruth was reading a smutty book and she had to come take that book away.

“It was a biography of Anne Boleyn. It wasn’t even a novel! And my poor mama had to get up and get dressed and drive to the other side of town to take that smutty book out of the Mount because I guess it would have contaminated everybody.”

Macaluso laughs heartily at the memory, one of a couple where she smuggled in contraband reading material. The nona genarian spitfire laughs a lot, and it’s kept a youthful chime in her voice, especially talking about her beloved school then and how it’s changed: There are no nuns any more, the elevators work and the student body is more diverse than at any time she was there, which she considers a blessing.

“I was shocked when I went to the Mount last year and the girls could wear any kind of shoes they wanted,” she said. “We always wore blue and white saddle

shoes and white bobby socks you smoothed up your leg as far as they would go so there weren’t any wrinkles in them.”

Yet as removed as her era may at first appear from the present day (down to the trademark houndstooth, which came after her), she still feels a bond with every single student who preceded her, studied next to her or came after her.

“I’m a Mount girl. I’m a 91-year-old Mount girl!” she said. “I’ve got Mount T-shirts. I wear Mount sweatshirts. I’m still teaching, and I wear my Mount T-shirts a lot teaching my class.

“In New Orleans, when people say, ‘Where did you go to school?’ they don’t mean where did you go to college. They mean where did you go to high school. I let them know I’m from the Mount.”

Asked what that little girl still carries in her heart from the early days, her voice softens.

“They taught me a song that says, ‘When I grow too old to dream, I’ll have you to remember,’” she said. “I am, I guess, too old to dream now, but I still remember my days at the Mount.”

“ I’m a Mount girl. I’m a 91-year-old Mount girl! I’m still teaching, and I wear my Mount T-shirts a lot teaching my class.”

THEY ARE THE

CHAMPIONS

The development of the entire person in body, mind and spirit has always been a hallmark of Mount girls. Academic excellence, community service, character and leadership all combine to create young women ready for the challenges of the modern world.

Athletics embody many of these same attributes, promoting physical health, developing time management and teaching how to handle both victory and defeat in a manner consistent with Mercy values.

Lilli Brooks

WRESTLING/ SOFTBALL

Lilli Brooks ’23 is at once a trailblazer and a traditionalist. Not only a standout for the Belles longstanding softball team, Brooks is also breaking new ground as an elite wrestler. It’s a duality of competition that conjoins a deep grit with fearless determination.

“I was raised in a go-big-or-go-home, fight-for-what’s-right household,” she said. “It gave me the attitude that there’s really nothing that can get in your way as long as you put your mind to it.”

Since age 5, Brooks has put her mind to softball. The right-handed switch-hitter has started three years on Mount’s varsity team as an outfielder and at second base. She’s also played on a traveling team, the Troublemakers, based in her hometown of Malvern.

At age 10, she saw a newspaper article about a local high school girl dominating the sport of wrestling at a national level.

“I saw her and I was like, ‘I want to do that,’” she said. “I got into it very quickly; at first I thought I had beginner’s luck, but turns out I took to the sport naturally.”

Since then, Brooks has qualified for national competition four times, placing as high as fifth, and earned All-America status each time. Because Mount doesn’t offer wrestling, she competes through a club team where the competition below the national meet is comprised entirely of boys.

Asked what she favors, Brooks doesn’t hesitate.

“Even though I’m better at wrestling, I like softball better because I enjoy working with a team and I enjoy being a leader in that aspect,” she said. “Wrestling, you’re winning matches on your own; it’s more

of an individual battle. Mount softball, we have a bunch of girls who’ve never played before, and my goal is to take them under my wing and help build a team out of them.”

THE FOLLOWING ATHLETES EMBODY THE BEST OF THESE QUALITIES AS THEY COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF THEIR CHOSEN SPORTS.
“EVEN THOUGH I’M BETTER AT WRESTLING, I LIKE SOFTBALL BETTER BECAUSE I ENJOY WORKING WITH A TEAM.”

Catherine Althoff

For the past two years running, Rhodes College in Memphis finished atop the Southern Athletic Conference in women’s basketball. In both of those championship seasons, the Lynx relied heavily on a secret weapon, Mount alumna Catherine Althoff ’20, coming off the bench.

Althoff, an All-Conference power forward, doesn’t consider being left outside the starting five a slight. Instead, she devotes her energies to making the most of the opportunities she’s given.

“I’ve actually really enjoyed coming off the bench,” she said. “It’s nice to be able to get a look at what the other team’s doing, and I can see what I’m going up against when I go into the game. It’s been great to just sit and watch and mentally prepare myself for what I need to do.”

Althoff came to Rhodes after a twosport career with the Belles during which she led the basketball team to the 6A state tournament. At Rhodes, she averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds last year, playing 24 minutes per game. And while her free-throw percentage remained steady from freshman to sophomore year (76% and 77%, respectively), her three-point shooting improved 15 percentage points to 36% beyond the arc.

She said her teammates and the Rhodes environment helped her adjust to college life – and basketball – quickly.

“I love the small-school aspect of both Mount and Rhodes. That was something that really drew me here,” she said. “After going to Mount and having those really close teacher-student relationships, that was something I really wanted in college.”

A two-time conference player of the week last season, she was also the leading scorer in the SAA championship game, giving her plenty of momentum for the coming season.

“I would love to be All-Conference again,” she said. “I’d also love to get another conference championship with my team. Three in a row would be super cool.”

“I LOVE THE SMALLSCHOOL ASPECT OF BOTH MOUNT AND RHODES. THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT REALLY DREW ME HERE.”

Olivia Chambers

Halfway through high school, Olivia Chambers ’21 faced the biggest challenge of her life — the degradation of her sight due to Parinaud Syndrome, a condition where lesions on the brain stem disable the eyes’ ability to function properly.

“In August 2019, I was sitting in my room reading a book,” she said. “All of a sudden, I realized the words were so blurry I couldn’t see them anymore.”

The disease might have robbed her of physical sight, but Chambers’ focus on her athletic goals remained clear. Swimming for MSM, she was a three-time state qualifier, two-time conference champion in the 100 backstroke and took second in the event at state as a senior. She also dominated club competition,

Annie Quo

It’s a long way from Little Rock to the U.S. Naval Academy, and an even longer journey from Annie Quo ’19 the MSM freshman to the woman she is today.

“My older sister was always the athlete; she grew up playing soccer and played all the way into her junior year at Mount,” said Quo. “When I was younger, my family would make fun of me because I didn’t like to do anything. I didn’t even like to walk places.”

Quo competed in track in junior high, but her true awakening occurred at Mount where she encountered the JROTC Physical Fitness Team and its legendary coach Sgt. Major R.L. Jernigan. “Sergeant Major was such a great mentor to me. He was always pushing me to do better,” she said.

Under Jernigan’s direction, Quo’s team won three state championships. By the time she was

with three top-five finishes at the USA Club Swimming State Short Course.

She also achieved her long-held dream of Division 1 athletics, landing a swimming scholarship from Northern Iowa University where she swam the mile, the 500 and the 400 IM. Her freshman campaign yielded 13th place in the mile and 400 IM, and 19th in the 500 at conference. She also scored wins in several dual meets.

Chambers said the transition from high school to college was just a natural extension of the work ethic she’d maintained her whole life in swimming.

“I’m always looking to be the best,” she said. “I’m not the best on the team right now, but I’m always racing other people, racing my teammates. We’re pushing each other.”

Chambers earned another distinction in April when she earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympics Team. Three months later, she set a new Para American record in the 400 IM with a time of 5:21.68. She hopes to represent the U.S. in the Paralympic Games in 2024.

Nex t LevelBELLES

It is extremely rewarding to see Belle student-athletes take their abilities, talents, pride and passion to the collegiate level. Below is a list of nearly 30 MSM alumnae who committed to playing, competing and performing at the next level over the past five years.

Rachel McGhee ’18 – Hendrix College – cross country

Evelyn Nick ’18 – Franciscan University of Steubenville – swimming

Susan Rice ’18 – University of Nebraska Omaha – softball

Brooke Hall ’19 – Christian Brothers University – volleyball

Anya Ranaraja ’19 – Rhodes College – soccer

Madeline Shepherd ’19 – Judson University – volleyball

an upperclassman, she’d set her sights on attending a service academy, ultimately making it into Annapolis. Once there, she needed to find a sport and decided to try fencing.

“I was going to try out for sailing, but fencing was such a different sport than any I’d ever heard of,” she said. “I didn’t know anything about it.”

Despite never having fenced before, Quo qualified for national competition three straight years, though she never got the chance to compete. COVID interrupted her first two seasons, and last year she suffered an injury that caused her to put away her foil but not her competitive spirit, which she is now channeling into competitive rock climbing.

“Last summer, I was home for a month and didn’t have anything to do,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to try rock climbing, and I knew it wouldn’t be as harmful to my knee for recovery. I got a rock climbing membership and went to the gym every day. It was fun because it was something different; it’s more strength-based, and you can learn at your own pace.”

She said she’s discovered plenty in her athletic career, lessons she puts to work in her professional life as a military officer.

“Sports taught me relationships and how teams work and how you need the balance between retention and results,” she said. “You want to win but you have to balance that. You have to remember that before you can lead a successful mission, you first have to be successful in building a team.”

Brittany Greenwood

SKIING

“I started water skiing when I was about 3 years old, and I’ve been competitively water skiing since I was 7 years old, more than 20 years overall,” she said. “In that time, I’ve been fortunate enough to compete in a lot of different places. Literally, anywhere they say, ‘Hey, we’re having a tournament,’ we pretty much say, ‘OK, we’ll be there.’”

Greenwood isn’t just going for the scenery. One of the elite competitors in the country over the majority of her career, she’s won two national titles as a junior and “a few” in the senior division. Her 2008 jump record of 120 feet remains one of the longeststanding marks in the sport. She was also part of a national championship team in 2015, skiing for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. After leaving college, she turned pro.

Along the way, Greenwood has managed to earn her CrossFit instructor’s certification and works as a nutritionist through UAMS in Little Rock. She credits the hectic schedule she juggled in high school with teaching her how to keep everything in balance.

“Mount St. Mary is not an easy school, and I believe it really forced me to evaluate my priorities,” she said. “Making sacrifices at 15 or 16 isn’t really the most fun, and I definitely had to be diligent about time management.

“I became a better student throughout high school because our teachers and guidance counselors said, ‘You can go and do your sport, but you also need to make sure you are putting first things first.’ They made sure I remembered what was important.”

Long-term success in any sport is difficult. For Brittany Greenwood ’12, who competes in the joint-jolting world of water ski jumping, longevity is an accomplishment that’s all the more impressive.
“I BECAME A BETTER STUDENT THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE OUR TEACHERS AND GUIDANCE COUNSELORS MADE SURE I REMEMBERED WHAT WAS IMPORTANT.”

Leading

INTO THE FUTURE

WHEN ANNE MINES ’82 AND HER HUSBAND TIM SAY THEY BELIEVE IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION, THEY’RE NOT KIDDING. ALL FOUR MINES CHILDREN ATTENDED PAROCHIAL SCHOOL AT EVERY LEVEL, INCLUDING PUTTING THREE DAUGHTERS –MELANIE ’10, ABBY ’14 AND JENNIFER ’19 – THROUGH MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY.

The investment they made in their children over that time was an investment in their future success and now that their kids have grown, the couple continues to invest in the future of MSM. Anne serves on the MSM Academy board of directors as chair while Tim sits on the MSM Foundation board of trustees. And together, they are members of the McAuley Society through their charitable contributions

Tim said like any investment, the proof is in the payoff and when it comes to education and personal development, the Mount is one of the best schools Arkansas has to offer. He said a desire to make that education available to the widest possible range of students is what keeps the couple involved today.

“Seeing what it did for our daughters and how it prepared them for the real world in every aspect was such a blessing,” he said. “Academically, physically, spiritually, every area of their lives you can name was positively impacted by this school. I just can’t think of a better place we could have sent them.”

Anne said the sisterhood created by a MSM education –something she shared with her mother who attended before her and her daughters who came after – also brings certain responsibilities for giving back, especially as costs rise and the competition for the best teachers becomes more intense.

“Development dollars are of the utmost importance these days,” she said. “Teacher salaries are the largest portion of the Academy’s budget, and these must increase each year if we are to remain competitive. Paying for these increases while trying

to maintain reasonable tuition is something the Academy is tasked with annually and donations are key to meeting these challenges.”

Anne said every alumna, no matter the year or her station in life, can play a role to play in helping ensure Mount delivers on its promise of a quality, Catholic education for years to come.

“You know that feeling you get when you put a jacket on for the first time in the winter and you find a few dollars in the pocket? You smile because you just know it’s going to make a little difference in your day,” she said. “That’s how it is when Mount gets a donation, no matter the amount, either through the annual fund for current year support or the endowment for a long-term impact.

“The bottom line is, we count on people to make these sacrifices each year to help continue the mission of educating the next generation of young women in the Mount tradition. We rely on people who care enough to take the time and make the sacrifice to support the school and its students.”

THE SEEDS YOUSew

ATTENDING MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY HAS BEEN ONE OF MY BIGGEST BLESSINGS. I knew I wanted to attend MSM in fifth grade when Annie Cross, director of enrollment management, visited my elementary school. I instantly knew I wanted to wear that uniform and be a cool Mount Girl one day.

The only problem was, I knew the financial aspect was an issue for my family. But thanks to tuition assistance and scholarships (especially the Sr. Deborah Troillett, RSM ’73 Endowed Scholarship) my family was able to send me to the best school we know of.

general. I found a new side of me that I am very proud of.

My favorite things about MSM are the relationships I created with teachers and faculty members. Through work study, I was able to get so close to everyone in the main office, and my favorite memories are from the time I spent there. I am beyond thankful to them for always being so kind to me.

None of these experiences would have been possible without the financial help my family was offered. If it had not been for all the amazing donors, I would not have been able to attend MSM and experience the impact it had on me as a person. I am forever grateful to have

My MSM experience was so meaning ful; I came in a shy, intro verted 14-year-old with two friends. When I graduated, I left Mount a very confi dent, independent young adult with so many new friendships. It sounded cliché when people called the Mount a “sisterhood,” but the reality is, it’s just that.

If it had not been for all the amazing donors, I would not have been able to attend MSM and experience the impact it had on me as a person. ”

Mount allows you to come out of your comfort zone, join new clubs and do things you may have never thought to do, which helped me find new friends. I was part of the track team, and I become a Mountie Messenger student ambassador. Through this, I was able to gain so much confidence while speaking publicly, as well as speaking to other people in

been able to graduate from this wonderful school and that my sister, who is a junior this year, will soon graduate from the Mount as well.

I simply cannot thank Mount St. Mary and its donors enough for making all of this possible. And I encourage people to continue to donate so that other girls like my sister and me can experience the greatness that is Mount St. Mary Academy.

If you would like to contribute to any of the existing endowments or scholarship funds, please contact the Foundation Office at 501-664-8006. New endowments for scholarships and tuition assistance can be established as a living tribute or in memory of a loved one with a minimum gift of $25,000. PAYING IT BACK

PAYING IT FORWARDby

EVEN THOUGH IT’S BEEN MORE THAN A DECADE SINCE GINGER AND BRIAN QUINN’S DAUGHTERS — CAITLIN ’05 AND VIRGINIA ’11 — GRADUATED

FROM MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY, THE COUPLE CONTINUES TO ADVOCATE FOR THE SCHOOL WHENEVER THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF. The way they see it, MSM’s impact on their girls was lifelong, so it’s only right that their support of the school should follow suit.

“The girls had very different journeys,” Ginger said. “Our eldest, Caitlin, at the end of her freshman year was trying to find her 14-year-old self and struggling and she wanted

to change schools, badly. I called Sister Deborah (Troillett) crying and I said, ‘What do I do?’ And she said, ‘Just say no.’

“We did what Sister Deborah told us, and it was the best advice we’ve ever been given. Not all journeys are linear, sometimes they’re zig-zaggy. In that respect, Mount really put their arms around Caitlin, loved her and shepherded her. And it turned out to be a great experience.”

For Virginia, the Mount experience was different though no less impactful, they said. Virginia thrived in the classroom and also developed her natural leadership skills through student government and the Mount’s STEM curriculum.

“I think that STEM department was amazing for her from an academic standpoint,” Ginger said. “And through the junior service program, she got to serve kids with Down Syndrome and work in a hospital. That was also extremely impactful.”

The couple not only talk a good game about the virtues of Mount St. Mary, but Ginger also would become one of the architects of the Mercy and Me luncheon which has turned into a successful biennial fundraiser. And, the couple has personally put their money where their mouths are, remembering the school in their estate planning. Brian said planned giving is an easy way to contribute to the school.

“It wasn’t a difficult thing for us to do,” he said. “It didn’t take a lot of time to set up. All we had to do was figure out the different institutions we wanted to remember in our estate, of which Mount was one, and then make a phone call. That was pretty much all there was to it.”

The couple said one big misconception about planned giving is that it is reserved only for people with very large estates. In fact, plans can be drawn up in any amount and even customized to direct funds to a given purpose or department within the school, if desired. Most of all, he said, people should remember that every donation counts, no matter how large or small.

“We’re not some big, wealthy family with this huge estate, nor do we have to be. Every little bit helps,” he said. “We just wanted to give back what we could and hopefully help other girls experience the Mount the way our girls did.”

The 1851 Society is comprised of individuals and families who have made or will make the school a beneficiary in their estate plans. If you are considering remembering Mount St. Mary in your will or trust to receive money, property, stock or other valuables, please contact the Foundation Office at 501-664-8006.
