From the Sketchbooks of T.C. Talented, ahead of his time, iconic – words that can be used to describe Tommy Wayne “T.C.” Cannon. His interesting life led to his depth of work and the variety of subjects he portrayed. Although his life was way too short, his work keeps his memory living on. I am pleased to present this special summer show From the Sketchbooks of T.C. and honored to be working with the T.C. Cannon Estate, managed by his sister Joyce Cannon Yi. I am very grateful to Joyce for allowing me to present the works of one of my artist icons – a huge icon in Native American art. Over the years, T.C.’s works have become exceedingly hard to come by. Joyce has allowed me to choose the grouping you see here, a rare glimpse into the realm that T.C. portrayed. Everything from his serious side of figurative imagery and atom bombs, down to the whimsical aspects such as quick sketches of cats and shrimp, shows T.C.’s imagination and mind. This body of work is fun, yet serious, and in my opinion, way cool! I hope you will find a piece that suits your collection and will be treasured for many years to come. Please enjoy, and feel free to contact us to help select one, or two, or five for you! With excitement and regards, Ken Williams Manager, Case Trading Post
Tee Cee What can I say about this charismatic figure that burst onto the art scene and changed it to a new and different way of expression? This person with whom I grew up. Who I saw had a talent for painting even at an early age. A person winning or placing in whichever contest he entered. But it was at the Institute of American Indian Arts that his career and his style really evolved. He and his contemporaries at I.A.I.A. changed the art world as it was and made it their own. He portrayed the modern Indian in visual art – something new that art collectors were looking for. It was at I.A.I.A. that he painted his ground-breaking piece of art titled Mama and Papa Have the Going Home to Shiprock Blues, portraying the Native American in sun glasses, legs crossed, and smoking a cigarette. He made his mark not only in the art world, but as a warrior in the 101st Airborne. It was at the Tet Offensive he distinguished himself and was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Medal of Valor, as well as other medals. Unfortunately not all things last, and on May 8, 1978, he was in an automobile accident that took his life at the age of 31. He had a wish to go to Paris and paint with the other artists. I’m sure had he lived, he would have fulfilled that dream. He had so much more to give us. This brilliant artist, scholar, musician, and poet left behind a treasure trove of works that have inspired this generation and generations to come. Who knows what might have come from that brilliant mind of his that was going 24/7? A motion picture writer, a professor at some university, sharing his knowledge with others? I’m sure whatever he chose to do, it would have been glorious. Joyce Cannon Yi
