Artissima, Italy’s most important contemporary art fair, is one of the most eagerly awaited events on the international art scene. Thanks to the quality of its offerings and its focus on experimentation, the Turin fair is intended as a launch pad for emerging artists and galleries. This year’s event offers a hybrid formula, physical and digital, and launches the theme of “Counter-Time” as a transversal reflection, in reference to the history of art as a polyphony of voices in time and against time, linked in a unique and surprising symphony. By collaborating with numerous public institutions, museums and galleries, during the fair days, Turin is transformed into a mega happening, with myriad,city-wide events.

ABOUT LABOR

ART & EVENTS In a place symbolic of the transition towards new models of productivity, the installations, sculptures, videos and performances of 13 artists invite us to observe the remains of a recent industrial past and the ambivalence of today’s working conditions: OGR Torino hosts a collective exhibition to reflect on the transformation of work in the post-industrial and digital context, between awareness and disillusionment, precariousness and redemption. The exhibition includes works by: Andrea Bowers, Pablo Bronstein, Claire Fontaine, Tyler Coburn, Jeremy Deller, Kevin Jerome Everson, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Elisa Giardina Papa, Liz Magic Laser, Adam Linder, Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Mike Nelson, and Charlotte Posenenske. Free entrance. T hurs and Fri, 12noon to 8pm; Sat and Sun, 10am-8pm.

FONDAZIONE MERZ, UNTIL 31 DECEMBER

MARISA AND MARIO MERZ. TOGETHER

CONTEMPORARY ART A new exhibition project presents in a single path the work of Marisa and Mario Merz, two different but intimately linked modes of expression, an artistic dialogue through a reflection on the sense of time and space. Marisa dedicates herself to studying the structure of female faces through drawing, painting and sculpture; here her activity is intertwined with that of Mario, who on each occasion has reinvented his igloo through the use of ever different materials. The domestic dimension is no different from the museum: as in their homestudio, the visitor will be immersed in a continuous dialogue, discovering works that have never been seen before.

>> From Tuesday 2 November, the exhibition will be enriched by new works from Richard Long, Giulio Paolini and Remo Salvadori: three works that discreetly fit into the dialogue between the Merz, occupying spaces that had been left vacant in anticipation of this event.

CITY LIGHTS

ENTERTAINMENT November is the month of contemporary art in Turin and, for the past 24 years, it has kicked off with ‘Luci d’Artista’, a light art show featuring exquisite luminous artworks that, like an open-air art gallery, light up numerous squares and streets throughout the city. As dusk falls (from 6pm until midnight), take a stroll and look upwards to admire installations, known and loved by the Torinese, like Daniel Buren’s ‘Flying Carpet’ in piazza Palazzo di Città, Michelangelo Pistoletto’s ‘Love Difference’ and Mario Merz’s ‘The Flight of Numbers’ which this year will once again illuminate the dome of the Mole Antonelliana with the Fibonacci’s sequence.

DIGNITY AND SOLEMNITY OF FATTORI

MODERN ART A major retrospective devoted to the work of the Leghorn artist Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908), one of the absolute masters of nineteenth-century Italy who was able to interpret the themes of the great Risorgimento battles and also subjects linked to life in the fields and the rural landscape. Sixty masterpieces arranged in chronological and thematic sequence, from 1954 to 1984, when his gaze opened up to the imminent twentieth century.

A GREEN HEART FOR THE ROYAL CITY

GARDEN After a long wait of more than five years, the Giardini Reali - the green heart embracing Turin’s Royal Museums complex - have recently reopened to the public. The route includes the Ducal Garden, north of the Royal Palace, the Levante Garden and the Boschetto. The important restoration work on the Fountain of the Nereids and the Tritons in the Giardino di Levante, the surrounding wall and the Bastions completes the restitution of one of the most evocative places in the city and of great importance for its high historical and artistic value. Playful perspectives and sculptures created according to the Baroque taste, a natural continuation of the tour that flows from the halls of the Royal Palace and the Galleria Sabauda to the outside. On this occasion the archaeological area of the Roman Theatre was also recovered, which together with the Porta Palatina is the most important Roman monument preserved in the city.

LEONARDO DA VINCI

EXTRAORDINARY EXHIBITIONS Some of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous drawings are preserved in a vault in the heart of the Royal Library of Turin: the “Codex on the Flight of Birds” and 13 drawings, including the famous “SelfPortrait”. The exceptionally valuable works documenting the activity of the great master of the Italian Renaissance – from the beginning of his career in Florence to his Milanese studies of machines – will only be exhibited to the public during Easter Holy Week in the coming years, in order to prevent long exposure from damaging them. This longterm planning will therefore make it possible to plan one's visit at a fixed time, preparing oneself in advance.

>> The dates are: 16-24 April 2022, 8-16 April 2023, 30 March-7 April 2024 and 19-27 April 2025.
