It’s the most wonderful time of the year. That is if you’re looking for summer vacation ideas. The PA Family Travel Fair is back and better than ever! The 5th annual event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be held on Saturday, April 15, at the Calvary Church campus in Lancaster. The free travel fair is designed to bring Pennsylvania destinations and attractions together in one location so you can plan your vacation in PA. The event has something for everyone and won’t cost a dime. There are no sales pitches or pressure, just a fun day with children’s activities, giveaways, great entertainment, and tons of ideas for your next getaway. Speaking of getaways, one lucky attendee will win an Endless Mountains Getaway in northeastern Pennsylvania worth up to $2,000 thanks to our Getaway sponsor, Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau!
Shows
Papa Tater will provide magic and chuckles when he performs at our noon show. Can’t make it at noon? Stop by Papa Tater’s booth; he’ll be there all day. For the first time since 2019, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will be back with an “Animals of the Rainforest” show at 2 p.m. Learn about the rainforest and the animals that live under the canopy. When not doing the show, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland zoologists will be at their booth so you can get close to these incredible creatures. Both shows will take place on the café stage; just follow the signs.
Exhibitors
Our exhibitors come from all areas of Pennsylvania and offer history, outdoor recreation, amusement parks, caverns, museums, events, and fun family attractions. The counties that lie along Pennsylvania’s northern border, connected by historic Route 6, feature beautiful scenery, parks, and lakes that make the destination a wonderland of natural beauty. Home to a wide variety of recreational sites, natural resources, and quaint small towns, each of the counties along the state’s northern border are destinations to slow down, unwind, and appreciate a more mindful way to enjoy life. As more temperate breezes begin to warm the northern tier, spring is the perfect time to discover the wonderful treasures of Warren County.
Outdoor Adventures
Outdoor recreation is a major draw to this part of the Pennsylvania Wilds for visitors looking to pursue pastimes like hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and leisurely activities like bird watching. Major recreational areas like the western side of the 550,000-acre Allegheny National
Forest, as well as the beautiful waters of Kinzua Dam & Allegheny Reservoir, combined with state parks, game lands, and local parks, make Warren County a perfect place to shake off the winter blues. Outfitters across the region are standing by to assist visitors with getting the gear they need to have an incredible adventure exploring the trails, in the natural areas, and on the waterways of Warren County.
Incredible scenery is on display across the county. Still, those looking to take in some of the best will want to visit three overlooks that offer breathtaking views of Warren County’s spectacular topography. Be sure to bring a camera or sketchbook when you stop by Rimrock Overlook and ascend steps leading to the large natural stone formation offering a panoramic view of the Allegheny Reservoir. The Tidioute Overlook presents a bird’s-eye view of islands on the Allegheny River, the farm- lands of the river valleys, and lush forests. A second viewing spot offers a great vantage point to view historic Tidioute. The third overlook visitors will want to explore is Jakes Rocks Overlook, which sits atop a cliff providing an incredible view of the Allegheny Reservoir.
Town of Historic Proportions
Discovering Warren’s history and experiencing the nostalgic charm of the small towns across the county make for great ways to enjoy a visit. The National Historic District in the city of Warren is rich with opulent homes and buildings that share the story of the region’s oil barons and entrepreneurs whose legacy is reflected in these structures. Visitors can discover the history of Warren, from its establishment in the late 18th century as a center to move lumber to a growing nation to the 19th-century discovery of oil that made it one of the richest sources of materials needed to fuel the country’s Industrial Revolution.
center that remains one of the United States’ longest-running theaters offering cultural activities throughout the year. Other nearby stops sharing the rich heritage of Warren include the Warren County Courthouse, the Warren County Historical
Fantastic Forests and Trails to Explore, and Small-Town Charm are the Best Reasons to Head to Warren County This Spring.
Visitors today will learn the story as they explore this rich heritage. Endowed as a library and cultural center, the Struthers Library Theatre on West Third Avenue is a 135-year-old performing arts
Society, and the busy downtown business district. A tip for two-wheel tourists: proximity to the Warren/North Warren Bike Trail makes exploring the town by bike an easy way to get around!
Planning an Eventful Visit Spring events blossoming across the county are a primary reason for people to visit. Events celebrating Easter, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day are found on the Warren County Visitors Bureau website calendar. Concerts in March presented by the Warren Concert Association bring world-class performers to the area. In April, classical music fans will want to head to the First Presbyterian Church for the annual Concerts Around the Casavant, which has showcased beautiful music since the event began to celebrate the church’s 200th anniversary. The Scandia Chainsaw Carve, taking place May 12 through 14 at the Red Oak Campground, is a fun opportunity for visitors to experience the artistry and workmanship of craftspeople as they transform logs into beautiful wood sculptures during this weekend festival.
Stay for a While
Warren County’s hotels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds have inviting options to consider when planning your visit. From historic and rustic B&Bs like the Candlelight Inn and the Victoria On Main to the familiar brand hotels like Days Inn and vacation rentals and campgrounds - no matter what your lodging preference may be, there is a warm welcome waiting for you to enjoy.
It’s not too early to consider new locations to experience for your summer vacation or fall foliage escape later this year. When considering your 2023 getaways, remember that the highways, byways, and expansive forests of Warren County offer a panoramic wonderland of seasonal splendor to experience!
