MERZ'S IGLOO AT VENARIA
INSTALLATION The Venaria Reale has recently enriched its contemporary art collection with Mario Merz’s “Igloo”, housed in the Fountain of the Deer in the spectacular Court of Honour. A symbol or metaphor for the condition of man and his way of inhabiting the world today, for Merz the igloo has the function of linking primordial and natural reality with contemporary and urban reality. The work, created for the park of the Museu Serralves in Porto, is strongly linked to the natural environment of the Royal Palace Gardens, with the majestic presence of a deer at the top of the structure, on whose side a neon Fibonacci number is attached.

PHOTOGRAPHY Animals are the protagonists of sixty iconic shots that tell the thousands of stories of a daily life where man and animal are inextricably linked to each other. The “Animals” project curated by the master of the use of colour, empathy and humanity began in 1992 when McCurry went on a mission to the war zones in the Gulf area to document the disastrous environmental impact in the places of conflict. The exhibition touches on the
consequences of man’s
actions on local and global fauna.

GREAT MASTERS OF THE LENS
FIRST IN ITALY
PHOTOGRAPHY An extraordinary selection of over 230 photographic works from the first half of the 20th century, absolute masterpieces in the history of photography by the great masters of the lens. Just as the contemporaries Matisse, Picasso and Duchamp were able to revolutionise the languages of the plastic arts, so the artists in the exhibition redefined the canons of photography, making it take on an absolutely central role in the development of the avant-garde movements at the beginning of the century. A creative ferment that began in Europe and finally arrived in the United States, which increasingly welcomed intellectuals fleeing the war, becoming the world’s main centre of artistic production in the 1940s. On show are works by the great American and European photographers, from Henri Cartier-Bresson to André Kertész, and the exponents of the first modern female photography, from Tina Modotti to Leni Riefenstahl.

DIGNITY AND SOLEMNITY OF FATTORI
MODERN ART A major retrospective devoted to the work of the Leghorn artist Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908), one of the absolute masters of nineteenth-century Italy who was able to interpret the themes of the great Risorgimento battles and also subjects linked to life in the fields and the rural landscape. Sixty masterpieces arranged in chronological and thematic sequence, from 1954 to 1984, when his gaze opened up to the imminent twentieth century.

FRIDA: THE WOMAN, ARTIST AND LOVER
ART An emotional journey through the life of renowned icon Frida Kahlo. A unique exhibition that explores the woman – renowned for her strength, courage, talent and love – rather than the artist. Mexico’s most prolific, well-known and dearlyloved artist is revealed through the lens of Nickolas Muray, her friend and lover. The exhibition features the complete collection of 60 photos taken by Muray, including the iconic “Frida Kahlo on White Bench”, plus reproductions of the things that Frida loved best: her famous bed, her Mexican outfits and her jewelry.

THE MAGIC OF “KAKEMONO” IN THE EAST
EXHIBITION “Kakemono” is a type of painted artwork very common in Japan and throughout East Asia: it is a roll of precious fabric or paper, painted or calligraphed, designed to be hung on special occasions or used as a decoration. These “hanging scrolls” represent the equivalent of the Western “painting”, but in their soft and plastic form they are designed for a limited time use, as a reminder of the mutation of existence. The first exhibition in Italy to focus on this art form, the MAO presents 125 kakemonos, as well as painted fans and decorated lacquers belonging to Piedmontese collector Claudio Perino.

THE “STREET ART” BY VIVIAN MAIER
PHOTOGRAPHY The exhibition at the Sale Chiablese of the Musei Reali presents over 250 images by Vivian Maier (19262009), one of the leading exponents of what has come to be knowns as “street photography”. Many of the images on display are never seen before or rare, such as colour works, as well as Super 8 videos and her personal objects such as her Rolleiflex and Leica cameras, and one of her hats. From his famous selfportraits (reflected in mirrors and shop windows) to shots taken on the go on the streets of New York and Chicago, portraits and gestures fixed by his lens are often anecdotes, coincidences, oversights of reality: and this is his stylistic signature. One section is devoted to shots, never seen before, taken during this singular and mysterious “artist’s” trip to Italy, particularly in Turin and Genoa.

THE WORLD OF BANKSY IN TURIN
EXHIBITION The Bristol-based artist conquers Turin with a new exhibition at the Sala degli Stemmi in the Torino Porta Nuova Station, the “gateway” to the city par excellence that welcomes thousands of visitors and travellers every day. The immersive exhibition features more than 30 new works never exhibited before, including “Flower Thrower”, “Steve Jobs”, “Girl With Baloon” and “Waiting In Vain”, in addition to works and murals created by anonymous young artists from all over Europe. In total, more than 130 works are on display, revealing the world of the mysterious British artist, who is famous for tackling political and social issues with irony. This is the second stop in Italy - after Milan - of a long journey for Banksy, who is going from station to station across Europe and beyond (Paris, Barcelona, Prague, Brussels and Dubai). The aim is to convey his message through his works, which offer both a touch of art and food for thought.

MUSICAL Based on “Ghost”, the Paramount Pictures cult movie that has moved generations of moviegoers since the 1990s, “Ghost Il Musical” has been adapted for the stage by original screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin and fully engages audiences in the theatre. In addition to the poprock soundtrack arranged by international music stars, it features never-before-seen special effects for two hours of pure emotion.

EXHIBITION More than a century of Italian cinema is told through the bodies and faces of the actresses and actors who made it famous throughout the world. The National Cinema Museum in the Mole Antonelliana offers a trip down memory lane, back in time: the flashback begins with today’s stars of the big and small screen, and ends with the icons of silent cinema. On display are images, equipment, magazines and brochures conserved by the Museum or other archives, together with images by contemporary photographers. Over 250 photographic reproductions, 71 original prints and more than 150 shots in the video galleries are on display in a large space that extends from the gate of the Mole Antonelliana to the courtyard of the University of Turin.

A VERTICAL JOURNEY AMIDST THE ‘STARS’
Featuring a spectacular layout, the “Museo Nazionale del Cinema” BOX?is a unique ‘vertical museum’, housed in the city’s landmark Mole Antonelliana. Organized by levels, not floors, in addition to a vast film library containing more than 7,000 titles, the museum’s rich heritage includes collections dedicated to the archaeology of cinema (level + 5 metres), the ‘Aula del Tempio’ (+10), the focal heart of the museum, with areas dedicated to the great genres of cinematic history, and the ‘Rampa’ which, like a movie, unfolds to reveal the dome, offering a breathtaking view over the museum from above. The ‘Macchina del Cinema’ (+15) is dedicated to the film industry, while the ‘Galleria dei Manifesti’ is located on level +18. A major highlight of the visit is the building’s panoramic elevator which takes visitors on a ride, up 85 metres, to the ‘Tempietto’, an observation deck offering a breathtaking view over the city and its surrounding Alpine range.
A GREEN HEART FOR THE ROYAL CITY
GARDEN After a long wait of more than five years, the Giardini Reali - the green heart embracing Turin’s Royal Museums complex - have recently reopened to the public. The route includes the Ducal Garden, north of the Royal Palace, the Levante Garden and the Boschetto.The important restoration work on the Fountain of the Nereids and the Tritons in the Giardino di Levante, the surrounding wall and the Bastions completes the restitution of one of the most evocative places in the city and of great importance for its high historical and artistic value. Playful perspectives and sculptures created according to the Baroque taste, a natural continuation of the tour that flows from the halls of the Royal Palace and the Galleria Sabauda to the outside. On this occasion the archaeological area of the Roman Theatre was also recovered, which together with the Porta Palatina is the most important Roman monument preserved in the city.

ART A new exhibition at GAM in Turin presents 33 major artists from the international scene through 56 works, many of which have not had the opportunity to be shown to the public in recent years. This exhibition is part of a process of internationalisation of the museum, which began many years ago: in addition to works by European and American artists, many works now come from different cultures and languages, from China to Cuba to Africa. The artists selected for this exhibition belong to different generations, from the 1930s (Georg Baselitz) to the generation born in the 1970s (Kcho, Hannah Starkey, Laurent Grasso).

EXTRAORDINARY EXHIBITIONS Some of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous drawings are preserved in a vault in the heart of the Royal Library of Turin: the “Codex on the Flight of Birds” and 13 drawings, including the famous “SelfPortrait”. The exceptionally valuable works documenting the activity of the great master of the Italian Renaissance – from the beginning of his career in Florence to his Milanese studies of machines – will only be exhibited to the public during Easter Holy Week in the coming years, in order to prevent long exposure from damaging them. This longterm planning will therefore make it possible to plan one's visit at a fixed time, preparing oneself in advance.
