PALAZZO DUCALE, UNTIL 25 MARCH 2022 THE SIXTEEN CENTURIES OF VENICE
ART 421-2021. This year Venice celebrates its 1600th anniversary with a monumental exhibition in the place that symbolises the power and glory of the Serenissima: the Doges’ Palace in St Mark’s Square. A great illustrated story that aims to tell the myth of Venice through the centuries, with a scenographic layout divided into 12 sections. Visitors can retrace the salient stages of the history and identity of Venice, which has been called upon several times to redesign its future, through works and documents by the greatest artists who have worked in the lagoon over almost a millennium – Carpaccio, Bellini, Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, Rosalba Carriera, Guardi and Canaletto, right up to Canova, Hayez, Appiani; and then Pollock, Vedova, Tancredi, Santomaso – but also the many architects, talented men of art, writers and musicians who have accompanied its development. The last room is an invitation to reflect on the future, on safeguarding the heritage of this city and on the search for sustainability.

IMMERSIVE JOURNERY IN THE LAGOON CITY
HYPERVENEZIA. Palazzo Grassi. Campo San Samuele, 3231 www.palazzograssi.it PHOTOGRAPHY An exhibition specifically dedicated to the city of Venice on the occasion of the 1600th anniversary of its foundation. A show presenting for the first time to the public the #VeniceUrbanPhotoProject conceived and realised by Mario Peliti, who since 2006 has been mapping the city in an ambitious archive of photographs of the city of Venice, which to date has reached over 12,000 shots, all in black and white and with no people around.
A MUSEUM WITHIN A MUSEUM
Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia Campo della Carità, 1050. www.gallerieaccademia.it Two new monumental halls have recently been set up at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, offering a new exhibition itinerary dedicated to painting in Venice and the Veneto in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A precious selection of works, some of which have never been exhibited before, or never been admired in their current form, are the result of restoration work carried out for the occasion. Among the restored masterpieces is Tiepolo’s “Chastisement of the Serpents” (see photo), a canvas over 13 metres long from the Venetian Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano.
LE STANZE DEL VETRO (ISLAND OF SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE), UNTIL 22 NOVEMBER
GLASS ANIMALS
GLASS ART The “The Glass Ark. Animals in the Pierre Rosenberg Collection” exhibition at “Le Stanze del Vetro” will retrace – in an original and fascinating way – the history of 20th-century Murano glass from an unusual angle: the glass animal. The over 750 works of art – representing, among others, elephants, hippos, cats, giraffes, bears, parrots, fish, turtles, foxes and tiny, lamp-worked life-sized insects – belong to the personal collection that Pierre Rosenberg, art historian and former Director/President of the Louvre in Paris, put together over thirty years. https://lestanzedelvetro.org Photos © Enrico Fiorese
CHURCH OF SAN LORENZO, UNTIL 17 OCTOBER
INVITATION TO DANCE
PERFORMANCE How to reconcile the activity of an artist with her political commitment to nature? The Dominican-born choreographer and dancer Isabel Lewis responds with an initiative that involves performers and visitors in dance, song and music in the 16th-century Church of San Lorenzo and outdoors in the surrounding areas. The exhibition performance, entitled O.C.E.A.N.I.C.A., invites to a “dance across the Ocean” by teaching movements that adapt the body to the flow of sound as if one were being pulled across the waters of the Ocean.

PEGGY GUGGENHEIM COLLECTION
This is one of the most important museums of European and American art of the twentieth century in Italy. It is located in Peggy Guggenheim’s former home, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal in Venice and presents her personal collection, masterpieces from the Hannelore B. and Rudolph B. Schulhof collection, a sculpture garden as well as temporary exhibitions. With the Gallerie dell’Accademia, the Galleria di Palazzo Cini and Palazzo Grassi-Punta della Dogana it is connected in the Dorsoduro Museum Mile, a unique cultural itinerary along eight centuries of art.

DIALOGUE BETWEEN ANCIENT AND CONTEMPORARY
ARCHITECTURE Two new projects reinforce the dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary, in a unique place in the architectural and historical-artistic panorama of the city. The refurbishment of “La Sala del Doge”, which will return to its Renaissance splendour, and the “Archinto” exhibition featuring new works by German artist Georg Baselitz, some of which were created specifically for the Palazzo, will remain on loan to the museum. This is the first time in Venice that we have seen such a collaboration between a contemporary artist and a state museum.

FONDACO DEI TEDESCHI, UNTIL 21 NOVEMBER
WHEN THE CURTAIN OPENS, WHAT WILL WE SEE?
INSTALLATION In the inner courtyard of Fondaco dei Tedeschi, a luxury department store and cultural centre for the city of Venice, visitors become spectators, participants in an experience with an uncertain outcome, like the one experienced during the pandemic. Four long red curtains, suspended from the fourth floor, the courtyard and the water gate conceal a performance whose plot is unknown. “Second Act” is the name of this site-specific installation by Dutch artist and designer Maarten Baas (in collaboration with set designer Theun Mosk), on the occasion of the Architecture Biennale. On the fourth floor you can also visit “Sweepers”, an exhibition that is part of the famous Real-Time Clocks series.

FONDAZIONE PRADA, UNTIL 21 NOVEMBER
REJECTION OR REINVENTION OF PAINTING?
CONTEMPORARY ART Described by Swiss artist Peter Fischli as “a kaleidoscope of repudiated gestures”, the project explores a series of specific ruptures within the history of painting in the last 150 years. It intends to understand if a further development is taking place today and if the current digital revolution can also cause a new crisis of painting or, on the contrary, contribute to its renewal. The artist devised this exhibition as a plurality of different narratives told by himself in the first person, with more than 110 artworks by over 80 artists.

THE CONTEMPORARY EXPERIMENTS OF NAUMAN
CONTEMPORARY ART “Bruce Nauman: Contrapposto Studies”, curated by Carlos Basualdo and Caroline Bourgeois in close collaboration with the artist himself, is part of the series of monographic exhibitions organised by Palazzo Grassi with the active participation of the artist at the heart of the show. The major exhibition dedicated to Bruce Nauman (1941, Indiana, USA) is an homage to one of the major figures of the contemporary art international scene and to his constant exploration of the artist studio as a space where creation takes place, of the body through performances and of sound. The unique exhibition at Punta della Dogana brings together older works and the most recent ones, some of which have never been exhibited in Europe before. The exhibition in Venice is focused on a series of recent video installations that Nauman has developed in the last five years and are related to a single channel video from 1968, “Walk with Contrapposto.”

THE PALACE OF DOGE GRIMANI IS REBORN
On the occasion of the celebrations for the 1600th anniversary of the birth of Venice, Palazzo Vendramin Grimani, the 18th-century residence of the humanist doge Pietro Grimani, opens to the public. The precious 16th-century building on the Grand Canal will guide visitors on a journey through the paintings in the Grimani Albero d’Oro family’s collections, as well as unpublished photographs by Patrick Tourneboeuf, which tell the story of the palace before and after the work. WORK IN PROGRESS AT THE GALLERIE DELL’ACCADEMIA
The world’s largest collection of Veneto art has reopened in recent weeks, returning visitors to the corridor designed by Andrea Palladio (after two years of restoration): an absolute premiere while awaiting the completion of the new exhibition layout. The rearrangement work will gradually lead to the opening of new sections, such as the room dedicated to the reconstruction of the ceiling of Palazzo Corner Spinelli, painted by Giorgio Vasari, the opening of a room dedicated to the Bassano canvases, the setting up of a new room for the exhibition of graphic masterpieces from the Cabinet of Drawings, one of the richest collections in Italy, with no less than 20 drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. The Gallerie dell’Accademia has also announced that British Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor will be the first British artist to be honoured with a major exhibition at the museum. The exhibition, postponed from 2021 because of the pandemic, will be presented during the Venice International Art Biennale in 2022, opening on 20 April and running until 9 October 2022.

CASA DEI TRE OCI, UNTIL 9 JANUARY 2022
AUTHOR’S GLANCES
MARIO DE BIASI. Fotografie 1947-2003 Casa dei Tre Oci. Giudecca, 43. www.treoci.org PHOTOGRAPHY An extensive retrospective devoted to one of Italy's greatest photographers, a tireless narrator of the world, Mario De Biasi. 216 photographs, half of them previously unpublished, recount major historical events, exotic journeys, portraits of powerful and famous people, scenes from everyday life or anonymous faces, right through to conceptual and abstract works. Considered a “neo-realist photoamateur”, De Biasi is a witness to a 20th century that today seems distant - his images of Italy with its desire for rebirth after the devastation of war, or certain memorable views of New York are famous - but also capable of an intimate look at nature and people.

GULF OF TRIESTE, 10 OCTOBER
THE GREATEST REGATTA IN THE WORLD
ENTERTAINMENT The “iconic regatta” that takes place every year in the Gulf of Trieste on the second Sunday in October is a sailing challenge that has become a symbol of yachting history. On a 13-nautical mile course, crews battle it out in a marine area between Barcola and Miramare with the finish line in Piazza Unità d’Italia (start at 10.30am). Cancelled last year due to the Bora wind, this year it comes with some novelties: the return to the “open number” of entries with no limit on the number of participants, a new organisation of the spaces on land at Porto Vecchio as a location for cultural and artistic events that will start as early as 1st October, and larger spaces for exhibitors.

PH © JACOPO SALVI How: Speaks to practical approaches and concrete solutions, highlighting the primacy of problem-solving in architectural thinking. Will: Signals looking toward the future but also seeking vision and determination, drawing from the power of the architectural imaginary.
